Conecting a V880 to a EVA8000 san

Hello all,
I'm trying to connect a V880 running solaris8 to our new EVA8000 san using HBA qlogic cards, currently the v880 is connectted to our old HSG80 san trought two JNI cards these are the steps I've done so far:-
1) Install HBA into server
2) Ran probe-scsi from ok prompt to see if t can see the cards (output):-
ok probe-scsi-all

    Resolution:     Top
Normally, this is the recommended action. But if the patch
that fails to install is 114877-xx or 114878-xx, then a
    rollback may not be necessary.
Both 114877-xx (Solaris 8) and 114878-xx (Solaris 9) patches the following
packages: SUNWjfca, SUNWjfcax, SUNWjfcau, and SUNWjfcaux.
The packages and patches are drivers for the JNI 2GB PCI Single FC Network
Adapter and JNI 2GB PCI Dual FC Network Adapter fibre-channel that have
Sun StorEdge SAN 4.x Foundation Suite compatible FCODE.
If server does not have this type of host bus adapter, then SUNWjfca,
SUNWjfcax, SUNWjfcau, and SUNWjfcaux packages are not installed on
the system. The patch will fail to install causing install_it script
    to prompt for a rollback.
For this specific situation, it is okay to respond no to the rollback
and let install_it script proceed to completion as the patch is not
    required.

  • Qla2310f not shown in cfgadm/luxadm (san 4.4.11)

I have a problem, with two qlogic qla2310f HBAs (not sun branded) that are not detected in luxadm/cfgadm.
The box is a SUN Fire 280R running solaris 8:
    SunOS [hostname] 5.8 Generic_117350-27 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-280R
Originally it was connected to an older eva-san(HP) using HP-securepath 3.0d for multipathing.
When changing to a new EVA8000 san, i did the following:
    1. Unmounted the san-disks, removed them fra Solstice.
    2. deletede them in spmgr (HP Securepath)
    3. unpresented the disks
    4. unistalled Hp Securepath
    5. presented disks from the new san (EVA8000)
    6. installed SAN 4.4.11 and required pathces, using the "install_it" script
    7. modified /kernel/drv/scsi_vhci.conf to enable mpxio globally and add hp specific Symmetric options for the eva8000 san.
After the reconfiguration reboot, i see the disks - however, i Cant see the two qla2310f in luxadm/cfgadm.
These utillities only see the internal controller, and the two internal disks:

I need luxadm/cfgadm to "see" the two qla2310f adapters, in order to use multipathing, any ideas?

    Same here:
V240 and X4200, QLF2340, Solaris 9 and 10 plus latest 9 recommended patch cluster connectec to McData and HDS.
Seems like a problem with luxadm and cfgadm, as on V480 with QLC2340 all works well...
    Any new patches/fixes?
    Cheers.

  • Solaris 9 , SAN attached MSL library : robotic arm access

Could someone provide information regarding Solaris 9 configuration issue.
On a V880 using LP10K emulex HBAs in a Brocade switches SAN environment, I am facing issue configuring HP MSL6060 2 LTO3 drive library.
I am able to tar to 2 LTO drives but I do not know the steps to configure access to the library Robotic controller arm itself.
emulex hbanyware shows 4 objects for the library i.e the library controller, 2 drives and library NSR.
At this point, at OS level, devfsadm creates only tapes special files.
I am more familiar with HP-UX than Solaris : What would be solaris commands to confirm HW is seen and usable at OS level (ioscan -fnC disks + insf to create special files on HP-UX)
On Solaris 9 : I have used modinfo , modunload, modload and devfsadm commands after st.conf modifications to gain access to drives without rebooting
BUT after sd.conf modifications, update_drv -f , devfsadm -v does not create any special file to point to robotic arm.
Overall objective is to configure Data Protector indirect backup for Solaris9 server and abitlity for that host to manage robotic arm.
    Any help appreciated.

I'm not sure if this will help, since this is from a very small environment, but here goes:
I recently attached an old Compaq Manatee class mini-library to a Blade 100 via a dual-channel LSI SCSI adapter and was trying to manipulate the robot arm via the open-source mtx utility.
Using the SCSI generic (sgen) driver, I was able to get this to work. Before I did the OS level change, at the prom, I did a probe-scsi-all and the system showed the two DLT7000 drives and the HP type 8 media changer. But without updating the sgen driver configuration, I could only see the DLT drives at the Solaris 9 level.
The configuration file for the sgen driver resides at: /kernel/drv/sgen.conf The file itself actually is quite clearly commented by default, which saved me a lot of research. In addition, man sgen is an excellent resource.
I added the following two lines to my sgen.conf file:
    device-type-config-list="changer";
inquiry-config-list=    "*",            "*";And in addition, since my changer is at SCSI id 6, I uncommented the following line:
name="sgen" class="scsi" target=6 lun=0;After that I did an init 6, and lo and behold in my /var/adm/messages file:
    May 15 13:54:22 baetica17.arxmicarus.lan scsi: [ID 193665 kern.info] sgen0 at glm0: target 6 lun 0
May 15 13:54:22 baetica17.arxmicarus.lan genunix: [ID 936769 kern.info] sgen0 is /pci@1f,0/pci@5/scsi@1/sgen@6,0Success! In addition, I found the following new directories and files in /dev:
/dev/scsi/changer/c1t6d0which is a symlink to the following physical device file:
c1t6d0 -> ../../../devices/pci@1f,0/pci@5/scsi@1/sgen@6,0:changerTo make specifying this physical device file easier in mtx, I also added this symlink to /dev:
/dev/changer -> ../devices/pci@1f,0/pci@5/scsi@1/sgen@6,0:changerMy example here is from my simple hardwire SCSI environment. I'm not experienced in the specific SAN environment you're operating in, but my guess is that you would probably need to make sure that you have some sort of persistent reservation for the changer made so that the physical device of the changer doesn't change between reboots.
Hope this at least gets you going in a productive direction! Please let me (and anyone else who might read this) know how you solved the issue at your site.

  • SAN boot disk in a cluster node?

As far as I remember, SC requires local boot disk.
Is it possible to use the SAN boot disk? Can this configuration work being just not supported by SUN or there is some technical limitation ?
I am thinking of low price configuration with two diskless X2100s + HBAs and SAN storage. Possible?

As far as I remember, SC requires local boot disk.
Is it possible to use the SAN boot disk? Can this
configuration work being just not supported by SUN or
there is some technical limitation ?The rule for boot disks gos like this:
Any local storage device, supported by the base platform as a boot device, can be used as a boot device for the server in the cluster as well. A shared storage device cannot be used as a boot device for a server in a cluster. It is recommended to mirror the root disk. Multipathed boot is supported with Sun Cluster when the drivers associated with SAN 4.3 (or later) are used in conjunction with an appropriate storage device (i.e. the local disks on a SF v880 or a SAN connected fiber storage device).
So your boot disk can be in a SAN as long the base platform supports it as a boot disk and it is not configured as a shared lun in the SAN (i.e. visible to other nodes than the one that uses it as boot disk).
I am thinking of low price configuration with two
diskless X2100s + HBAs and SAN storage. Possible? You need to check the support matrix of the storage device you plan to use, if it is supported as a boot device for the X2100 + HBA. If the answer is yes, you just must make sure that this lun is only visible to that X2100.

  • SD driver with SAN disk.

On Solaris 8 2/02 lastest new kernel patch, my server (V880 and SF15K) use jni card (FCE-6460) and use jni driver ( 5.x ). SAN disk is Hitachi 9960. I try to update new disk on the fly. After I use devfsadm command in order to reconfig devices. But system cannot generate new device. But I check JNI's ezifiber program. It see new disk. If I reboot system. System see new disk.
I would like to ask about sd driver. Can SD driver update new SAN disk on the fly? If SD driver doesn't support. Do you have plan for this method on sd driver ?

Sorry, I am unable to help you since I'm a new guy in this neighborhood.
I notice there are many unanswered questions in this forum. This needs to be improved. Come on Sun, jump in here and help us. Don't you care about your products and customers? I belong to a few other forums and this is probably the worst one.
I believe Sun needs to be involved in this and make this forum more active. It's good investment to help developers stand on their feet and get going when they're stuck with their problems. I can see people can get frustrated not knowing where to seek for help. After all, this forum is set up just for that purpose. But if Sun developers don't jump in here and help us, then this forum should not exist.
    Thank you for listening...

  • Get Switch SAN Neighboor Information

    Hi guys,
I'm connecting a lot of Nexus 55XX using FCoE in Brocade SAN Switches.
The Nexus 55xx are conected with a lot of servers using CNA and I have 4 8GB FC between each Nexus and each Brocade SAN Switch.
In the Nexus 55xx I'm using FcoE with NPV Mode.
My question is: I can get any information about the Brocade SAN Switch (nWWN, pWWN, etc) in Nexus 55xx.
I want to see if I can verify if I connect the Nexus 55xx in the correct Brocade SAN Switch but in the first moment I have no access to
    the Brocade SAN Switch.
If was LAN, probably I will use CDP or LLDP Protocol for that
    Thanks a Lot
    My Best Regards,
       Andre Lomonaco

since 5k is in NPV mode, you can use commands like
    'show npv status'
    'show npv flogi-table'
    'show npv traffic-map'
to check the details about connected NP ports. You can also go to upstream brocade if you have access to it and execute commands like 'nsshow' and 'nscamshow' to check status of downstream logins and 5k info.

  • Is 3910 series Sun Storedge support for SAN

    Hi,
We have Sun fire V880, E4500 & E3000 server. And also have 3910 series storedge array with one pair
of T3+ Box in RAID 5 configuration. I want to setup SAN with the above requirements. Is it possible in
3910 series storedge array. Becoz in 3910 series array, 2nos - 8 port FC switch only. But SAN needs Brocade silkworm fibre core switch. Anyone solve my doubt.
    Thanks.
    sathish.

In my opinion, a SAN does not require a switch. The hub is also a network component.

  • Windows Server 2012 - Hyper-V - iSCSI SAN - All Hyper-V Guests stops responding and extensive disk read/write

We have a problem with one of our deployments of Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V with a 2 node cluster connected to a iSCSI SAN.
    Our setup:
Hosts - Both run Windows Server 2012 Standard and are clustered.
HP ProLiant G7, 24 GB RAM, 2 teamed NIC dedicated to Virtual Machines and Management, 2 teamed NIC dedicated to iSCSI storage. - This is the primary host and normaly all VMs run on this host.
HP ProLiant G5, 20 GB RAM, 1 NIC dedicated to Virtual Machines and Management, 2 teamed NIC dedicated to iSCSI storage. - This is the secondary host that and is intended to be used in case of failure of the primary host.
We have no antivirus on the hosts and the scheduled ShadowCopy (previous version of files) is switched of.
    iSCSI SAN:
    QNAP NAS TS-869 Pro, 8 INTEL SSDSA2CW160G3 160 GB i a RAID 5 with a Host Spare. 2 Teamed NIC.
    Switch:
DLINK DGS-1210-16 - Both the network cards of the Hosts that are dedicated to the Storage and the Storage itself are connected to the same switch and nothing else is connected to this switch.
    Virtual Machines:
    3 Windows Server 2012 Standard - 1 DC, 1 FileServer, 1 Application Server.
1 Windows Server 2008 Standard Exchange Server.
All VMs are using dynamic disks (as recommended by Microsoft).
    Updates
We have applied the most resent updates to the Hosts, WMs and iSCSI SAN about 3 weeks ago with no change in our problem and we continually update the setup.
    Normal operation
Normally this setup works just fine and we see no real difference in speed in startup, file copy and processing speed in LoB applications of this setup compared to a single host with 2 10000 RPM Disks. Normal network speed is 10-200 Mbit, but occasionally
we see speeds up to 400 Mbit/s of combined read/write for instance during file repair
    Our Problem
Our problem is that for some reason all of the VMs stops responding or responds very slowly and you can for instance not send CTRL-ALT-DEL to a VM in the Hyper-V console, or for instance start task manager when already logged in.
Symptoms (i.e. this happens, or does not happen, at the same time)
I we look at resource monitor on the host then we see that there is often an extensive read from a VHDX of one of the VMs (40-60 Mbyte/s) and a combined write speed to many files in \HarddiskVolume5\System Volume Information\{<someguid and no file extension>}.
    See iamge below.
The combined network speed to the iSCSI SAN is about 500-600 Mbit/s.
When this happens it is usually during and after a VSS ShadowCopy backup, but has also happens during hours where no backup should be running (i.e. during daytime when the backup has finished hours ago according to the log files). There is however
not that extensive writes to the backup file that is created on an external hard drive and this does not seem to happen during all backups (we have manually checked a few times, but it is hard to say since this error does not seem leave any traces in event
    viewer).
We cannot find any indication that the VMs themself detect any problem and we see no increase of errors (for example storage related errors) in the eventlog inside the VMs.
The QNAP uses about 50% processing Power on all cores.
We see no dropped packets on the switch.
(I have split the image to save horizontal space).
Unable to recreate the problem / find definitive trigger
We have not succeeded in recreating the problem manually by, for instance, running chkdsk or defrag in VM and Hosts, copy and remove large files to VMs, running CPU and Disk intensive operations inside a VM (for instance scan and repair a database file).
    Questions
Why does all VMs stop responding and why is there such intensive Read/Writes to the iSCSI SAN?
Could it be anything in our setup that cannot handle all the read/write requests? For instance the iSCSI SAN, the hosts, etc?
What can we do about this? Should we use MultiPath IO instead of NIC teaming to the SAN, limit bandwith to the SAN, etc?

    Hi,
    > All VMs are using dynamic disks (as recommended by Microsoft).
If this is a testing environment, it’s okay, but if this a production environment, it’s not recommended. Fixed VHDs are recommended for production instead of dynamically expanding or differencing VHDs.
Hyper-V: Dynamic virtual hard disks are not recommended for virtual machines that run server workloads in a production environment
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee941151(v=WS.10).aspx
    > This is the primary host and normaly all VMs run on this host.
According to your posting, we know that you have Cluster Shared Volumes in the Hyper-V cluster, but why not distribute your VMs into two Hyper-V hosts.
Use Cluster Shared Volumes in a Windows Server 2012 Failover Cluster
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj612868.aspx
    > 2 teamed NIC dedicated to iSCSI storage.
Use Microsoft MultiPath IO (MPIO) to manage multiple paths to iSCSI storage. Microsoft does not support teaming on network adapters that are used to connect to iSCSI-based storage devices. (At least it’s not supported until Windows Server 2008 R2. Although
Windows Server 2012 has built-in network teaming feature, I don’t article which declare that Windows Server 2012 network teaming support iSCSI connection)
    Understanding Requirements for Failover Clusters
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc771404.aspx
    > I have seen using MPIO suggests using different subnets, is this a requirement for using MPIO
    > or is this just a way to make sure that you do not run out of IP adressess?
What I found is: if it is possible, isolate the iSCSI and data networks that reside on the same switch infrastructure through the use of VLANs and separate subnets. Redundant network paths from the server to the storage system via MPIO will maximize availability
and performance. Of course you can set these two NICs in separate subnets, but I don’t think it is necessary.
    > Why should it be better to not have dedicated wireing for iSCSI and Management?
It is recommended that the iSCSI SAN network be separated (logically or physically) from the data network workloads. This ‘best practice’ network configuration optimizes performance and reliability.
Check that and modify cluster configuration, monitor it and give us feedback for further troubleshooting.

  • 1) How to Boot from SAN for T4-1 Server with Solaris 11.1 OS on the disk? 2) How to SMI Label/Format a disk while OS Installation in Solaris 11.1?

FYI....boot from SAN is required for physical server (T4-1) (not OVM).
    1) How to Boot from SAN for T4-1 Server with Solaris 11.1 OS on the disk?
The SAN disks allocated are visible in ok prompt. below is the output.
    (0) ok show—disks
    a) /pci@400/pci@2/pci@0/pci@f/pci@0/usb@0, 2/hub@2/hub@3/storage@2/disk
    b) /pci@400/pci@2/pci@0/pci€a/SUNW, ezalxs@0, l/fp@0, 0/disk
    e) /pci@400/pci@2/pci@0/pci@a/SUNW, ealxs@0/fp@0, 0/disk
    d) /pci@400/pci@2/pci@0/pci@8/SUNW, emlxs@0, l/fp@0, 0/disk
    e) /pci@400/pci@2/pci@0/pci@8/SUNW,enlxs@0/fp@0,0/disk
    f) /pci@400/pci@2/pci@0/pci@4/scsi@0/disk
    g) /pci@400/pci@1/pci@0/pci@4/scsi@0/disk
    h) /iscsi—hba/disk
    q) NO SELECTION
    valid choice: a. . .h, q to quit c
    /pci@400/pci@2/pci@0/pci@a/SUNW, ealxs@0/fp@0, 0/disk has been selected.
Type “Y ( Control—Y ) to insert it in the command line.
    e.g. ok nvalias mydev “Y
for creating devalias mydev for /pci@400/pci@2/pci@0/pci@a/SUNW,emlxs@0/fp@0,0/disk
    (0) ok set—sfs—boot
    set—sfs—boot ?
We tried selecting a disk and applying sfs-boot at ok prompt.
Can you please help me providing detailed pre-requesites/steps/procedure to implement this and to start boot from SAN.
    2) How to SMI Label/Format a disk while OS Installation in Solaris 11.1?
As we know that ZFS is the default filesystem in Solaris 11.
We have seen in the Oracle documentation that for rpool below are recommended:
    - A disk that is intended for a ZFS root pool must be created with an SMI label, not an EFI label.
    - Create root pools with slices by using the s* identifier.
    - ZFS applies an EFI label when you create a storage pool with whole disks.
    - In general, you should create a disk slice with the bulk of disk space in slice 0.
I have seen the solution that using format -e, we change the labelling but all the data will be lost, whats the way to apply a SMI Label/Format on a rpool disks while OS Installation itself.
Please provide me the steps to SMI Label a disk while installaing Solaris 11.1 OS.

Oracle recommends below things on rpool: (thats reason wanted to apply SMI Label)
