Configuring ODB Shared Server on 10G

Hi,
Can someone please recommend some books or sites to get more detailed information on configuring Shared Server on Oracle Database 10G? I've been reading what's available in 'Oracle Database Administrators Guide', but I'm still not very clear on some of the concepts.
Thank you in advance.

Actually, the link you provided is what I've been reading. As for being more specific, it's difficult for me because I'm a newbie, and just barely learning something about this. I thought I was understanding everything fairly well, but then when I got to the part about dispatchers I started to doubt if I had really understood everything I had previously read about processes, shared servers, connections, and sessions. What I'm looking for is something that has a more in depth discussion about the shared server. I doubt anyone here would want to write a few pages about this, or go into a whole question and answer session about this, especially when I don't even really know yet what to ask yet.
Thanks for your help, but if there's anything else you or anyone can recommend to me I would greatly appreciate it.

  • Oracle 10gr2 rac, ora-12545 error when configured in shared server mode

Hi i have fresh installation on two node rac on linux, with oracle 10gr2. It is running successfully, when i configure it in shared server mode and try to connect from client it gives error ora_12545:
I have referred the oracle metalink notes and configured the local_listener as well as the remote_listener,
still it is giving the error. I am able to tnsping all the entries on tnsnames.ora,
i m also able to ping the hostnames,
It connects most of the times succeessfully but some times it gives the error.
    how to solve this problem,
    please help me

Basically this error means you misspelled the hostname or typed a wrong IP Address.
    Oracle Error :: TNS-12545+
Connect failed because target host or object does not exist
    Cause
The address specified is not valid, or the program being connected to does not exist.
    Action
Ensure the ADDRESS parameters have been entered correctly; the most likely incorrect parameter is the node name. Ensure that the executable for the server exists (perhaps "oracle" is missing.) If the protocol is TCP/IP, edit the TNSNAMES.ORA file to change the host name to a numeric IP address and try again.
I suggest you to check the dispatcher instance parameter.

    Hi,

What about killing the kernel process as it too sometimes causes high CPU usage? How about killing the swap process daemon for the same reason? Why even bother booting the server at all when there will always be the risk of this situation occurring, that according to you is so bad that it needs to be responded with killing the "offending" process?
Surely, by your reasoning, the best approach to this problem and prevent processes from sometimes using "too much" CPU, is not running any processes at all - and simply not powerup the server.
Sounds stupid? Well, so does your killing of a dispatcher process based on high CPU usage, without identifying an actual problem, or even bothering to determine what is causing that symptom of high CPU usage.
The very first step to ANY IT or IS issue is "*Identify The Problem!*".
All you have observed is a symptom - high CPU usage. This is not a problem. You need to determine WHY it is happening and that will tell you whether there is a problem.
Simply wanting to kill the "offending" process? That is wrong. Period.

  • Issue configuring DAD on HTTP Server within 10g App Server

This time with a sensible subject...
I am trying to configure the HTTP Server within 10g Application Server with a DAD pointing to an instance hosted on the same server. However whenever I apply the DAD settings and re-start the server I am told the DAD is down. I have tried many permutations of the connection string all without success. Has anyone else encountered a similar problem and can suggest a resolution. I am carrying out the same steps as I would for a 9i HTTP Server and can only think it is a difference for 10g App Server.

Reviewing the mod_plsql services page, it says 'Module Loaded No'. I have reviewed the httpd.conf and oracle_apache_conf files and both suggest that mod_plsql should be started but this is obviously not the case.

  • Configure Shared Server

    Hello All Gurus;
I m a new bie to oracle 9i working on Windows XP sp1. Where learning Configuring and Tuning Shared Server. I could not found the answer to the question how to configure a shared server or define in a Database that shared server will be used. Where and when it is to be defined on .... session/user/database level ?
    Pl. Guide me
    Thank You

    Hi Ora-boy,
Where learning Configuring and Tuning Shared Server. First, never use shared servers (MTS) if you have enough RAM:
    http://www.dba-oracle.com/t_mts_multithreaded_servers_shared.htm
Oracle's Tom Kyte notes that the MTS should not be used without a "real reason" and he notes that shared server connections are slower than with dedicated database connections (Oracle's default behavior):
"Unless you have a real reason to use MTS -- don't."
"a shared server connection is by design "slower" than a dedicated server (more stuff goes on, more complex) it is most likely only getting in the way."
Also, here are my notes on configuring shared servers:
    http://www.dba-oracle.com/concepts/shared_pool_mts.htm
    Hope this helps. . .

  • Migrating from  Dedicated Server to Shared server

    Hi,
Please let me know how to configure from Dedicated server to Shared server in oracle 10g.
    Any advises would be appreciated.
    Regards,
    - sridhar

It is not that hard, you only need to configure four parameters and check the listener to verify this has already been configured and registered. On the other hand, you should configure your tnsnames.ora file so you have the alternative to connect by means of a shared or a dedicated oracle server, otherwise the default, once the dispatchers and the shared server processes are configured will be shared server.
The four parameters to configure at the initialization parameter file are:
    dispatchers
    max_dispatchers
    shared_servers
    max_shared_servers
and you should create an entry at the tnsnames.ora file that declares a (server=dedicated) that will be used to connect by means of a dedicated server.
Further details on Howto configure the shared server can be found here --> Configuring Oracle Database for Shared Server.
One side note I'd like to add, shared server is suitable for scaleability in OLTP environments, if your kind of job is either batch or DDS you should open a connection by means of a dedicated server, otherwise you'll create a severe bottleneck.

  • "found dead shared server ... " errors occured in oracle alert log

    Dear all,

one more thing, my server is not configured as shared server mode, it is dedicated server mode. but I don't know why system inform me "found dead shared server..".

  • I cant get a shared server connection

Hello, I configured the shared server option on my computer, but every time I connect, I get 'DEDICATED' for the server column in v$session. Can anyone tell me how to establish shared server connex from your own machine please?
I am connecting like sqlplus scott/[email protected]
and it connects back to my machine (I think) with no error msg, but still I am getting DEDICATED for server in v$session, it is driving me nuts.
    Thanks.

Any idea what is causing this? I can find no references on metalink about this.
    Thanks!

    Thank you for your reply.
    Unfortunately I'm on 11.1.0.6.0.
Note 310177.1 lists 4 bugs that have been fixed prior to 11.1.0.6.0
Note 4739114.8 list is a bug fixed in 11.1.0.6.0
And the ORA-600/ORA-7445 Troubleshooter on Metalink unfortunately does not bring up anything other than the bug docs fixed prior to 11.1.0.6.0 (nor has 11g support yet).
    Has anyone else experienced this?

  • Shared server/dedicated server process doubt?

when oracle database is not configured for shared server is it compulsay to include SERVER=DEDICATED clause in the connect descriptor.?
    Thankx.

    Hi,
is it compulsay to include SERVER=DEDICATED clause in the connect descriptor.?No, the MTS is defined at startup time, via the MTS parms.
Here is a sample of shared server definition in the init.ora file:
    # Multi-threaded Server parameters
    local_listener="(address_list=
    (address=(protocol=tcp)(host=sting.janet.com)(port=1521))
    MTS_MAX_DISPATCHERS=5
    MTS_MAX_SERVERS=20
    MTS_DISPATCHERS="(ADDRESS=
    (PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=sting.janet.com))(DISPATCHERS=3)
    service_names=testb1
    http://www.dba-oracle.com/unix_linux/epc_disabled.htm
However, be aware that the MTS is not a panacea, especially at times when you want to invoke a dedicated process for your program. For Pro*C programs and I/O-intensive SQL*Forms applications, or any batch processes that have little idle time, you may derive better performance using a dedicated listener process. For shops that segregate task into online and batch modes, the DBA sometimes create separate listeners—one with the MTS and another for dedicated connections.
    Hope this helps. . . .

  • Shared Server and Dedicated Connetion

    Scenerio:
We have 1000 dedicated server database connection. My boss want me to configure one shared server connection out of 1000 dedicated connection for 100+ user of one particular module. Is it possible?
I guess if we activated shared server at database level then for 999 connetion we have to pass SERVER=DEDICATED at connection string. Which is not feasible for me seeing my current enviroment.

Unless you start using a shared tnsnames.ora file ( some where at a netwerk share ) and have pointing TNS_ADMIN to it, it means updating every tnsnames on every client you have.
    However I found this link:
    http://www.filibeto.org/sun/lib/nonsun/oracle/11.1.0.6.0/B28359_01/server.111/b28310/manproc003.htm
Where it says you can limit the number of concurrent shared sessions used by setting the parameter SHARED_SERVER_SESSIONS
Reading more of it, it looks like you can also define a seperate listener, with a seperate port for the shared server configuration and configure the dispatchers with that listener information.
So, it looks like you don't even have to change 1000 clients

  • Configuring Database Server to Shared Server Architecture

    Hello! Sir/Madam,
Presently Our server configuration is Dedicated Server Architecture, due to number of connections opening in the dedicated server, we are shifting our server configuration to the Shared Server Archiecture.
Will any One send me what are the parameters as to be set to Configure to the Shared Server Archiecture.
    Thanking U with Regards,
    Sravan
    Hyderabad.

I would suggest also reviewing the DBA Administration manual Ch 4 Managing Oracle Database Processes using the Oracle® Database Administrator's Guide 10g Release 2 (10.2) Part Number B14231-01 since it discusses the database parameter settings in some detail.
Remember to increase the size of the SGA to handle the UGA areas moved from the PGA into the Shared Pool.
I would consider continuing to use dedicated sessions for batch and any process that uses dbms_alert or other features that do not work well with shared server.

  • SAP db upgrade to Oracle 10G 64 bit - Dedicated or Shared Server ?

We current run 32bit servers ( approx 150 users ) and plan to migrate to ECC 6.0 on 64bit bit server. Question about upgrade <br>from Oracle 9.2.0.8 32bit to 10.2.0.4 64 bit . Database upgrade Oracle 64 bit should be Dedicated or Shared Server? <br><br>
My understanding ( limited), is Oracle 64bit dedicated server connection has the dedicated resource so whether or not a user is<br> doing work the connection remains allocated to that user. So for example, in our case a small Windows "shop" will needs <br>around 2MB of kernel space. So 150 threads, for 150 dedicated server connections, approx 150 x 2MB RAM.  Correct ? <br><br>
Whereas Shared server the user connection is shared, that is user is connecting by dispatchers and when a user is idle his <br>resource can be used by other users, thus lessen the load on system. So in this case maybe 5 dispatcher processes and <br>30 shared server processes to service the 150 sessions of the 150 users which seems very effective to me . <br>My main concern however is with some of the Finance people who get problems with huge COPA and SIS reports now which is <br>why we are moving to 64bit OS/DB/SAP<br><br>
Question is which does SAP ECC 6.0 support ( or recommend ) Oracle 64 bit Dedicated or Shared Server db migration ?

    > Question is which does SAP ECC 6.0 support ( or recommend ) Oracle 64 bit Dedicated or Shared Server db migration ?
Never heard that anyone uses shared Server Setup with SAP.
With SAP, it is NOT the user having a DB connection.
It is the workprocess, and it is keeping it even if all users are idle.
You allways have dedicated Oracle processes for SAP Workprocesses.
The rather old note 70197 states, that Oracle MTS (multi threaded server)
allowed, but you are on your own to configure it and there are some pitfalls.

  • Oracle 9i Shared Server Configuration

    My working platform is as:

    Database: Oracle 9i Release 2
    Database Configuaration is as:
Database: Manually created (not the default one) and SID = test
    Listener :
    Name: listener1
Port No. : 1523 (Not the default 1521)
    Associated with "test" database.
    Dispatchers: (PROTOCOL = TCP) (DISPATCHERS = 3)
    Shared Server: Set to 2
At Client side (connected through LAN) : I am configured a "Service Name" using Oracle NetManager and Set the following parameter : Connection type = "Shared Server", SID = test, Listener Port = 1523, Host Name = IP Addrs of Server Machine
In this scenario, whenever I want to test the connection from client side (from Oracle NetManager), it shows the following error message.
Listener is not configured to handle this type of connection
Please help me to solve that problem.

"Listener is not configured to handle this type of connection"
When I try to connect through Listener which is running at non-default port ( i.e. apart from 1521) the above message is shown.
As soon as, I checked the service status of the running listener and I observed that listener is handling one handler which is for "Dedicated" only. There is no other handler initiated for that listener to handle "Dispatchers"
