Connecting two Cisco 2950 switches to a 2600 router

Hello,
I'm trying to have two LANs connected to 2950 switch each, connect to a 2600 router and have the two LANs communicate with each other...i can't seem to get it working...any help...thanks

LAN 2 192.168.12.1/21
Thanks again

This config assumes only ports f0/1 - f0/4 will be used on each switch. If that is not the case, you will need to modify the interface configs accordingly. You may want to use descriptions more suited than to your network on the switchports. Also, this config assumes the router is connected to port f0/24 on each switch as well.
The default-gateway for the hosts and the switches is going to be the router IP address for the subnet they are attached to. The hosts/switches attached to f0/0 use 192.168.10.65 as their gateway. The hosts/switches attached to f0/1 use 192.168.10.129 as their gateway.
You do not need to configure a port on the switch as the default-gateway. The default-gateway is an IP address the host/switch uses to direct all traffic from itself out past the router. In fact, if you don't need the switch to talk to devices on the other subnet, you don't even need to configure a default-gateway on the switches (but I would anyway).

  • Apple wired Dot1X - on Cisco 2950 switches

Hi, I have an issue with Apple desktop computers running 10.7 and 10.8 MacOS.
The problem is that we have only 2950 switches and we are very limited with what we can do on them, so we wanted basic DOT1X user authentication and VLAN placement. Those two are working great, except when user logs off, Mac stops sending DOT1X and port becomes unauthenticated. We alleviated that issue by using guest-vlan for failed dot1x authentications, but now we have a problem that once user logs in, there is no session change on 2950 and it doesn’t even try to authenticate user until we bounce the port.
Is there any way to fix this, on Cisco switch or Mac computer? One of the things that crossed my mind is bouncing port on Mac PC using some kind of logon script?
Has anyone else had this issue and was able to solve it?
    Thanks.

    Hello Align,
Cisco 2950 switch with 12.1(9) supports 802.1 x authentications. As you are saying that you already configured 802.1x authentication and its working fine. I think there is problem with your MAC OS configuration. Please follow the below link to configure 802.1x on Apple.

  • Dot1x Issue on Cisco 2950 Switch

    Hi,
I have a Cisco 2950 switch running with c2950-i6q4l2-mz.121-22.EA6.bin image. When i configure a Dot1x Port Control Auto on each interface the utilization on the Cisco 2950 goes high. The moment i remove Dot1x Port Control Auto command on every interface utilization comes to normal.
Please let me know if any idea on this why the switch is behavior like this....
    Thanks & Regds,

Most likely you are hitting a bug although I did not find anything in the bug toolkit that could resemblance this.
What process is stealing all your cpu? Please do a `show proc cpu` for me. I would start by grabbing the EA13 release and try the same with that to see if you experience the same issues.

  • Connecting two cisco ESW 500 series switches.

    Hi Experts,
I have a basic knowledge of network and need some help.
I have two cisco ESW 500 series switches and i want to connect them together.
Q1 # Which type of cable i should use to connect these two switches CrossOver or fiber...What is the advantage of using Fiber over CrossOver. ?
Q2 # What are the marked ports in the image used for...???

    tech spec,
Traditionally you would use crossover to connect switches. Most modern network devices have Auto-MDIX which allows the device to connect using either crossover or straight through.
The ports on the right can be used for uplink or as regular network ports. On the 10/100 versions the ports on the right are usually Gigabit, thus making them more suitable for uplink to another switch, etc.

  • Connecting two linksys gigabit switches

    Hi,
I just bought a slm2024 (24 port managed Gigbabit switch) to replace an older 100Mbit switch. The old switch had PCs and other switches connected to it. The other switches are EG005W ver. 3. (linksys workgroup 5 port gigabit switches)
With the new slm2024 switch, the PCs have no problems connecting. The problem is the EG005W switches. The port on the slm2024 which connects both switches is dark (the LED is dark - no lights at all). Any thoughts on what is the problem? Do I need to configure something special on the slm2024?
I do have an older 100Mbit switch and if I connect it to the new slm2024 switch, the lights are on and traffic is flowing. It is just the EG005W that does not seem to like being plugged in the gigabit switch. It used to work when plugged in the older 100Mbit switch.
Oh and if I try to plug in two EG005W together, I get the same problem. PCs connected to the 2nd switch cannot communicate out either.
I understand that in the past cross-over cables where needed to connect switches but I thought that new switches no longer require this (even my old 100Mbit switch did not require this for the EG005W to work through it).
Any thoughts on how to fix or debug this?
    Thanks for any suggestions.

there shouldn't be any configuration needed on the ports of the SLM2024 because they are already "smart ports"
this could be a possible problem between these 2 devices -- have heard of similar problem before bet. a switch and hub but i have forgotten their model numbers -- you would think that since they came from the same manufacturer you will have an easier set-up but sometimes that's just not the case

  • Cisco prime 2.1 not showing wired clients connected to Cisco 3850 switches

    Hello All,
I have around 80 Cisco 3850 switches at a customer network and they are using prime infrastructure 2.1.2 to manage these devices. Most of the features are working fine except that the prime does not show the wired clients connected to the switches. The wireless clients are shown properly but not the wired clients. Their core switches are nexus 7k. The SNMP configuration on the switches is as follows.
    snmp-server group xxxx  v3 priv write xxxx-VIEW-WR
    snmp-server view xxx-VIEW-WR mib-2 included
    snmp-server trap-source Vlan100
    snmp-server host x.x.x.x version 3 priv testuser
Please help me to resolve this issue.
    Shabeeb

I managed to get the end hosts connected in 3850 switches with the use of snmp context command. But now the issue is that prime is showing only the mac address of the device , not the IP address.
Is there anyway to resolve this issue?

  • VLAN between two Cisco 300 switches

Is it possible to share a VLAN between two Cisco 300 series switches?

Make sure that your port 27 is NOT configured as an access port - it should be a trunk (that's the default). I believe the setting is under VLAN Management > Interface settings.
Also ensure you are setup to tag frames (under the "Port to VLAN" settings).

  • What is the default tx-ring-limit on Cisco 2950 switches?

    Hello,
we are working on a project involving changing different buffer/queue sizes and we are trying to discover the default tx-ring-limit size on Cisco 2950. Do you know a command that will show us this value?
    Thank you in advance.

I think that the default tx-ring-limit is probably 128. I couldn't find this value on a specific document regarding the 2950, but i found it on other cisco devices, so my guess is that it could be the default also for 2950 (although it's a bit old:) )

  • Connect two SRW 2024 switches together

I have been doing some research on this and I am getting mixed results.  I have 5 VLANS setup, not including the native VLAN 1.  VLAN1 has port 1 as untaggged and set to trunk.  The rest excluded.  VLAN 100 has port 1 set to trunk and tagged, and 9-12 untagged.  VLAN 200 has port 1 trunk and tagged and 2-6 untagged.  VLAN500 port 1 tagged/trunk, and ports 14-20 untagged.  VLAN 600 has port one as trunk but excluded and 21-24 as untagged. VLAN 700 has port 1 as tagged and 7 and 8 as untagged.  All I did was buy an exact duplicate of the switch, another srw2024 and I want to connect it to this existing switch.  Could someone tell me how I can do this two ways:  one way to expand the VLAN's to the second switch and one with just adding the second switch and be able to create new VLAN's?  Any help is greatly appreciated!  Thanks =)
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Yes; however, the number of VLAN port members doesn’t necessarily be the same. You may have more LAN ports on the other switch that will be a member of a certain VLAN ID. The most important configuration is the membership of the “trunk” port to the VLANs you want to pass through to the other switch.

Q1. How Can i set Bandwidth on an interface ?
Q1. How Can i set Priority on an interface ?

    Hello,
are you referring to Layer 2 or Layer 3 ports ?
For Layer 2 ports, you could use the 'storm-control' interface command to limit unicast, multicast, or broadcast traffic as a percentage of total bandwidth. For CoS priority, the 'switchport priority' command could be used.
For Layer 3 ports you have more options, such as CBWFQ and CAR. What exactly do you need to configure ?

  • How to connect two computers in one room to a router in a 2nd room?

I have a Linksys modem and WRT54G router in an entry panel in my laundry room.  I have newer house with cat5 cables connected from the router to computers in various rooms.  In the room that we use as an office, we want to connect a 2nd computer to the network, but there is only one ethernet jack on the wall and that jack is used for the first (existing) computer in the room.   I don't want to use a wireless connection for 2nd computer.
How do I connect the 2nd computer to network?  Do I connect both computers to a hub in the office and connect the hub to the ethernet jact on the wall?

    castor wrote:
    HI...
You can definitely connect a HUB or a switch to the Wall jack and then connect the computer to the other ethernet port of the device. Make sure that the cable from the router is connected to any one of the ethernet port and not the uplink port.
"Make sure that the cable from the router is connected to any one of the ethernet port and not the uplink port."
So just for my clarification "You can definitely connect a HUB or a switch to the Wall jack"
Witch port should one use? Till now I thought one should connect the wall jack to the uplink port and the 2 computers to the other ports on the switch or hub?

  • Cisco 2950 MT-RJ ports - Connect two switches?

    Hi Everyone,
I'm wondering if I can connect two cisco 2950s together via the two MT-RJ ports they have?
Basically, I'd like the fibre ports to be the trunk between the two switches if possible
    I have two of these:
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Yes, that is possible. As long as your fiber patch cable is good there should be no issues.

  • Cisco 2950 Gigabit interface trunking

This is the small part of the network design that i want to seek advice from the forum .
++ we have two cisco 2950 switch
    switch1 ==gigabit trunk == switch2 .
we want trunking to enable between these two two switches by using there gigabit ethernet interface ie
switch 1 interface GigabitEthernet0/1 is connected to switch 2 interface GigabitEthernet0/1 and switch 1 interface GigabitEthernet0/2 is connected to switch 2 interface GigabitEthernet0/2.
i need advice in following areas
++ what cable do we need to connect these switches (i guess cross over cable will do )
++ do we have configuration on the tech tip page
    for achieving the same ?

    Hello,
for the trunk connection you need a four twisted-pair crossover cable:
Figure B-11 Four Twisted-Pair Crossover Cable Schematics for 10/100/1000 and 1000BASE-T Ports
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/products/hw/switches/ps628/products_installation_guide_chapter09186a0080346679.html#wp1020386
You can either configure 802.1Q or an ISL trunks between your switches. For 802.1Q the configuration would look like this:
    Switch1
    interface GigabitEthernet0/1
    switchport trunk encapuslation dot1q
    switchport mode trunk
    interface GigabitEthernet0/2
    switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
    switchport mode trunk
    Switch2
    interface GigabitEthernet0/1
    switchport trunk encapuslation dot1q
    switchport mode trunk
    interface GigabitEthernet0/2
    switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
    switchport mode trunk
And for ISL encapsulation, the configuration would look like this:
    Switch1
    interface GigabitEthernet0/1
    switchport trunk encapuslation isl
    switchport mode trunk
    interface GigabitEthernet0/2
    switchport trunk encapsulation isl
    switchport mode trunk
    Switch2
    interface GigabitEthernet0/1
    switchport trunk encapuslation isl
    switchport mode trunk
    interface GigabitEthernet0/2
    switchport trunk encapsulation isl
    switchport mode trunk
You could also configure a GigaChannel to bind both interfaces into one logical link, for better throughput. For 802.1Q:
    Switch1
    interface Port-channel1
    switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
    switchport mode trunk
    interface GigabitEthernet0/1
    switchport trunk encapuslation dot1q
    switchport mode trunk
    channel-group 1 mode on
    interface GigabitEthernet0/2
    switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
    switchport mode trunk
    channel-group 1 mode on
    Switch2
    interface Port-channel1
    switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
    switchport mode trunk
    interface GigabitEthernet0/1
    switchport trunk encapuslation dot1q
    switchport mode trunk
    channel-group 1 mode on
    interface GigabitEthernet0/2
    switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
    switchport mode trunk
    channel-group 1 mode on
    And for ISL:
    Switch1
    interface Port-channel1
    switchport trunk encapsulation isl
    switchport mode trunk
    interface GigabitEthernet0/1
    switchport trunk encapuslation isl
    switchport mode trunk
    channel-group 1 mode on
    interface GigabitEthernet0/2
    switchport trunk encapsulation isl
    switchport mode trunk
    channel-group 1 mode on
    Switch2
    interface Port-channel1
    switchport trunk encapsulation isl
    switchport mode trunk
    interface GigabitEthernet0/1
    switchport trunk encapuslation isl
    switchport mode trunk
    channel-group 1 mode on
    interface GigabitEthernet0/2
    switchport trunk encapsulation isl
    switchport mode trunk
    channel-group 1 mode on

  • Duplex Mismatch when connecting ip phone with 2950 switch

When I connect my Cisco IP Phone 7960 with 2950 Switch (any access port within voice vlan), I get the message on Port duplex mismatch but the phone works properly.
From my switch the speed setting is 100/Full but from the Phone its Auto.
My Question is when I try to change duplex settings from Phone, it doesn't gives me any option instead only one option available to save so kindly someone tell me the best way to fix this from Phone or do I have to change the duplex from switch to AUTO ?

Thanks but When I connect with my Cisco 2950 Switch, I can see the weird kind of language as per my attachment.
It wasn't yesterday when I first configured from scratch but just seen today.
Switch is working good with Cisco IP phone connected with it.
