Consoles in solaris 9
I just installed Solaris 9 and can't use the ctrl-alt-f1, ctrl-alt-f2, etc as you can in Linux and BSDs. I installed Solaris 8 a while back and remembered using a purely text based console. Does Solaris 9 not support virtual consoles like a lot of other UNIXs do? I'm stuck in Gnome and am too used to using a console. Thanks.
There is a lot to be taken into consideration before desiding on your backup strategy, but if you're a little confused with different options (ufs snaps, jumpstart, good old ufsdump, etc.), the choice is still simple -- ufsdump/ufsrestore are the tools you would use to perform regular backups. UFS snapshots can not be considered a reliable backup, since it depends on the reliability of the filesystem -- you loose the filesystem, you loose the snapshot and therefore to be a true backup it still needs to be backed up to an external source. I would not call flash archives and jumpstart a real backup either, since the real purpose of either is to have easy deployable system images to maintain a large number of systems. I'm sure it is possible to concoct a backup system relying on flash archives or jumpstart, but it would be quite combersome compared to true backup solutions. If you're looking for a free backup solution on Solaris, a way to go would be either ufsdump/ufsrestore or possibly open-source Amanda backup suite if you have a more complicated setup with tape loaders.

Solaris Management Console (SMC) - Solaris 9 x86
Ive just installed Solaris 9 (x86) version. Im unable to install Solaris Management console.
I was using below command to add listed patches:
pkgadd -d . SUNWpmgr SUNWrmui SUNWlvmr SUNWlvma SUNWlvmg
Im unable to find these packages on cd1. Somehow theyre on cd2. These cds are direct extract from Suns web site.
Anyway when I run the pkgadd command Im getting the following error:
No package associated with (SUNWpmgr)
When I look into the SUNWpmgr, there are 2 files (pkgmap., pkginfo.) and 3 dir (install, archive, reloc)
Same with other packages
Please help me.I was able to correct this problem on my server
The .server file is the smc java keystore that contains
the private/public key pair for SSL
You can create this file by executing
cd /usr/sadm/lib/smc/bin
certtool -genkey
Once the keys are generated execute
/etc/init.d/init.wbem stop
/etc/init.d/init.wbem start
if your smpatch no longer works

Rc3.d scripts dont echo messages on console in solaris 10
how can I make the rc3.d scripts messages echo on console?

I have a script that is started in the /etc/rc3.d directory. I have verified that they work under Solaris 10. It sends these messages to some logfile and then exits. How would I get it to echo to the screen instead?how can I make the rc3.d scripts messages echo on
console?Have them write to the console. Although that isn't necessarily a recommended practice now.

Since someone may not be watching the console at boot, Solaris 10 default is to take script ouptut and log it, so it will not be lost if the screen scrolls away.

Problems with Solaris Web Console on Solaris 10 x86
I recently installed Solaris 10 x86 (10/08 release) on a Sun x4450.
I have installed the Jan 14, 2009 patch cluster.
I was having some problems connecting to the Web Console to do some ZFS administration. That's when I installed the patch cluster.
After the patch cluster install I couldn't connect at all. This problem was resolved here: http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5249136
Now when I login to the Web Console I get a message that says:
"+No application is registered with this Sun Java(TM) Web Console, or you have no rights to use any applications that are registered. See your system administrator for assistance.+"
I'm logging in as root, so it shouldn't be a rights issue.Quick Solution to the problem you are facing
How to configure ZFS Webconsole Administration
run this command
wcadmin deploy -a zfs -z zfs /usr/share/webconsole/webapps/zfs
you should be able to see & Manage ZFS in Applications area of webconsole.
Enjoy ! Cheers -
Error starting 4.0 console on Solaris 10
When I bring up the console (es-start -c -- -p 1611) the login window appears, and after I enter the username, password, and server name, I get the following text in a popup window:
WARNING
Communication could not be established with the server.
The server version may be incompatible.
and the console never comes up (login screen remains). We are running Solaris 10 on a T5120. We have configured SunMC to use port 1611.
AndyMy bad. I reconfigured the agent to use port 1611, but I assumed (wrongly) that I also needed to send the port to the console. Running es-start -c (w/ no other args) fixed my problem.

No Java Console after Solaris upgrade
Hi,
after upgrading from Solaris 8 to Solaris 9, the Java Console stopped functioning. It starts and authenticates successfully, but as it reaches the stage "Starting Console...", it stucks there.
Admin server is running, I have checked it by running Console from another host (Solaris 8).
After doing some truss'es, I found that everybody is waiting for "java" (/iplanet/servers/directory52/bin/base/jre/bin/java) to exit, but it doesn't wants to.
I'm running Console bundled with DS 5.2 via ssh X forwarding. The same configuration worked before Solaris upgrade.
If you have some thoughts, share it with me.
Thanks,
KristofSee available classes in $ORACLE_HOME/jdbc/lib/.

Invalid Credentials in SAP Management Console on Solaris
I have been deploying the latest SAP Host Agent (Version 7.20, patch 63) on our Solaris 5.9 application servers. Days of reviewing and searching through SCN have not produced a resolution. There is a significant restriction in our environment that makes it impossible for the Basis team to get even temporary root access.
Other details of interest:
1. The users <SID>adm are local to each application server (/etc/shadow is in play).
2. These SAP notes have been reviewed 927639, 1564645, 992907,1348820 and many others.
To this point my Unix admin friends have not considered allowing any type of read access for <SID>adm to /etc/shadow.
It is more likely to snow this week here in Texas than getting root access on these servers.
Here are some of the files of interest for the SAP Host Agent
Contents of /tmp

--> Observations about this default installation of the SAP Host Agent software
1. <SID>adm has very limited access to the executables
2. Only root can edit host_profile. If the permissions are changed, saphostexec will not run (because the permissions have changed)
3. The group ownership of saphostexec is a severe restriction
4. Changing ownership of the executables to <SID>adm or sapadm will result in loss of OS information only accessible by root.
ps u2013ef | grep hostctrl
root 15763 1 0 Sep 01 ? 0:02 /usr/sap/hostctrl/exe/saphostexec pf=/usr/sap/hostctrl/exe/host_profile

Adding KDE desktop to console based Solaris 11
Im new to solaris, previously i hav used Linux preloaded with KDE or Gnome. I m using solaris 11 x86 on my Win7 ultimate with VMware Workstation. I used text installer to install on virtual disk and now this black screen makes me feel sick and tired.
I want to install kde desktop GUI on this but i couldnt find packages for kde
somebody help me with package and installing commands(new to CLI)If you want to install a desktop by default, I'd suggest downloading the live CD and installing from it as it'll give you exactly the solaris-desktop package set, and do so more quickly than the two-step process you've gone through in this case.
Running your own repository can be useful if you're going to deploy a lot of Solaris instances. -

Hi, I'm having a problem with the console in Solaris 7. I can open a session in terminal mode but I can't open a session in graphic mode. When I write the login and press the button, the screen is blocked and I have to kill the process from a remote session. I think any graphic library could be damaged but, which one?
Do you know how to resolve this problem?

I changed both memory and the hard drive but I still have the same problem. Can anyone please tell me what the problem might be or what remedial step I should take to install Solaris 10 on R31?
ThanksDid you try install check CD before the installation?
I think that there might be two main reasons:
1. Your computer is not supported
2. Hard drive may need to be formated to FAT32 or UFS
