Check Box in Paragraph Styles

Good Day. I have been using pages to write marketing and technical review docs. I have now forgotten how to use word! I am writing a white paper and need to create a TOC but I cant see those checkboxes that everyone is raving about to the left each paragraph style. Can someone help me please? I am using Pages 08 version 3.03. I know I should be moving on to 09 but right now too much pressure to get my work done! Thank you very much

Hi McFreak
Welcome to the forum.
Not quite sure what you are talking about.
There is only one place you get something like what you describe.
If you select some text and go to:
+Menu > View > Show Styles Drawer > click on a triangle next to Character Style > Create New Character Style from Selection > click on the triangle next to Include all character attributes+
You will see it.
I recently posted on how appalling a User Interface this is. One that Apple has adopted throughout OSX. One where you can only stumble on something by knowing exactly where it is and what combination of circumstances will reveal it.

  • Use of "Next paragraph same page" check box in paragraph format of SCRIPT?

    Hi Guys,
    What is the use of "Next paragraph same page" check box in paragraph format of SCRIPT?
    Don't Send me the F1 help ....i am not clear with that help it is quite confusing.
    Provide example if possible.

    Hello.
    You probably know the idea of PROTECT command. It makes that a paragraph wont break in two. If it fit's totaly in one page it will print in that page. If not, it will print totaly in the second page (won't break at the middle).
    The checkbox you are asking, makes the same with two paragraphs. This means that if you have paragraphs A and B (A becomes first) and if paragraph A has that option, the next paragraph won't break, and appear in the second page. If paragraph A is in first page, paragraph B will print in first page too, or they will both print in second page.
    Try it.
    Best regards.

  • Changing Paragraph Style Export Tagging Options

    I'm having a heck of a time trying to get the "Split Document (EPUB only)" box checked for certain styles. I was hoping an experienced scripter may be able to help me solve what I'm sure is an easy fix.
    My code snippet is below:
    var doc = app.activeDocument;
    var par_styles = doc.paragraphStyles.everyItem().getElements();
    for (var i = 0; i < par_styles.length; i++) {
         par_styles[i].styleExportTagMap.splitDocument = true;
    In this example, I'd like to get the Split Document checkbox checked for every paragraph style in my document. However, apparently the paragraph style doesn't support the "styleExportTagMap" class, which is the only place I've found that the "splitDocument" property lives.
    I assume my ignorance arises from not knowing exactly what the styleExportTagMap(s) class does.
    Could anyone point me in the right direction?

    Seems like a hack, but it works.
    var
        doc = app.activeDocument,
        par_styles = doc.allParagraphStyles,
        i = 0;
    for ( i ; i < par_styles.length; i++ ) {
        par_styles [ i ].styleExportTagMaps.add ( "", "", "", "" ).splitDocument = true;
    Hope that helps.

  • KeepWithNext paragraph style

    Hi,
    I found instructions for creating a style in RoboHelp that allows me to tag text in RoboHelp and map that to a style in my template that places a page break before the tagged text. These page breaks translate into the printed document. Based off of these instructions, I also created a style called KeepWithNext. My goal in doing this was to ensure screenshots are not separated by a page break from the preceeding numbered steps they illustrate. I created the style in my template, and from the paragraph tab clicked the Keep with next check box to the style. However,this doesn't work predictably. I was able to get it to work; I know this because as I was testing, I discovered that I had created a huge block of text and images that could not be broken. One of the outputs I created streatched into the headers and footers of my printed output. I went back in and tried to separate my keep with next blocks from each other by a carriage return to which I applied the Normal style. I made sure that my numbered text still listed KeepWithNext as the applied style. This seems to have undone any good I did. Now I have images separated from the numbered text they're supposed to illustrate. It's odd to have an image appear at the top of a page, sometimes a turn away from the numbered step. Is there a way to tag an image in RoboHelp to ensure it stays on the same page as the text it illustrates?
    Louley

    Hello Louley,
    In case it's any help, I created a Macro in Word which applies the keep-with-next paragraph setting. Then I created a shortcut Alt+K (which isn't used for anything else that I can see, and the K reminds me that it's for Keep-with-next).
    In use, I click on the image or paragraph that I want to keep-with-next, and hit Alt+K. Quick and easy. I've used this for about 12 years.
    If I want to keep an image with the previous paragraph, I created another macro that searches for the next image, then it goes up a line to the previous paragraph, and then applies the keep-with-next rule.
    Hope this is helpful.
    Best regards, and Happy Christmas!

  • Problem Saving Paragraph Styles

    For some reason Pages does not want to save paragraph styles across all documents. when I create a new one in one document and save the document the style is saved but only in that document. when I create a new document the style I just made isnt avaliable. Is there a preference I can check to make sure all styles are saved across all documents I make in the future?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
    Styles are specific to each document. You need to create your own default template. Set up your document with the margins, headers, etc. as you'd like. Redefine all of the paragraph & character styles to have your desired font.
    While you're at it, you might want to set default styles for all objects, text boxes, tables, paragraph styles, etc. Start with a blank document & insert an object. Change the color, wrap, etc. to your choosing & then go to Format > Advanced > Define Default Shape Style then delete the object. Repeat with an image/photo, a text box & a table.
    Now, save this as a template then, in Pages > Preferences, select this template as the default for new documents. All of your new documents will have these settings for inserted objects, images & tables. Unfortunately, the settings won't apply to any other templates or "foreign" documents you open with Pages.

  • Paragraph Style Problem

    I have the weirdest problem that I cannot yet understand. I have a 76-page book that has at TOC plus 10 chapters. The book was created last year in ID CS3, and everything worked fine. I have updated it into CS4, and everything appeared to be working normally until I discovered this problem. My master chapter for synchronizing is Chapter 2 in the book panel. All fonts are loaded and present.
    In the last chapter (Ch. 10), the paragraph styles don't work. They not only don't work, they change the text to something totally weird. For example, if I set a block of type in Times New Roman and pick, say, the #1 Head style, which is Hypatia Sans Pro Bold, it converts it to a completely different font or it chooses a font I'm not even using. If I set the type in another chapter and cut and paste it to Chapter 10, it pastes fine. If I try to restyle it, it goes weird on me.
    I have looked extensively at the styles, and they are all correct and the same as all the other chapters. However, when I try to apply them, a different change results. I have checked the Basic Paragraph Style; however, none of my styles are based on that because I checked that also.
    Keep in mind that the paragraph styles worked properly last year and are working properly in every other chapter. Synchronizing does not help.
    This may be a bug of some sort or it may be something I've overlooked. But I haven't made any huge structural changes to the chapter other than to add a couple of pages. I've tried restarting the program and the computer. The only thing I have not tried is to completely remake the chapter, which, of course, I don't really want to do.
    I'm just throwing this out there. I'm not sure there is an easy answer. Let me know what you think.

    Try moving the pages to a new file. That's not going to be as effective, probably, as copying all the elements into a new file, but it's faster.
    Also, make a new book with just the problem chapter and the source chapter and synch again, see if it works.

  • Change default paragraph style!!

    How do I change the default paragraph style? I can't stand double spaces but that's what I am stuck with
    I want freeform, not body

    Welcome to the Apple forums
    By default, the Pages developers chose to use 12 point after paragraph spacing which will make it appear as a double space between paragraphs. You need to create your own default template. Set up your document with the line spacing, margins, headers, etc. as you'd like.

  • InDesign CC is bringing in style sheets from Word and other places that I copy type from, like email, Acrobat. In InDesign CS4, whenever I brought in text from outside it assumed the paragraph style applied to the waiting text box. The loss of this functi

    I used to be able to get text from a Word doc (copy it), and then go into my CS4 InDesign file and paste it into a waiting box that had a paragraph style assigned to it and boom, it would take on the assigned paragraph style of that text box. Now it brings in the style from wherever the text came from. If the font looks similar to what was there it can be too hard to tell that it's different. When you are working on a book with 200 pages and copying text from Word docs and dropping it in here and there in InDesign, it causes alot of extra work and problems.
    In fact I have lost alot of security functions I used to have in CS4 in CC2014 in InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat and it is making me want to go back to CS4 in a hurry.

    I actually FINALLY found the answer!!!! In the preferences area you choose Clipboard Handling and then you choose "Text Only" under When Pasting Text and Tables from Other Applications (see photo).

    Need detailed procedure on how to add an item with Item Style Check Box in Framework.

    The view instance should be the same as the view instance (view object) specified for your region.
    If the View Attribute already that you need already exists in the View Object then you can use it.
    Otherwise you have to extend the View Object and add the new attribute to it.

  • Using check Box in a Tree Region style

    I want to display some data in a hierarchical manner and use a checkbox for the user to select the node for which he wants to see a report.
    I need to fetch the node value where the user has ticked in the check box.
    I went through the documentation but it does not mention about using a checkbox.
    Can any one please let me know if we can use checkbox to tree nodes and to capture the user checked nodes do we have to make the VO based on an EO or even with a read only VO I can know which node the user has selected.

  • Framemaker 8 problem with paragraph styles

    Hi,
    I manage a documentation (one file) including paragraph styles organized like that :
    -- Chapter
         |--- Sub chapter
           |--- Sub Sub chapter
    My question is simple
    When a create a PDF file from my document, including bookmarks, I'm encountering the following problem :
    The "chapter 4", "sub chapter 4" and "sub sub chapter 4" paragraphs are created correctly. The bookmarks are created with the correct place.
    Like that :
    |---- chapter 4
      |---- sub chapter 4
       |----- sub sub chapter 4
    BUT
    The "sub sub chapter "5 paragraph styles are created into the "Chapter 4" structure, added with the "sub sub chapter" of Chapter 4. And the Chapter 5 just contains the "chapter 5" and "sub chapter 5" bookmarks.
    Like that :
    Chapter 4
        |---- sub chapter 4
           |---- sub sub chapter 4
           |---- sub sub chapter 5
    Chapter 5
       |--- sub chapter 5
    After checking the structure of my document, I do not find any thing which could create this problem.
    The paragraph styles seems to be correct.
    Thank you so so much to help me because I don't know how to replace the "sub sub chapter 5" below the" sub chapter 5".
    Phil ;o)

    There are a few ways to go with this. One is to put all the files in a Book,
    temporarily, and set the one with the correct style definition as the
    source, then synchronize the paragraph styles. This will change ALL styles
    with the same names throughout all the documents, and add any styles that
    are present in the source, but not in one of the other files, so it is a bit
    risky, especially if any styles are based on or [Basic
    Paragraph] itself is used in one of the files and it isn't already defined
    exactly the same in all files.
    You can also open any file and go to the Paragraph Styles panel menu and
    choose Load Styles, then select the style you want to load, and how to
    handle a conflict (Use Incoming), which will give you more control over what
    happens.
    Or each time you open a file and get the missing font warning you can go to
    Find Font and select the missing font, then pcik your substitute, check the
    redefine styles box, and click Change All. This would probably be the best
    choice since it doesn't depend on style names to make the correct changes.

  • InDesign Paragraph Style won't apply / change

    0 down vote  favorite
    Im hoping someone might be able to help me troubleshoot an InDesign question. Im a beginner-to-intermediate user.
    I am unable to apply my Paragraph Style to a number of my text boxes. I have tried holding Opt/Alt while choosing the PS with no luck. I have also checked for local overrides and character styles, and there appear to be none. The fly-out menu from the Paragraph Styles menu is almost all greyed-out, so it won't let me select the Clear Overrides option.
    However, when I double-click the text box to go into the frame, I am able to select the text directly and then apply the paragraph style to it directly inside the frame. This seems weird; Im hoping there's a way that I can just select the frames normally and apply a paragraph style as usual.
    The text came from a Word document that was flowed into each chapter, if that gives any help.
    Looking forward to some advice. Cheers, -Ben

    P Spier, thank you very much. What is the work around then to achieve this? Simply selecting all the text in all of the threaded frames and applying the Paragraph Style directly to them? Is it possible to select all of the threaded frames at the same time and apply the Paragraph Style to it? Advice for best method of practice is much appreciated.

  • CS4 PDF Export: Paragraph Styles to Bookmarks

    Hi,
    Is there a way of mapping bookmarks to paragraph styles for PDF export? I have a hunch there is, but I'm only finding the option to insert bookmarks manually. I want to structure the pdf by heading level for an interactive version
    i.e.,:
    Chapter Title
    -Heading 2
    --Heading 3
    ---Heading 4
    Thanks in advance!

    You must export to Acrobat 5 or higher, and check the boxes inthe export dialog to include the bookmarks, hyperlinks, and interactive content (the second too may no longer be necessary in CS4, but od habits die hard).
    I've had some trouble, and I think others report it too, with including bookmarks from more than one TOC.

  • Inserting a Check Box

    I have CS2. This should be an easy thing, but I can't figure out how to do it. I have made a table, and I want to type text and put a check box next to it, and I don't see how to do that. Please help. Thanks.

    There are many ways to create a check box (filled or empty).
    Fonts to look for include Zapf Dingbats and Wingdings. There are others, but these two are common enough.
    Use the Glyphs Pallete to add the dingbats/wingdings. Use the Bullets and Numbering to automate adding them. You can create a new column in the table to hold the check boxes, or you can edit your paragraph style to make the text have a hanging indent for the check box glyph.
    Using the paragraph style with a defined bullet is, IMO, the best option for "automating" placement of a check box. Go to the Bullet and Numbering section and change the list type to bullet, click the Add. button, define the font and select the desired glyph. Don't forget to set the indents.

  • Paragraph styles all default to wrong character style

    So I set up a template and based all my character styles on my basic body copy. However, every new text box I create it defaults to the "character styles" to my section header color and sizing. I have to right click and "clear character styles" every single time. I've never had this happen before and cannot figure out how to fix it, it is such a PAIN!

    From your explanation, I suspect your use of Character Styles might need to be redirected to Paragraph Styles. But that is conjecture, so I apologize if I'm wrong. In any case, to solve your problem; with nothing selected, choose No Character Style in the Character Styles panel. That sets the default for new frames.
