Computer crashes when installing/running itunes

Question

Whenever I install itunes 6 or quicktime, my computer freezes and I have to turn the power off and then on again. The install program runs until I get to the final screen which says, "Click finished to close." Then whenever I try to launch itunes or quicktime, my computer freezes. The same thing happened after I installed the software that came with my ipod. Someone please help! I'd really like to use my ipod and not be stuck with a $300 coaster.

hmmmm. a freeze under these circumstances is actually kind of exotic.
okay, let's check to see if there's anything in your start-up items or running background applications that is interfering with itunes.
maybe check the background applications first. if you switch those off, do you get a successful launch? here are instructions. (although the document is focussed on installations, the same techniques would work for a launch):

if that doesn't seem to help matters, lets check to see if disabling other startup items will help:

(if we get the thing launching by either of these techniques, we can then try to work out by process of elimination what the culprit might be.)
