Connecting over LAN problems

Hi, I'm trying to get a sample program going over a small desktop - laptop lan (both running windows 98se and named "desktop" and "laptop" on the network).
The program works fine when both server and client are on the same computer, but when I copy the client files to my laptop and run from there, I cannot connect, and get the following message:
java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.net.SocketPermission Desktop resolve)
here are some code snippets:
policy file on both server and client:
grant {
permission java.net.SocketPermission "*:1024-65535","connect,accept";
permission java.net.SocketPermission "*:80", "connect";
server:
Naming.rebind("//Desktop/helloObj", theRemoteObj);
client:
RmIntfc c1 = (RmIntfc)Naming.lookup("rmi://Desktop/helloObj");
I've seen similiar questions about setting up RMI over a LAN on the forums, but there weren't any corresponding answers! I'd like to try the simplest approach, ie, no webserver.
Thanks for any help!!

Hi
The problem is probably with the client-side permissions rather than the server. It may be that the permission file that you've set up is not being used, or that the permission syntax is not quite correct.
Try granting AllPermission to all codebases (on the client) and see if you can get the system working. Once you get it working, then you can be more selective with the permissions.

  • Remote Speaker connection over LAN

Even the Genius bar were puzzled over this one....
I have several airport express's and an AppleTV on my network connected wirelessly and hard-wired to my LAN.  I also have an iMac & MBA on the network which both use itunes.  The MBA can stream music to all the airport devices with no problem at all allong with iphones & ipads.  but my iMac which contains my master library will not play to any of the airports or appleTV when it is connected to the LAN.....?
If I disconnect the iMac from the LAN & access the network wirelessly I am able to stream to remote speakers.
my first thought was to bond my LAN connection to my wireless conncetion, but I lost internet connection when I did this.
    Any suggestion?

is anyone aware of any third part applications that allow you to bond a lan & wireless connection?  it seems strange that the airplay function works well when the mac is connected to my network wirelessly...
the Apple genus bar have recommended that I take all my network equipment into the store to try and resolve the issue, byt I am reluctant to do so as it is a lot of equipment.

  • Sharing an ISDN connection over LAN

I'm thinking of updating my Main computer and need some advice/help.
Currently I can only get ISDN where I live in Australia, which may be slow but it's also unlimited. I have a PC set up with the ISDN modem (USB connection) which it then shares to the Mac's on the Ethernet 10/100 LAN.
I was considering moving My G4 PowerMac into that roll, but I have several concerns.
First Running does Telstra (Australia) support Mac's running ISDN, their site is unclear. I will contact them to clear this up.
Second how easy is it to share a connection with other Mac's and PC's, can this be done wirelessly also?
But more important how long will the aging G4 last running 24/7, right now normally at night or when not in use (when I go out) I put it in to deep sleep but how long will the Mac last running all the time?
The main reason I need to think about this is the only 2yo PC might have a fault and I don't want to be left Internetless if it fails and I need to think about how to spend the limited money I have. I would prefer getting a cheap PC to use as my Internet and file server leaving my Mac's to actually use everyday. I have not had any security issues with this set up as I have firewalls set up on the PC and Mac's and security software on the PC.

While there are Mac boxes listed at the Telstra Bigpond site, I'd tend to look for an IDSN-capable firewall with Ethernet capabilities.
There appear to be several of these devices around that claim Telstra Bigpond compatibility. Cisco, NetGear, Traverse Technologies, Draytek and other vendors all appear to be in this market.
You'll probably want a network box with an ISDN port (or ADSL over ISDN, depending on what Telstra offers in your area), a firewall, and with some number of Ethernet ports (an Ethernet switch) and/or wireless networking. I'm not familiar with Telstra Bigpond ISDN in any detail, though I'd expect one of these devices to connect into the provided ISDN modem.
Cisco 801 and 803 routers come up in discussions fairly regularly, though Cisco routers aren't the easiest devices for new-to-Cisco folks to configure and manage. And these are comparatively expensive, even if you find them used.
You might also check with some Australian local vendors; there were substantial electronics stores in Sydney and Melbourne. They're likely rather more familiar with the local router/firewall options.

At first i must say that port 3050 and 3051 are open and all other things that i configured
like ssh, nomachine and murmur are working and i can connect to them even over internet.
But when i try connect to database over lan i got connection refuse errors and info that cant connect
    to database.
Firebird is 2.1.3 CS installed from official tarball from firebirdsql.org
Before Arch on server was CentOS and firebird was working fine
i changed the os because i love Arch and crappy CentOS was slow

  • Nokia C7 - Problem with VPN Connection over WLAN

    Hello,
today I installed Nokia VPN Client 44.01(5) for Belle.
Before this update I used the following configuration: I set two SIP-profiles up and for each profile a own VPN-connection. One for connecting over radio and one for connecting over WLAN or hotspots.
So over all I had three kinds of connections or connection groups to choose: "Internet" with the radio and home wlan connections, "Intranet" for the VPN-connection over radio and "Intranet over WLAN" for VPN-connections over other WLANs.
The advantage of this configuration was that I could use the SIP-profile depending on my location and the phone had not to use the "standard" VPN-connection ("Intranet") over radio.
Now after the update I have the problem that I can't connect to my VPN over WLAN at all. Not with the SIP profile and not manually over the internet browser. There is always the notification "Connection Problem".
I tried also to put the "VPN over WLAN access point" from the "Intranet over WLAN"-group to the "Intranet"-group and gave it the first priority, but that doesn't helped too.
Does someone of you had or have the same kind of problem or otherwise has any clue about that?
Any help is very much appreciated!
Thank you in advance! I hope that I described my problem clearly.

  • Competition problem between Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 on Photosmart C5180 connected via LAN

Hello everyone, I am writing because I need some advice / help on a problem last night while configuring a small network.
The network is made up as follows:
    2 notebook: Windows 8.1 and Windows 7
    3 different printers:
2 USB connected to the respective notebook,
1 HP Photosmart C5180 network printer connected via LAN via a router.
    The situation is the following:
both notebooks recognize the various printers and are able to send and print documents but,
when the print command starts from both notebook SIMULTANEOUSLY or at a distance of a few seconds, the only document printed is ALWAYS the one sent from the notebook with WINDOWS 8.1. The other one submitted by WINDOWS 7 IS LOST without being reported.
So if I ask of you is someone experienced in the print queues, print drivers, competition in the print jobs that can help me in solving this problem.
    Thanks in advance

    Hello cesco,
    Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you are having a communication issue when attempting to print on two separate printers at the same time.
This will be a communication issue for sure.  The computer can only send to one printer at a time. You will have to print to one printer, wait for it to finnish the print job and then send it to the other printer.
There is no way that you can print from one computer to two separate printers at the same time.
    Thanks for your time.
    Cheers,

  • Windows startup problem while connected from LAN.

    Hi,
Every time I start laptop which is connected from LAN, it stuck on Applying computer settings... screen. Then i have to disconnect laptop from LAN and restart it, after that it starts OK.
    Regards
    arun av

    Hi arun av,
Have you checked Bulent's sugegstion? Are you using local user profile or roaming user file? When you disconnect LAN, do you have a WLAN avaliable at that time? Try reinstall the driver for youe LAN network adapter
Or maybe related to this policy, when there's something wrong with the LAN, you're stuck on the startup process.
Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Logon\  Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon

  • Looking for help to improve Airport performance over LAN (WAN is fine)

Ok, I've read through several threads on this forum that address problems people are having with slow performance with Airport. I've also checked out all of the Apple KBs that address Airport, recommended settings. Unfortunately my issue isn't addressed by anything I've read to date.
The bottom line is that both download and upload performance between any of my devices and the internet is fine, no problems. I am paying for 30MBps download from Verizon FIOS, I routinely get 20, and I'm guessing that the delta is Verizon's problem, not my network's. However, streaming from my media server to another device on the wireless LAN is a different story entirely. I get somewhere between 1 and 2 MBps, tops, and this poses big problems for streaming music and movies.
My network is comprised of 3 Airport Expresses. One of them is a MC414LL/A model. This one is connected to my Verizon FIOS Actiontec MI424WR router (which I have set to bridge-mode according to the instructions provided at http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r17679150-Howto-make-ActionTec-MI424WR-a-network -bridge) via CAT5 ethernet. This Airport Express is set to "create a network" network mode, "802.11 only (5GHz) - 802.11b/g/n" radio mode (although I have also tried "802.11 only (5GHz) - 802.11/n only (2.4 GHz)" radio mode, and this didn't solve the problem). Finally, I have chosen 2.4 and 5GHz channels that have little interference (2 and 161 respectively). My other two Airport Expresses are MB321LL/A models and are set to "Extend a wireless network" network mode, with the 5GHz network chosen as the network that they extend. (I have tried switching over to having them extend the 2.4GHz network, and performance gets worse, not better.)
I am using a late 2009 Mac Mini as a media server. It is connected to the 5GHz network (though I've tried the 2.4GHz network), and it runs XBMC and JRiver media servers (not simultaneously, either one or the other.) I have a PS3 and a Sony Blu Ray player, each plugged into one of the MB321LL/A Airport Expresses via CAT5 ethernet, and I stream media to each of these devices via one or the other media server (both devices are DNLA-enabled). My Mac Mini has a 3TB external hard drive connected via FireWire 800, which is where all of my media resides. In addition to streaming media over the network, I have a TV plugged directly into the Mac Mini. When I play media to this TV, performance is outstanding, so I'm confident my poor performance to the PS3 and Sony BDP is a network issue, not an issue with the external drive.
Although my building has several other wireless networks, only one of them is 5 GHz, and it isn't using channel 161. The 2.4 GHz band is crowded with several networks, although channel 2 is usually in the clear. I have tried switching let Airport choose a channel automatically, and I haven't noticed a difference. It has occurred to me that the problem could be with how I bridged the Verizon Actiontec router and not with any of the Airports, but I don't get any errors (e.g. double NAT errors, which some people who have bridged improperly get), and I am pleased with my download and upload speeds to the internet. The issue is only on my LAN. Finally, yes, all of my firmware is up to date, version 7.6.3 on all three Airport Expresses.
Can anyone offer me suggestions for how I can get better performance streaming media from my server to the two playback devices? Since all 3 Airport Expresses support 5GHz, I'd have thought I'd be able to take advantage of 802.11n speeds when streaming between them. (MB321LL/A  supports "Draft N", but does this matter?) With the settings that I'm currently using, I can't stream faster than 2MBps (and that's on a good day), which is below what I ought to be able to get rom 802.11g. This is especially problematic when I try to stream hi res (96 MHz / 24 bit or higher)  music files, whether uncompressed or compressed. I hear awful pulsing sounds through my speakers. If I pause the track and let my streaming device buffer, I might get 10 or 15 seconds of clean playback, but then it starts the pulsing again as soon as the buffered music is finished playing. On occasion when I stream music from my iPhone via Airplay to one of the Airport Expresses, I get clean playback most of the time, but on occasion the music cuts out. (It's my understanding the Airplay requires ~800 Kbps, which seems consistent with my LAN speed usually being between 1 and 2 Mbps but sometimes dropping).
I have iStubler and I've used the Apple network diagnostics -- these are the tools that led me to choose channels 2 and 161 for 2.4 and 5GHz respectively. I'm sure I could be using these tools to learn more about my network's performance, but I'm sure what to look for.
    Thanks for your suggestions.

Ok, cool. I'm really glad that the issue has been isolated. Thanks a ton for your insight!
Hopefully I can find a spot where the signal strength of the hub is noticably better but that isn't too inconvenient for an ethernet run. My Sony BDP, which is the device connected to the problem basestation, has wifi capability, so I could always ditch the ethernet cable if the best spot for the basestation doesn't permit a cable run. But I'm aware that ethernet usually offers faster transfer speeds than wifi. Moreover, I'm not sure that the Sony BDP supports 5GHz. It might be a 2.4GHz-only device, in which case I'll have new interference issues to contend with, since like I said in my original post, there are several other 2.4GHz networks in my building.
Anyhow, now that I understand the problem, I can figure out a solution. Thanks again.

  • Socket connections on LAN?

I am designing a java application which will have 100 clients and a database server over LAN. There is no application server, only core java is used to write the programming logic. Now, to read, update or write anything to the database a bare socket connection will be made by the client to the server over LAN. Please tell me is it safe to perform this kind of communication? Will the network connection sustain for a long time or there are many chances that it may break easily? In no case will I be able to use an application server. Can I design such an application that communicates through bare sockets with no protection as such?

If you use stream sockets your connection will survive for long periods of time. I have an application that connects to a mainframe by sockets and to Oracle using OCI (which uses sockets) that stays up for a week at a time, only stopping when the mainframe goes down for weekly maintenance. It recovers when the mainframe restarts by attempting to reconnect once a minute.
This said, you still should deal with the inevitable situation where the connection is lost due to network problems or aproblemon your server.

  • Connecting over VPN using Toad

    Hello,
We have started experience problems connecting to our 9i and 10g databases when using Toad over a VPN connection. Although a connection is actually made nothing is returned to the Toad client and it justs hangs. This problem only occurs over a VPN. When connected to the LAN there is no problem. Also it is possible to connect over the VPN using SQL Developer. This has only recently started happening. In the past we have been able to connect over the VPN without a problem. Sounds like a Toad problem? Yes! I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this and new of a resolution.
    Thanks James

    Hi ,
The OP is able to connect through SQL Developer using VPN so no issues with VPN,The OP is facing problem when connecting using TOAD so:
1)Try to disconnect the TOAD and than try if that doesn't work can you please type the error message you are getting while connecting to the TOAD using VPN.
    Best regards,

  • Wake over LAN

Since updating to X.6.8 my MP has problems waking remotely. I'm connected to my router by Ethernet.
I haven't tried all that much to resolve this as I'm not aware there is anything else but the wake over LAN checkbox to enable this service. I have tried unchecking the box and re-checking it, I've also tried restarting my router and setting a different length of time before the MP goes to sleep.
Oddly enough I can wake the MP if I try a little time after it goes to sleep, but if I leave it for several hours it won't wake.
It isn't just one situation/application that won't wake it either, my Apple TV won't, shared devices from the finder on other macs won't and other services like the Apple remote app and eyeTV app from the iPhone won't either.
    Any thoughts.

hoping someone can help me here, as I want to accomplish WOL in my workplace. I'm in a building that has a central router that divides the internet into 4 different offices (into jacks in the wall). The central router is a linksys befsr41 that I don't have access to because it belongs to the property manager. The central router's ip address is 192.168.1.1 This router is not wireless, but I need wireless in my office, so I have my wrt54gc in my office to use with my tablet pc. I've gotten my computer to wake up no problem over LAN at home, over WAN at home (from remote location), but when I'm at my office (2 routers chained together) I don't know what I need to do to get it to work consistently. So my questions are: 1. What settings, if any, do i need to change on the central router? Do I need to port forward to the IP of MY router (or my CPU)?? 2. Same question for my router? I've looked all over the net and can't find any info on what to do for WOL in a multiple router environment such as mine. I guess I need to somehow tell that magic packet thingy to go through the central router, then through my router, and recognize my MAC address and ip. I really appreciate help in this matter.

  • K7D Master-L with LAN problems

I've just completed construction of my new K7D Master-L based machine and am running into LAN problems.  The first K7D Master-L I received had a bad IDE controller on it, and now the replacement board has intermittent LAN issues.
WinXP Pro installed fine, and I was able to install the LAN driver from the MSI CD and get things up and running fine.  After about 20 minutes or so, the LAN connection drops out and then comes back a few minutes later.  This cycle repeats over and over.  There are no duplicate IP addresses on the network, there are no errors in the XP system log, and all of the other systems on the network continue to work fine during these down periods.
I checked on the MSI website, and there are no drivers available for the Intel 82551QM lan controller that is on the K7D Master-L board.  Does anyone know where I can get an updated driver to try?  These types of problems are most frustrating to debug.
    Thanks,
    Norm

    Just an update to this:
The problem is definately the onboard LAN controller.  I've tried a Netgear card as well as a real PCI based Intel Pro 100 card and both are working great.  When I take the PCI cards out and try to use the onboard LAN, I still get intermittent outages.
Very strange.  If any MSI engineers are listening, I'd love to hear your opinions.  According to the OS, there are no IRQ, memory, or other conflicts that might be to blame.

  • Belkin wireless modem and Airport Express lan problems

Let me preface my problem by stating the obvious - I'm not very technically proficient!
That said, I've had an AirPort Express wireless lan connecting three computers on my home/office network for the past 8 months without any problems at all. All machines on the network have been able to access the internet via a Thomson SpeedTouch 530 ADSL1 modem that connects via an ethernet cable to the AirPort Express. No problems.
The network consists of my G5 iMac (ALS), my husband's Mac mini and my Sony VAIO laptop (XP Pro SP2).
I should also mention that half-way between my office and my husband's office there is a second AirPort Express that 'boosts' the signal to his office.
I recently changed ISPs to a provider that offers the faster ADSL2+ service. This meant that I had to get a new Belkin ADSL2+ modem. This is my problem. I cannot connect my AirPort Express network to the internet using the Belkin modem. The Belkin modem connects without any problem if I just have it connected via ethernet to my iMac but that's not what I want to do.
My existing AirPort details are -
    IPv4 Address: 10.0.1.3
Router 10.0.1.1 (this is the SpeedTouch 530 modem)
    Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
I thought I could change the new modem's address(?terminology?) from 10.1.1.1 (which is how it came) to 10.0.1.3 and that everything would work but it doesn't.
Belkin tech support said 'the problem is with your AirPort Express' (what else would they say)?
Do I have to keep the 10.1.1.1 and change my AirPort addresses? Or should I try to set up a new network?

  • Randomly losing network connection over wireless

Shortly after installing the 10.4.5 software update, my G4 iBook with built-in Airport Extreme card has been losing connection with increasing frequency. Built-in Ethernet use is unaffected. I'm calling this problem thrash-and-drop.
    1. When it's losing signal, processor activity goes through the roof. I had Activity Monitor running during a thrash-and-drop. kernel_task CPU consumption goes from under 1% before the event, to over 80% during the thrashing, and back under 1% after the thrashing stops. The activity is so bad the cursor can't be controlled: using the track pad sends the pointer all over the screen or nowhere at all.
    2. This has been observed to occur with two different wireless base stations: A Linksys WRT54G and an older SMC 802.11b router. Either router is within 10 feet of the computer. Only one is running at a time. There are no other base stations in range.
    3. Another iBook G4 (OS 10.3, Airport Extreme card (not built-in)), sitting next to it, shows no change and its wireless behavior is unaffected.
Initially, this seemed more likely to happen when Safari was loading Flash-heavy pages. And after thrashing and dropping a connection, it was able to reconnect after either a reboot or a five minute sleep. Currently, it can't connect to a base station for more than a minute. Most recently, it thrashed and dropped while I was selecting the base station to use. This is true regardless of the application running. In fact, it will thrash-and-drop when there are no user applications running at all, after a fresh reboot.
I've tried the following things to address the problem. None have affected the thrash-and-drop problem. Admittedly, most of this is random:
    1. Back up and delete network preferences in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
    2. Turn off IPv6 in System Preferences/Network
    3. Back up and delete network preferences in ~/Library/Preferences (com.apple.NetInfoManager.plist and com.apple.NetworkUtility.plist)
Has anybody else seen this problem? I want to blame it on the 10.4.5 upgrade but I haven't seen anybody else complaining about 10.4.5 doing this to them. If there's something I can do to fix this in a software setting, I'd much prefer that to yet another roadtrip to the Apple store.
    1.33 GHz G4 iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hi!
I have the same problem of randomly losing network connection over wireless, though mine is hardly related to surfing.
I have an external storage drive in which I use for backup of my stuff, and I access the drive via my modem, using the airport. Of late, I noticed that when copying files from my iBook to the external drive, the connection would suddenly drop before the transfer is completed. This began to occur with increasing frequency, particularly when transferring large files.
I have since abandoned wireless connection, and reverted to my trusty cable. Still, I admit that I'm really curious about the cause of the apparent lack of reliability with my wireless connection. Has it something to do with the airport?
