Collaborating With Windows Word User

Hello,
I'm collaborating on a writing project with an Windows Word user. We will be exchanging editorial changes and I need to be able to use Track Changes between us.
Are both Word and Pages compatible in this way? If so, do you know what the most recent version of Windows needs to be used to get this functionality?
Thanks.

My limited use of this feature jibes with fruhulda's reply. However, you need to be aware that formatting issues tend to exist between Word and Pages import/export cycles. A simple document consisting of standard paragraphs and text styles aren't a problem but add in things like bullets, auto-numbered lists, and graphics and things get a bit iffy.
It's why I think that when documents must support import/export cycles it's safer to use a true clone of Office.

  • Errors between Mac and Windows Word Users

I am trying to exchange the same Word document with a Windows user that has the newest version of Word.
I use Word 2008 for the Mac. When my Windows Word colleague sends me a document, and I open it with Mac Word 2008, it has @ symbols, A's and = signs that should not be there.
I suspect that these might be some formatting tricks the writer is using (but not sure). My Windows colleague is willing to not use the offending functions, but I don't know what to ask him to not to do.

It is sent as a .docx The sender is using Windows XP and Word 2003. I have Mac OS 10.5.8 and Mac word 2008.
    He sends me: Test
    I get: ATest@
Most of the sentences in the document are fine but there are many errors nevertheless. The errors are more likely where parentheses or underlines are used.
Some errors occur where no parentheses or underlines are used.

  • I'm not responding issue on chat with Windows XP user

    Hi Everyone,
First off, My ability to log on is still spotty with a mac.com or AIM address. I've done everything from my last posting regularly but still get spotty log ons, appoximately 1 in 8 log ons is successful, the rest is hoist unexpectedly lost. I personally think there is much more than just my computer, time for an upgrade Apple!
My problem today is that I'm trying to chat with a buddy in Austria. He's running Windows XP and installed AIM 5.9. He ran through the set up, his camera was listed, he did the autoconfigure, set up the camera and has a good preview.
When I log on I can see him and he me. We can text chat with no problems. HOWEVER, no video chat
When he calls me, I double click, it opens to the preview screen, I click on accept and my window say video conferencing starting, then it says video chast failed because I didn't respond. This is incomprehensible to me since I hit the accept button and the video chat tried to start.
Furthermore, when I call him, it rings at his place, he clicks accept, we both get the preview and video chat starting message, then I get the video chat failed because I didn't respond message, even though I initiated the call.
That all said, apart from the spotty log on problems plaguing me, once I am logged on, I have absolutely no problems chatting with my wife at the office on her Mac.
So, if I constantly get I didn't respond messages as described with a Windows XP user but not with the wife on a Mac, I have to assume there's nothing wrong at my end, or shouldn't I *** U & ME at all??!!
Does the windows user need different ports than me, do I need to open additional ports, should I switch off my firewall completely?? He already tried switching off his firewall coompletely but the same message came up.
I pointed my buddy to Ralph's web site, but when we went there to get the windows updated component, it appeared to want to download the same messenger 5.9 that we downloaded earlier today, the file was the same 8.8 meg. Am I missing something Ralph?
Of course, there "may" be a language compatibility issue because 5.9 is English and he's running it on a german version of Windows (AIM only has text on AIM 5.1 for Gewrman users right now which has no video) but he didn't have any problems with the install or set up.
It's just really confusing. Any suggestions??

Curious, you said each other could see each other BEFORE initiating a video chat... do you mean that each of you could see each other in the buddies list?
As for not connecting to a PC user, you're not the only one having issues. I have been able to receive a video chat from a PC user, but not initiate one with that same user. Basically in order for me to receive a video chat from the PC user (they must initiate the chat), I had to go into my System Preferences > Internet and Network > Sharing > Firewall and then check the box "iChat BonJour". My firewall is turned off, however, if I do not put a check in that one box, the PC user can't video chat with me. Don't ask me why this is so since the firewall is turned off, it should automatically allow traffic on all ports... but alas, apparently that is not the case. That alone did not do the trick because the PC users router was not playing well in the mix. He connected directly to his modem (removed his router from the mix), and initiated a video chat with me, no problems. If he puts his router back into the mix, he can't video chat any more. If I deselect the "iChat Bonjour" setting, whether he is connected to the router or not, he will no longer be able to initiate a video chat any more. I tried removing my router, so that basically we both were connected directly to our modems, but that didn't help me to initiate a video chat with him. Text chats have never been a problem and both of us are using AIM as our intermediary.
I also have no problems whatsoever chatting with fellow Mac users... but then, we are all working with the same software/OS whereas the PC users are not.
Give my little scenario a go with your PC friend and see if he can now initiate a chat with you. I too would like to know what the PC user needs to enable as well... like specifics since merely saying open ports blah blah blah does nothing for someone who has no idea where to look to make those changes on a PC.
So what I have learned is:
    1. Merely turning your firewall off doesn't automatically enable certain port traffic on your machine, you must enable it yourself. This could also be true for the PC users as well, thus knowing where to enable said ports under WindowsXP would be greatfully welcome.
    2. Routers can interfere with the process. If removing the routers from the chain still results in no joy, then consider it to be a configuration issue on each machine. If removing the routers works, then your machines/software are good to go, you just now have to figure out why the routers don't like each other. In my case, my router works fine for him, but his does not work fine for me.
One should be able to connect to a PC if the PC can connect to you. Clearly I need to enable something else on my end or he needs to enable something on his end. The stuff should work, but our stupid machines are telling themselves to not work because we never told them that we want them to work. I know that sounds absurd, but I proved that was the case when I got the PC user to initiate a successful video chat with me.

  • Video Chat with Windows Vista User

I am trying to chat with my friend who is using a PC with Windows Vista. I am using iChat and she is using AIM. But the video is not working. The error keeps saying that either she has declined my invitation but in fact she accepted it. What do each of us need to do to get this to work?

    Hi,
AIM is currently posting this Info about AIM 6.5 which is the only version currently available for Vista.
Having said that about 30% of those who post about AIM here say it works but it does need allowing through the Firewall as an Exception as Steve has linked you to.

  • Moving/Linking Claims Windows Auth user to an ADFS Claims

    Hi guys,
    Here is my situation:
Initial deployment: SharePoint 2010 with Windows Authentication - Users login using AD
We successfully migrated the web application to use "Claims"
We then integrated the web application with ADFS 2.0 - Using the same AD users
Everything seems good and working fine.
The question I have is related to content already created in SharePoint. Is it possible to map the new ADFS account usernames to the existing windows authentication claims usernames?
This is important for users, because we would like the "My" views of lists and libraries to work. SharePoint at the moment thinks that the logged in users (using ADFS) is different than the user who created/modified the documents. (Although it
    is the same AD account)

    Hi Inderjeet
Thanks for your reply. The article did help in moving users (Move-SPUser) from AD to ADFS (Which I noticed in the securities in groups), however, the issue I'm looking for is still standing where the items that were created by the user using "Windows
Auth Claim" were not moved/updated to the "ADFS Claim" user, which in fact they map to the same AD user.
Is there away to transfer/update the created by and modified by attributes of users from Windows Claims to ADFS Claims user?
UPDATE: The above statement is not correct. Move-SPUser actually updates the created by and modified by attributes to.

  • BI Publisher Tab not visible in Windows 2007 with Windows 7 64 bit Config

    Hi All,
I was working with BI Publisher till last week in my system having windows 7 64 bit edition with Windows Word 2007 installed. When i started my work on Tuesday this week, i was not able to see the BI publisher Tab in the Word. But it's visible in Excel. I tried looking in to the forum and got solutions such as Enabling Macros, Enabling the Trust Access to VBA Project Model and Re installing Word and BI Publisher.I tried everything but still the issue is not resolved.
I dont find any *.exd file present in my system to prevent the Add-Ins from displaying. I'm not sure what update had made the BI Publisher to be hidden. Please let me know if you any suggestion or workaround as my project is in critical state with strict deadlines.
    Thanks,
    Bala Maheshwaran

If you cannot show the BI Publisher Macros in Word :
    1.     You have to uninstall the BI Publisher desktop
    2.     Install the BI Publisher as (Right-click on the "Command Prompt" item and select "Run as administrator".)
    3.     If you cannot show the BI Publisher macros and in word options show TBmenu as disable you have to do :
    4.     Click the Microsoft Office Button , click Word Options, and then click Add-Ins.
    5.     In the Add-ins box, identify the add-in that you want to enable and note the Add-in type located in the Type column.
    6.     Select the Add-in type in the Manage box and then click Go
    7.     Select the check box for the Add-in that you want enable and then click OK.
    8.     Close the word
    9.     Reopen the word , than appear the BI Publisher

  • LDAP account locking with Windows (smbldap)

We're running directory server 7 in our area and it's all set up and
working. We're using the smbldap-tools in conjunction to have the
    directory server allow domain logins.
The main issue is that we want to enforce account lockouts after 5
failed attempts. When using the built-in password policy in the
directory server to do this, and a user locks their account, they can no
longer log into any of the linux systems (what we want). However, with
windows, a user can still log in with their current password, if they
type a bad password, they get an error saying there's a problem with
their account....so the locking doesn't work.
My theory is just that the LDAP server is preventing windows from seeing
some of the attributes once the account is locked...probably preventing
info from being written to the samba bad password count.
Do you know if there's a way to modify the LDAP server configuration
such that when an account is locked out, to modify OTHER attributes than
the defaults? So, if the directory server enables the lockout, it
modifies not only the pwdaccountlockedtime field, but also, say,
    sambaAccountFlags?
    Thanks for any tips.

We're running Windows XP systems. Unfortunately we're not running AD, but rather a Samba server, which is storing its information in the Sun Directory Server. I'm not sure if the Identity Synchronization will work with Samba or not. I can also take a look at this windows bug and see if maybe just changing the timeout on the old passwords. If that prevents people from logging in due to an account locking, good enough for me. I think the biggest concern is that we prevent users from accessing their accounts in the event they get locked.
Is what I'm trying to do possible with an ACI perhaps? I'm not familiar enough with the ACIs to know. So, basically IF the pwdaccountlockedtime flag OR the smbacctflag looks a certain way, prevent users from accessing any information from the LDAP server.

I am a long time iTunes user but a new MacBook owner! I keep the majority of my music files on an external hard drive.   I'm trying to view all those files on my MacBook through iTunes.   With windows you would go to : File/Add To Library, and iTunes would add all your selected files to your music library BUT WOULD NOT COPY THEM TO YOUR HARD DRIVE.  In other words, if the external hard drive was connected, you could listen, drag/drop, and edit the files.   When I tried the same thing with my new MacBook... it actually started coping the files to my MacBook harddrive.  I don't want that, it's millions and millions of mp3's that I don't want to keep on my computer, only my external hard drive.   Can anyone help?    I'm sure it's something easy, I'm just so new to the Mac world.   Being an iPhone owner for many many years I'm picking up things fast, but this is getting the best of me!  Help !

In iTunes 11 uncheck the preferences setting in in the iTunes Preferences panel "Advanced > Copy Files to iTunes Media folder when adding to Library"

Yes, the license allows 2 installs for the owner's personal use. You can check this in the license agreement if you wish.

  • RFE: Some issues with the Pre/WebOS coming from the perspective of a former Windows Mobile user, Part I

I just switched over to a Palm Pre from a Windows Mobile device a week or two ago.  Now, don’t get me wrong here—I really do like the Palm.  For the most part, all of those things that were buggy, slow and inconsistent with Windows Mobile just simply work on the Palm, and that’s a very good thing.  However, when a product is so good, it makes the problems stand out all that much more, and with a lot of the problems I’m finding, the decision making on the part of Palm that led to the problem is just baffling to me.  I am hoping that I am just missing something on at least some of these issues, but so far, I have a laundry list of the things/features/omissions that I just really can't understand.  Because I have 8 issues, I'm going to break these down into three separate posts, with a few days in between each.  So, here goes PART I:
    1)  You can't select/manage multiple e-mails or text messages?  This is a pretty big problem, as I very consistently need to mark dozens and dozens of messages as read and then delete them, and swiping them off the screen one at a time just doesn't cut it.  Not only is it slow and painfully cumbersome, but it leaves them all marked as unread back in Outlook.  This really needs to be fixed, and I cannot imagine that even one single Palm user would disagree with me on this.  Actually, I think my bigger concern is how the product got developed without this ability in the first place, especially when prior Palm offerings apparently had it.
    2)  WebOS forces you to sort ALL contacts the same way?  I have many contacts set up in Outlook to be sorted by last name, and many others set up to be sorted by company name.  I've done this because that is how I need them sorted--sometimes the individual is my focus, but I have their company listed, and sometimes the company is the focus, but I have an individual contact listed.  Outlook, and every other contact management app I've seen, recognizes this, and allows me to sort each individual contact in the manner that best fits that contact.  Unfortunately, WebOS apparently ignores the Outlook "File As" field, and makes me sort everybody the exact same way.  As above, I cannot imagine anybody disagreeing with me that this is an important fix, and also as above, I can’t figure out why this wasn’t simply done this way from the get go.
    3)  No scroll bars?  Okay, so scrolling by flicking with your finger obviously works better than scrolling with a scroll bar along the side of the screen, but let’s not forget the fact that the scroll bar performs another EXTREMELY important function aside from actually scrolling:  the scroll bar provides the user with instant feedback as to how long the list is and how far down the list the user has scrolled.  These are two extremely, extremely useful pieces of information, and they are completely missing on the Pre.  I tried to look through some applications on my Pre the other day (more on the problems with the app store below), and I had a list of probably 100 or 200 applications that fit my search criteria, and I scrolled, and scrolled, and scrolled, and never had any idea of any sort how far down the list I had gotten nor how far I had left to go—and that was extraordinarily frustrating.  Oh, and if I wasn’t able to finish going through the list in one sitting, guess what, I have absolutely no possible way to run the search again and quickly get back to the point where I left off, because I have absolutely no idea how far along I had gotten.  I have to say, this glaring omission makes using the Pre on anything but very short lists and websites, well, unusable.  Scroll bars are everywhere—they’re there in every single program or application I have ever seen when the data presented goes off the available screen area, and there is a very, very good reason for their overwhelming prevalence—a reason that has nothing to do with the actual act of scrolling.  I think this one is probably my biggest complaint with the Pre.
I will post the next few in a separate post, but these are my "top 3".  To be honest, most of these just really leave me scratching my head wondering “what were they thinking?”  The Pre is a great product, but obvious little shortcomings really stand out on a good product (can anybody say “where’s the cut and paste, Apple?”, which, by the way, is a mistake that MS is about to bafflingly repeat with WM 7).  I should note that it would be difficult for anybody to say that I suffer from "One True Way" syndrome when all of the things I suggest, if implemented, wouldn't detract from the experience of those users who don't want these features, but they would benefit those of us who do want them tremendously.  My "way" doesn't require a compromise of any sort for anybody--it merely requires adding features, and the people who don't want/need those features can simply ignore them with no ill consequence of any sort.  Sorry for the long post, but I’m hopeful somebody at Palm is listening.  And yes, I know that posting multiple problems in one post is not ideal, but these all have a common, intertwining theme, and I'm at least breaking them up somewhat.

I really like my Pre, but I understand what you mean about somewhat baffling omissions in features. I think the Palm has a winning platform already, they just need to focus on hunting down and destroying bugs for a few months. Honestly, most of the things the Pre is missing should be provided by third parties except they're hesitant to invest because the pre and pixi haven't sold like gangbusters compared to Android and the iPhone. But really, if the price keeps dropping on palm hardware and they keep launching on new platforms (due soon on att), I think we'll be looking at a different view in a few more months. I'd wager that Palm has sold a bit less than a million devices, add Att and you'll end up around 1.2-1.5. If they keep fixing issues and making current customers happy, then launch a nice phone the end of this year, they'll be in good shape. You don't need to sell 15 million units to have a viable platform, just enough of a mass to ensure people want to take a risk developing. This is a 'known problem' as discussed on the MacWindows site, see http://www.macwindows.com/More-on-OS-X-conflicts-with-Windows-Server-Deduplicati on.html
It appears to still affect Mavericks 10.9.5 at least from the lack of any positive reports to the contrary. It is perhaps a bit late but it would have been worth signing up for the public beta of Yosemite and testing that and if needed reporting it as an issue for Yosemite as this will be getting more bug fix attention than Mavericks now.
I would agree turning off de-duplication is not a desirable solution, however other possibilities to consider are installing the standard Samba software on a Mac and using that instead of Apple's SMBx software. This is done by using the SMBup installer See http://eduo.info/2013/07/13/smbup-faq it does not officially list Mavericks but I did see at least one report that it still worked. A second possibility is to install ExtremeZ-IP which installs an AFP server on to your Windows Server and also gives the bonus of supporting Spotlight searches.
Note: You should only try SMBup on a test setup first.

But either way, 'Save as Adobe PDF' is a Word function, independent of what Adobe software you have installed.
