Constraining OWB to specific nodes of RAC install

Hello all,
I was wondering if anyone has installed OWB 10.2 on a RAC environment and has successfully constrained OWB to run on one specified node in the cluster?
If so, is there some documentation that you can share on what to avoid and any setup / configuration that needs to be done before, during and after the install. Likewise, assuming that OWB is active on node 1 what is involved in transferring the processing to node 2 (NOT a fail over situation) so that node 1 can be shut down and have scheduled maintenance activities performed?

As far as the repository assistant in concerned, you do need to run it on all nodes. The first time you run the repository asst against the first node, it is used create the repository and other Builder users. Subsequently, the next time you run the repository asst it is to register the other nodes. When you run it a second time, select the Advanced setup and you will then see the option to register the other nodes. <Something you would not have seen the first time>.
That small detail drove us nuts because we were expecting to register all nodes at the same time the first time we ran the asst. Registering all subsequent nodes was not possible until after successfully creating the repository in our db.
Did you register the other nodes? I tend to think that registering the other nodes with OWB is not optional. Although we designated only 1 node to run our <owb_srvc>, all other nodes were registered during the install.
You don't mention why you are trying to limit OWB to one node only. For us, it was a way to test the behavior of OWB and the jobs we had scheduled. There was also the fact that we had an issue with signing on to Design Ctr using the net service name. So instead of using the net service name we would sign to one particular node. That in itself is a completely different subject because how you sign in to the Design Ctr appears to affect other aspects of the Design Ctr.
By the way, can you post he Java errors you mention? We too had several along the way.

Is there a way to Pin dbms_cube.build parallel jobs to specific node on RAC.Currently the job with say parallelism of 10 spans over all nodes of RAC.
IS there a way to control it so the child jobs runs on subset of nodes. Unable to see how we can tie job classes and services with dbms_cube.build .
Any suggestions will be hugely appreciated.

Used undocumented JOB_CLASS and it seems to working fine.

RAC Instalation Problem (shared accross all the nodes in the cluster)

I am trying for installing Oracle 10.2.0 RAC on Redhat 4.7

All steps successfully completed on all nodes (rac1,rac2) every thing is okey for each node
on single node rac instalation successfull.
when i try to install on two nodes
on specify Oracle Cluster Registry (OCR) location showing error
the location /nfsmounta/crs.configuration is not shared accross all the nodes in the cluster. Specify a shared raw partation or cluster file system file that is visible by the same name on all nodes of the cluster.
I create shared disks on all nodes as:
1 First we need to set up some NFS shares. Create shared disks on NAS or a third server if you have one available. Otherwise create the following directories on the RAC1 node.
mkdir /nfssharea
mkdir /nfsshareb
2. Add the following lines to the /etc/exports file. (edit /etc/exports)
/nfssharea *(rw,sync,no_wdelay,insecure_locks,no_root_squash)
/nfsshareb *(rw,sync,no_wdelay,insecure_locks,no_root_squash)
3. Run the following command to export the NFS shares.
chkconfig nfs on
service nfs restart
4. On both RAC1 and RAC2 create some mount points to mount the NFS shares to.
mkdir /nfsmounta
mkdir /nfsmountb
5. Add the following lines to the "/etc/fstab" file. The mount options are suggestions from Kevin Closson.
nas:/nfssharea /nfsmounta nfs rw,bg,hard,nointr,tcp,vers=3,timeo=300,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,actimeo=0 0 0

6. Mount the NFS shares on both servers.

I think you did not really mount it on the second server. what is the output of 'ls /nfsmounta'.
step 6 should be 'mount /nfsmounta', not 'mount 1'. I also don't know if simply creating a zero-size file is sufficient for ocr (i have always used raw devices, not nfs for this)

Help needed in deleting nodes from RAC database

Our DB is 10g RAC database and the servers are Window 2003 server. Initially the database was configured to have 4 nodes. For some reason we stopped the instances in the first two nodes and the current database is running on node3 and node4. I queried the v$thread view and it shows 3 records. Thread 2 is closed and disabled. Thread 3 is open and public and thread 4 is open and private. Now we need to disconnect nodes 1 and 2 from RAC db and cluster ware (We use Oracle cluster ware) and plan to use those two servers for other purposes. Although I read through the Oracle doc regarding deleting node from RAC “11 Adding and Deleting Nodes and Instances on Windows-Based Systems” and wrote down the steps we need to take but I am still not comfortable in doing it since it is production env and we don’t have any dev env to practice those steps. So I would like to borrow your experiences and your lessons learned while you were doing those. Please share your thoughts and insights with us.

what's your full version? I can warn about specific issues in 10.1.0.3 and 10.2.0.1 - for example, in some cases (depending on how the listener was configured), it will be impossible to delete the listener for the deleted node. Known bug.
To avoid many many known bugs, you may want to upgrade to at least 10.2.0.2 before removing a node (from my experience, this is the first stable RAC version).
In any case, deleting a node is a rather delicate process. I really really recommend practicing. Take any pc/laptop, install VMWARE, define two virtual machines, install RAC and remove one node. It will take you an extra day or two, and could save your production.

R12 with 2 node 10g RAC is not updating with autoconfig correctly.

[b]Migrating the DB-Tier (DB and CM) to Two node non RAC cluster[/b]

The current set-up of our E-business suite is a two node install:-
The DB Tier (Database and Concurrent Manager) on one node
The Apps Tier (Forms /Web Server) on another node.
For the HA solution (NON ORACLE RAC) we are planning to:-
Move the DB Tier (Database and Concurrent Manager) to a three node hardware sun cluster managed by veritas cluster manager (NOT ORACLE RAC). We need to know will the Database Tier (Database and Concurrent Manager) work on Hardware cluster node and will it support COLD FAILOVER from one Node to another. We know the database on its own would be fine with a cold failover because we have tested the database cold failover on the three node cluster for non E-business suite database. But here we have the added thing of the Concurrent manger sitting on the node along with the Database on the DB Tier.
The Apps Tier (Forms / Web server) will be put on a separate set of server using Load balances etc.
Has anybody implemented similar HA set-up and will this planned set-up work or are there any issues with this.

Yes, you can do the cold failover the database and all the 11i services also.
1. In the concurrent manager service
== when you failover the concurrent manager do the following things before failover.
create the listener/tnsnames files which includes the new hostname and keep it with the veritas failover service. i mean, when you failover, these files should replace the existing files, before the existing files should backedup. and create a script to change the hostname,logfile_hostname,outfile_hostname in fnd_concurent_processes table.
add the nodes in the install->nodes navigation
do the failover manually and check the listener files are properly pinging using tnsping. and start the concurrent manager.
so tatally, you have to prepare two sql scripts
one for change the hostname from node b to node a
one for node a to node b.
and 2 listener + 2 tnsnames files which contains the seperate hostname accordingly.
use the adcmctl.sh top stop and start
finally, create a shell script to kill the sysmgr for the current managers when the manager takes long time to shutdown. before run the kill script, wait for 5 mts atleast.
I done the same scenario many times, with veritas failover service with 2 sun v880 servers.

What does choosing interface as public or private during rac install mean?

What does choosing interface as public or private during rac install mean? You see the option on the OUI screen in the step after adding nodes on which you need the install.

Public: Is the interfacce where the connection to the db is done (user, application server etc).
Private: Used for communication between the nodes in the cluster and is done by the instances. No one should be able to connect via this interface.

Can anyone give idea that what's the maximum distance allowed between nodes in RAC.We're planning to install 10g RAC on Solaris and we've two sites.Distance between these sites is 12 KM's.

RAC Install

We are in the process of RAC install. The Oracle requirements state that a crossover cable cannot be used for the private network. The requirement states that each server must be cabled through a switch (1GB port each) and then separated on a private VLAN. It creates actually 2 more points of failure and I am curious as to why it is necessary?
Does anyone have a technical explanation, other than Oracle requires it?

1GB switch requirement is to have a stable and fast network connection for the cluster interconnect.
The interconnect will be used to all the critical messages and heart beats packets between the nodes. So any delay or drop of packets int he interconnect could cause performance issues or node evictions in the cluster.
You can go for redundancy at the hardware level to avoid a single point of failure.

Verification of steps to convert Single Node to RAC

I have a single node Oracle E-Biz 12.1.3 Installation.
We plan to convert this to a dual node RAC install and I wanted to run by the steps to perform this AND clone over the current production system to the new RAC system
(note this will not be using ASM - but will be based on NetApp NFS)
1. Install GRID 11.2.0.3
- installed acorss two nodes, Binaries can be shared
- voting disks / cluster rigistry MUST be shared
2. Install Database Software for RAC
- Binaries cannot be shared and must be installed on each node independently
3. Configure the GRID for database (database / listeners)
4. Clone over the stand alone system (clone database as RAC)
I will be using SCAN - and therefore would expect all the web services / concurrent manager nodes to point to the SCAN hostname as opposed to individual host names,
Are there any decent technical notes out there that will help please?
Is there any HUGE miss I have made here

I belive googling "single node to RAC" should give you a lot of articles and you can select any article based on your source database version and new version (11.2).
Since it is EBS database, probabl posting question on EBS forums will give you answer faster because you will find a lot of apps DBAs who would already have done this.

Hi,
Is there a "elegant" way to make blink a treeview node?
I am thinking to use a timer with the collection of nodes that I want to make the blink effect, and update the icon ...

Hi,
You can develop your custom control for this purpose. The logic you mentioned was correct. Here is a sample control that I developed by the logic you mentioned.

just show me how to use BlinkingTreeView class. i will have tree view which will have few node and few nodes may have few child nodes. now how to achieve by this class BlinkingTreeView and show me how to blink few specific node not all. thanks

better to come with code. first populate tree view with some dummy node this way

How to expand a tree at a specific node/item?

Hi,
we have a tree and the nodes/items were binded to context with this code
lo_nd_nvccmp = wd_context->get_child_node( name = wd_this->wdctx_nvccmp ).
lo_nd_tree = lo_nd_nvccmp->get_child_node( name = wd_this->wdctx_tree ).
lo_el_tree = lo_nd_tree->bind_structure( new_item = ls_tree set_initial_elements = abap_false ).
We want that the tree is expanded at a specific node/item?
The structure has the field is_expanded of type WDY_BOOLEAN. I think that if the field of the right structure is 'X' then the tree should expanded. How can we find the right structure in the context and change this field to 'X'?

Oh, apparently if you try that call right after you create
the Tree, it will throw a null reference exception. That might
count as a bug in the flex api...
If you create a Tree, and give it's dataProvider some xml
data, and then add it to the stage (addChild), and then you call
expandItem or expandChildrenOf() right after, you will get a null
object exception. You have to wait... for something. I don't know
what.
I even tried calling _tree.invalidateList() before the
expandItem, but it will still throw the error...
I wonder what the Tree needs to wait for? Is this a bug for
Adobe to fix?

ASM instances on 2 node Oracle RAC 10g r2 on Red Hat 4 u1

Hi all
I'm experiencing a problem in configuring diskgroups under +ASM instances on a two node Oracle RAC.
I followed the official guide and also official documents from metalink site, but i'm stuck with the visibility of asm disks.
I created fake disks on nfs with Netapp certified storage binding them to block device with the usual trick "losetup /dev/loopX /nfs/disk1 " ,
run "oracleasm createdisk DISKX /dev/loopX" on one node and
"oracleasm scandisks" on the other one.
With "oracleasm listdisks" i can see the disks at OS level in both nodes , but , when i try to create and mount diskgroup in the ASM instances , on the instance on which i create the diskgroup all is well, but the other one doesn't see the disks at all, and diskgroup mount fails with :
ERROR: no PST quorum in group 1: required 2, found 0
Tue Sep 20 16:22:32 2005
NOTE: cache dismounting group 1/0x6F88595E (DG1)
NOTE: dbwr not being msg'd to dismount
ERROR: diskgroup DG1 was not mounted
any help would be appreciated

Error when adding a new node to RAC 10g

Hi all,
I have a RAC 10g environment test in Linux Red Hat Umbreakble 5 with two nodes. This RAC is fine on 2 nodes.
I want to add a new node (rac3) of the following way:
- The node 1 (rac1) is started and the instance ORCL1 is online.
- The node 2 (rac2) is offline. i.e the machine is off.
- The node 3 (rac3). The machine is on and already configured
So that when I execute the CRS_home\oui\bin\addnode.bat on node 1 and put the information of node 3 (Public node name, Private node name, Virtual host name) and press next I get the following message:
OUI-35000: Fatal cluster error encountered (PRKC-1071 Nodes rac2 did not respond to ping in 30 seconds) - Sure: The machine is off;
My question is: Can´t I add a new node on RAC if a node is off ?
