Connecting a 2950 Switch to an existing small network

Wondering what's the best way to connect a 2950 Switch to an existing small network. It consists of a few computers on just basic old Linksys switches, but there's only 1 network cable going to the back room, where we have several computers that need to access the internet. I've had a spare 2950 kicking around (RMA from a customer, all ports work but a good bunch of them do not light for some reason) that I'd like to just connect to the existing network line in the back room and have it piggyback essentially so all the machines in the back room can have internet access.
I'm just wondering how I should go about wiring and setting up this switch to work properly, as it's been awhile since I've done this, and the last time I did, it was with the ancient 1900 series switches :).
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello,
basically, it depends on if you have different VLANs implemented in your current network or not. If not, you could just connect the 2950 to one of the Linksys switches, using a crossover cable. The default VLAN for all ports on the 2950 is VLAN 1, so all you have to do is plug your computers into the (working) ports of the 2950, without configurung anything else.

  • Need Help Connecting (2) 2950 switches together, cant see each other

Can anyone please help me get my switches talking?  I am currently in training for entry level certs and can't continue until i get these talking.
I have two 2950 switches connected via port 0/1 on both switches.  (tried both crossover and regular cat5 connections)
I have both ports active and both VLAN 1s active and both ports set to switchport mode trunk
There is no port security enabled.  Both switches have IP's assigned in the respective default VLAN 1.
IP address 10.1.10.10 for switch 1
IP address 10.1.10.11 for switch 2
VTP is set to server on both, ( I tried transparent on both as well )
I cant get these switches to ping each other and or access telnet from each other.  If i connect an outside connection i can telnet individually to each but they wont see each other through ping or CDP Neighbors.
Any ideas?? Please help as i am trying to get my CCENT in a few weeks!
    THANK YOU!

  • Trying to add a Wireless router as a switch on an existing Wired network

    Hi,
I'm having a lot of trouble with my WRT54GS v.2.0
I'm trying to add wireless access to my existing network here at work. I think the main network is using Dlink 40+ node switches.
I've been reading around and I've tried to turn off DHCP on the router, but when my computer tries to find a connection, it times out. I'm not even trying to get the wireless to work, just LAN for now.
The router will get an ip address assigned by the main network, so it's connected, but I can't get the computer through to the main network.
Is there anything I need to be setting up on the computer? Can this even be done?
    Thanks,
    Alex

please make sure that you dont use the internet port on the router, use the local ports...(1,2,3,4)

  • Im having trouble connecting to my old HP 5MP on small network

Im having trouble connecting to my old (but still a great printer) HP 5MP which is connected (be causes it has no ethernet built in) via an Ansante eternet/localtalk bridge to the ethernet network and ti my old G4 Power PC Quicksilver (using 10.4.11). That is shared both by ethernet and (via my vodafone wireless router to my 21" iMac Macbook Pro. When I bought my new iMac and MBP I kept my old G4 so I could still use by SCSI Scanmaker E3+ scanner and my non-USB, non ethernet printer by sharing it from the G4. Worked OK but now not so over either wi-fi or ethernet. I just updated to Lion on the iMac and am on Snow Leopard on the MBP and they say they can't find suitable drivers. My work around has been to print to "Mail pdf" to myself and pick it up on the G4 and print from there direct to the 5MP. But now I can't even connect to the 5MP from there since downloading a software update which was something about enhancements to Airport.
Have tried resetting tie printing system, repairing disc permissions and rebuilding the drive using diskwarrior on t he G4 but now I can't get any mac to see and add the 5MP. My old Epson Photo stylus 1200 works OK on USB but I need my 5MP tp work. Can you help on that please?

Those converters like the AsanteTalk are notorious for not re-acquiring Printers that drop out for any reason.
Get everything else powered up, then cycle off the AsanteTalk, count slowly to 10, then power the AsanteTalk on last.

    end
This config assumes only ports f0/1 - f0/4 will be used on each switch. If that is not the case, you will need to modify the interface configs accordingly. You may want to use descriptions more suited than to your network on the switchports. Also, this config assumes the router is connected to port f0/24 on each switch as well.
The default-gateway for the hosts and the switches is going to be the router IP address for the subnet they are attached to. The hosts/switches attached to f0/0 use 192.168.10.65 as their gateway. The hosts/switches attached to f0/1 use 192.168.10.129 as their gateway.
You do not need to configure a port on the switch as the default-gateway. The default-gateway is an IP address the host/switch uses to direct all traffic from itself out past the router. In fact, if you don't need the switch to talk to devices on the other subnet, you don't even need to configure a default-gateway on the switches (but I would anyway).

  • Connecting to existing wireless network ?

Hi, having a little problem setting up my Time Capsule and connecting it to my existing wireless setup.
I have followed all the onscreen instructions and make it all the way through to the end HOWEVER the Time Capsule will not restart and after a bit I get the following message coming up
"The settings for this Apple wireless device have been successfully updated, but there was a problem re-joining the wireless network or finding the Apple wireless device. You may need to select your network from the AirPort menu and try again"
If I try to rescan for apple wireless product the airport utility is unable to find any - I have to reset the TC and try all over again - now done it 4 times without success
Any advice on where I'm going wrong ?
    Andrew

All sorted, ended up connecting the Time Capsule by the ethernet cable to the BT Home Hub (updated the firmware) then ran through the set up procedure as per connecting the Time Capsule to my "existing wireless network". Used the WEP password as per BT Home Hub, after this was done and setup was complete the TC restarted (no error messages this time round) then disconnected the ethernet cable and selected my BT Home Hub wireless connection that my TC has been added to. Can then use the Airport Wireless Utlility (that came on the CD - best to show in menu bar so don't have to keep going to utilities) and can then open TC to use hard drive etc.
All is well, got there in the end
In my case anyway the setup using ethernet cable worked.
    Hope this helps!

  • Need help choosing how to extend my existing home network to my detached garage?

I have done as much research as possible on this scenario but cannot seem to match the ideal solution with my wants.  Perhaps I simply just do not understand networking as well as I thought I did.  Either way, any helpful information or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Objective:  Extend my wireless network to my detached garage.
My current ISP provider is Time Warner Cable.  I have RoadRunner Extreme, which in my area gives consistent speeds of 50 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload when I am connected via ethernet cable.  When I upgraded to the "Extreme" package i found out I was forced to use their Motorola SB6580 ... its a DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem + wireless router.  I was able to access the Motorola's setup options on the internet and I disabled the wireless function.  This has allowed me to use my Time Capsule as the primary router to provide wireless access on my home network.  I have not had any issues with this setup and is my preferred way to operate.
I have recently moved my home office to the 2nd story of my detached garage and need to extend my wireless network to meet the demands of all my gear.  I have decided to achieve this goal by going with one of the following 3 options:
1.)  enable the wireless function on the motorola modem making it the primary router.  move my time capsule out to the office and use it in bridge mode.  However I do not think I understand bridge mode correctly.  I thought the secondary router (in this case my TC) in bridge mode needed to be connected w/ an ethernet cable at all times to enable this feature?  If I understand similar networking discussions I will lose the ethernet ports with this option?  If this isnt called Bridge mode once i take away the ethernet cable what is it "technically" called?
2.)  buy a 2nd airport extreme base station and create the same type of wireless network extension setup.  The difference here is I would leave my motorola's wireless features disabled, use 2 apple products that speak apples to apples wirelessly and relieve myself of all the headaches involved with a neopolitan setup.  This seems like the obvious choice b/c Apple products are much more user friendly, but I dont want to spend the $200 on a new router if I can achieve a comparable setup by just enabling the equipment I already have.
3.)  use either of these 2 scenarios above & go buy a 150' ethernet cable to join them together.  if this is the case wouldnt a $50 hub suffice on the end of the cable?  I dont necessarily need to have wireless, just reliable connectivity.  I can access the existing wireless network now, but download speeds are not great and things really start to slow down when i have multiple clients connected.  I would rather not have to drill through exterior walls, bury conduit and install learn how to install data wall plates, but i will if this is the pros far out way the cons.
Current modem/router placement:  if standing @ the front door of my 1 story house facing out towards the street my motorola modem/router is in the front right-hand corner of the house.
Distance location of the detached garage office setup:  if standing @ my front door my my work area is in the far back left corner of my property.  it is approx 175' from the router and on the 2nd story of the garage.  I said 150' cable earlier b/c i could relocate the router to a bedroom on the opposite end of the house, however this would eleminate the current wired status of the items connected to it and I would prefer to keep them wired in.
clients connected in the house: (4) apple tv's; Roku; Xbox; Wii; Playstation 3; (2) Lenovo laptops; iPad; (2) Blackberry's; (2) iPhones; iPod touch; (2) wireless netowrk printers; (2) smart tv's ... a handful of these are currently wired into the time capsule now which provides an uninterupted viwing experience for the MLB package.  This of course trumps all opportunity costs involved with moving the router.  There is nothing more frustrating than a screen buffering in the botton of the 9th inning after you've sat there for 3 hours.
clients connected in the office: (2) 27" imacs; apple tv; iPad; network printer; Wii; Harmony Link universal remote; Mac Book Pro ...
I have approx 5TB of digital media that is shared over the network via shared iTunes libraries that I would like to access as well.  iCloud helps with all of our household gadgets as far as acessibility but with all the backups going on simutaneously it also creates headaches when you need the throughput.  I need to do a better job of managing those settings.  nonetheless, I would like some guidance on the best way to extend my current netowrk, suggestions for better scenarios i did not mention and thus am probably not aware of and any networking 101 schooling if it doesnt sound like i understand the way bridge mode/network extension works.  sorry for the long post and thank you for your time & help.

Ethernet beats all other solutions hands down..
A single ethernet connection from wherever is the closest point in the house to the garage office... wins. You can plug a router working as AP and switch or pure switch on to it. Get a cabler in to do the job.. and they can probably figure it out and do the whole job whilst you scatch your head.. yes you will pay for it.. but a cabler knows how to do it. And most likely leave the inside network exactly as it is. Since office is important to be reliable.. there is one and one only reliable method.. ethernet.
If the garage and house are on one electrical circuit.. which is doubtful if it is a separate building then EOP adapters can often work well.. They do not handle earth leakage protection, breakers (rather than fuses) or meters at all well.. but if they are simply all connected to power.. behind the same meter and using old fashioned fuse box.. EOP rated at 200mbps or some now are 500mbps can work reasonably well. Speed about the same as wireless at its best but if it works when installed will generally not change with the weather, moon, and wind direction which wireless is liable to do.
Wireless bridging.. hmm avoid if possible. For reliable connection no.. apple products can do wireless repeater but as you mentioned that turns off the ethernet ports except for the Express.. that is the only unit you can use as a bridge and plug a switch into it. Why Apple why??
So if you want to bridge two points by wireless buy specialised wireless bridge.. that means an AP in the house plugged into the existing network.. and AP unit perhaps on the outside of the garage.. or in windows if you have a window in the house that looks at a window in your office. Look at products from companies like ubiquiti.. they are not too expensive but professional equipment and designed for precisely this kind of work.
Hence the reliability is dramatically better than domestic stuff.. and will require a lot less work to maintain the link.
    Conclusion.. wire it.
Unless you rent the house.. an investment in ethernet cabling install once properly and forget .. beats every other solution even if it costs x5 as other solutions.

  • MacBook wont join existing WiFi network??

My MacBook wont join an existing, working WiFi network - I keep getting "timeout" errors even though I am entering the correct WPA - can anybody please help me figure out why??
    thank you

First contact your ISP.  You need to confirm that the issue is not on their end.
Change your router channel.  Sometimes this is all you will have to do.
Power cycling the router.  Read the router's user manual or contact their tech support for instructions.
    System Preferences/Internet & Network/Network
    Unlock the padlock
    Locations:  Automatic
    Highlight Airport
    Click the Assist Me button
In the popup window click the Diagnostic button.
System Preferences/Network- Unlock padlock.  Highlight Airport.  Network Name-select your name.  Click on the Advanced button.  Airport/Preferred Networks-delete all that is not your network.
Place a check mark next to "Remember networks this computer has joined."  Click the OK button and lock the padlock.  Restart your computer.

    No internet connection (wireless)
Check to see if an extra entry is present in the DNS Tab for your wireless connection (System Preferences/Network/Airport/Advanced/DNS).
Delete all extra entries that you find.
Place a check mark next to "Remember networks this computer has joined."

  • Duplex Mismatch when connecting ip phone with 2950 switch

When I connect my Cisco IP Phone 7960 with 2950 Switch (any access port within voice vlan), I get the message on Port duplex mismatch but the phone works properly.
From my switch the speed setting is 100/Full but from the Phone its Auto.
My Question is when I try to change duplex settings from Phone, it doesn't gives me any option instead only one option available to save so kindly someone tell me the best way to fix this from Phone or do I have to change the duplex from switch to AUTO ?

Thanks but When I connect with my Cisco 2950 Switch, I can see the weird kind of language as per my attachment.
It wasn't yesterday when I first configured from scratch but just seen today.
Switch is working good with Cisco IP phone connected with it.

  • Some 2950 switch ports led turn amber even without cable connection

Hello. Due to a likely NIC problem, after connecting my laptop to a port on the 2950 switch, the led turns amber even after disconnecting the cable.
2 ports on the switch are having this problems. Ideally the led should be off when nothing is connected.
Please, how can I correct this problem without restarting the switch because its in a production environment.
    Eddy

    Hello,
which two switchports are amber? Try toggling the port LED modes by pressing the mode button.
    Have a look at
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps628/products_installation_guide_chapter09186a008007e889.html#xtocid41699
for the different port modes meanings and their respective usage of port LEDs.
It would also be helpful to see the port status from the switch CLI in case the procedure above didn´t solve the problem.
    Hope this helps

  • WRT54GC config to connect a wired-printer on existing wireless network

    Hello everyone,
I hope someone can help me with the following issue :
    - I have an existing wireless network at home, set up with a wireless router/dsl connection
    - I now have been given a wired-printer, and I'd like to connect my printer to the existing wireless network, using a WRT54GC device.
I have been trying for a while, and I believe but can't manage to configure the device do this, and didn't find this in the forum yet.
As anyone already done this successfully ?
    Thank you

What is the make and model of your printer?  What type of connections does it have -- ethernet port?   USB port?  Parallel port?
If your printer has an ethernet port, you can wire it directly to your router.
If your printer has only a USB port, you will need a printer server such as the Linksys WPS54G, WPSM54G.    These devices will allow you to use the printer as a wired or wireless printer.  Both of these devices support USB 1.1 and USB 2.0
I do not recommend the Linksys PSUS4 (wired print server with 4 port switch), because it only supports USB 1.1

  • Airport Express connecting to an existing wired network

    Hello,
I'm trying to connect an Airport Express unit to an existing wired network, can someone please help me to set this up or what I need to do? I originally connected the ethernet cable from the device (airport express) to the switch it was on but it didn't work and the other computers were connecting to that network. Should I setup the Airport Express in Bridge Mode or will i need to fiddle around with the settings a bit?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Daniel

Not sure what the difficulty is here.
All you really need to do is connect the Express to the switch with an Ethernet connection, open AirPort Utility on your Windows machine, and click Continue to get the process going.
If you need to download and install AirPort Utility for the PC, it is here:
    AirPort Utility 5.6.1 for Windows
Select the "Create a wireless network" option, assign a device name and password to the Express, then assign a wireless network name and password for the wireless network that you want the Express to provide.
Select the Bridge Mode option when it appears and click Update to save the settings.
The Express will restart and you should have a green light on the Express.
Then, log on to that wireless network from the iPad.

  • OLE DB or ODBC error: [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied

    Hi,
I have one client and one server.  In both hosts I created an OS-user named User1.
The user have been given various role under the prefix SQLServer2005.
The default instance of SQL Server and instance (background-process) of
Analysis Service are also run under User1.
I connected via Management Studio to Analysis Service directly in the
server.  I set the permission to access Analysis Service to Everyone.
This means everyone should be able to use Analysis Service.  I have set
ODBC data source to the server.  Testing was successful.
I created a project to create a cube.  The tables are fairly small (total 300 MB, biggest one 290).
On project setting (created at client) I set the server host as
deployment target. I managed to deploy project when all I have are Data
    Source and Data Source Views.
But on deployment I always failed.   The errors remain the same, begins with
OLE DB error: OLE DB or ODBC error: [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.; 08001.
I have tried 4 combinations of Impersonation :
    (A) Use a specific username and password
      * in which I supply User1 and the password of User1
    (B) Use the service account
    (C) Use the credentials of the current user
    (D) Default
Why is this? The server does certainly exist.  I think the error message is wrong.
I have seen 3 posting that seems related.  One of them say the solution is giving the right impersonation, but gave no detail.  About the privilege, User1 are granted the role of
    SQLServer2005MSOLAP.  What is the solution?
    Thank you,
    Bernaridho

I just had this problem and solved it by creating an alias in SQL Server Configuration Manager, as below:
Scenario: My SQL server is accessible from the internet under my.domain.com, and from itself at ServerName. But the local network can't see itself through the router at my.domain.com, so the deployed project is unable to process the cube, since that would
require Analysis Services to be able to see the SQL Server at my.domain.com, which it can't do.
So I changed the server in my project from my.domain.com to ServerName, and I created a local alias to ServerName in SQL Server Configuration Manager, under SQL Native Client 11.0 Configuration, Aliases. In my case, I pointed it to localhost port 1333, and
used SSH -L 1333:my.domain.com:1433, but I could have pointed the alias directly to the server, just as well. (Verifying... yes, that worked too, so you can forget SSH if you have no interest in it.)

  • Can't open console to 2950 switch

    Howdy all,
I'm after inheriting a cisco 2950 switch in my new job and I do not know the enable password for it. I went about following the "password recovery procedure" but am getting nowhere.
    http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/474/pswdrec_2500.html
I have tried connecting to the switch after powering it up but cannot open a session over the console port. I've tried using both COM ports on my laptop with all the variations of the flow control setting but no joy.
I took a look at an old config file that was saved on the network for the switch and found this at the end:
    LINE CON 0
    TRANSPORT INPUT NONE
Is this stopping me from completing the password reset when the switch is booting up??? All advice welcomed.
    Regards,
    PaddyIrishman

HI Paddy, [Pls Rate if HELPS]
"Transport Input None" command will prevent you from accessing the Device.
Refer link below for CISCO 2950 Swtich Password Recovery Procedure Document:
    http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/474/pswdrec_2900xl.html
Refer step by step procedure (quick ref):
    1. Unplug the power cable
    2. Hold down the mode button while replugging the power cable
    3. Type flash_init over the console
    4. Type load_helper
    5. Type Dir flash:
//make sure to type the semi-colons
    6. Type rename flash:config.tdt flash:config.old
//the password is contained in the config.txt fil.e
    7. Type boot
    //this reboots the system
    8. Type n to skip the initial setup config
    9. Type enable
//this takes you to the enable mode
    10. Type rename flash:config.old flash:config.txt
    11. Save config.txt to system
    #copy flash:config.txt system:running-config
    12. Enter config mode and change the password
    #cofig t
    #no enable secret
//this applies only if the enable secret password was created
    13. Finally write the changes to memory
    #write memory
    PLS RATE if HELPS

  • Catalyst 2950 Switch flash_init error

    Hi Everyone,
I'm new to Cisco products and have a small home lab set up. I have a Catalyst 2950 switch that I would like to restore to factory defaults. Here is the issue I'm having and can't figure out.
I pull the power, telnet into the console port, hold the mode button and restore power. The boot loader (Version 12.1(11r) starts and says the usual message the system was interrupted prior to flash initialization (Paraphrasing here)
I get to the switch: command line, enter flash_init. Flash states it initialized and then all I get is a < with an underscore under it prompt. Anything I try to type comes up as bizarre characters and I can not get back to a switch: prompt unless I reboot the switch manually. Unsure of what to do here.
    Thanks in advance!
    -Matt

    Hi mattymattlynch
Check the workaround on the following documents:
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/switches/catalyst-2950-series-switches/41845-192.html
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst2950/software/release/12-1_22_ea11x/configuration/guide/scg/swtrbl.html
If no luck , the flash might be corrupted and requires a replacement.
    Hope this helps
