Circle highlight

Probably a stupid question, but pre-FCP X I was able to add a slug and a mask to a clip and I could highlight (with keyframing too) any object. This was great for highlighting an athlete in a sports highlight video. I'm baffled as to how to do this with FCP X. Help!

Hi there
Captivate does not offer anything like this. I believe TechSmith's Camtasia Studio offers some of it in its recorder application. Additionally, there is a third party application called Presentation Assistant that you may wish to look into. http://www.presentation-assistant.com
Certainly anything like this will require recording in Full Motion Recording (FMR) mode. I'm not sure about Captivate 5. Perhaps it will offer much better FMR than Captivate past has.

  • Help making a circle simplebutton highlight & button...(Snapshots provided)

Hello, I've searched the forums regarding buttons and circles, but seems that I'm still having trouble understanding.
I've noticed DVDSP4 is filled with more rectangular/square buttons, I have been using them in the past. This time, I'm working with circle buttons on a menu screen.
Here's a snapshot of what I'm working with today:
The circle button that came with DVDSP is called "Circle Highlight" and is the only one I can find. However, it's really pixealated:
    /___sbsstatic___/migration-images/464/4647754-2.jpg
Is there a way I can recreate this button without it being pixelated? Does it need to be in exact dimensions with each circle in order for it to not be pixelated?
I'm a fan of the "simplebutton" that DVDSP provides, I currently have my settings set to this:
    /___sbsstatic___/migration-images/464/4647754-3.jpg
The above image is when it is activated. I would like to basically make a "simplebutton" button and highlight that not a square or rectangle, but a circle. I would like to know the means of achieving that.
Thanks so much for your time! Your help is greatly appreciated.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

When doing something like this, I usually make a layered menu in photoshop. I don't know if that's the best way to do it but it works...
You need to make a photoshop document with a few layers for each button - one layer for the inactive state, one for the active state and one for the selected state. All your inactive buttons can be flattened to one background layer because they stay on the screen all the time. So create your menu background first and flatten it into one layer.
Then, create 2 new layers for each button. One layer will be show how the button will look when selected. Perhaps you can put a glow behind your circle when the user navigates to it. The second layer will be how the button will look when it is activated. Maybe you color the circle in to indicate it was selected. Essentially, your photoshop doc layer should look something like this...
    button 4 active
    button 4 selected
    button 3 active
    button 3 selected
    button 2 active
    button 2 selected
    button 1 active
    button 1 selected
    menu background
Once you have the .psd created, import it into DVDSP, preserving the layers (do not flatten on import). Then select 'create new layered menu' (not create menu). Drop the document into the menu and all your layers will show up. Go to the menu inspector and turn off all layers except the background layer.
Next, create your 4 standard buttons like you showed in your picture - you can use the square buttons. Click on your first button, go to the inspector and you can select which layers will be visible there. So check the 'button 1 selected' box in the second column and the 'button 1 active' box in the third column. By checking these boxes you are turning that layer on when the user either selects or activates the button. Do this for all 4 buttons.
By creating the menu this way, you can still use the square buttons that DVDSP provide. When the user selects the button, it will only show what is on the layer that you selected in the inspector, which is the glow circle or colored circle you created in photoshop. Everything else is on different layers so if there is overlap with the next button you won't see that button's highlight because it is on another layer.
I'm not sure if this is the best way to do it but this is how I would do it. I haven't had any trouble doing it this way in the past.

  • Making a circle for the active button

I am running Encore version 2.0 and was hoping someone could give me a workaround for creating a circle that isn't all "chunky" looking as my active button. I created the menu in photoshop and would really like to be able to have a circle as my highlight active button, but for some reason, the only shape that seems to work is a rectangle or squareish button. Thank you in advance for any help.

I guess I'm not sure what you mean by "active button" and Highlight active button. If you mean that you want a circular video button with a circle highlight, then I don't see why you couldn't in photoshop, in a button group labeled (+), have a layer for the video labeled (%) with a circle (use elipse tool with shift) and filled with some color.
Then that same layer with the circle has to have a layer mask applied to prevent Encore from making it into a rectangle.
Then just put the same circular shape for the highlight (=1) on another layer and turn down the opacity for it in the "Edit Menu Color set" in Encore.
    Just a thought.

  • Spotlight or Spot Shadow/Highlight

Is it possible to create a spotlight or spot shadow/highlight effect in FCE with the native effects or filters? I am trying to create something that would look like a "spotlight" was used during filming with the camera (small circle highlighting someone's face).
I was thinking either creating a slight dark overlay over the whole screen with a "cutout" of normal contrast/brightness/color and changing the level opacity. Or a small circle with a lighter color/contrast brightness.
Is this possible within FCE natively or do I need an external filter?

I just figured out a way to do this last night (after much experimentation). In fact I was going to post a message here asking if this is the best way, or is there an easier method?
I'm producing a demo DVD for an entertainer friend, and in some of the clips she wants to use, it would be hard to figure out which of several performers on stage is her at the beginning of the clip. So I figured I'd use a spot shadow like I've seen on TV (where all of the frame is dimmed except for an oval around the primary subject). It is necessary that the spot shadow be able to follow the subject for a bit as she moves, and then fade away after a few seconds to leave the original scene.
Here are the steps I performed to achieve the result. Except as noted, all actions were taken in the timeline.
    1. I removed the transitions I had already placed at the beginning and end of the clip (they get replaced later).
    2. I turned off the linking between the audio and video tracks and then selected just the video portion of the clip.
    3. After verifying that the playhead was at the beginning of the clip, I dragged that video clip to the Canvas window and dropped it on the Overlay panel. The result was a duplicate of the video clip (from v1) in track v2, in perfect alignment. Make sure v2 is enabled.
    4. I went to the Browser, selected the Effects tab, opened the Video Filters->Matte folder, and dragged the filter Matte Shape onto the v1 copy of the clip.
    5. Double clicked the v1 copy of the clip to display it in the Viewer. With the Viewer Video tab selected, I see a mostly black frame with, with some of the frame's video showing through the selected matte shape.
    6. Clicked on the Viewer's Filters tab and opened the Mask Shape section to display its controls.
    7. With the playhead at the beginning of the clip, the Canvas shows the original video with no shapes showing. That's because the Opacity of the v2 video is still at 100%.
    8. Reduced the v2 clip's video opacity to about 50%. I did this by just dragging the opacity line down in the Timeline. Now the Canvas shows a spot shadow with the current shape parameters.
    9. Selected the Oval shape with the popup in the Matte Shape parameters (choices are diamond, oval, rectangle, and round rectangle).
    10. Used the Horizontal Scale and Vertical Scale parameters to adjust the shape and size of the oval.
    11. With the playhead still at the beginning of the clip, I positioned the spot shadow oval over the subject. To position the shape, click on the “+” button of the Center filter parameter; a small red crosshair appears in the middle of the shape; when I move the mouse pointer over the Canvas, it also changes to a crosshair; with the crosshair mouse pointer, I can drag the spot shadow shape until it is over the subject (note that if the mouse button is released, you have to go click that “+” button again to get the crosshair back).
    12. I clicked the diamond button (Ins/Del Keyframe) for the Center parameter to designate the first frame as a Center position keyframe.
    13. I scrubbed through the clip, watching the Canvas, and repositioned the spot shadow (see step 11) as necessary to keep up with the subject. Apparently, once you've set the first keyframe, each time you adjust that parameter again FCE automatically generates a new keyframe.
    12. I determined where in the clip I wanted the spot shadow effect to fade away. I used the pen tool to add two keyframes to the Opacity of the v2 clip by clicking on two points on its Opacity line. I then dragged the second point up to 100%, which produced a transition from 50% to 100% between those frames in the clip. With the v2 video's opacity at 100%, the spot shadow effect is gone, and you're left with just the original video showing.
    13. After verifying that the effect worked as needed, I restored the Cube Spin transitions I was using at the beginning and end of the clip. It was really cool that the spot shadow effect followed the Cube Spin just like I hoped it would.
I hope I didn't miss any critical steps (I'm writing this from memory). But it produced a very nice spot shadow effect that could be animated to stay with the subject. It's actually a lot easier to do than to describe, but I'm still wondering if this was the best way to do it.
    Good luck!

  • How to save drawings in a Screen clipping

    Good Afternoon Folks:
I have a problem in saving drawings  from a Screen clipping note. After capturing a screen, I will add a circle/highlight on a part of the screen in order to draw the reader's attention. Onenote however, saves only the screen clipping and ignores the
drawings and or any writings (annotations) I have added.
The only option I can think of now is to take another screenshot and use, does not seem efficient.
Can one of you experts help me out please?
    Thanks

Were other contents in your Onenote saved well?
I have tested in my machine in both Onenote 2010 and 2013, and they worked well.

  • How do I do this?: users are not able to change how the calendar interface looks, a central authority (admin or other) must be able to shedule events into the calendars of all users.

First off my advice is not to use your Mac as an Administrator only provide Admin Password when your Mac requests and only when your "Child" is not in the room!!!
It is all to do with Permissions:  Login as an Administrator click on Go in the menu bar, Select Computer, Select Macintosh HD, Select Users Select the User Folders you want to look at you will see a series of folders with red circles highlight each one in turn and Get Info unlock the Padlock in the Info pane then add Administrator to Read/Write
After this I hope you and your Son stay friends for many years

  • Mousepad/touchpad problem control button activates

    Hi,
Just bought a pavilion g6 and i have a problem with the touch pad. when moving the cursor around the screen the control button seems to suddenly activate.
for example the "find your cursor when pressing control" function kicks in and a circle highlights the location of the cursor on the screen
or even worse the webpage will zoom in and out as if I held the control button and swiped up or down with the touchpad page scroll option.
I am not using the mouse pad in any weird way. eg just using one (slender) finger. I cant find any reference to this being a known problem but i am checking here before leaving my laptop back.
is there meant to be some in built touchpad function that causes the control button to be able to be activated from the touchpad? If so can i disactivate it?

  • Create PDF or Print to Adobe PDF?

I have several Word and Publisher documents that I use as templates. I load them into Publisher or Word and then slightly adjust them (change names dates etc) before creating a pdf..
In the past I've almost always made the pdf by using the print dialog to send the job through the Adobe PDF printer, but seeing that there was a menu option in Acrobat X Pro to "Create PDF" I tried that.
Of course it worked fine but asked me to save the file before it could create the pdf.
As the file is a template I don't want to keep overwriting it when using the menu "Create PDF" option so I guess the question is - in this instance - is using the print dialog the best way for me to create my pdf's from my templates so that I'm not prompted to overwrite the original file?

OK one last question regarding PDF jpg image output quality...
I've printed two examples one through the Adobe PDF Printer - Standard Setting (pdf1)
and (pdf2) created with "Create PDF" (PDF Maker) from MS Publisher menu - again Standard Setting.
Both file sizes are pretty much the same and the "quality" of the image is nearly the same except that the pink circle highlighter (in the pdf) is much clearer in the file that was created using "PDF Maker" from MS Publisher menu.
PDF1 below was made with Acrobat X Pro Print dialog - Adobe PDF Printer - Standard Setting
PDF2 below was made with Acrobat X Pro "Create PDF" (PDF Maker) from MS Publisher menu - again Standard Setting
Is there a reason for this?

  • [CS4] Word Import severely broken/Interim Solution

As I said before on this topic,
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
The Word import has gone from already rather bad to worse with one of the upgrade patches. ...
-- read this for the symptoms.
I finally found a work-around. Strangely enough it was one that has been rattling in my head for a while, but I can't for the life of me remember where I got that idea!
The problem lies in Word's Bookmarks. These are not recognized by InDesign CS4/CS5 Import filter (but they are by CS3 and earlier!) and thus each one of them creates a mis-match in the following text, accumulating up to the end of each paragraph (or possibly the next one, it's too idiotic to check for those fine details). Only at the very end of the document, ID suddenly realizes it has a few text fragments left over, and decides to tack them on to the end.
    With results like this:
and yes, these text fragments belong somewhere in the middle of the document! Even worse, here you can see it's text that's been displaced, but it also happens with pure text formatting. Bye-bye smooth text import, hello Mr. Angry Client!
I reported this issue to Adobe "Support" (hum hum), complete with test documents, and got the quite unexpected answer that it was unrealistic to expect "perfect import" because, well, my page size was different in InDesign, my margins were different, the paragraph spacing doesn't work the same as in Word ... so it was no wonder the text was "not the same after importing".
Ahhhh ... now I got that out of my system: the solution is to remove all Bookmarks in the Word file prior to importing. For Windows, you can make a small VB Macro:
    Sub KillBookmark()
        While ActiveDocument.Bookmarks.Count > 0
            ActiveDocument.Bookmarks(1).Delete
        Wend
    End Sub
but for OS X you have to take the manual route: go to menu Insert, select "Bookmark", point to one, select "Delete". Repeat until bored to death.
Now that I have done the work Adobe programmers should have done (that is, finding out what the d*** problem actually was) and present them with a Ready-to-Implement Solution (revise the code that handles bookmarks): WHEN WILL THEY FIX IT!?!?
Please don't say "CS6". I'm still on CS4, and since it got broken in that version, I must insist on a fix for CS4.

    [Jongware] wrote:
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
Just where did you send the report and test files? There's no way to attach files to the bug report form, so were you talking to some contract script-reading idiot who passes himself off for tech support these days, or did one of the engineering team actually get back to you and ask for the files? I suspect not the latter, and I can offer some suggestions for whom to email. In fact, I think I may put a bug in someone's ear now.
Customer support, by e-mail. They *did* ask for files and I sent a whole bunch of them, original Word files, ID files to show how they got imported, and even separate screen shots of the problem pages with circles highlighting the broken parts.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
As far as getting a patch for CS4, it's always nice to see a romantic dreamer.
But Adobe broke it in CS4. I noticed it, working with CS4. I complained about it after noticing it in CS4, and I filed a customer support case (w/due documentation) for my version: CS4. It's Adobe's own fault, as they have such a bad customer support service that it cannot readily respond to complaints about the current version!
Sorry Peter, this has been discussed before extensively, and Adobe never looked into it before. Remember me asking if this was ever solved in CS5?
If you haven't escalated your case with customer support to a manager and then that manager's highest-level manager, like the DIRECTOR of customer support, that's a good thing to put into action. From there, insist that the case goes to the highest-level manager or DIRECTOR of technical support, so you can register it as a bug that will get attention, and at no charge to you for the tech-support call.
Allt this might just be a way to put makeup on an ugly and unchangeable situation, but, since you've already invested so much effort, why not give it one more try by depositing your investment on the highest-level person's desk?

  • Tablets That Support Drawing

    Hello All,
I have been using my iPad with the Connect app for awhile and really like the benefit as it works much better for me than using the mouse when I want to circle/highlight, etc. for students.  I also use it on a regular basis with my math class.  I am looking to get a new tablet and was maybe going to go the Android or Windows direction, but when I tried it on my son's Kindle Fire with the Connect App I did not have the drawing function.  Is there a list of tablets where the drawing function works or something specific that I need to look for.  Thanks in advance for your help.
    John

    Welcome to the forum.
You can review a list here by manufacturer:
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet-apps/flashruntimes/certified-devices.html
Or for reviews, etc., Google "tablets that support flash"
    http://www.google.com/#q=tablets+that+support+flash
Since Flash is not what it once was, make sure to do diligent research regarding if Adobe will continue to support the devices or are planning to drop support, performance per device, etc.

  • Photoshop newbie ~ how to make a simple highlight circle?

    Hi
I am a convert from Paint Shop Pro.
Now with PSP it was very easy to take a screen shot and highlight a button or area on the image by drawing a hollow circle or oval and set the border color and width.
I am struggling to find the best way to achieve this in Photoshop, any ideas please ?
[ Please see example screen shot, taken from a user guide ]
    Many thanks..!

I'm wading into this late, but for preparation of "how to" images I kind of like to do it this way:
    1.  Select the Ellipse Tool (I actually like the Rounded Rectangle Tool better in general).
    2.  Set it to draw a path only, and drag a path around what you want to draw attention to.
    3.  Create a new, empty layer.
    4.  Select the Brush Tool, set it to a few pixels in width, and not full opacity (say, 75%).
    5.  Choose a foreground color.
    6.  In the PATHS panel use the Stroke Path button to stroke the brush around the path created instep 2.
    7.  Add layer styles, e.g., drop shadow, bevel.
    8.  Use the Line Tool to draw arrows.
    9.  Use the Text Tool to add some text.
    10.  Copy the layer styles from the stroked layer to the other new layers (the style can be pasted onto multiple layers at once).

  • Pink Circles in Highlights with Olympus EP-1

When editing pictures in Lightroom, highlights such as clouds or lights are developing pink fringing, or circles, in the white areas.
    - This only happens in Lightroom, not in the Olympus Master software.
    - It does not occur in .jpg files.
    - It only seems to occur in blown, or close to, highlights such as lights, clouds, or other bright areas.
    - Occurs in both DNG and Olympus native Raw formats
    - Occurs only after zooming in on the photo -- so upon initial import its fine, but once you zoom in on the picture, the fringes develop.
I have attached a picture  -- notice the clouds in the sky.
If anyone has any ideas on why this is happening, or what can be done, please advise.
    Thank you.

It's a known bug, but is unlikely to be fixed before the next update.
