Colorsync Problems

I recently switched my main business machine to iMac. Mainly for layout work, and some photo editing. I have for years worked happily on PCs using Adobe1998 for RGB print destined originals, and sRGB for web based content. No problem with my understanding of how colour management hangs together on Windows.
Now... my Macbook display is a zillion miles away from the iMac display. Even calibrating it by eye I can see there is a huge difference in gamut. I have a particular image of very saturated red poppy flowers, and on the iMac, in GraphicConverter (latest version which is colorsync aware), it looks fine (very bright, due to the iMac screen) but not overblown. On the Macbook, it is simply impossible to view the image in GraphicConverter without the saturated reds being completely blown out. Of course, if I turn off colorsync in GraphicConverter then the image renders to the screens own gamut and the poppy looks fine.
I upgraded leopard on the macbook from tiger, but the imac was a fresh leopard install. Is it possible that the colorsync framework got screwed up during the upgrade of the macbook?

Does that mean that I have somehow uninstalled or lost those two applications?
Yes, that os a possibility. However open a Finder window and check for their presence in your Applications folder.
If Apple's Preview is not there you can reinstall it singly from your Installation disk.
A good application to do this is Pacifist, a shareware app' available here:
Pacifist
Download the correct version for your Mac Operating System.
And to avoid any problems in using it, read the documentation here:
Pacifist Documentation
Or you could just download Adobe Acrobat and install it to read your .PDF's. Make sure your get one that is compatible with your Operating System.

  • Printing with ColorSync Problems!

I cannot seem to print anything with Aperture using ColorSync for color management. I have set my monitor to Cinema display calibrated (yes, I have) and I set all the epson stylus photo 1800 settings, choosing ColorSync for color management, but my prints come out like darkened mud.
If I print with photoshop I get great prints, if I print with Preview and ColorSync I get reasonably good prints.
    Any ideas?
    dual 2gHz G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I figured out, after a while, that in the print settings window of Aperture you must set the color settings in 2 places. In the printer settings, as one would expect. But then there is a second drop down menu below the printer settings where you must set the printer/paper profile match that you want.
Once I figured that out, I am getting consistently more accurate color matches to what I see onscreen than I was in Photoshop.
(I use a 20" Apple Cinema Display with Monaco Optix color calibration)
    Thanks for the suggestions though.

  • Colorsync fail to fix color profiles under Adobe folder

    Thanks,

I think I found the problem..
Colorsync somehow opened an image I downloaded from (123rf.com) and kept the application open in my application bar at the background.
I think that caused the hustle.
After quitting Colorsync - problem solved.
    Thanks for your help!

  • 1DMkIII Colorsync Profile Bug?

I've recently been having problems with my 1DMkIII files and Aperture. The images are coming in much brighter than before including images I have already corrected and the highlights are blowing out to yellow. Made me believe there is a colorsync problem. In colorsync utility I clicked on the profile tab and the MkIII Generic profile. While cruising around I happened to click on the 1DsMkII generic color profile and had to do a double take. It is the EXACT same as the 1DMkIII profile, which should be impossible. I'm wondering when I upgraded to either Aperture 1.5.6 or maybe OSX 10.4.11 it changed the profile. If anyone is running 1.5.4 and/or 10.4.10 please check the MkIII profile and see if it different than the 1DsMkII generic profile.

I'm shooting with 1DsM2 not 1DM3 but... the Aperture profiles are not readily accessible in the Colorsync utility. I believe that Aperture, like Camera Raw & Lightroom, uses at least two profiles per camera and interpolates between them based on the color temp of the image file.
If you are seeing generic camera profiles its most likely from some other third-party raw convertor. It sounds like C1. Do you have C1 or Bibble or some other 3rd party convertor on your systems that allows for selecting camera input profiles? As far as I know DPP's input profiles are not accessible either.
Regarding your problem I have not seen any issues in terms of color and tone regarding 1DsM2 raw files and the change to 1.5.6 and 10.5.x.
Simple issues could be... if you've left color proofing on or the highlight hot areas on (and switched the color from red to yellow). Both are unlikely if you are seeing the issue on many computers but it couldn't hurt to check. Another issue could be if you've changed the way you profile your displays you could then look to see if the issue lies there. I once tried fiddling with the parameters in Eye-one Match and found that certain types of monitor profiles did not play nice with Aperture but worked in fine in Photoshop.

  • Disconnect+reconnect external display = washed out image

    hi guys
I need some expert help on this. Using a Dell E178 WFP external display on my 2010 Macbook Pro via mini-DVI-to-VGA adapter. This display has no EDID it seems so I use SwitchResX to create the necessary resolution override (1440x900). SwitchResX has nothing such as daemons or helpers installed on top, so this boils down to graphics drivers.
My problem: When I reboot the machine, the display has the necessary brightness, contrast, and colour balance. If I unplug the display, wait a sec, then plug it back in, the image comes up very bright and washed out, and I can't get a "true" black out of the display.
What this isn't: I have a ColorSync profile, and make sure it is successfullly loaded, i.e. I go through the trouble of opening up system preferences>displays>color to make sure it reloads. This is not a ColorSync problem. It is not the 2.2 vs 1.8 gamma problem either. Ctrl+shift+eject does not fix it. Creating a new colour profile does not fix it either. The usual SMC, permissions, safe boot, etc tricks don't work either.
Apple engineers have sent me a copy of TimingSnoop but were baffled by the display having a "fake" EDID (when run without SwitchResX TS detects no EDID at all). Since I refused to roll back my entire system to 10.6.4 or uninstall SwitchResX (it does not interfere??) they closed the bug stating "insufficient information".
10.6.4 did not have this problem, and my hardware is perfectly fine.
Rolling back the graphics to 10.6.4 fixes this issue (but creates other issues)
I'm looking for information on this. Has anyone had the same happen? Is it confined to sans-EDID displays?
Have googled a lot but I'm running out of search terms... Anything could be of help?
    Thanks in advance.

Again, this is not the gamma problem that's fixed by just opening the display preferences and resetting the colour profile.
This seems to be somehow related to the display's EDID and the video adapter (Nvidia) not resetting properly when first unplugged and then plugged back in. My support request with Apple is more than a year old in total now and replies have been trickling but all of them add little (if anything at all) to a fix.
My particular problem is finding these "a lot of" people who are experiencing this problem. Everyone I've seen so far talks about the gamma/colours problem, never about the brightness and reboot. So yours is the first instance of someone having exactly the same problem. Hopefully we can find more people? Do you know where I should be looking?
Another idea I've had is to possibly talk to the OSX86 community? If Apple are not interesting in issuing a fix for this, maybe someone else has done some work? After reviewing Apple's code (at least that part which is made public) I'm pretty convinced this is in Nvidia's territory, and that gives me very little hope..
I'm interested to know if this has been fixed on Lion at all..? Ideas?

  • Continued Issues with Snow Leopard?

I was hesitant to install Snow Leopard when it was released late summer of last year. I just bought the family pack to install on my Macbook Pro 09 and MacBook 07.
Has Apple offered an update to the OS since it was released to fix most of the common issues/glitches? I remember hearing people last year complaining that it crashed iMovie and Garage Band during exports, etc.
If problems still plagued the OS, what are the most popular? The apps I use most of the time are Adobe Acrobat, Adobe CS4 - mostly Photoshop, iMovie, iWork, iPhoto, iDVD, MS Office, and mail. Everything works perfectly in Leopard 10.5.8.
Should I upgrade now or continue to wait?

There have been problems with fonts in various versions and extra bugs have been added to how Preview converts .eps, ai and .ps files to .pdf.
    ColorSync problems remain unresolved/ignored.
Others have reported standing unaddressed issues in some of Apple's Pro apps.
From what I understand the speed increases have been mostly apocryphal and the installation has shrunk only because less was installed, as people with printing problems have discovered.
My AppleCare contact claims Apple gets less support calls with SL but then seemed to be ignorant of most of the issues I had previously reported back to Apple.
Hard to know what to believe.

  • How do I set up Aperture 3 for use with wide gamut monitor?

I use a NEC 2690wuxi attached to a macbook pro for my main screen when i do retouching on photos. Right now the images come up a bit neon on the NEC and look fine on the laptop screen. Is there a way to adjust this?...
I have no problem with this when working in Photoshop CS3 or Lightroom 2.6.
    thanks...

I have the same problem using my macbook Pro and a EIZO CG241W monitor.
I calibrate both the macbook screen and the EIZO and set the colorsync profile to make the EIZO the default profile. If I have aperture on the macbook screen all appears ok including the picture I open in Photoshop to compare. If I have the preview on the external monitor the colors are overly saturated in Aperture and no where close to the picture opened in photoshop. Strangely enough the thumbnail previews seem to show the proper color. It is the large preview as well as the mirrored screen (option+M) that show the wrong colors. I also notice that if I click on an image opened in Photoshop CS4 and drag it to the external monitor that as long as I hold it clicked the colors match those in the preview but as soon as I let go the colors change back to what I think is the proper colors. This means that Aperture is still using the macbook monitor profile even though the EIZO monitor has been set as default in the colorsync program. I have had the same issue with aperture2.
Photoshop, bridge, lightroom 2 and Phaseone Capture 1 Pro versions 3 through 5 all handle the profiles correctly. I have been doing pre press for european catalogues for years this way. I also reverted to OS X 10.5.8 after having installed snow leopard as snow leopard also had colorsync problems while using dual monitors on a Macbook Pro. I don't think anyone here in the forums will have a solution to this problem ,I can only hope enough people have complained to apple directly so that the software engineers will be put to work to fix this problem. Aperture 3 is absolutely impossible for me to use like this and I am very disappointed to have spent money on professional software that obviously does not work correctly on a dual monitor set up. And no.. I can not do proper color correction on my MAcbook Pro Screen!!
Should anyone have an idea how to solve the problem outside of the obvious answers I am all ears,
as of now I will copy this and send it to apple support!

  • ColorSync 72 DPI problem - Create Generic PDFX-3 (Flatten Transparency)

    Hi,
I tried to fix 72 DPI problem in native filter "Create Generic PDFX-3 Document" (ColorSync Utility Application).
I made a copy of default filter and changed the +Flatten Transparency+ resolution to higher value 300 DPI.
After ColorSync Utility restart my +Flatten Transparency+ settings were erased (my filter still exist but with no +Flatten Transparency+ value).
I tried both in 10.6.2 and 10.6.3 also in Polish and English localization.
As I know it is a common procedure to prepare PDF/X print-shop ready documents avoiding Adobe Distiller.

You will need to install the abracadabra ColorSync filters to get higher resolution pdfs.
This is a long standing problem with OSX which has default filters set to render all transparency at 72 dpi.
I would not use Pages for commercial printing. The dollars you save on software are quickly gambled away on the press. There is just too little professional support built in and Apple's neglect of Pro tools in OSX is the clincher for me. Stick with Adobe and Quark and avoid OSX's print engine.

  • Canon ColorSync says RedBlueYelllow.icc is missing along with three others in CS6.  How do I confirm and/or rectify the problem?  Does it matter?

The summary pretty well sums it up.  Don't know that it makes a difference, but I'm using an iMac running Yosemite.

I wasn't clear.  I understand that ColorSync comes from Canon and is linked to its color management system for, in this case, its Pro 100 printer.  My concern is that ColorSync apparently has found that four of 94 profiles are missing/bad.  I'm a novice at this stuff, but it appears that the four are part of Adobe's Photoshop color management.  So my questions are (1) does any of this matter and (2) if so, what do I do about it?  Again, out of the 94 Sync looked at, the four specific problems are:
    /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Color/Profiles/RedBlueYelllow.icc
Tag 'pseq': Required tag is not present.
    /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Color/Profiles/Smokey.icc
Tag 'pseq': Required tag is not present.
    /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Color/Profiles/TealMagentaGold.icc
Tag 'pseq': Required tag is not present.
    /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Color/Profiles/TotalInkPreview.icc
Tag 'pseq': Required tag is not present.
Verify done - found 4 bad profiles.
Any info or help you can provide most appreciated.  Thanks.

    Problem on Mac OS [ColorSync//Profiles/EW-sRGB
Tag 'desc': Tag size is not correct. Could not be fixed.]
My screen contrast has gone awry and the ColorSync Utility is unable to fix the problem. In searching the wisdom of the web, I found a response from 2009 on another forum, which referenced this forum. But the thread is gone. The information was in regard to the Color Profiler. Can anyone help? Has anyone had to deal with this? I found a lot of people looking to fix this, but not a lot of follow-up replies with answers. I have tried reinstalling the file from a back-up and re-booting, but to no avail. Some have suggested a problem with the Epson software. But without any detail, I don't know what to look to change. Any help, advice, cures, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Sorry, I thought you asked what course of action to take.
It means the data for that "tag" in the profile is not the size expected - I know, that's obvious too. The 'dmnd' tag contains the manufacturer's description.

You could try opening it in ColorSync Utility and editing the tag.

  • Color problems - ColorSync, Display Preferences, Adobe Products Crash

    Hi
Can anyone help me please - I don't know where to turn!
I have been having some problems with Photoshop CS4 where it won't start - It gets as far as "Reading Color Settings..." then I get the Problem Report window and CS4 closes.
Now, I read about repair ICC files so I open ColorSync application and when I click on Verify or Repair the application also crashes with the problem report window.
I've also checked if I go into Display Preferences and then click on the Color button - Display Preferences crashes and I get the Problem Report window...
So it seems anything to do with color settings I get a problem.
I have tried reinstalling Snow Leopard over the top of current settings and it still gives the same issues... I have also formatted the drive and installed from my Time Machine backup. I am loathed to reinstall fresh - is this my only way?
    Any help very much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Matt

Just an update for others. I did a fresh install of Snow Leopard without using my time machine back-up... I then restored my files after the clean install and the problem has gone.

  • Colorsync utility problems

I'm trying to get my printing straightened out on a 10.4.11 system that has been updated from 10.3.9.
Printing was perfect on 10.3.9, but is not good from the Adobe apps on 10.4.11. I put off upgrading to 10.4 as long as I could, because I knew so many folks had so many issues... I finally had to upgrade, and now I am hit.
My printer is an epson R2400. Prints are as expected from a MacBook Pro that has never been upgraded from one system to the next, and also from a test installation of 10.4.11 on a brand new hard drive. It is only the upgraded (via archive and install) system that I can't get straightened out.
Chromix is making some custom profiles for me, and they had me go into colorsync utility to assign Generic RGB as the default profile for the printer. Problem is, the R2400 is listed 3 separate times in Colorsync utility, although it is only listed once in Printer SetUp utility and in System preferences under printing and fax.
Resetting the printing system doesn't clear this up, nor does uninstalling the driver and reinstalling.
I don't know for certain that this is the cause of my color management issues, but it certainly does not seem desirable. The systems on the machines that print correctly do not have duplicate instances of the printer listed in colorsync utility.
I am not able to set a default printer in Colorsync utility, presumably due to this problem. This is the only printer installed, and it is listed as default the other 2 places.
An archive and install did not fix the issue.
Any idea on how to clear this up short of totally starting over with a fresh installation, from scratch? the printers are listed with unique ID's in Colorsync utility, but I don't know how to run anything down from there.

I am not printing with colorsync color management, rather I am using colorsync *utilty* to correct a misapplied color profile in the driver.
This is documented a few places on the web, and it is Chromix's answer to incorrect prints from ALL the Adobe applications... in my case, PS 7, and ALL CS2 and CS3 suite applications. Very specifically, the print error happens with Photoshop 7 and CS2 and CS3, and Illustrator CS2 and CS3, and InDesign CS2 and CS3. The solutions it to be certain that in your print stream, when you check the details of how the print is being sent, that colorsync is set to standard conversion, generic RGB profile, no quartz filter. The way you typically mange this, if the wrong RGB profile is showing, is by resetting it in ColorSync utility.
I am printing a a profiling target, so I am not setting up a conversion from source space to print space. I am sending with color management off.
The reason I didn't mention my workflow settings is that is not the question. The question is how to get rid of the spare printer instances in colorsync utility, becasue i think they are hosing my otherwise correct color settings.
My target print looks like it is being color managed incorrectly, even though all color management is disabled in the Photoshop print dialog and in the print driver. The colors are the correct hue, but they are much too dark.
Chromix has a little application you can print the targets from. Photoshop (all versions) on the system with the colorSync utility problem prints the target too dark compared to the Chromix utility, or to Photoshop on two other systems I have with no colorSync utility duplication of printers.
Again, I am not looking for help with my printing workflow, because that is not the question or problem. My prints are correct on other systems with the same version of software and the same print settings, as long as I can make the needed correction in Colorsync utility first.
the question is how to reset colorsync utility, or otherwise troubleshoot the erroneous feedback it is giving me..

  • IMAC COLOR FILTER PROBLEMS (ColorSync)

  • ColorSync "beep" problem solved

    Hello Forum,
Like many others I couldn't change the colorsync screen profile. All I got was a beep in the pref pane. I couldn't switch and I couldn't make a new calibrated profile.
This is how I solved it.
I logged in as Root user, renamed the Preferences folder in my user Home Library to "Preferences(original)", logged out as Root user and logged in my regular user account.
Then a completely new and fresh Prefs folder is created.
I logged out my user account, logged in again as Root user, selected all prefs inside the "Preferences(original)" folder and put them into the new and fresh Preferences folder.
By doing so I also replaced all new made prefs by the ones that where in the original folder. After logging out as Root, and logging in my regular account the problem was solved.
I hope this info is of some use for people with the same problem.
    Regards Wim.
PS, repairing priveleges and a disk check didn't solve the problem, I tried it first without luck.

    There was a problem?
I'm glad things are back to normal for you. Please post back if you encounter any other issues.

  • ColorSync 20"  Color Problems

I have gotten my hands on a 20" colorsync monitor to use for digital photography using OS 9.1 w/ photoshop 7.0. When I use the color calibration feature, the screen ends up with an overly blue hue. White appears as slightly blue. Is this normal with white point of 9300K? I had hoped to use this monitor because it self calibrates and I would not need to buy an external color monitor calibrator for $300. Is the age of the phosphors of the CRT causing this blue hue or is it misconfigured. When I turn off the color calibration it appears to be normal. Also, the brightness and contrast is all the way on in order to view the screen at a comfortable setting.

I'll assume you are referring to using the Apple software for calibrating the color, rather than just controls on the display itself.
This sounds normal. 9300 deg. K is normal for a television, but 6300-6500 is considered a reference for color temperature. The Apple ColorSync system is OK, but no match for a $300 calibrator. If you need accuracy, get a calibrator. Your settings for brightness and contrast seem normal for an old CRT. Usually a new one needed full contrast and half brightness or so.
