Console resolution and X on dual screen

I'm using a laptop with an external display.
The laptop max resolution is 1024x600 and the external's is 1680x1050.
I've got xorg running this script on login:
# If an external monitor is connected, place it with xrandr
# External output may be "VGA" or "VGA-0" or "DVI-0" or "TMDS-1"
EXTERNAL_OUTPUT="VGA"
INTERNAL_OUTPUT="LVDS"
xrandr |grep $EXTERNAL_OUTPUT | grep " connected "
if [ $? -eq 0 ]; then
xrandr --output $INTERNAL_OUTPUT --off --output $EXTERNAL_OUTPUT --auto
else
xrandr --output $INTERNAL_OUTPUT --auto --output $EXTERNAL_OUTPUT --off
fi
Then when I close my window manager, this script runs:
#/bin/sh
xrandr --output VGA --off --output LVDS --auto
fluxbox-remote "Exit"
The only time the console resolution is correct is after i've closed my window manager and this script has run.
I'm using hal and don't have an xorg.conf. Is this the issue? I also have VGA=790 in my grub config. I guess my question is, what am I missing, and would there be a better way to do this?
Edit: if it helps, im using an intel gma945 in an msi wind

Okay, I got the console to work from bootup using vga=normal. Now the only time my console is unusable is after leaving xorg when I had been using the external screen and didn't run my script at logout. So when i reboot/shutdown, kill x, crash x or switch to a vt (ctrl-alt-Fx) the screen is jacked up. If I never startx, or make sure to use my script to close x, everything is okay.

  • Dual-Screen Sessions with Oracle Desktop Client

    Dear All,
I have read that the new version of the SRSS and SRWC support dual-screen separation with Windows 2008 R2 sessions, i.e. Windows sessions are able to determine that they are running on a dual-screen device and allow separation as you'd expect on a fat client. Does anyone know if this functionality is available via the Sun Ray software client or if I'll have to invest in Sun Ray 3 Plus devices? Has anyone actually got this working at all?
    Many thanks.
    Chris

OK. I've applied patch -05 to the SRSS (which is odd because I thought I'd downloaded 5.1.1) which installed without complaint and have upgraded my copy of the Mac OVDC to 2.1.9.
I've run the command (see previous post) and now I can't seem to connect to the SRSS with or without a card - it's not even connecting to the server to get a pseudo session.
What version of the SRSS patching comes with the 5.1.2 download? It's very confusing with the version numbers not correlating. 5.1.1 seems to come with patch -06 but it refuses to install...
    Many thanks.

  • WINE and my Dual-screens

I have looked around, quite a bit, haven't found a answer that i've been really looking for...
I'm a big gamer, and I run two 17" flatpanel monitors at 1280x1024 on a NVIDIA GeForce GTS250.
When I run apps in WINE, it tries pushing each app out in 2560x1024, such as World of Warcraft... now, for WoW, it doesn't bother me. because my UI scales to 1280x1024 for some reason anyway.
As for games, like PoRTaL and Left4Dead.... it's trying to squeeze 2560x1024 into one monitor, making them pretty much unable to play..
I have tried emulating the app in a virtual environment, at 1280x1024... and I really don't wanna disable my other monitor every time.... Because I use them for Cheats, or a guide, whatever I tend to use it for...
Is there a way to push these apps into 1280x1024 instead of my dual-screen resolution?
It's one of the main issues for me keeping Winblows 7 on my computer... pretty sure once I figure this out, i can get rid of it.
Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, probably wasn't searching the right terms and what not.

Perhaps, if you are interested, you could setup a new xorg.conf which has separate X sessions for each window (rather than TwinView), such that you could open up what you want on one window, then play your game on the other.  Even if that is beyond what you want, you could check out ways to dynamically turn off screens:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=81310
For a while there I would launch games via scripts, which called xrandr first to turn off my second screen, but these days I launch everything with xinit to avoid turning off/on compiz for max performance.
I'm interested to see what you decide on, post back here
I have thought about both options, and I'm not sure if I wanna do either of them,
I mean, I want WINE apps to go into 1280x1024 which makes sense that I won't be able to unless I disable a monitor or run two separate X sessions, which I'll probably set it up to run two separate X sessions.
Still doing some research and making my decision.

  • Xfce4 and dual screen issues

I have setup dual screen in xfce4, i have added
    xrandr --output VGA --left-of LVDS
to xfce4 startup apps. But the issue is that both screen defaults to 1024x768 and if it change the resolution to the correct one my laptop screen turn black. This is some what the similar kind i issue i face in kdemod4 but gnome work ok with with the above command.

    What video card?
    What drivers?

  • Video resolution and dual monitor assistance

Trying to set up a show running on a windows XP Pro PC with dual monitor (ATI HD3870 card) so that videos run using Windows Media Player (or maybe something else if needed?) on the second monitor (actually a large projector).
The videos are synchronised to DMX lighting using software so can't just be run from a DVD.
All the videos have been developed using HDV anamorphic PAL 25fps footage but are rendered out using Premiere CS3 at 1280 x 720 (to keep 16:9 ratio at the highest resolution the projector/card (plus VGA extender cable) can handle.
The videos can be launched quite happily on a single monitor system at this resolution and in any format (WMV, AVI, etc). The videos are launched via software using DirectShow (this is 3rd party software). BUT, when outputting to the second monitor the video playback doesn't work at any resolution above 720 x 576. It works fine at 720 x 576, but obviously when projected the image is way smaller than we need.
Note that Windows Media Player will play higher resolution files on the dual monitor but not in full screen mode.
So, the question is where does the problem lie and how can we fix it? Can Windows Media Player not run higher resolutions in dual monitor mode? Do we need a specific graphics card to handle this? Is Windows XP an issue? (PS we had the PC running Vista previously but found that the TMM module in Vista was affecting the screen resolution settings). Do we need to render out of Premiere in some specific way? Has anyone got any experience of something similar?
    Thanks!

Thanks guys. There's no issue with playing the video when launching it direct in Windows Media Player. Its just when launched from the DirectShow API. We've now got a 3rd party looking at that API and have a temporary fix.
So for future reference there are no specific problems with the rendering, codecs or resolutions, but there may be an issue with applications that launch high res media on to a 2nd monitor with the DirectShow API.
    thanks

Where you have a monitor as the display and a seperate keyboard, but the keyboard is another monitor which operates as a keyboard, for example something like this...
This ultimately would mean that the keyboard could be application driven, that is it could be specifically configured anyway that the application requires it.  I'd also like to see a dual screen option for touchsmart PC - a screen that is built in and can be slid out from the rear of the monitor to act as dual screen, extended screen...

  • Using Keynote with Podcast Capture and Dual Screens

    Hi everyone,
We are trying to use a dual screen setup to record some Keynote presentations using Podcast Capture (i.e Dual mode, with the Keynote presentation in one screen and the presenter in the other).
The problem we are having is that when in full screen mode, Keynote takes control of both displays, thus stopping the Podcast application from being displayed. Even if we switch off the Presenter Display on the second screen, the second screen turns black.
I know we can start and stop recording with hotkeys, but we would prefer to be able to see the Capture app in one window with the presentation full screen in the other.
Perhaps this is just an oversight on Apple's part, but I'm finding it hard to believe its not possible. If anyone else has a workaround then please share.
    Thanks.

Other applications are not visible when Keynote is playing back.  Keynote takes over control of the graphics system when playing back presentations to enable Keynote to display properly.
When I play back Keynote and I want to look at a second application, I use a second Mac.

  • Changing resolution and image size doesn't change result on screen?

I'm using Photoshop CS3. I am trying to change the resolution of several images that will be printed in a newspaper. So the current images are 72 ppi and really huge -- for example 36 x 27 inches (document size), and when I change them to 300 ppi, the image sizes shrink to about 8 x 6 inches, as I expect. But the image I see on the screen doesn't change. So, for example, when I open up the image originally, it's at 33% and the entire image is visible. After I change the resolution, and the image size has changed accordingly, the image still appears the same and it remains at 33%. Shouldn't the image shrink on the screen since its size has shrunk? Or if it remains the same on the screen, shouldn't the percentage shift? I mean if the document size is now 8 x 6, it should be able to be displayed at 100% and not fill my whole screen... I'm so confused. Thanks...

    gradded,
The "Document Size" area of the Image Size dialog is just to indicate the size (in inches) that your document will be printed. The ppi adjustment has nothing to do with what is displayed on your monitor. Your monitor doesn't care anything about ppi. The monitor contains a certain number of pixels and after you change that ppi setting, the monitor will still have that same number of pixels.
As long as you leave the "Resample Image" box unchecked, your image size (Pixel Dimensions) will not change. You will see no change on your monitor. If you check the "Resample Image" box, then your image size (in pixels) will change.
    Hope this helps.

  • Microsoft Word consistently becomes active window when clicking between dual screens and programs

    13" MBP
    2.3 ghz i5
    8GB Ram
    Running 10.9.2
    Microsoft Word 2011
Dual screens with amazon Mini Display to VGA adapter
When I am running word between an external monitor and my MBP, Microsoft word always interrupts any clicks between programs and between screens to become the active window. This is especially annoying when I am trying to navigate between MacMail and Chrome, or any other programs.
The problem doesn't exist when I click between programs on the MBP, but only when I select windows between the two screens. Or programs on the external monitor.
Word is up to date, as is my MBP.
Please don't punt me to Microsoft, they're the worst!
    Thanks!

There is a workaround for this problem, which was posted by Highestwater on the Microsoft Community thread for this bug and worked for me as well:
    Go to
System Preferences > Mission Control >
and UN-check the box labeled "Displays have separate Spaces" (see image below)
The original poster on this thread may already be aware of this workaround, because he/she mentioned that the "separate Spaces" option is checked. But if you can live without the extra Mavericks dual display features (like going full screen in 1 display only, switching spaces independently on each display, and having a menu bar on each display), then uncheck this option and the "stealing focus" bug seems to disappear. For me the bug is so annoying that it's worth it to lose the extra features. Just yesterday I closed a Word document I was working on by mistake because I clicked on a Finder window on my other display and immediately pressed command-w to close it, without realizing that the focus had switched to my word document which closed instead. It was saved, but this sort of stuff interrupted my work enough to be both an annoyance and a time drain.

  • Skippy-xd and cairo-dock ignore screen resolution in openbox

Hey, this is the first time I'm posting since I usually solve my problem using this forum and google but I this time they failed me.
I recently switched from gnome to openbox and in the process of making myself comfortable I installed first skippy-xd and then cairo-dock.
I had to set the screen resolution (1920x1080), which was too low in the beginning, using xrandr and while trying to solve my problem I also created "/etc/X11/xorg.conf-d/10-monitor.conf". Unfortunately skippy-xd seems to ignore the new resolution when I enter the window picker and I end up having the window overview only covering a part of my screen. First I thought that was a skippy-xd specific problem but after installing cairo-dock I noticed, that the dock got displayed at the bottom of the same "window" that skippy occupied. So I guess there has to be some underlying problem that causes both of these programs to ignore my set screen resolution and instead go with the one openbox assigned to me in the beginning.
The same configuration works flawless on my laptop. And I search google up and down in order to find a solution.
    Thanks in advance,
    meloxu

I saw your post, and had found it incredulous that you have a 1920x1080 display.  A bit of research and I found I was wrong.
So, it appears you are driving the panel at its native resolution.  Unfortunately, trying to determine what you mean by "Fuzzy" is probably going to be like trying to nail Jello to a tree.  But, let's give it a shot.  Is it fuzzy before you start X?  Are lines and shapes fuzzy? Or is it just text that is fuzzy?
If it is just fonts, it could be a problem with hinting.  Hinting is where the edges of fonts are deliberately fuzzed and feathered to get the kerning correct when the physical pixels of the display don't quite line up.  This works well, unless the thing doing the hinting does not understand the geometry of the display.  In a color LCD, each pixel is actually made up of smaller sub pixels, generally three -- A red, a green, and a blue.  Green is usually in the middle.  Some displays have Two greens per pixel, arranged RGBG.  Some displays even have yellow subpixels.  Sometimes the subpixels are arranged left to right, sometimes they are arranged top to bottom.  Long story short, if you have hinting enabled, but the geometry is configured incorrectly, bad things happen.   Take a look at this wiki article

  • [dwm] fibonacci patch doesn't work and DWM dual screen.

Dwm has minimal support for dual screens.   AFAIK they are still working on the best way to support it.  If you must have dual screens the way awesome handles them, I'd suggest you use awesome for the time being.
For the record I am a dwm user, but I'm using 4.7 because the code got cluttered when they started adding dual screen support.  Once it is implemented in a sensible way I'll upgrade.

  • Best screen resolution and output for CBT

What would be the best screen resolution and output mode IYO for a CBT (Computer Based Training) program?  We would like to do either CD or online.  We are toying with either, so which do you think would be a better option for what Captivate is capable of?  Thanks!

    Nclarkats,
While most of our employees have similar screen resolutions, a few have larger (or smaller) set ups and since we wish to avoid horizontal and vertical scroll bars; we publish with Captivate's 800 x 600 setting.  This allows us to get a bit larger imagery in place.
Whatever you choose, try and pick something and stay consistent.  This is beneficial in the event you have to transfer slides between modules.
    Hope that helps.

There are only a couple choices. Either return the monitor for a brand name monitor that is Mac compatible, or use third-party software (DisplayConfigX or SwitchRes X) to make up for the Optiquest's display driver deficiency and configure the required 1280 x 1024 timing manually.
