Confounding APE/Printing Mystery

Hello,
I have an Airport Express 804.11b/g that has work flawlessly for years. Connected to it is a Samsung ML-2010 printer. We print over the wi-fi network and that has worked great too, until now.
At this point, the computers can "see" the printer over the network, but nothing will print to the printer. A test page will not print. Network diagnostics says that it can connect to the internet but not the printer. I plugged the printer directly into my MBP and it works fine, ruling out the printer itself as the problem.
The only thing the printer will output is an unusual error message. It prints this randomly. The message is as follows:
INTERNAL ERROR - Incomplete Session by Timeout
Position: 0xf89 (3977)
System: h6fwsimmono/oshook
Line: 1056
Version: QPDL 5.04 -4-25-2005
Any ideas? Or is my APE shot for printing over the network?

I could have written your post. My experience is nearly identical to yours. I am a long time user of a Mac connected to a Samsung laser (ML 2510) through an Airport Extreme. Just in the last month or so I have started to experience random printing errors just as you describe. I wonder if it's related to my upgrade to Leopard a couple months back.

  • Printer suddenly unable to connect to network (invalid password)

I've had this printer for half a year and haven't had any issues with network connection till recently. For some reason my printer will no longer connect to our network. I've typed in the correct password multiple times but it always comes up with an invalid WPA passphrase.
My laptop and other devices have no problems connecting to the internet. The printer recognizes the wireless network but says the passphrase is "invalid". I printed the diagnostic and it says, "The WPA security passphrase configured on your HP printer does not match your wireless router setting". The solution they gave was "Run the wirless Setup Wizard to re-enter your wireless network WPA security passphrase."
    The solution does not help.
Some of the results from the printed diagnostic test:
    Connectivity> connected = Not Run
    Disconnect count total= 70
    Network> Network SSID Found= PASS
Settings> Printer settings consistent with wireless router settings, no filtering, channel = Not Run  /  Security = FAIL
Current Configuration> Authentication Type = WPA- PSK / Encryption= Automatic (AES or TKIP)
We are running on a 802.11 network, channel 11 (I don't really know what this means..but maybe it's helpful information?)
If anyone has some insights that would be greatly appreciated!!

My printer mysteriously started working again as well. Nothing has changed on my equipment. What gives?
As for the "Great" support from HP with the Static IP address, I don't see any replies from HP on this thread helping us out.

  • D5563 Printer

I installed the D5563 printer onto my laptop and use it via the wireless connection.  I have two really irritating issues with it and want to know how to resolve them.
Firstly, the printer mysteriously keeps going off line.  How?  Everytime I want to use the printer (which is not often) I have to switch it off, then on in order for it to work.
The second issue is with HP.  When I switch my laptop on, after a while a horrible blue square pops out that says "HP Update. An update is available. would you like to download and install this update now?"  There isn't even a yes or no or even an x-button to get rid of the message, it can't even be minimised or destroyed.

Is the Win 7 64-bit?  Tell me more about the Billion router - is it yours or your ISP's?
In the mean time we could start with setting a static IP address for the printer:
    - Print a Network Config Page from the front of the printer. Note the printer's IP address.
    - Type that IP address into a browser to reveal the printer's internal settings.
    - Choose the Networking tab, then Wireless along the left side, then the IPv4 tab.
    - On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). You can change the DHCP range of the router using its internal settings page.
    - Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
    - Enter your router's IP (ends with .1) for the gateway and first DNS. Leave the second one blank.
    - Click 'Apply'.
Now, shut down the router and printer, start the router, wait, then start the printer.
After this you may need to redo 'Add a Printer' using the new IP address.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • Apple LaserWriter 360 and OS 10.6.4

    Hi everyone.
I've got a new 27" iMac running OS 10.6.4. My old, trusty Apple LaserWriter 360 was connected to my older iMac through an Asante Talk box. Now that Apple has discontinued support for Apple Talk, I've ditched the Asante box and have purchased a Parallel-to-USB cable for connecting the LaserWriter to the new machine. I downloaded and installed GutenPrint, and everything printed fine ..... the first time!
Today, I tried to print again, but every time I sent something to the printer, the printer would say it was paused. I opened up the Printer & Fax settings in the System Preferences, located the machine, and it said "Printer Offline."
I restarted the printer several times, toggled through the numbers in the back of the printer, reset the printer utility in the Mac System Preferences, and turned network sharing for the printer off and on. (These are all remedies I had seen suggested online, BTW.)
But still, the printer indicates that it's offline. I thought, perhaps the new Parallel-to-USB cable was faulty, but if it were, wouldn't it have failed to print the first day I tried it? Also, if the cable were faulty, wouldn't I be unable to see this printer at all?
Does anyone have any other suggestions, besides buying a new printer? Thanks very much.
    -- Tom

OK. The new Parallel to USB cable arrived today, and now I'm more confused than ever. I connected the printer with the new cable, set the dip switch in the back of the printer to "1", and nothing happened. So I set the dip switch to "0" and voila! The printer was suddenly recognized by the computer. I tried printing a Word document, and although it was kind of slow, it printed just fine. Then I printed a 57-page PDF file, and that worked perfectly. Next, I tried to see if I could print from my other iMac through wireless printer sharing. The other iMac saw the printer just fine, and I sent a document to print. But it just hung up for so long that I ended up deleting the file, clearing the printer queue, and turning off network sharing for printing (I don't need to print from the other machine anyway).
But now, the iMac that the printer is hard-wired to says that the printer is "off-line" !!! No matter what I do, I can't print from it anymore. By the way, this is what happened with the first USB-to-Parallel cable I purchased: I was able to print a few pages, and then the printer mysteriously went "off-line."
So I don't think it's the cable, because the iMac still sees the printer. And it was able to print several documents before mysteriously going off-line. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm at a total loss here. Thanks!!!

  • Best place to ask an html5 question?

So I am a print designer with very little experience with html, css, etc. I have a client who has a programmer building a site for them that is running into some techincial issues in regards to what can be done using html 5. Does anyone have any suggestion on where I could ask specific question in regards to html 5? I know this is the DW forums, but the html 5 forums here look pretty dead so I figured this migth be a good place to ask where to go. And if you say here, then I will just repost with a more specific question.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions

You are absolutley rigth, it really does confound some print designers, me included. I see html and it just look slike giberish to me.
Anyways, this is one of my larger clients, so hopefully I can help them out. BTW, not looking to find out how it can be done, just if it can be done. The site in question lets the end user upload a large file and do a small bit of design to it. It then outputs to my client for printing. The issue is that it is really very slow becasue they are large files to start with. So is there a way to write code that would temporarily replace that large file with a small version, then reinsert it at the end of the process for printing. If you are familiar with ID or AI think of it simialr to linked low res version that then gets replaced with a high res version.
Strangley enough, it wasnt just me that suggested this to my client. Apparently his hosting company made the same susgguestion earlier on the same day. If was just me I would have probably just dropped it and said okay, that just isnt posible rigth now. But when the same suggestion comes from the hosting as well it makes me think maybe it can be done.

  • Printer Queue Settings Mysteriously Reverting Back to Default Settings on 2008 R2 print servers

Printer Queue Settings Mysteriously Reverting Back to Default Settings on 2008 R2 print servers
We have 4 Windows Server 2008 R2 print servers, all of which has the same printer queues installed on them that are utilized by a 3rd party printing program that does a round-robin load balancing scheme.
All printers are a combination of HP and Xerox all running some variation of the HP UPD and the Xerox UPD.  Some use the PCL 5 and some use the PCL 6 version determined by age of printer and need.
There are typically two printer queues for each physical printer.
    Example:
    LOCATION_ROOM
    LOCATION_ROOM_TRAY2
The regular queue is ok being left with default setting,
The _TRAY2 queues are set to print to "labels" or "pre-printed" paper type or a specific tray.
From time to time, these _TRAY2 queues will revert back to a factory default state and lose the setting to print to a specific paper type or tray.  Sometimes it happens to the _TRAY2 queue on all 4 servers, sometimes just 1 server, etc.  No rhyme
    or reason.
Disabled Bi-directional options on both the HP and Xerox UPDs per another article on the internet that said bi-directional could cause the printer to send back settings to the driver and cause this issue.  Even with this option off, we continue to see
printer _TRAY2 queue settings revert back to factory default and lose their specific paper and tray settings.  We have ruled out the possibility that users or other technicians are the ones making these changes so we suspect it is some interaction between
the servers, printer drivers and printers themselves causing the issue.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I'd start by using one of the print drivers included in Windows for a few of the printers and confirm it's the universal driver that is causing the issue.
HP installs some other processes and services on the machine which communicate with the HP devices.
PML and something else.  You might want to shut those down and see if these processes are the ones modifying the settings.
Run process monitor to truly identify which processes is causing the modifications.

  • MS Word 2004 print/save as pdf - mysterious blank page

    Hi,
I'm using Microsoft Word 2004 with OS 10.4.6. When I use the Save as pdf feature under the Print dialog, I keep getting blank pages in the pdf that don't appear in the Word Doc itself.
The Word document contains 30 pages. The first page is a jpeg graphic. I managed to get it to print fine the other day, but after my wife fixed a few spelling errors, I got a blank page as the second page in the pdf. Strangely enough, there is no blank page there in Word. I turned on invisible characters in Word and couldn't find any stray characters. The first page is a jpeg graphic that takes up 75% of the page.
All of the pages are formatted the same, portrait 8 1/2 x 11 with standard margins. Anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   MS Word 2004 for Mac

    Hi,
I tried pulling out the margins all the way the the edge, but I'm still experiencing the problem. I also tried reducing the image size significantly with no success. Any suggestions?
I also tried deleting the image. With the image gone, the extra page goes, too. The page with the section break is still there but mysterious page #2 is gone. When I import the image again, though, I re-create the problem.
I just realized I didn't try the 'Use Printer metrics to layout document' that Paul suggested and might look into that.
Any other suggestions? I hesitate to do it because the document is somewhat elabourate, but I might try rebuilding the first few pages in a new document to see if I add the image first and then add the text if it will solve the problem.
One other question. When I reveal invisible formatting, it does show two paragraph marks in the footer. This is the same for all footers on every page in the entire document. Could that be causing the problem? If so, do you know if it is possible to delete only the footer on the first page?
One other clue: I used to have a graphic on the back page and now that I think of it, there was a blank page after it, too. It sure sounds like your tiling description...
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Mysterious lines and gradient when printing from Illustrator or pdf on PC and MAC

First of all I have to admit I'm not a big computer brainiac but this issue keeps on reoccurring no matter what computer I use. When creating files/layouts in Illustrator and either saving them to pdf and then printing or printing directly from Illustrator either from a PC or from Mac (I use both) the print outs come out with mysterious lines and gradient not matter what colour is used. The lines occur on solid colour prints, when gradient or transparency are not used and when they are used as well. Any ideas suggestions how to make them go away?

    Monica,
Here's an image of a print out that was meant to be a solid black colour. This happens with other colours as well not just with black.

  • Acrobat-Reader printing creates mystery file.

I am having an issue with Reader and Acrobat on our Enterprise desktop image. Using the same installation source (transformed msi using Adobe tuner) on the Citrix server environments do not have the same issue. (only Reader on Citrix)

open any pdf in Reader or Acrobat.
    print the file.
The directory the pdf you printed now has a new file. The name of the file differs based on the printer you print to.
Example of file names using 2 seperate printers=

Network attached Ricoh printer via Windows 2008 print server. "IP_10.46.152.250" 0 bytes
I used Process Monitor to see what is actually creating the file thinking it might be the print driver.

I have seen this issue often in the large company I work. I don’t have a 100% fix. It seems to be related to users who created and using local IP port printers and not print servers. Because users have no rights to the system32\spool folder to write the temp file, it dumps this junk file on their desktop. Try correctly installing the printers using printservers and not creating local IP ports. An ugly work-around is to make the users system files hidden or create that file extension type (they usually use just one or two printers so the file type is the last 3 characters of the printer. What happens if their desktop gets filled up with the OS max junk limit, I don’t know because it hasn’t happened yet.

  • Print Booklet - OS X - PS to PDF with Preview, and a mysterious line?

    Hi,
I'm preparing something for print, and I've run into a couple of questions I'd love some advice on.
The printshop wants the A5 booklet as a A4+bleed PDF, so I'm producing 'Print Booklet' to a Postscript with the PDF PPD and using Apple's Preview to convert to PDF. Is Preview's conversion going to cause me any problems, for example any unwanted compression/other unpleasant surprises?
Upon conversion Preview is showing a hairline white gap between the now combined first and last page (see image below). In the original document the purple-ness extends beyond the 3mm bleed on the respective edge of both pages. I was wondering if anyone might have an idea why this would be the case?
    Thanks in advance,
    James

Hi, Your problem may be the creep setting. Set it to 0.  Also, I often encounter white hairlines (object boxes)  that come & go depending on the zoom setting. I've learned to trust they do not print at the print shop.
I have a questions to add to this.....
I just upgraded from SC2 to SC6 and swtiched from PC to Mac OS Lion (10.7). I'm having trouble with print booklet settings - I'd like to set to device independent, but it  won't seem to output on anything other than letter size; the settings to change paper size on device independent is greyed out). It will only print on letter size, meaning I only get the even pages of the booklet spreads. I too am a control freak and like to make sure everything is lined up perfectly before sending off to printer. I can get it to work if I use my home printer ppd (whimpy inkjet), but feel uncomfortable having it be dependent on that ppd as opposed to the professional printer ppd.
Our former printer imposed the pages from a pdf file... but our current printer wants it in booklet.
    Thanks -

  • Problems with 'Order Prints' from Aperture 2.1.3 Mystery borders

    *Some background:*
I've been using Aperture for about 3 months now, importing most of my iPhoto library into the program. I have only recently started shooting in RAW format, most of my photos image files are in JPG format. In the past, I've had no problems with obtaining prints from within iPhoto or to a limited extent Aperture. So, far as I know my program is up-to-date. I have 2 plugins installed: Aperture2twitter and *flickr export Lite* both of which work acceptably.
*The problem:* I ordered 317 4×6 prints from my aperture library.
Every photo has a 1/4″ border on both sides of the image, i.e. the printed image is only 4×5 1/2″. I have never ordered this quantity before, but I don’t believe that was the problem, it appears that the processing machine was misaligned and no one reviewed the prints prior to shipping.
I tried again, on 4 different images ... all JPG files with 3 out of 4 were OK, but one exhibited the "border" issue.
I haven't a clue what is going on here. Apple implied +(via email)+ that I would have to individually crop every photo to ensure proper aspect ratio. This makes no sense to me at all, as I have never had this kinda problem before.
Could the plugin(s) be interfering with the s/w? Is there a trick to having photos printed from within Aperture that was not present in iPhoto?
Any thoughts on what the problem is would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    -john

I believe that I've solved this problem, with the help of the folks at Apple who handle Aperture tech support using the Aperture support ID that came with the product.
So the short answer is: Aperture print services REALLY DO REQUIRE the image to be cropped (constrained as they say) prior to the data being sent to Apple Print services.
Here is the link that describes cropping http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1993?viewlocale=en_US
The process as described is cumbersome, but the support tech pointed out that in Aperture, crops are 'non-destrutive' and can be undone simply by removing the check mark on the Adjustments tab of the image you crop. *This means that you do not have to make a duplicate image for cropping.*
So, here is the process that I arrived at to ensure that my "order prints" job turned out:
    1. create an album of all the photos you want to submit for printing.
    2. for each image call up the Crop HUD by pressing 'c' on the keyboard.
3.select the aspect ratio that you want for your photo. Make sure that it does NOT SAY Master Aspect Ratio, or Main Display Aspect Ratio.
    4. Crop the photo
on the adjustments tab you can see the X and Y data and Height / Width information which can be undone.
    5. Submit your print request to Apple for all the cropped photos.
When the prints arrive, you can compare the prints with the submitted photos. They should all be good. You can then delete the album (since it really is not a physical thing) or keep it for reference.
It all seemed a bit arcane to me, as I never had to worry about this in iPhoto. It must be that iPhoto sends different data than Aperture. I have just received 200 + prints back from Apple Print Services with about 98% success rate. I just have to adjust my thinking and my process when dealing with Aperture.

  • Failed to print... AGAIN. (c6380 all in one mystery)

    Hello.
I have a 6380 all in one and generally try to print from my laptop running vista - all wireless.  More often than not the document "fails to print" and offers only "error printing" in the print box.  Diagnostics run from the computer and hp.com don't lead to any answers.  Sometimes a document prints later, like after I've left the house.  I'm not sure where to look anymore.
Additionally, the printer is constantly telling me I'm low on ink when I haven't possibly used it up.  I find it hard to believe the readings it offers.  Ideas, anyone?
    Thank you!

All printers can be used with AirPrint, including ones that are not even wireless, as long as they are attached to your PC or Mac.
It simply involves downloading the AirPrint software and installing it as a service on your PC or Mac. It is fairly easy to do, just follow this link, and be sure to read the discussion.
    http://jaxov.com/2010/11/download-airprint-installer-for-windows-7-xp-vista/
It works great from my iPad 2 and with both of my non-AirPrint printers. For Mac, do a search on jaxov.com for AirPrint to find the right link.

  • Why do I have mysterious cellular data usage (Verizon) every 6 hours on all 3 of my iphone 5's?

I have recently uncovered mysterious cellular usage on three different iPhones. I am a Verizon customer and discovered this by examining the cellular data use logs. What I found are a long series of mysterious data usage logs. I have visited the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store 3 times now to log notes and discuss the issue. It is being escalated.
    The characterstics are as follows:
All my family phones have the appropriate IOS and hardware updates (verified by the GeniusBar at my local Apple Store).
This is occuring across three phones, which happen to all be iphone 5. Two are 5 and the other a new 5s. We do have one iphone 4 in the family but the issue (so far as I can tell), is not happening on it.
One iphone 5 has IOS 7, the other IOS 6. The new 5s has of course IOS 7.
Mysterious data use happens even while connected to wifi.
Each mysterious data use log entry is exactly 6 hours apart. For example: 2:18 AM, 8:18 AM, 2:18 PM, 8:18 PM, 2:18 AM ... etc. It cycles AM and PM, same times, for a day to many days until some condition causes it to change (evolve).
The times evolve. One day it could be cycling through at one time series, then it changes to another time sequence and continues until the next condition.
The data usage is anywhere from a few K to many MB. The largest I've seen is over 100 MB.
The logs clearly show these usages are not due to human interaction. It is a program.
If cellular connection is used frequently (by the owner), the pattern is hard to pick out. Luckily, my family member is very good about only using wifi whenever possible, so these mysterious use patterns are easy to pick out.
Verizon allows access to 90 days worth of data logs, so I downloaded and analyzed them. This has been happening for at least 90 days. I have found 298 instances of mysterious use out of 500 total connections to cellular. A total of 3.5 GB of mysterious cellular data has been recorded as used in that 90 days by this phone alone. Only .6 GB of the total cellular data use is legitimate, meaning by the person.
This issue is occuring across three different phones. Two are iPhone 5, and the third is a recently purchased iPhone 5s. The 5s I have not touched beyone the basic startup. I have left it alone on a desk for 3 days, and looking at the logs, the mysterious data use in the same pattern is occuring.
So ... I am speaking to both sides, Verizon and Apple to get answers. Verizon puts their wall up at data usage. It doesn't matter how it is being used, you simply need to pay for it. Yes, the evidence I have gathered is getting closer to someting on Verizon's end.
Before pressing in that direction, I am hoping someone reading this may recognize this issue as a possible iPhone 5 issue ... OR ... you, right now, go look at your data usage logs available through your carrier's web account, and see if you can pick out a pattern of mysterious use. Look especially at the early morning instances when you are most likely sleeping.
I am hoping this is a simple issue that has a quick resolution. I'm looking for the "ooohhh, I see that now ..." But I am starting to think this might be much bigger, but the fact is, most customers rarely or never look at their data usage details, much less discover mysterious use patterns.
The final interesting (maybe frightening part) thing about all this is that I discovered while talking to Verizon ... they do not divulge which direction the data is going. This goes for any use, mysterious or legitimate. Is cellular data coming to your phone, or leaving it? Is something pulling data from your phone? We know that it is possible to build malware apps, but the catch with my issue is that it is also happening on a brand new iphone 5s with nothing downloaded to it.
    Thanks for your time

Thanks for the replies. It took a while not hearing anything so thought I was alone. I have done many of the suggestions already. The key here is that it occurs on both phones with apps, and phones still packaged in a box.
A Genius Bar supervisor also checked his Verizon data usage log and found the same 6 hour incremental use. Suprisingly, he did not express much intrigue over that. Maybe he did, but did not show it.
I think the 6 hour incremental usage is the main issue here. I spoke with Verizon (again) and they confirmed that all they do is log exactly when the phone connected to the tower and used data. The time it records is when the usage started. I also found out that the time recorded is GMT.
What is using data, unsolicited, every 6 hours?
    Why does it change?
Why does it only happen on the iPhone 5 series and not the 4?
Since no one from Apple seems to be chiming in on this, and I have not received the promised calls from Apple tech support that the Genius Bar staff said I was suppose to receive, it is starting to feel like something is being swept under the rug.
I woke up the other day with another thought ... What application would use such large amounts of data? Well ... music, video, sound and pictures of course. Well ... what would someone set automatically that is of any use to them? hmmm ... video, pictures, sound. Is the iPhone 5 succeptible to snooping? Can an app be buried in the IOS that automatically turns on video and sound recording, and send it somewhere ... every 6 hours? Chilling. I noted that the smallest data usage is during the night when nothing is going on, then it peaks during the day. The Genius Bar tech and I looked at each other when I drew this sine wave graph on the log print outs during an appointment ...

  • A pdf document created in cs5 cannot be printed in duplex on a pc without cs5 or adobe reader pro

    Hi!
there is a "normal" cs5 created pdf document.
the installed cs5  pc -> i can print in duplex on every printer, without cs5 installed duplex printing not possible.
I am searching for a solution to print the pdf document in duplex mode on every printer, but only with the latest freeware version adobe xi 11.0.3.
(If i install adobe cs4 on a pc it is possible to print the document in duplex mode on a hp3525 printer, but duplex is not possible on a ricoh printer for example mpc5502.)
I cant upload the file, because its bigger than 2 mb. (5mb)
Is there anybody out there for help.

Yep, it definitely is a complicated workflow... But I'm not really sure of any other way to get from the 34" wide pattern to the home-sewing version which is split into pages and has alignment marks and whatnot. I'm very much an amateur that has figured it out as I went
I went through the page in the photo pretty thoroughly with the layer panel and I couldn't find any mystery lines... But I did find something interesting; when I click on any of the pattern lines, it shows the whole line of the pattern piece, which extends well past the edge of the artboard. So when I'm printing the poster-sized PDF to 7.5x10 pages, it's keeping all the anchor points of a line even if only a small piece of that is on the actual page.
Does this help? I've included the page in the photo as well http://www.putlocker.com/file/DADB4759DBB860D8
    Thanks again to everyone!
Also, should I be keeping all the files I'm editing as .ai files and then only exporting to PDF for the very final product? I was doing that at first, but then using .pdf for the whole process didn't seem to make any difference.
