Composing Motion output

We are producing an animated trailer for our film.
There's a Motion-generated snowstorm in the background and Motion-generated 3D words that fly over head.
Each individual element looks great in Motion (great crisp edges), but when the indivdual elements are mixed in FCP, it looks as if it loses its pristine look.
I tried it a number of different ways. In the latest, I have the actual "motn" files right on the FCP timeline. The FCP sequence is set to animation. It still does not look as good as it does in Motion.
I was hoping to output a master file from FCP in Animation, and then transcode it for playback using ProRes.
Please offer me advise on a workflow, so the output can look as good as the canvas in Motion
By the way, you can see the final version of the movie I am talking about on this site (click the "See the Preview Film" link

This version is compressed for the web of course.
Using the latest versions of FCS
Thanks!

Hope all's well Steven!
Try exporting the movie as a QT movie from Motion directly (file/export) If you're mixing it with other material, choose the same format that you're attaching it to video-wise... i.e. HDV? or DV or whatever.
And of course judge it externally as always, not in the canvas... You only see a proxy of the quality of the movie there. Might try just importing it back into motion to see if it doesn't look better there...

  • Small frame rate variation between Motion output and reference video

    Hello all,
Here's really wonky sort of question for all you Motion/post-production wizzes out there.
I have a 1920x1080 lower thirds project that I am trying to synch up to a HD up-res of the same dimensions. The problem is that the up-res has a frame rate of 23.976 and Motion only allows for a frame rate of 23.98, so the output synchs up ok at the begining of each act (I have the projects split up into acts), but the further down the time line you go, the more it drifts.
I've done the math and, for this particular project, the last title begins to appear at 00:20:09:11 in Motion, but appears in FCP at 00:20:09:07, a drift of 4 frames, 3 short of the 7 frames it is supposed to drift if you multiply the timecode in secconds by 23.976 and 23.98, but none the less, very annoying.
Is there anything that can be done to remedy the situation besides going back after the final Motion output and resynching manually? A three or four frame drift isn't a huge deal, but the largest act I have is 32 minutes, which sounds like a 6 or 7 frame drift. Again not really a huge deal, but I do have several lower thirds that need to be frame accurate (and really, it would be nice if they were all that way).
    Thanks ahead of time.

Yeah. It kind of stinks when you have to swap platforms just to finish a project. AE is also a pain for longform, so I don't want to mislead you.
I would imagine that Motion would be fine as long as you break the Project up in sections. My workflow is usually like this:
Generate a matte or slug in a layer above the footage to fill the area where I need the Super or Composite. This should be fairly short (below 1 minute if possible) I may also have to RAZOR out the footage below the matte to match the matte timing. Select the Matte and footage below it if you wish to see the footage and sound in Motion.
    Select File/Send to/ Motion Project
Create a new Motion Project. Name it for the section I'm editing.
Add overlays and animations, filters, etc.
    Save project
switch back to FCP and view/render from FCP.
then move on to next section of timeline that needs overlays, repeat the procedure. Just copy paste the layers from one Motion project to another if you want to maintain certain layer continuity.
This way, the Motion projects are managable size and you don't have to re-render the whole FCP project at once. The clips are not long enough for sync issues to appear. And Motion performs much better when the footage is short enough to load into RAM (sub 20seconds for most people).
Also, to get the most out of Motion, you might want to turn off one of your monitors if you use 2 of them. Motion can use far more VRAM from your graphics card if only one monitor is active.

  • Compositing Motion output files

    Hi all-
I asked a question and many chimed in, but the answers didn't quite rectify the issue. I re-read my post, and I think the issue could have been better explained. Here goes:
We are producing an animated trailer for our film.
In Motion, we created a snowstorm (Motion project file #1) and a 3D words that fly over head (Motion project file #2-7).
The quality of each of these files looks GREAT when viewed in the Motion canvas on my 30" Studio display at 100% (great crisp edges).
I outputted each of the motion project files to a quicktime movie with an alpha channel using the ANIMATION codec set to 100%
The quicktime files, when viewed in quicktime look great -- just about as good as they look in the Motion canvas.
Now I need a solution to composite all of these ANIMATION quicktime files into a movie.....Final Cut, right?
So I did that and here is the result:
    http://rccm.org/longago.jpg
The top image is a still exported from quicktime using one of the individual motion project files
The bottom is a still exported from FCP after the composite...
WHERE AM I GETTING THIS HORRIBLE LOSS?
I've read the article on why images look bad on the FCP canvas, but the lower speaks for itself when compared to the upper.
HOW CAN I BEST COMPOSITE THE QUICKTIME FILES?
    Here's our workflow
    1) Create in Motion
    2) Output each element to a ANIMATION file
    3) compile all output files in FCP (in a 1920x1080 sequence using the Animation codec at 100%)
    4) Output from FCP using (????)
Using the latest versions of FCS
    Thanks!
    Many thanks!

OK....I changed the Field Dominence (in FCP's Sequence settings) to Upper (odd) and it now looks good.
    I tested the output.
I checked and rechecked -- I am outputting from Motion with no field dominance.
I'm glad we found this solution...but why is this happening???

  • Motion output for Full Screen Computer Viewing

    Hello,
i'm working on a project that needs to be able to scale. They want to be able to play it on a projector screen, tv, laptop, etc. What is a good project preset for this? I made a dvd of the project but when it's shown at full screen on a 15" laptop, it looks fuzzy. Is there a standard way to handle this kind of issue?
    thanks.

NSC video is 640x480 pixels (more or less) and that's all. You cna make the pixels larger but you can't get any more of them. What you've got to settle on is the level of acceptable resolution required to pull it off. Then you decide on an application that will playing it back. Then you decide on how to do the production. Your output format isn't as important yet as figuring out what it's going to play on. SD DVD is out because of limited rez. QT can play h.264 at remarkably high density. But not many PCs will handle h.264 without a bit of help. Flash could be your playback app. You've got to consider each for availability within your organization, local expertise, and likelihood of completion.
Most data projection systems will go quite high. IN fact, when fed standard video, the image tends to get really crunchy because it is being heavily processed; a small number of video pixels are being processed to fill the much larger number of projection pixels.
You're going to be making lots of tests and you've got to get everyone to understand some compromises are necessary. You might want to get outside help, try your local Macintosh user group?
This is going to be a very difficult project but the next one will be easy.

  • SMG file (Solidworks Composer) into Indesign Document

    Hello,
I am trying to figure out how to embed an SMG file into Indesign. I just took a Composer course, and we did it through Microsoft Word very easily through the developer tab and adding a Composer ActiveX contol. This then grabs the entire Composer file, animations and all, and placed it into the Word document, shown below:
My company currently uses Indesign for production guidebooks that show our production staff how to assemble parts on the floor. We are looking at going digital in the near future with these guides, and interactivity would be extremely useful. I have found this forum (Using SolidWorks Composer & InDesign? | SOLIDWORKS Forums) regarding a similar situation, but other than that I am at a loss after hours of trying. Composer has output options to HTML, but I can't seem to get that to embed either.
Please let me know if you need any more information. Please help!
    -Becky

There is no 3D model format that will import directly into Indesign with the expectation of full interactivity. If you choose PDF as a format to distribute manual, then you can import U3D format into Acrobat to have a fully interactive model within the manual. But the 3D model won't go through Indesign. One note, Solidworks can export U3D format. If you choose other formats for the electronic manual, you could have some levels of interactivity with the model. You could rotate the view in SW, export into a image format, create as many views as necessary, then import images into Indesign using Folio Overlays or Object States to accomplish interactive aspect.

  • Has anyone used Motion for 'still graphics' (300dpi)?

I used Motion a lot several years ago on a film. Great app. I'm producing a series of Ebooks right now, with many graphics. I'm using Pages, Photoshop, EasyDraw, for the graphics ... but remember how marvelous Motion was.
I'm wondering if it is possible to use Motion just for doing still graphics? And how one might set the resolution to reflect this (something like 300 dpi), ... or can one set any size (a very large 72dpi (given it's designed for motion and video) that can then be translated to 300 dpi after the fact.
If anyone has ever used Motion for simple non-motion graphics, I'm all ears,
    Ben

First of all, create a new document in Photoshop: enter your output format (US Letter, A4, whatever) with 300 dpi settings. Then change your units from to pixels and that is the size that your motion project should have.
Remember though, that Motion outputs only in RGB that has a much wider gamut than CMYK, which is the colorspace of print. So you might still have to color proof your image in Photoshop.
Also, depending on your graphics card, Motion has a limit of image sizes it can work on: 2K, 4K or 8K in the current models. For large print formats that could be not enough.
I would never use Motion for print jobs. However I can imagine that I could export (with transparency) some effects like stills from animated particles, 3D replicators and import them into my photoshop composition. So Motion could be used more like an extra tool.

    Hi
You can create a new layout with width and height as per your requirements and use the layout in WPC.

  • Continuous output on a waveform monitor

Running an older Black Magic HD Extreme video card on a G5; SDI output to a waveform monitor.
External video set to "all frames." Problem is the output only changes when I pause the video. This is a problem because I want to shoot video of the waveform output changing -- it's for an instructional DVD.
Is the problem that it's running on a G5? Would I do any better running it on my Mac Pro quad? I need to check on this because I would have to buy a new Black Magic card for $1000 to fit the Mac Pro so I don't want to jump into it unless I have to.

Is the problem that it's running on a G5?
No, your Decklink HD equipped G5 is plenty capable. If you are not getting a full motion output then you have some other mismatch. What are your source clip properties, what are your sequence settings, and what video playback preset have you selected?
    Cheers

  • Export from Motion - Soft in FCP

I created a graphic in motion, output it into fcp and the type and graphics are a bit soft.
The export was to a DVCPro DV Quicktime file.
    Anyone else notice this?

How do you fake a roundtrip?
I think I was talking out of my left nostril there.
What I meant was something like sending a clip on a roundtrip through motion, though you don't use the clip at all. Thus avoiding the file step.
    Now I think it's a terribly ill-conceived idea.
Somebody else just posted the same problem, as far as I can tell:

This makes it a Real Issue.

  • Filtering data from a table view to another

    Hi,
I am using a function module in Visual Composer which output sends a list of processes with related activities.
One process can have several activities and I would like to display all related activities for on process on a second table when a row of the first table is selected.
Ex: first table has two columns: the first one is the processes one, and the second the activities one. One process can have several activities so if I have 5 activities for a process, I'll get 5 rows with the same process number but different activities numbers. I would like a second table to appear when a row is selected, in wich all the activities of the selected process would be displayed. Is there a way to do that in VC ?
Thanks a lot for your help.
    Thibault Schalck

    Hi,
You can use filter to separate some records with respect to process and can display it in another table. But to meet your requirement create two function module one to display the processes and another one to show the activities with respect to the selected process.

  • PixelBender / possible to have optionals inputs ?

    Hi,
i m just testing pixel bender and i 'd like to know if it's possible to set input image4 as optional argument (i didn't see that in pixel bender's doc).
The effect i want to have is to composed an output from multiple sources ( couples of RGB + z-depth corresponding).
If i can't define optional input, i'll need 2 effects, one to compose a bitmap from 2 couples of sources and another to make a new z-depth which will match my new RGB to be able to do mutlipass and i suppose that will be less performant.
If input could be an array of image4 that could do the trick too, but if i've understanded well that's not possible (only array of float available).
    Any advices are welcome...
    WanH.

thanks for your time ...That 's what I finaly did  and it works well.Pixel Bender is a very usefull tool and I wait impatiently for next release.

Sorry, Pixel Bender doesn't have a notion of optional arguments.
Totally understand what you are trying to do. You could do it as two separate kernels (one with three inputs and one with two inputs), which is how we'd do it, but also hear the request for an input which is an array of image4s.
Cool requests, we'll see what we can do.
    thanks!

  • Blackmagic Intensity Pro problem plackback on external LCD TV

    Hi there,
Recently installed Intensity Pro card on my Mac Pro and trying to work on FCP6. I use a 1280x720 9 sec footage for testing but there's a problem to playback on a external LCD TV via HDMI cable. The playback on FCP canvas plays fine but the LCD TV just showing a still image. I've tried to test on a SD 720x480 footage which works fine both on FCP canvas and LCD TV even a general CRT 4:3 TV. Sure I have select the Video Playback under View to "Intensity HDTV 720p 60". Are there any other settings need. Will anyone knows what happen or need any settings? Please advice.
    Many Thanks.
    Kory

Kory - the BlackMagic card is temperamental.
With FCP, I've found that if I capture using the card, for a few seconds, that the output to the HDMI monitor gets 'fixed'.
Or, sometimes it will just start working on its own. Maybe after I stop and re-start FCP.
I even returned my card for replacement. Unsure why they have such issues. But once you figure, by trial an error, a technique for getting the display to work, it does basically work. It's just quirky.
With Motion output, sometimes I have to use the wrong output rate to see the output, and - then suddenly it will decide it wants the correct output rate.
    But, I'm going out at 1920 x 1080 - and haven't tried other resolutions.
Good luck. Try complaining to BlackMagic and see if you can escalate the problem up the food chain. Maybe if enough complain they will fix it (they were telling me that it wasn't supposed to display 1080p, but it certainly does - well, somehow converted to 1080i by the card or by FCP).
One other thing you might try, is an HDMI switch from monoprice. Might help with locking on the hdmi output. I use one of those for monitoring from hdmi input of camera, and I seem to remember playing with it while dealing with the no picture, or still picture issues of HDMI output to my monitor.

  • Wht does it mean of   " * " in Long texts of  potextheader-text_form = '*'.

    Hi Experts,
clarify one of my simple doubt, am populating the header text to PO, by BAPI, so, code is,

        potextheader-text_form = '*'.
        MOVE t_vbak-kunnr TO potextheader-text_line.

Some format keys are defined by SAPscript. They have a predefined meaning and can be used in all texts:
    "*" Default paragraph
The format definitions which are specified for the paragraph defined in the assigned style or form as the default paragraph are used for the output formatting of the paragraph involved.
    "/" New line
The subsequent text is written to a new line during output formatting. The formatting attributes of the last paragraph format are retained.
    "/:" SAPscript control command
The characters contained in the actual text line are not output as text but are regarded as a control command. They are not interpreted or executed until output formatting of the text. Control commands must always fit into a line fully. Subsequent lines are not allowed.
    "/*" Comment line
This line is not taken into account during output formatting of the text.
    "=" Extended line
This line is not subject to the line formatting in the SAPscript editor. The text contained in this line is appended directly to the character of the preceding text line which was output last. If this is not required, there must be at least one blank at the beginning of the extended line.
    "/=" Like extended line
But the subsequent text is placed in a new line during output formatting.
    "(" Raw line
The subsequent editor line is not interpreted by the SAPscript composer during output formatting. This means that character formats, symbols, tab characters, masking characters, or hypertext links which may be contained in this line are not evaluated and are therefore passed unchanged to the output device. The text contained in this line is also appended directly to the character of the preceding text line which was output last. If this is not required, there must be at least one blank at the beginning of the extended line.
    "/(" Like raw line
But the subsequent text is placed in a new line during output formatting.
    ">x" Fixed line
The line is not ready for input in the SAPscript editor. It can also not be deleted or separated. You can only create fixed lines with a program . You can therefore give a text a fixed structure, for example, which cannot be changed by the user.
You can use any number or letter for the 'x'. You can therefore separate different sub-headings, for example. If several fixed lines occur consecutively with the same indicator, they are regarded as a unit by the SAPscript editor. It is not possible to insert anything between these lines in the editor.
In the case of fixed lines, SAPscript print formatting interprets the first two characters of the line as a paragraph format for formatting. You therefore need to enter the required paragraph format or blank here.

  • Synchronize IMAQ1394 DAQmx

    Dear frds,
I am trying to synchronize image acquisition (input) and Piezoelctric transducer (PZT) motion (output) through labview. However, i have no clue how to go after it.
My camera is DMK21BF04 with external trigger allowing only mode 0 for triggered acquisition  It is a IEEE 1394 type. The PZT motion is controlled through labview using PCI6024E. The motion of this transducer will change the shape of the object viewed by the camera. I want to capture that change at the moment it happens. The change is continuous since i am ramping the PZT. I would like to capture this continous change using the camera and want it to be synchronized.
Looking forward for your suggestions and advices..
    thank you in advance
