Chromium and privoxy

I'd like to use chromium with privoxy to block ads, but I can't get it to work. I installed and start privoxy, and it works fine with Firefox and Konqueror. In Chromium I go to the proxy settings and set it to manually specify them. Then I put the proxy IP (127.0.0.1) and the port (8118), but chromium continues to connect directly to the internet instead of connecting to the proxy. Has anyone got a proxy to work with Chromium? How?

I use privoxy with chromium but ended up using a small script to call chromium from wmii's C+a menu
#!/bin/bash
/opt/chromium-browser/chrome --enable-plugins -proxy-server=http://127.0.0.1:8118 --homepage

Does anybody know of a solution?

Hi rohshall, did you have any success overcoming these errors? I am also seeing something similar that started a couple of months ago and only seems to effect some apps. For me Firefox is the worst offender, originally only crashing every so often but now will crash within 10 seconds or so every time. Skype also crashes occasionally in the same way (segfaults).
    Looking into `dmesg` I see:
systemd-journald[137]: Failed to write entry, ignoring: Argument list too long
I imagine that this could be caused by a stack trace or something, but Googling for this error shows only a few unrelated threads.
In the end I completely switched over to Chromium to get away from the constant crashing of Firefox, and while Chromium itself doesn't crash on me, very occasionally I will find a tab that hasn't loaded or has crashed.
I'm completely at a loss here, the only cause I can think of is memory corruption, but then I would expect it to effect many other apps as well (eg. Xorg, or parts of the desktop environment).

  • Tor and Privoxy - what script should I start these with on boot-up?

I've got Tor and Privoxy running, but wonder where I should put the commands to start them? .xinitrc doesn't work, because I'm starting at run level 5, ie. logging straight into XFCE4.
I can't put them into the DAEMONS array in rc.conf, can I? *shrug*
    Any offers?
    Cheers.

Why not? They both provide startupscripts in /etc/rc.d/ which you can add to DAEMONS.
    Sweet, cheers man

  • Tor and privoxy

Hi I can't get Privoxy working with Tor.
I followed the Proxy routing with Tor and Privoxy but I can't seem to get it to work.
I want curl to POST stuff into privoxy which in turn gives it to tor. But Privoxy gives this error:
Privoxy was unable to socks4a-forward your request www.test.com through localhost: connect_to failed: see logfile for details
Just try again to see if this is a temporary problem, or check your forwarding settings and make sure that all forwarding servers are working correctly and listening where they are supposed to be listening.
    Privoxy log file:
    Jun 15 20:06:16.001 b75786c0 Fatal error: can't load actions file '/etc/privoxy/default.action': first needed line (409) is invalid: +limit-connect{-}
It says this line is invalid in my default.action:
    #    +limit-connect{-}                     # All ports are OK
Which is an commented line ?
If I uncomment it, I can't even start privoxy because it will give THE SAME ERROR ?!

The weird thing is that, having used tor previously and knowing the speed it has, i noticed, if i enable tor, and browse any page, its like if i were bypassing the proxy and connecting directly to the internet, ignoring polipo and, therefore, tor......
Checking the logs, i can tell that tor is working, but i have my doubts about polipo or my settings with switchy proxy.....
I already tried many times unsuccessfully...
BTW... the default tor config that gets installed with the package is the one that should be used, isn't it? I mean.. you dont have to touch tor's config: Only download the config file from the tor page and place it in /etc/polipo, am i right?

  • Chromium and the clipboard issue

I don't know how many of you guys are using pwsafe as password manager. It is a CLI application that stores usernames and passwords which are protected by a master password.
Basically the command pwsafe -up puts first username and then password in the X clipboard.
This works very well with firefox. If I go, for instance, on gmail and I use pwsafe -up the first middleclick on the username field pastes my gmail username and the second middleclick pastes the password.
It doesn't work with chromium though. When I try I only get the second paste. The first clipboard content gets skipped. So basically instead of the username the first middleclick pastes the password. If I try only with username (pwsafe -u) and I paste in the username field it doesn't paste anything. So for some obscure reason chromium pastes only the second content in the clipboard and not the first.
Any suggestion on how could I solve this problem?
Last edited by ArchArael (2010-03-04 20:54:34)

Searching the Chromium issues list for clipboard gets a lot of results:
    http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/list
You can just post the bug there and if its a duplicate, the devs will merge it.

  • How can Firefox be selective (access only same pages) while Chromium and Konqueror browse normally under openSUSE 12.3?

It looks like Firefox just access pages registered in my repository. Basically I can go to the openSUSE, Linux, KDE and domains alike. I'm writing here whit Chromium that browses just normally as well as Konqueror. I'm also a regular user of Thunderbird and it's working just fine. So, apart of Firefox, connection is working completely well both ways. True for torrents too.
I'm struggling whit it for a while and can't figure out what's going on. Firefox is really a big deal to me. Right now I'm having a hard time to run CodeSkulptor under Linux without it.
I' wanna the Fox back. Help!
    Fábio.

    @cor-el
I did it already. Both under Network Settings and Firefox. The about:config process. Yeah! Didn't work.
The link you provided seems to dig dipper than that. I'll read it. If I manage to solve it I will droop a feedback here.
Any other approach is welcome too.
    Thank you.

  • Scrolling in chromium and image panning in geeqie suddenly slow

I have a laptop with a Sandy Bridge processor (Intel Core i7 2670QM with Intel HD3000 integrated graphics). Before today, scrolling long web pages in chromium by clicking on the scrollbar, holding and moving the mouse was instantaneous, and panning (moving) large photos in GQview was instantaneous as well, albeit with tearing present (which I don't mind in those particular cases, I only care about responsiveness).
Today it suddenly changed. Fast scrolling in chromium lags significantly (it's elastic, if you know what I mean), same for image panning in GQview, though with no tearing present.
I haven't the faintest idea as to what could possibly have changed. I then installed Geeqie to see if it would change anything, and it did: panning was again instantaneous, with tearing. Then a bit later, with no modification on the system whatsoever, it started lagging again. So I rebooted, started X and launched Geeqie immediately to make sure that no other software could influence X or anything, but it was still laggy.
I don't know how to reproduce the change either way. Something is obviously escaping me, but I have no clue what. My system is up to date (pacman -Syu). I'm running Openbox with compositing disabled. Any ideas?
Last edited by apaige (2012-01-04 14:15:58)

Some additional details: firefox 9.0.1 (downloaded from Mozilla's FTP, not Arch Linux's package) scrolls instantaneously, and image panning in The GIMP is instantaneous as well.

  • [Solved] WebGL stops working randomly in Chromium and Firefox

    Hi
I'm using a Thinkpad x220 with an Intel GMA 3000 chipset, using the xf86-video-intel 2.99.912-2 driver for X11 and mesa 10.2.4-1 for OpenGL.
OpenGL is detected and working fine locally, glxinfo lists it, glxgears runs as do OpenGL-based games.
Yesterday, I updated my graphics drivers and now WebGL is not working most of the time.
When I open http://doesmybrowsersupportwebgl.com/ right after starting X11, it shows 'Yay' and lists the details of the WebGL capabilities of the browser. However, when I refresh the page a few times and/or restart the browser, it stops working and shows 'Nay'.
I will try downgrading the packages to see if this is actually related to the update (I never consciously used WebGL before so the issue may have been there for a while). I also tried fiddling with WebGL/GPU-related settings
    chrome://flags
    (Chrome) and
    about:config
(Firefox) but that had no influence whatsoever and since it works sometimes I don't think it's a browser isseu.
What could be the cause of this and where should I look for clues? If the GPU crashed, X11 would crash as well, wouldn't it? Can I make error messages emitted by the graphics driver appear in the Xorg log files? Did anyone here have a similar issue with the same chipset or not have the issue with a different setup?
Thanks very much for any responses!

For all the folks who might run into the same issue: The problem was that the environment variable
    LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1
is being set by compiz, my window manager (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … comments/4. Now, when I start any program, such as a terminal or a browser, from compiz using key bindings, direct rendering to the graphics card is disabled and so is WebGL.
The fix was to disable 'Indirect Rendering' using either Compiz Fusion Icon or by setting the env var before compiz starts.

  • Openjdk no work fine in chromium and firefox arch64

  • [SOLVED] Fonts different in Chromium and Firefox

I've installed all the microsoft fonts by copying over the TTF files from a windows installation, and as you can see, the fonts work in Firefox but not Chromium.
How can I configure Chromium to use the MS fonts correctly? In Chromium settings I have Arial set as my default Sans-serif font but it doesn't seem to work correctly. Clearly the font is installed because Firefox is using it and I can select it as my default font in Chromium
    Last edited by Tom B (2014-10-16 12:31:45)

I finally worked out what the issue is. When I pasted the fonts in /usr/share/fonts and ran fc-cache -vf I pasted as root (because /usr/share/fonts isn't writeable by other users)  but I never set the permissions on the files themselves! running chmod * 755 on in the /microsoft/ directory I created then fc-cache -vf solved the issue!

  • Kde4's ktorrent and privoxy/tor

Has anyone else had trouble getting the new kde4 ktorrent to work with privoxy and tor? I have the same settings as the kde3 version and it won't work for some odd reason. I have it set to send tracker communications through localhost:8118. Privoxy and Tor are both running and working in Firefox.
ktorrent says "Unknown Host: Unknown Error" in the tracker status box. If I disable the proxy settings in ktorrent, it does work.
I'm sure that I can't be the only person with this problem. By the way, the test torrent is the i686 iso for Arch 2008.6.

I use opera, not firefox, but to get Tor working with opera i basically configure opera to use a proxy which is: 127.0.0.1 : 8118
Maybe you could try setting up something similar, also I don't run "torify opera." I just run "opera."

  • Chromium and searching in bookmarks

    Hi,
when I tye e.g. "vim" in the address bar in firefox all of my bookmarked sites that contain vim or are tagged with that word are shown in the drop down list.
When I try the same in chromium only three of my bookmarks are shown and I have to open the bookmark manager and manually search for a site.
Is there a way to change this? This is the only thing that stops me from using chromium instead of firefox but for me it's a big issue not to have a quick access  to my bookmarks.

I think the search in chromium works for me as you would like it: it shows which items on the list are my bookmarks, which are the search terms (means I searched for that before) and how many items in my history contain that string.
Are you sure you imported all your bookmarks to chromium?
Edit: Oops, I think I get what you mean now: it shows only three matches from your bookmarks.

  • Chromium and his cache

I am preparing a USB flash with an installation of arch linux for taking on my long trip.... and i have quite few space on it, so, i have been investigating, and i want to do this:
First, i will make /tmp be mounted on ram with tmpfs
    Then, launch chromium like this:
    chromium --disk-cache-dir=/tmp
This should make chromium's cache be located under /tmp, won't it?: This way all the cache will be on ram (disappear on reboot + don't use any disk space)
Also, how can i make chromium always get launched with this flags? I mean, unless i explicitly set this flags on command line, i won't get this "feature" activated......

then rm -r /home/your_user/.cache/chromium (to delete everything you had cached)

  • Unresponsiveness in chromium and video/audio (?)

To keep it simple, I cannot watch any youtube in chrome. The system gets completely stuck after a short while. I tried changing video driver settings as recommended here to no avail.
I do not know what to do and desperately need help. And most likely it is not flash because even with plugin uninstalled sometimes (though rarely) the chromium gets stuck on start. But this always happens on youtube website. Pulseaudio screams this
Okt 10 20:46:30 sergei pulseaudio[393]: Unable to read or parse data from client.
Okt 10 20:46:30 sergei pulseaudio[393]: Failed to load module "module-gconf" (argument: ""): initialization failed.
Okt 10 20:46:30 sergei pulseaudio[393]: Module load failed.
google is rather unhelpful. But I have no problems with sound.
ps. There are also educational video on youtube

Yes, I have already disabled everything GPU related.
My next step is to try some kernel before 3.10.  As it looks from the link above it is where the problem originated. I will try some old distro next weekend. Otherwise I am really out of any clues. After all digging it looks like a hardware/kernel issue. I started looking at arch and my terrible skills and tried the latest linux mint and got the same issue there. So it seems to be _modern_ distro independent.

  • Chromium and HTML5 Video

Does anyone else get stuttering on this video:
    http://screencasters.heathenx.org/wp-co … ep101.html
It works fine in Firefox, but Chromium stutters the sound and image. I think it's related to HTML5 <video> usage because YouTube works fine in both browsers.
