Connectivity while traveling to London

Work is sending me to London for a bit over a week. I plan to take my WiFi + 3G iPad. I assume I won't have any trouble connecting to Wi-Fi networks? I'm also guessing I'm out of luck in connecting to phone service with my iPad but thought I'd turn to the experts here for advice. What has been your experience? What do you recommend?

Here in the UK at least 4 providers offer iPad data plans - just pop into their stores and one of them will be able to sort you out. Here's their websites:

  • Connection while traveling in India

Is there a external device for the ipad model mc820ll while traveling in india that I may use to get on the internet?

Really...I travelled all over Europe back in 2009 using my Verizon phone.
I did the same thing I did this time and had my plan temporarily changed to
international coverage.  I had no problem connecting calls.  So are you
just making this up?  SE Asia was a big fail for Verizon on so many
levels.  I am heading for Turkey next.  Maybe with a new carrier.

  • Connecting to the Internet While Traveling

I am new to wireless and have been connecting to the internet on my MacBook using a standard ethernet cable at home. But now I'll be traveling and want to have internet access as many places as possible. Can someone please help with instructions on what I need to do/buy, etc.
    Thanks!

One thing to carry is an ethernet cable, as hotels often have ethernet ports in the rooms.
There usually isn't any trouble receiving mail, but there may be in sending it if the hotel is not using your ISP's server. Usually a call to your ISP will tell you which port number to use for outgoing mail while traveling. This is set in Mail>Preferences>Accounts>Advanced.
For wireless, usually you just turn on the wireless, and if it doesn't find any of your usual wireless networks, you will be asked if you want to join a network that it can find. You can just click on the network and then on "join", providing a password if required.
You can practice this at your local wireless cafe or local wi-fi hot spot.
One precaution--don't do anything sensitive like banking at a popular free hot spot--save that for a more private setting. You don't want someone looking over your shoulder getting passwords, for example. I'm not totally up on what's safe and what isn't, and maybe someone will post some more explicit information, but I'd stick to innocuous things until you know more about what is safe and what is not.
    Good luck, and happy traveling!

  • Can I sync my ipod nano with my second computer/ netbook while travelling?

Looking for some advice on how to connect my IPod nano with my second computer while travelling. That's what happened: I have my iTunes library on my computer at home and can sync my IPod nano (6 th generation, replaced onyl recently) with that library. While I was travelling and wanted to use my IPod I received an error message asking me to connect the IPod with iTunes in order to recover/restore (sorry, the message apeared in German, so I do not know the exact wording in English) . As I only had my second computer - a small netbook - with me, I downloaded iTunes and connected the iPod - only to receive the message that this Ipod would sync with another computer (sure!) and would I want to sync it with this iTunes library instead now? (Of course not, I did not dare because that library was empty!). So there I was with my computer with iTunes library at home and an iPod stuck in recovery mode and not doing a thing during my vacation. Any suggestions? If I have to take my great big workstation with me to get the iPod running again, I might just as well leave the iPod immobile at home. (;-)

On your home computer connect your Nano, click on the name in iTunes, move right to the Summary tab then tick the box that says Manually Manage Music. You will now have to er, manually drag your music to your iPod, and manually eject it when done, but you will be able to add music from two different computers.

  • How to properly update iTunes content while traveling abroad?

Spent some time searching and found a number of threads covering T&Cs and whys and wherefores of US Citizens on extended overseas travel trying to update or purchase iTunes content. There's a lot of 'why not' but not much 'how to'.
I'm seeking the Apple-approved solution for those of us with US based iTunes accounts who are traveling or deployed overseas or take extended temporary jobs abroad. How can we legally, properly, update our podcast subscriptions, apps for iPhones, or purchase content?
Do we have to simply change the country setting at the bottom of the iTunes Store window, so we are interacting with whatever the local Store is and the content will live happily in iTunes no matter which Store it was purchased from?
Do we have to set up a new account with local credit card in every land we are assigned?
There has to be a way, it seems illogical that you can't update podcasts or apps while traveling. There's got to be an Apple-approved method for this!
If anyone knows the answer or a link to the answer or something near to it, please provide the info. The T&C are clear enough in regards to "purchases" and using the US store only from in the US, but doesn't answer the 'how-to' for customers traveling abroad who are not spending any money by getting new podcast episodes or free app updates.
So again, no need to rehash the T&C, just seeking the 'proper' way to update things if away for a while. I'll be stupefied if I hear that the official Apple answer is the iPhone content is frozen in place until I get back in US territory.
    Thanks.

    Thanks for the reply, Chris.
After posting the message, I changed my iTunes Store to India (where there may be work opportunities) and there were only Apps and iTunes U content tabs, and the T&C were similar-can only shop at the store where you are connecting from. So unless the store looks different when logging in while physically in India, there wouldn't be a way to update podcasts.
I am concerned about an important distinction, though, which is 'what will work' vs. 'what is T&C compliant'...

In addition to RyanJC's comments, the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) can store up to five different http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108081 configuration profiles. You will need to use the AirPort Utility to create & save these profiles.
    To create a new profile:
Open AirPort Utility, select your AX from the list, and then, click "Manual Setup."
From the AirPort Utility menu, select "Base Station," and then "Manage Profiles."
Click "+" to create a new profile; give it a name, and then, click OK.
Set options, such as network name, passwords, Internet connection method, etc.
When done setting the options, click Update.
    To switch profiles:
Open the AirPort Utility, select your AX from the list, and then, click "Manual Setup."
From the AirPort Utility menu, select "Base Station," and then "Manage Profiles."
Click on the desired profile, and then, click OK to apply the new profile and restart the AX.
Just remember to switch to the desired configuration profile before removing power from the AX.

    Hello, no ice.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
As long as you purchase the GSM model and acquire a Nano-SIM card, you should be able to use your iPad abroad.  Here is some information about this process that you may find helpful.

  • How do I copy MP4 files onto my IPad while travelling?

    Hello all
I picked up my first IPad through work last week, and am still familiarising myself with the device. What I did manage to do is connect it to ITunes on my home computer and copy all of our childrens TV shows onto the device for our daughter to watch, and it all went smoothly.
I have a question regarding this process however. I tend to watch a lot of TV shows, and in most cases I wait until after the season is finished and pick up the boxed set, so that I can watch it when I want, without commercials. What I then do is convert them to (unprotected) MP4 files that I then usually copy to my PS3 to watch them on our TV. Just as a test, I copied a few onto the IPad and they look great, I could easily see myself using this device to watch shows while travelling.
However, our IPad is only 16 gigs, and in longer trips I would probably want to take more shows than that would allow. I also have a 1 Terrabyte portable harddrive though, that I can fit ample amount of shows on.
At the moment I have only connected the IPad to one computer running ITunes, which is my PC at home. However lets assume I was travelling, and had both my external hard drive and IPad. What would be the best solution for copying movies from that external harddrive to the IPad to allow me to watch additional shows?  Unless I'm mistaken, I can have up to 5 computers authorised with my account.  Would it in theory be possible to find a PC, authorise it to my Ipad, copy the files over and then deauthorise that PC?  Or if not, what is the recommended solution?
Apologies if this is common knowledge, I'm still a newbie.

Even though you can have your iTunes account authorized on 5 computers your iPad can only be linked to one computer. If you used another computer to copy your content from your external drive you would have to Restore the iPad with the computer erasing all other data. The process will allow you to backup then Restore to that back up but it will not contain any of the media files you wish to keep on the iPad. This is why it is important to get the most storage on an iOS device you can afford.
You might want to look at something like Kingston's Wi-Drive which is an external drive your iPad can access through wifi. http://www.kingston.com/us/usb/wireless#wid I don't think it has any integration with iTunes but you could put a copy of the videos you wish to take with you then play them on it it's app.

  • Is there any way to use iphone as a backup for images while travelling

Iphone would make a great back up store for digital images taken with a real camera while travelling, if there was a way to transfer full resolution image files from a PC to iphone via USB. When I am travelling light, I dont carry a laptop with itunes and the iphone doesn't appear as a drive when connected to a computer. Not sure why the file system is hidden.
    Any ideas for this?

The iphone does not support disk mode, which would allow it to be used for storage.
At present, I know of no way to do what you want.

  • Creative Cloud validation while traveling

I travel for long periods of time as a photographer. At least one of the countries I stay in, for periods of 3 to 4 months (Grenada, and there are probably others) apparently do not have Creative Cloud. While in Grenada, will I have difficulty validating my Creative Cloud (every 30, 99 days, whatever?) or downloading other programs with it? Any other Creative Cloud concerns while traveling I need to be aware of?

    Hi snap2916
As your account billing details are in Canada you can sign up for Creative Cloud membership.  Although we don't sell direct to Grenada, you would still be able to use your CC membership while traveling.
    From the FAQ:
"An Internet connection is required the first time you install and license your desktop apps, but you can use the apps in offline mode with a valid software license. The desktop apps will attempt to validate your software licenses every 30 days.
For annual members, you can use the apps for up to 99 days in offline mode. Month-to-month members can use the software for up to 30 days in offline mode.
    Thanks
    Bev

  • Movie rentals on laptop while traveling??

    Hi all,
I rented a movie on my iBook that I intended to watch while traveling. While I know you need an internet connection to iTMS to transfer a rental movie to an iPod, evidently you need a connection to watch a rental movie on your Mac as well (as I unfortunately found out when I tried to watch and couldn't). The iTMS connection requirement really limits renting a couple of movies to watch on your laptop on, say, an airplane (or, in my case, a ship). I could've transferred the movie to my iPod when I rented it, but I'm able to connect my iBook to a TV - a capability that I don't have for my iPod.
I'm certainly not the brightest bulb on the tree, but I can't find this requirement documented anywhere. Does anyone know of any workarounds?
    tia,
    Brad

Same here, I rented three movies to watch for my flight to Korea, when I tried to watch then iTunes tried to connect to the internet to authorize the viewing. Talk about a poor implmentation, kind of defeates the purpose of renting if you can't watch them on the road w/o an internet connection, how many planes, car's and boats have internet?? Hardly any.
Please people at Apple update your iTunes app to allow the 24 hour rental watching period to begin without needing an net connection. The current implementation is useless.

  • Playing music through nano and auto stereo, while traveling...nano is set to shuffle, but if vehicle is stopped for more than a few minutes, nano restarts with same song everytime! How do I make it really shuffle the songs

Having trouble with Nano shuffle while traveling.  It's connected to my vehicle stereo and set to shuffle. When I stop the vehicle for more than a few minutes, the music resumes with the same song it always starts with. How can I get it to keep shuffling after restarting the vehicle?

Is the iPod actually doing the music playing?  If the iPod is connected using a USB port (on the car audio system) and docking cable, the car audio system is doing music playing.  The iPod is just acting as a storage device (like a USB flash drive) with song files.  So, in that setup, it does not matter whether the iPod is set to shuffle or not, because the car audio system is playing the songs.  Any change to how it plays songs would have to be a setting on the car audio system.

  • I will be using public wifi for 3 months while traveling, do I need VPN for security?

I will be using public wifi for 3 months while traveling, do I need VPN software? And is it needed at the receiving end?

As long as you only enter your password in secure web forms, connect to secure mail servers, and don't mind if a stranger is watching which Internet servers you connect to (but can't see what you do with them), a VPN isn't necessary.

  • Can I use iPhone 5c while traveling abroad?

Can I use iPhone 5c while traveling abroad to obtain data connection? please help

Ask your carrier. It will depend on whether you have a plan that allows international roaming and whether that includes data.
You can use WiFi anywhere in the world where there is an available WiFi network you're authorized to connect to.

  • Best way to save and view raw files while traveling.  I have dropbox but new ipad user and not sure of best way.

What is the best way to save photos when shooting RAW while traveling.  Would like to save raw files but also view and email from iPad.  I also have dropbox.  Will be in Europe next spring.

Unfortunately, the playback of non-iOS-native video formats (everything except mov / mp4 / m4v) is horrible through Apple TV and it, because of the inherent speed restrictions of Wi-Fi, can't be helped other than:
    - pre-converting your video files to mov / mp4 / m4v before playing them. (THis is the best solution.) For this, you will want to use the absolutely best and fastest video converter, the free(!!!) HandBrake. Don't ever think of paying any money for any video converter - most other titles are way inferior to HandBrake. (See http://www.iphonelife.com/blog/87/benchmark-excellent-multimedia-converter-handb rake-vs-commercial-apps for more info on this q.)
    - using a VGA or HDMI adapter and connecting your TV directly to the iPad.
In the thread at https://discussions.apple.com/message/18697551?ac_cid=sa123456#18697551 , we've also discussed this problem (AirPlay vs. cabled playback)
