Connecting canon camera

Since I dont' have my installation CD for my Canon camera, I was told to get a card reader in order to upload my photos from my camera. However, does it work on Apple? What kind of card reader should I get?
Also, how come Apple can't open .wmv file and .rar files? It's annoying. Will it solve the problem if I install Windows on Apple? Where can I get Windows software for free?

Haven't you tried using the USB camera that comes with your camera and just plug it in to see if the Mac recognizes it?

You can't expect any operating system to do everything initially especially with proprietary formats. There are free programs that deal with these files though.
For your WMV files (which Microsoft controls I might add): Flip4Mac (http://www.flip4mac.com/wmv_download.htm)
For your RAR files: StuffitExpander (http://www.stuffit.com/mac/expander/)

  • New problem connecting Canon 20D camera to OS 10.4.3

I've searched these forums and others but can find nothing about this. Hopefully someone here can help.
I've been connecting my 20D to my 15" PowerBook 2005 (first running OS 10.3.9 and now running OS 10.4.3) since I got the camera two months ago. I have been using EOS Viewer Utility and the supplied USB cable and everything has been fine so far... The camera has appeared as "EOS 20D" in the left sidebar of EVU and I have been able to offload images and connect to EOS Capture.
Yesterday, all of a sudden (that is, I haven't installed anything new on my PowerBook), the camera stopped being recognized properly by EVU. When I connect the camera as I always have, "EOS 20D 1" or "EOS 20D 2" appears in the left sidebar of EVU and, when I click on it to view what's on the camera, I get the message "Cannot detect Camera. Check connection to Camera, then retry." I have un-plugged and re-plugged everything. I have tried an alternate USB cable (from my SD100). I have trashed preference files ("EOS CameraCom Pref" and "CanonEOSViewerUtility Pref"). I have removed and re-installed the EOS Viewer Utility (and all software from the CD). I have re-formatted the CF card as well as tried another CF card that hasn't been in the camera before. (The CF card still acts perfectly fine when used in a card reader.) I have updated the camera firmware to 2.0.3. I have even Repaired Disk Permissions on the PowerBook. Alas, none of this has fixed it.
I tried connecting to another identical computer with a fresh installation of EVU. That computer had never been connected to my 20D... same results.
I tried connecting to an older PowerBook (that had never been connected to my 20D) running 10.3.9 ... and everything was fine & back to normal. Usually this would lead me to believe that OS 10.4.3 was the problem, but I have been connecting to it without issue for several weeks.
Has anyone seen or heard of this before? (especially the "EOS 20D 1" and "EOS 20D 2" showing up in EVU.)
Does anyone know how to get the camera recognized properly again by EVU and EOS Capture?
Might there be a file or setting somewhere in 10.4(.3) that is not "seeing" the camera properly all of a sudden?
Despite years of Mac troubleshooting experience, I am stumped on this one and would love to get things back to normal.
In the meantime, I am able to offload JPEG's and RAW files using Image Capture, but I find EVU too handy to give up for some things. Also, EOS Capture is lost to me until I can get this figured out.
Any thoughts would be most appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hi AJ, Thanks for the thoughts. Here's the results...
    New account:
I made a new account and tried the camera there. Got the exact same results. Good idea though, as that does sometimes clear things up or at least pinpoint problems.
    iPhoto:
I removed it from our PB's long ago. Found its filing system too troublesome early on and never looked back. I could install it if it would get the camera recognized by EVU again, but I'd be surprised if that changed anything. (I'm guessing iPhoto recognizes cameras the same wat Image Capture does, and IC still works fine, so I'm not sure I'd discover anything new.)
    EOS 20D 1 vs EOS 20D 2:
Nope, the camera doesn't have any internal memory. Only the CF card is used to hold images. I'm not sure where EVU gets the 1 and 2 from, but I'm thinking that if I knew that I could trash that pref and the problem might be solved. (Mind you, I've trashed all recognizable prefs so far. I'm wondering if Canon's EVU creates some very cryptically named file to store its camera prefs...?)
Waiting time & number of pics on card:
I don't need to wait at all, since the camera is on when I start Canon's EOS Viewer Utility, as recommended by the manual. The camera is listed when the app's main window appears. (I have tried starting EVU first, then the camera, and it takes about 3 seconds for the "EOS 20D 1" to appear, still inaccessible.)
I've tested the camera-computer connection with anywhere from 0 to about 45 images on the camera's card. I've never had any lag with either my SD100 or my 20D, no matter what app I use to access them or the number of pics on either camera's card.
    Any other thoughts anyone?

  • Trying to connect Canon MD101 camera to MacBook Pro

I am trying to connect my Canon MD101 video camera to my MacBook Pro so I can get the videos off it.
I have connected the camera and laptop using a 9-Pin to 4-Pin firewire cable: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001IUM20C/ref=pe_385721_37038051_pe_217191_31005151_ 3p_M3T1_dp_1
You can see the connections in the 2 pictures below.
When I plug in the cable the camera does not appear in Finder or on the Desktop or anywhere that I've looked. I could succesfully connect the camera to my old laptop using a 4-Pin to 4-Pin firewire cable, but my MacBook Pro doesn't have a 4-Pin port.
Does anyone know how I can connect my camera to my MacBook Pro? Am I using the wrong cable or is it just not possible to make this connection? The camera is quite old, bought it in 2007. Any help is appreciated!!
    Rob.

Hi Bob. Yes, I did get it to work and I can now get my videos off the camera and onto my laptop. I use the same cable that i was talking about in the original post.
The camera has to be plugged in to the laptop and turned on. I have my camera set to 'Play' (The power switch on the camera gives a choice of 'Play', 'Off' or 'Camera'). I then open iMovie. In iMovie I go to 'File' then 'Import Media'. A window called 'Import' should open up and then you just click the 'Import' button in the bottom right. I hope this works for you. It's pretty simple, I was just surprised that the camera doesn't appear in Finder.

  • Trouble Connecting Canon, Sony Cameras

I am a teacher and I have a new batch of G5 iMacs for my Yearbook class. Unfortunately, I am having a problem with Mac OS recognizing the cameras when they are connected. Usually a camera will show up like a disk icon when attached via USB and powered on. This works fine with my Casio Exilim camera.
However, I have some students with Canon and Sony cameras that will not be recognized by Mac. I figured out that some cameras will be recognized only when you open iPhoto and the camera appears in the Source window.
I am a long-time Mac user and I love Mac, but I hate iPhoto. We use Photoshop to correct photos and having to use the iPhoto interface for importing/archiving is a pain. I just want the students to open the camera, copy their jpegs onto the hard drive and edit in Photoshop.
Am I missing a Setting or Preference that is making it so that my camera will only be seen in iPhoto? Why would this be the case for some cameras, and not others? Thank you for your feedback.

    Jason:
Canon cameras never have been able to mount on the desktop as removable media. As already been mentioned, if iPhoto won't recognize it you can use Image Capture to manually view and upload the photos to the desktop and then go from the desktop into iPhoto. Image Capture will allow the students to upload only those photos the want.
As far as the Sony, check in the various menus on the camera for the option that PhillyPhan mentioned. In some Sony cameras it's under Setup 2 menu and the item is USB Connect and the options are Normal, PTP and PictBridge. I think you want to choose PTP.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • New problem connecting Canon 20D camera to OS 10.4.7

Hi, I'm new to the forum but have foud you having looking for an answer to a problem i have had. re: New problem connecting Canon 20D camera to OS 10.4.3 and the answers listed for it the problem has been occuring on my 3 Macs, all running OS 10.4.7 and firmware on the new 20D at 2.0.3. The camera would not connect to the Mac with any software.
Canon told me to make sure that the connection mode is set to normal (which didn't work) but today they tell me to change it to P2P and iPhoto recognised the camera and downloaded. Still can't use the canon software (camera not connected / recognised) but they have said that a senior technition will be contacting me so i will keep you up to date.
    All the best.

I have an update from my telephone conversation earlier today:
    Dear Customer,
Thank you for your recent enquiry regarding your Canon product.
From the information supplied it would appear that the update in operating system is the cause of the problem. We can confirm that Canon are currently investigating compatibility with the recent update of the Apple Macintosh operating sytem OSX 10.4.7. If any software updates are neccessary they will become available from :
    http://software.canon-europe.com/
    I'll update with more.....

  • Installed my new canon camera n trashed my old canon software but when i connected camera its telling me that connection software for another canon is running n software can't be launched

Installed a canon A3400IS camera to my OS X Yosemite computer n trashed my old canon camera software but the when i connect the camera its telling me that the connection software for another canon is running and that the software cannot be launched

Take a look at the specs of your camera:
    http://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/cameras/powershot-camera-specials/powe rshot-sx500-is
First, get yourself a decent brand (I have Verbatim and Sandisk) absolute minimum 4 GB, better 8 or 16 GB SDHC card, class 6 or higher (that number is in a little circle on the front of the card and means it can handle faster read/write speeds).
Presumably, you are shooting in 1280 HD which will result in MUCH bigger file sizes. My camera does both 1280 HD as well as 1920 HD and in the latter, a 3 minute video easily uses up to 3 GB.
Once you get a larger capacity card, you will be able to shoot up to 20 - 30 minute videos (depending on the card capacity - they have maximums). When I shoot video, I only use 16 and 32 GB cards. You might also call Canon and ask them two questions (or email their support, they're pretty good at answering):
    1. What is the maximum card capacity the SX500 can handle (cards can go to 32, 64, 128 GB)?
    2. What is the highest class number the camera can handle? (I said to get at least class 6; many more now come in class 10, and then there is a brand new version called UHS-1). If you get a card that is too fast, it will result in lower quality videos/pics. When I got my SX40, I called Canon and got their recommendations on cards because I was not happy with the quality output of the cards I had.
And, lastly, make sure that, if you are using a card reader, it is fast enough to read whatever card class you will be using - that is important as that determines how long it takes it transfer the stuff to the computer. Also, I'd suggest using a USB card reader rather than attaching the camera - it makes it so much easier to handle and saves the camera battery.
Start with these suggestions and you'll find that you'll be happy with the output of your camera.

  • I can't connect my camera to my Mac tower - final cut doesn't recognize the connection.

I have a Canon AH X1 video camera which uses the older 6 pin firewire - I have a 6 pin to 9 pin adapter, but when I connect the camera and go to Capture and Log, it doesn't recognize the camera is connected.  Even when I click NOW, it does nothing.  My camera output settings have been set by the manual for this type of connection, HD and downgrade OFF, or something like that (don't have the camera in front of me this moment).  Any ideas?
    Thank you!

    Thanks for the quick response!  I have a smokin' Mac Tower - 2 x 2.4 GHz Quad-Core, 10GB RAM, Mac OS 10.6.7.
I am running 6 pin firewire using a 9 pin adapter.  I have one internal hard drive - 999GB, formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) - 914G are free.
Camera Settings - Playback STD - Comp out 1080i/480i
    HD Down Conversion - OFF
When I start up Final Cut Pro, it says
External A/V Unable to locate the following external devices:
    Apple FireWire NTSC (720 x 480)
Your system configuration may have changed, or your deck/camera may be disconnected or turned off.
Please check your connections and click "Check Again" , or click "Continue" to set external device detection to None.
Then, when I go to Log and Capture, I get:
Unable to initialize video deck.  You may still log offline clips or use Capture Now.
Beneath that, "Initializing Device Control..." stays up and frozen.
THEN, if I click OK and Capture NOW, I get a quick flash of a screen that disappears, and nothing happens.
    Thanks in advance...

  • Using an external hard drive to connect the camera to the Mac Book Pro

I am about three weeks away from a 9 to 4 pin firewire cable. In the meantime, I am logging and capturing from my Canon AX HI through my external hard drive. I am not super amazed at the quality of the image, it's noisy.
I am using HDV tapes, and I don't beleive the lighting should be causing the issue.
Does anyone know if using the external hard drive to connect the camera to my Mac Book Pro is compromising the quality of the image? Can I expect a beautiful strong image on a lap top?
    Thanks for any help.

There is ZERO quality loss when you capture via firewire. It is a digital transfer of files...that's it. The issue you have is that you are trying to judge the quality of your image based on what you see with your computer monitors, and that is simply the LAST thing you should be doing.
And since this is HDV, the only way to monitor that is with an HD card or I/O device, and an HD monitor or TV. Like the Matrox MXO2 mini or AJA I/O Express mini and HDTV.

  • My new MAC 10.10.3 will not recognize my Canon cameras or my Kodak camera.  Help from the Geek Squad was useless.

My iMAC 10.10.3 Yosemite will not recognize any of my two Canon cameras or my Kodak camera.  What's the solution?

Can you temporarily connect some other USB device to verify that your PowerBook's USB ports are in working order? Do you have another computer to which your camera can be connected to verify that a working USB connection is being made from the camera?
If we can somehow eliminate a hardware issue, then you can focus on software. Have you tried creating a new admin user account? If the new account recognizes your camera, it would narrow the problem down to something within your regular user account.

  • Aperture doesn't see iPhone 4; sees Canon camera but not photos

From the App Store, I recently downloaded and installed Aperture 3 on my 2008 MacBook Pro with OS 10.6.6. In the preferences for Aperture, Image Capture, and iPhoto, I set Aperture to open automatically when I connect a camera. When I connect my iPhone 4, Aperture doesn't open, nor does the iPhone appear in Aperture when I open Aperture manually. When I connect my Canon Powershot A710IS, Aperture does open, and the camera does appear, but the photos that are on the camera don't appear in the pane (they're JPEG images). I haven't excluded any file types in the Import Settings, and I've tried both JPEG Only and Both (JPEG as Master) under RAW + JPEG. All of this worked fine with iPhoto '09, which is what I was using before I switched to Aperture. If I change the preferences back to what they were, with iPhoto set to open automatically when a camera is connected, it works like it used to. Any ideas? It would be a pain to have to import everything into iPhoto and then transfer it to Aperture.

    Ubele,
I'm afraid I don't know what you mean about reading the Terms of Use. I read them. Did I do so something incorrectly?
No, didn't mean to imply anything was wrong. Some of us in the forum just like to point out the Terms of Use to new users. Sorry about any confusion.
There's also the iPhone issue, where my iPhone doesn't show up at all in Aperture
I don't have an iPhone to help with personal experience. However, I seem to remember other users have reported that they can use their iPhone with Aperture only when iTunes is also active. However I cannot find any of those threads at the moment to help direct you to better details.
Yes, I do have new images on my camera. When they didn't appear in Aperture, I opened iPhoto, and they showed up there.
This is indeed curious. Without any really good ideas at the moment, I would suggest [Troubleshooting Basics|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805], as there may be something wrong with your library.

  • FME freezes when connecting Canon HV20 via firewire

Hoping someone can help me out. I'm using a Canon HV20 camera
as a live video stream via FME and every time I try FME will freeze
and my laptop will freeze and I have to restart. My camera settings
are DV standard and it should work.
The necessary drivers for the Canon HV20 are installed and
I'm using a firewire card in my PC laptop that to connect the

Is there something I should modify/check on my system to

  • Canon camera power shoot SX 260 wifi smartphone problem

I discovered late that to send a photo taken with the power Shoot sx260 to my smartphone via wifi I really didn't have the right powershoot camera.  When I called last week Canon the technician said to try a card like eye-fi.  I purchased it and installed it on my computer.  I also downloaded the canon camera window program to the smartphone.  I put the wifi eye-fi card in the camera--took a photo and tried to get it to the smartphone--at first it seemed the smartphone recognized the camera and the camera screen said transferring--after a time the camera screen said not connected.  The photo doesn't seemed to have gotten to the smartphone.  Any advice would be much appreciated.  Regards, Len

Thanks so much--my computer operates with Windows XP--it's an older Dell.  My Smartphone is a Samsung which I got about 4 years ago from Verizon.  It's model number is SCH 1405.  It says it's hardware version is 1405.05 whatever that means--I'm not too good with electronic gadgets. [sigh]    I can't add anything about the error message--the camera seemed to try to connect to the smartphone but the photo never came through.
On the internet I found this at the Eye-fi site:
"When used with an Eye-Fi card, the Canon PowerShot SX260 HS stays powered on until wireless
media uploads are complete, has an onscreen icon, and offers the ability to enable/disable the Eye-Fi
cards Wi-Fi via the camera menu.
