Connected to network but no IP address

My problem is that I can connect to my wireless home network but cannot get on the internet because "Airport does not have an IP address". Furthermore when I go to the configuration pane under TCP/IP, there is no IP Address, SUbnet mask, or router numbers listed. When i click "renew DHCP lease" nothing happens. I should say that I was able to connect to the internet this way before, and then I updated OSX and my routers' firmware, and have had problems ever since. I have been caught in the loop of having apple tell me it is Linksys' problem and Linksys tell me it is apples' problem. I have done numerous power-downs of booth the router and the cable modem. I can connect to the internet if I wire it right into the cable modem, so it appears to be a router problem, but I am not sure. Please help, thanks.

Since you did the firware update have you checked all your wireless settings on your router? I have heard on this board some of the firmware updates for linksys have caused problems with Macs. What version firmware and router are you using?
Sounds to me like your IP address is not being sent by the router over the wireless connection. Give us some more info and we might be able to help better.

    Hi,
How do you connect the printer to the XP machine ? If USB, you need to make that machine as a Print server. Please try this:

  • Photosmart C7280 connected to network but no print

Photosmart C7280 connected to network but no print.  Trying to print from a new Mac Book Pro using Snow Leopard.  Both computer and printer are connected to Time Capsule (router), but I'm unable to connect to the printer.  I restarted computer after removing the installed printer, I have restarted printer after verifying it works.  This is a new network setup. TIA Jim

How is the printer connected to the Time Capsule?  Ethernet, wireless or USB?
Did you recently upgrade to Snow Leopard?
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.
    I am employed by HP

  • Hp Officejet Pro 8500 connected to network, but can't be seen from computer or Apple mobile devices

I set up the printer and was able to print from an Apple iPod.  Then I connected the printer directly to one machine via USB to scan a bunch of old picture.
I disconnected the printer USB cable (so it is no longer attached to that computer) and now it is wirelessly connected to my local WiFi.  The test page reports that the connection is good and I have an IP address for the printer.
However, the computer and iPod can not see the printer.  They are all on the same network SSID but the IP address can not be found from the computer.
I have gone through all the diagnostic suggestions in the HP Troubleshooting utility with no joy.
Did connecting the printer directly via a USB port reset something that I need to reconfig?

When you finally get around to looking at my post, never mind.
I reset the factory defaults on the printer and reauthorized my WiFi network.
    Now it is working.

  • Can connect to network but not internet. Please Help!!!!!!!!!

I have a Thinkpad T-60p and have encountered a serious problem; I am unable to connect to the internet. The Thinkpad will recognize and connect to wireless networks but when I go to actually open a webpage it does not open. I spent hours troubleshooting the problem to no avail. My other laptop connects to the internet fine, so I do not think it is an issue with my router or modem. I also went to my neighbors and I was unable to connect to the internet even though I could connect to his network; once again my second computer does not have a problem. I tried what I could in the Thinkvantage wireless software but I am not that familiar with it. When I use the test connection option it just reads, “unable to connect to internet” but I have a strong signal to my network. I then tried a wired connection directly to my cable modem and my neighbors; once again it showed that I have a connection, but still will not connect to the internet. I tried disabling my Firewall and Virus software and still could not connect. I have shutdown, unplugged and reset everything. I still receive the same results. I am not sure what has happened, I have not installed any new software or hardware recently. The computer has been working great up until this morning. I ran my virus software and a free online scan as well, nothing had been detected. I called tech support and they said it was a software issue to either pay $100 for help or post in the forum. The only other option I can think of is a complete systems restore, which I am trying to avoid. Anyone have any suggestions?
    Please Help,
    P.

I will try that when I get home from work, thank you for the advice. However,I did notice that when it attempts to connect it shows the IP Address in the IE window bottom left corner. In the past it would always read connecting to "website name" but since the problem started it shows the IP address instead of the actual name.

  • Can connect to network, but not to internet

I have a wireless network set up with four macs connecting to it. Three of the macs can connect to the network and access the internet.
My Black Macbook can connect to the network, but when I open Safari or any other program that connects to the internet I cannot actually get on the internet. For example, I open safari and after a few minutes it says I am not connected to the internet.
I can connect to my neighbor's unprotected wireless network and have no problem getting on the internet with that connection.
I have tried turning the computer off and on and turning the airport off and on and it does not solve anything. I did not do anything to the compueter, it just started this problem out of the blue.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

Do you have IP address limits ? Say I have 5 IP
    addresses limit.
That is not it. And, I did not change anything before it just stopped working. The strange thing it is only within my wireless network that I can't access the internet. I eventually get the "you are not connected to the internet" screen each time I try to bring up a web page.

  • Connected to network but can't log on

My iBook G4 works great on my home wireless network, but not at my workplace. It connects to the network, has a strong signal, the WEP password is correct, but I can't log on to any sites or do eMail. Any suggestions? Anyone? I'm not exactly a Mac novice, but I've tried everything I know in preferences and Airport settings, with no luck.

I believe you have DHCP addressing turned on on your network settings. Does your mac aquire a normal LAN IP, or does the IP begin with "169"?
In either case, looks like your workplace's wireless router doesn't have DHCP server turned on, or it doesn't allow WAN connections to machines with non-registered MAC addresses. You should check with your workplace's network administrator, or examine the router's settings, if you have administrator access to it.

  • HELP! Airport connects to network but still cannot get online

I have a g3 crt 400mhz running OSX 10.3.9. I added an airport card. It sees networks and connects to mine but when I load Safari or Firefox it errors out saying cannot find server. My main PC can see the mac so I'm not sure what I'm what else to check. do I need to delete .plist files. Can anyone help resolve this issue?
    Thanks

Seems like you are not getting the DNS address or addresses.
apple > system preferences > network
Double click on network connection you are using.
    Pick the TCP/IP tab.
Verify that you have a DNS Server. If you do not, look on your windows machine and see what the net address is. You can also pick using DHCF and still enter you DNS server address.
You can use harddrive > applications > utilities > network utility to diagnose the situation.
    You can ping google.com. Result:

  • Will connect to network but none of the browsers will connect to internet

i have a powerbook g4 12 in. that i have been using on my pcs wireless network for about 6 months with no problems. last week something happened where now i can only connect to the internet through aol or aim. neither internet exp. or safari are able to connect. also, itunes cant connect to the music store. the p.book is connecting to the network and i have tried deleting that network form my powerbook and refinding it. any help is greatly appreciated, as i am a fairly recent mac convert. i am running osx 10.4.3
    powerbook 64   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I am experiencing this exact problem as well. I usually connect at home via a Linksys wifi network. Everything worked fine until about Dec 23, after which I could connect to the network but no web pages. I can see via IP address, print via print server, see the router configuration page, but no domain names will load in any browser. The weird thing is that no other computers on the network (which I administer) have had a problem, and no changes were made to either the powerbook or the network. On a road trip last week, I found I could connect to some other wifi locations (one was airport, one unknown)via dns, but could not on some other previously known good locations.
I have tried manually entering DNS numbers in the airport configuration, but that didn't work.
    Any suggestions?

  • Connected to Network but still unable to use Wi-Fi

I have a 1st gen iphone 8g. I am connected to my home network and sitting right next to my router. The iPhone says it is connected to the network but I have no IP address or anything so there is still the edge symbol at the top of the phone. My friend with a iPod Touch is connected and having no problems, he is sitting right next to me. What gives?

What is the model no of your router ?
Are you unpluging the router from the computer or from the modem ?
If you are having problem going online wirelessly then readjust the wireless settings on your router and then try to connect your network on the laptop..
Go to linksys setup page...change the SSID(network name),channel to 11 and network mode shoul be mixed.
Also check for the security under wireless security and then try to connect to your network on the laptop.

You state that "there is nothing wrong with your home network because you can connect to your laptop and other wifi devices". Interpreted literally, this means only you have a local wireless network. Can your laptop and other wifi devices on your home network access the Internet without problems?
Do you have "reasonable" values for IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router IP, DNS, etc on your iPod Toucg 4G in Settings > WiFi > your home network?
By reasonable I mean do they look the same as the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router IP, DNS, etc on your devices that can access the Internet?

  • Photosmart 5520 connected to network, but keeps disconnecting from server (internet) for ePrint

I just bought a new Photosmart 5520 and love it.  Everything works EXCEPT the HP ePrint service.  My printer is always connected to the network, but when I connect the ePrint, it would work for no more than 10 minutes before I get the message "The printer was unable to connect to the server.  Check the internet connection and try again".  The thing is, the printer is ALWAYS connected to the network, but gets kicked off the internet, rendering ePrint useless.  Anyone know the problem?  My router is a Netgear 7550 and my ISP is Frontier.  Please help

    Hi deskdownstairs,
I see that you're having problems setting up ePrint.  I would try the steps below.
    1. Obtain your printer's IP address
    a. This can be done by pressing the wireless icon on printer.
    2. Enter the printer's IP address in a browser.
    3. Select the network tab at the top of the page.
    4. On the left select networking.
    5. Select Network Address (IP)
    6. Select Manual DNS Server
    a. Manual Preferred DNS should read 8.8.8.8
    b. Alternate DNS Server should read. 8.8.4.4
    7. Select apply you might get a warning just select okay.
Let me know how it goes.

  • Airport Express working, PC connects to network but cannot use internet

I set up my Airport Express wireless network, and all is functioning. My IMac recognizes and uses the network. My PC laptop recognizes the network (excellent signal) and "connects" or indicates that it is connected, but I cannot access the internet. Have tried the power-down and re-booting sequences suggested in other posts. Does the PC just not work on a Mac wireless network?
    Thanks.

Ok, time to use the Ping tool for some additional troubleshooting. We will need to open another command window.
    1. Ping the loopback address to verify that TCP/IP is installed and correctly configured on the local computer. To do this, type the following command: +ping 127.0.0.1+
If the loopback test fails, the IP stack is not responding. This problem may occur if any one or more of the following conditions is true: a. The TCP drivers are corrupted, b) The network adapter is not working, or c. Another service is interfering with IP.
    2. Ping the IP address of the PC to verify that the computer was correctly added to the network. To do this, type the following command: +ping 10.0.1.3+
If the loopback test succeeds but you cannot ping the local IP address, there may be an issue with the routing table or with the network adapter driver.
    3. Ping the IP address of the default gateway to verify that the default gateway is working and that you can communicate with a local host on the local network. To do this, type the following command: +ping 10.0.1.1+
If the ping fails, you may have an issue with the network adapter, the router or gateway device, the cabling, or other connectivity hardware.
    4. Ping the IP address of a remote host to verify that you can communicate through a router. We did this earlier when you attempted to access Google through the web browser using Google's IP address. This time, we will try it via the Ping tool. To do this, type the following command: +ping IP address of remote host+
If the ping fails, the remote host may not be responding, or there may be a problem with the network hardware between computers. To rule out an unresponsive remote host, use Ping again to a different remote host.
    5. Ping the host name of a remote host to verify that you can resolve a remote host name. To do this, type the following command: +ping www.google.com+
Ping uses name resolution to resolve a computer name into an IP address. Therefore, if you successfully ping an IP address but you cannot ping a computer name, there is a problem with host name resolution, not with network connectivity. Verify that DNS server addresses are configured for the computer, either manually in the properties of TCP/IP, or by automatic assignment. If DNS server addresses are listed when you type the ipconfig /all command, try to ping the server addresses to make sure that they are accessible.
If you cannot use Ping successfully at any point, verify the following configurations:
o Make sure that the local computer's IP address is valid and that it is correct on the General tab of the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog box or when it is used with the Ipconfig tool.
o Make sure that a default gateway is configured and that the link between the host and the default gateway is working. For troubleshooting purposes, make sure that only one default gateway is configured.
o Make sure that Internet Protocol security (IPSec) is not turned on. Depending on the IPSec policy, Ping packets may be blocked or may require security.
(Important: If the remote computer that you are pinging is across a high-delay link such as a satellite link, response may take longer. You can use the -w (wait) parameter to specify a longer timeout period than the default timeout of four seconds.)

  • Iphone 4 is connected to network, but no internet.

So I'm surfing last night when suddenly, the airport utility pops up and tells me I should change a setting to "bridge" mode. I change the setting as recommended and then have problems with my airport extreme and airport express connecting to the internet. I eventually had to manually enter the router IP address.
Now, my iPhone will not use the wifi signal. It appears to be connected to the wifi network but only works in 3g mode. I've reset the network settings and tried to manually enter the airport extreme IP address and it's still not work.
Would appreciate any help. Also, is there a support document available that explains how to set up a wireless network with an airport extreme?
    Thanks,
    Mick

I am having the same problem. My iPhone 4 connects to the airport extreme base station and shows a full wifi signal, but has no other functionality, Internet or Remote is not working. Another iPhone or laptop have no problem connecting to the same base station. All the settings in my iPhone seem o.k.
I noted that the DHCP assigned IP address ends with 10.0.0.216 where the other devices IP addresses end in the single digits.
    Thanks for you help.
