.CNT (TOC) Issues

HELP. I'm using WinHelp 2000. I have tried all the
suggestions and I still can't get new topics (and books) to show up
after I compile it under CONTENTS. The topics show in the TOC when
I'm working in Robohelp, but they don't show in the contents. The
topics show in the index. It used to work just fine but something
happened and I don't know what. The CNT file used to update when I
compiled (I guess that is when it did) and new books and topics
would show under contents. Now though, It's like the CNT file isn't
getting the new info. I have been able to manually go into the CNT
file and add the the new topics, but that is time consuming. Any
suggestions how I can get it to go back the way it was?

First of all, after you make a change to your TOC, are you
clicking File ==> Save TOC?
Second, try compiling with HCW.EXE directly. You will end up
with a .HLP and a .cnt file. Both need to be copied (manually or
with a DOS Batch file that can be used to automate the process) to
your destination directory.

  • Word 2003 Import - TOC Issue

I have a problem when importing docs into RoboHelp HTML X5.02
    from Word 2003.
The TOC generates with the correct structure based on the TOC
from my document, but the generated Topics are not linked to the
TOC books/pages that have been created.
I am having to use the Topic > Properties > Find Topic
dialogue and paste the topic title into the Topic Search field to
manually find and match all the TOC Topics.
The problem seems to have started when I began importing docs
in languages other than English. Now it applies to English as well.
I have found that I can intermittently import docs
successfully if the doc content is all set to US English language,
and the doc is imported from the RoboHelp starter, rather than from
RoboHTML. Even so this doesn't seem to function consistently.
Does anyone have any ideas? I am generating large Projects in
4 languages, and matching all the Topics manually is becoming a
    serious issue.

I forgot to mention the last column has some trailing spaces in the first row.

  • FM 10 TOC Issues! Help!

First, let me preface by saying I am an early-career writer that has taken a position with a company that had no prior tech pubs department or writers (first mistake?). I have had experience with FM 6 and 8, but this was at a larger company with established templates. My current company has no established templates or anyone to create them for me: I am the lone ranger here, and I have not used FM 10 before.
I discovered early on that the "standard" templates that come with FM 10 are garbage. I have managed to create some pretty decent chapter templates (lots of workarounds that I hope don't come back to bite me later on), so I decided to try and create a TOC for the book I created. Using the book TOC template supplied with FM, I have encountered a number of issues. Some of which I'm sure have to do with the fact I have never created templates in FM before.
    Issue #1
The auto-generated TOC marks every entry with a bullet and the page number is not separated from the heading with leading periods (..........):
My heading paragraph tags do not have a bulleted autoformat. I also verified that the Heading1TOC, Heading2TOC, and Heading3TOC paragraph tags do not have bulleted autoformats. After doing some research, it seems that the issue must be coming from the reference page (which I didn't know existed until today).
Here is what the reference page currently looks like for the TOC:
Interestingly, HeadingxTOC tags seem to be in the exact form I want, but they do not appear in the body pages that way! I have tried using the paragraph designer to add new tab stops with leaders for each of my entries, but the changes are never applied to the body pages. I can manually change the body pages, but once an Update Book is perfomed, all that formatting is replaced with the crap I'm trying to change. I have tried to manipulate this in so many ways to try and get what I want, but I have not been successful. Can someone please help show me the light?
    Issue #2
I'm not sure if this issue has been caused by my paragraph tags that I created, but I noticed that every heading (1, 2, and 3) that appears after a paragraph tag that has some autoformatted text associated with it (Table, Figure, Note, etc.), that autoformatted text appears in the TOC as if it is part of that heading!
Here is an example of what I'm talking about in the TOC:
Here is the corresponding place in the chapter:
This also happens even when there is another body paragraph separating the table from the next heading. Does anyone have any ideas about how to solve this problem?
If there are other FM 10 known issues, tricks, tips, or methods you'd like to share, please feel free to post them!!
    Thanks in advance,
    Smitty

    Hi Error,
Yes, I learned from trial and error (no pun intended) that the first two points you bring up do not work. However, the global update did work after I tweaked the settings a bit.
I think the issue might be coming from the Tab Stops. I'm not sure if this is normal behavior, but in the Paragraph Designer, my current tab stops look like this even though I have the 0.0" R tab stop applied to the selection:
Here is how I configured my customized tab stop:
    Anything here look fishy?
Also, am I supposed to have my cursor in a certain place when applying the tab stop in the RP of the TOC? I noticed that there are only tab spaces in the RP:

  • TOC issue - (Superscript)

    Hi there.
I am having an issue with my Table of Contents.  All my links works except for the items that have a superscript in them.  In the example below, when I create the PDF and hover over the items the three words of (Modes of Operation) are hot links that take me to page 26.  When I hover over the second entry I2C Digital Interface the only item that is a hot link is the letter I.  Our goal is to have the entire entry a hot link for customers to hit and go directly to the page.  I think the superscript is breaking the link.
    Example below:
    Modes of Operation .........26
    I2C Digital Interface ............28
    HELP!!!

    > I think the superscript is breaking the link.
And you would be correct. It's terminating a character range, and the hypetext generated for it.
See:TOC link with a subscript character does not work in PDF
To save you a click, the solution is to use a Unicode natively superscripted 2 (U+00B2, \u00b2 if you prefer to do it as a Variable), and not as a normal 2 with a <Superscript> Character Format applied.

  • Margins, footer, TOC issues

I have 2 issues formatting my newsletter. After going through forum postings for the last year and experimenting a bit, my need of having a TOC entry without visible Heading text has gotten a workaround. Apparently doing anything with Headings and text boxes will never yield a TOC entry so the workaround is to have the Heading text color be white (r whatever the background color is).
The other issue(s) involves margins (and possibly having a header without having a footer). I am using a 'mailer' page as the last page of the newsletter.
The document bottom margin/footer space ends up being an inch. This makes the information (return address and Bulk Rate permit) further down the page than I like.
The header on the 'mailer' page caused me to think and investigate a lot when the header info from the other pages of the document didn't carry over to the 'mailer' pager. I eventually discovered that this was a result of the setting in Layout manager > Section > Configuration Use - previous header & footers. This makes sense so that the footer can be blank and not appear below the address information.
So, does anyone have an idea/workaround so that my last page (the 'mailer' page) does not have this inch margin?
    TIA

I don't understand why the half-page of content is upside down. The person who does our church newsletter now does that. Of course, she uses Publisher! :-p I always left it right side up because when I get to the last page of the newsletter, I have to turn the page around if it goes the other way.

  • PDF TOC Issues

I am using RoboHelp 8 and the topic titles are truncated in my PDF table of contents. For example, the topic title is Java SDK and it appears as SDK in the TOC. Why are the topic titles truncated and how do I fix this issue? The TOC appears quite good in the Word ouput, but the PDF output is terrible.
One other thing - in the PDF TOC I am getting blank lines with just the leader (..........). The Word doc is not formatted this way. Is tehre any method for fixing this?
Also, I noticed that images are not exported when the PDF/Word document are built.  Is there a method for including these images in the build?
    Thank you in advance.

I was getting a "Missing Font" message and the explanation on the forum is that a bug in 10.6.7 caused the OS to UNEMBED fonts in PDF files!
Don't know who said that, but it's incorrect.
I built a simple text document with three lines of text. Opened three fonts not on the system, applied one each to a line of text and saved a PDF using Apple's built in PDF generator.
I then disabled the fonts and deleted them. With no fonts to find and the comment being true that fonts are not embedded, the PDF should display incorrectly. It didn't. I looked exactly as it should, meaning the fonts had to be embedded in the file.

  • Merging FlashHelp Projects TOC Issue

I was delighted to discover this morning that I can now merge
    FlashHelp projects!
I am running into an issue with my TOC, though. It won't
display. I've made sure my child projects have working TOCs, and
they do. But the parent TOC is being stubborn. The Contents section
is there - but nothing is listed.
Also, after reading through the help files with RH, they
suggested publishing the projects to a central location - which I
did try but it didn't work. Is this supposed to be for WebHelp or
do I need to do this for FlashHelp, too?
This is my first time trying this, so I'm probably doing
something wrong - maybe one of you pro's can help?
    Thanks!
    Crystal

    Hi Crystal
So are you running FlashHelp Pro ouptut and publishing to the
RoboEngine? If not, I don't believe you are able to merge FlashHelp
generically as you can with regular WebHelp.
    Cheers... Rick

  • InDesign CS6 TOC Issues

I can create a simple TOC but if I implement some of the options (eg, chapter head entry style) and then save and close, I can no longer reopen the file?
    Is this a known problem?

Thank you Peter. Your suggestion appears to have worked. I had created my CS6 file by placing an MS word document. That would seem to have introduced some sort of corruption. I saved my CS6 file to the CS4 option and then after closing and reopening that, I saved it as a CS6 file. I now have the same file type I started with, but I can implement TOC options without causing trouble.

  • InDesign CC 2014 TOC Issue

Forgive me in advance if this is a simple NOOB question that would be fixed with a simple checking or unchecking of a tick box somewhere.
Being new to InDesign, I've got my document all laid out nicely and looking pretty schmick. I've even got the TOC looking how I want... mostly.
Now, perhaps this is a design limitation, or like I said, a on/off switch, but I have set up my paragraphs in 3 levels for recognition in the TOC, and all looks good, except one header (lvl 2) starts mid-page, with a level 3 heading (leftover from the previous level 2 sequence) at the top of the page.
Now, by rights, the level 3 heading at the top of the page should appear before the level 2 heading half way down, when the TOC is updated, but alas, the L3 heading appears under the L2 heading in the TOC.
The question begs, am I limited to only being allowed to start a new L2 on a new page???

I don't think there's any way to sort paragraphs other than by story and position on the page when you sort a TOC in page order. When sorting by levels is possible (alphabetical sort), Level 1 is the top level and appears before Level 2, and so on.
Seems to me you re expecting the normal behavior -- your level 3 heading is above the level 2 on the page and you want it to appear before it in the TOC -- so what are you doing that keeps this from happening? Do you have one story, or multiple threads, on this page? Screen shots of the page, the TOC dialog, and the TOC might help.

  • TOC issues IDCS3

I have created several chapters for a tech manual, with each chapter numbered individually with chap#-page number starting at 1, appropriately inserted on each chapter master with a marker, prefix selected. I put all the pages in a book (ID-CS3). When I go to create the TOC all page numbers appear correctly except in chapter 2! those pages appear without the prefix to the page number. When I look at chapter 2 the only difference that I can see in numbering and sections panel is that the start section box is checked but greyed out! How do change this to make it "live". I want the TOC to read something like this:
    Product Overview 1-1
    Product Nomenclature 1-4
    Safety 2-1
    Installation and Operation 3-1
    Calibration 4-1
    Calibration screens 4-5
They all work fine except ch 2 appears Safety 1 without the chapter prefix

First of all, RH7 has introduced some new and some changed
project files, none of which you should be editing, and none of
which you should be mixing between project versions (I suspect
    that's the case here.)
You also seem to be mixing up source and output files, as
evidenced by your later posting, where you question the use of
    these:
    eHlpDhtm.js - what does it do? (
    internal-to-RH source file)
    whtdhtml.htm - what does it do? (
output file that holds TOC styles and calls internal-to-RH
    source files)
The purpose of the whxdata, whgdata, and whdata folders (
output folders that contain .js, .htm, and .xml files that
spread around the info for TOC, Index, and Search, for quicker
    performance)
You should have made a copy of your X5 project somewhere,
then opened RH7 and imported the project. Keep in mind that once a
project is opened in RH7, it cannot be opened in X5 (therefore the
admonition to copy the project elsewhere before you begin.
    Good luck,
    Leon

  • TOC issue

Working on a MacBookPro OS 10.6.8 InDesign cs5
I designed a book in InDesign. I styled all chapter headings the same and went to Layout > Table of Contents, I specified what styles I wanted in the TOC, then clicked okay. I get a message that says "The Table of Contents has been updated successfully." But the problem is, I don't see the TOC anywhere in my document and I don't get that loaded cursor either.
    Help!

Thanks for the tips. Nothing worked, although I suspect there was a hidden Text box somewhere that contained the ToC that I still can not find. Eventually I saved it as a new ToC style, named it and it gave me the loaded cursor and allowed me to place the Toc on the desired page. So, that was my work-around. Thank you for your suggestions.

  • ToC issue in InDesign CS6

Every time I create a Table of Contents in an InDesign document it works and looks beautiful but once I close the document it cannot be opened again. Lost forever. Any ideas?

  • RoboHelp Server 8 Not Displaying All TOCs When Going through the Engine

    Hello,
We recently upgraded from X5 to X8 and imported and converted our X5 project to X8 without any problems. After our conversion, we are having TOC issues.
Here is our issue. Not all of our TOCs are displaying when we veiw our project through the engine, but if we view the project directly (without) going through the engine all of our TOCs display correctly. I've tried creating a new TOC and checking the Copy existing Table of Content box and deleting the old TOC and that did not work. I removed the following characters in the TOC (&, <, >,) and that did not work. I also tried deleting a book with topic pages within the book and re-creating the book and adding the topic pages in the book and no solution. It seems like i've tried everything to resolve our issue and nothing has worked so far.Our books have topic pages linked to it.
I've searched the forums and i have not seen anyone else with the same issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi Ian,
Just zip them up and send them to me in a private message.

  • TOC for ePub Paragraph style editing

I'm trying to figure out if InDesign can allow us to editor the dynamic table of contents. What we have is basically this:
    Chapter number (unique paragraph style)
    Chapter title (unique paragraph style)
    First paragraph (unique paragraph style)
We want the ToC that gets pulled up in a eBook reader to show this:
    Chapter 1: Chapter Title
    Chapter 2: Chapter Title
Right now, InDesign seems to only export each as a specifc paragraph style, without setting them on the same line side by side. We get stuck with:
    Chapter 1
         Chapter Title
    Chapter 2
         Chapter Title
Does anyone know of a way to export the ePub so it's what we want rather than this hirarchically broken way?

This TOC issue has bugged me for years.
I have been able to come up with certain workarounds, but only when my physical (print) TOC just happens to be set up exactly as I would like it displayed in the ePub (this is not always the case).
It would be wonderful if there was a way for us to better control how the TOC info is output when exporting to ePub.
For now, the fastest and easiest way to deal with this issue (for me anyway), is to manually update it in the ePub file after export.
    Cheers,
    Ron
