Converting 16:9 footage to 4:3 in FCP

Hi
I have been given some footage that has been shot in a mini DV cam using the 16:9 ratio. Ineed to integrate the footage into a sequence that has been shot in 4:3. I'm not sure how to get FCP to change the ratio. The widescreen setting just letterboxes the image rather than changes the ratio and exporting the footage as anamorphic does n't seem to make a difference?
Any thoughts anyone?
Thanks in advance!

Hi Bob
In FCP, I'm not your answer guy. But Matti Haveri helped me with this issue a while back. I used MPEG Streamclip to make the conversion. I was really happy with it. If other posts dont't yield any results, try the MPEG conversion and import the file to your editor.

  • Best approach to convert HD camcorder footage to blue-ray (and archive)

I have a Canon Vixia HV30 camcorder that I have used to take HD footage.  I would like to archive the tapes' raw footage (for backup purposes) and also burn a blue-ray for each tape.  Prior to the Canon (and switching to Macs) I had been using Studio on a Windows system to do the same for footage from a standard def Sony camcorder.  Despite reading through the material on this forum and elsewhere I am confused about a couple of items and am hoping someone can help me understand how to archive and burn the camroder footage to BD easily.
Coming from the Windows environment, I was used to Studio taking raw footage and converting the entire tape to one .avi file that I could then edit in a baisc manner (trim, add menus, add transitions, add chapters, etc. but not adding other audio, etc.) and burn...all in Studio.  The Windows desktop I had been using for standard def is not powerful enough for HD (it's from 2004) so I have to explore other options.
I have a MacBook Pro with a 2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo process and 4 GB memory and am using Mac OS X 10.6.8.  I also have iMovie 08 (7.1.4 [585]) and Toast Titanium Pro with the HD/BD plug in (11.0.04).  Toast will not recognize the Canon camcorder connected using the Firewire 400 connection (but will recognize the Sony).  So I have used iMovie to download the camcorder footage to my MBP in HD (full quality).
    Here are my questions:
    1.  when downloading, it appears that iMovie does not retain the raw/same format as used by the Canon but converts it to something called Apple Intermediate Codecc.  Does this converstion affect the quality of the footage?  I do not want to use the convered material as archival material if it's already been converted once.
    2.  If the answer to # 1 is yes, iMovie converts the raw footage, is there another program that I can use in a Mac-environment that will simply download the footage in it's original format?
    3.  iMovie also splits up the footage into clips vs. showing one file and I cannot combine the clips into one clip (to be analogous to the workflow I have been used to in Studio).  Is there a way to do so?  Short of backing up my entire laptop (which I do), how can I extract the original footage from iMovie and copy it for archiving on a NAS drive?
    4.  Where is the best "place"/approach to perform basic editing (adding menu, adding chapters for different sections of the disc, etc.) on the footage?
    5.  If the answer to #4 is iMovie, would I then simply burn the iMovie project in Toast to Blue-ray?
I had thought achieving my goals would have been easy in a Mac environment (like it is for everything else) but am surprised to find it so difficult compared to how easy it was in Studio.  (Am I really better off getting a lower-end Windows 7 desktop and upgrading Studio and keep that just for converting our HD camcorder tapes to blue-ray?  I would rather not do so of course.)
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Calbe and AppleMan1958
Thanks for the replies.  Based on your replies, I think I can stay in the Mac-environment.
1 and 2.  I cannot archive as AppleMan1958 suggested to keep the original without conversion because the footage is HDV 1080i.  I understand however that iMovie will import and convert using a lossles codec.  (The camera is tape-based and doesn't show up in Finder.)
    3.  Having archived copy (if there is software that will let me do so for HDV) will negate the need to find the iMovie "version" but if necessary can do so directly.
    4.  One follow-up questions...if I use iMovies, do I simply use the project or the actual movie for purposes of burning to disc?
    5.  I agree Calbe...it's different so I'm thinking it's difficult.  I am sure I'll get the hang of it once I better understand how the flow works from camera to disc!
AppleMan1958, is there another consumer level app that you can recommend that I can use for archiving HDV?
    Thanks for the quick replies.

  • Problem importing footage from Canon XF305 into fcp

I have footage from a card having recorded on a Canon XF305. I literally dragged and dropped card onto my desktop making sure not to change any file names. I am now trying to import this footage from my desktop into fcp. I have downloaded the canon fcp plugin but everytime I try to import the footage using the canon plugin preferences I get an error message which reads... "AA0229" contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media. Can anyone help me??

    Hi there,
I've had no joy with this. Have tried everything. Just can't get footage into fcp any way I try. I have downloaded the plugin but I still get the same error message. "AA0229" contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media.
My work flow is as follows.
Open final cut pro. Go to log and transfer. Go to preferences within the log and transfer window and click on Canon XF plugin. Then go to import. Click on file on my desktop which is labeled as CLIPS001. Then error message comes up.
Memory card was dropped directly onto my laptop and onto a back up drive without changing any file names. Was thinking this would be straight forward.
Any help will be hugely appreciated. Am I missing something simple?

  • Converting 7D camera footage to Apple Pro Res 422 HQ

I shot footage with the Canon 7D. I brought the footage to Compressor (latest version as part of Final Cut Studio). I am transcoding the footage to Apple Pro Res 422 HQ for editing in Final Cut Pro 7.
A few clips have been transcoded. I open up the original file and the Pro Res HQ file and compare them side by side on my Mac Book Pro. I would like to attach the screenshot but don't think I can do it that here. Anyway, the Pro Res clip is slightly smaller when opened with Quicktime 7 and 10. Also, the colors seem to be darker and the clip a lot muddier than before.
Has anyone had any experience with this? Thanks.

My clips do experience a slight color shift but nothing nominal. However, I have no problems converting my files using the preset and opening them up in FCP 7. When I open them in QTX they appear the same size as their original. Have you checked the inspector pane on your MBP? I have had issues where QTX will not open a video full size due to screen resolution limitations and would always downsize instead. That could be your issue since the MBP cannot display a 1080p file at full resolution.

  • Trying to convert ProRes 4444 footage

Hi. I have footage on my imac G5 non-Intel which is Prores 4444. I don't have Final Cut. Two questions: 1) is there a way to convert the Prores ftge to a format that can be edited in my imovie? Would anyone know what converter to use? 2) If I get Final Cut express, will it handle the ProRes 4444 footage, and also, is the Final Express color correction good enough to do straight ahead color correction? Much appreciated.

    # 1) yes, try the new video converter (I tried it, special feature of it is to support Apple ProRes Codec, HDV Codec, Avid DNxHD Codec, Apple Intermediate codec, etc.)
for importing the converted video to iMovie, just use a QuickTime format AIC(Apple Intermediate codec)

  • Will "Conform to Sequence" convert my SD footage to HD?

    Hi there,
This is going to sound REALLY stupid, but in this age where everything is being exported in HD, I still get confused.
I am using SD footage in an HD timeline. I have conformed the SD footage to fit the timeline. It looks great. There are pillarboxes on the side and everything. But does this mean my footage is in HD? Is there another step in the conversion process that I'm missing?
    Thanks in advance!

Using FCP to convert SD to HD is the worse way you can go.  It really is.  The scaling engine is bad.  The best way, convert with a Terranex or Snell Wilcox converter...tape to tape or via tapeless transfer.  Next, capture a tape with an IO device that has a hardware scaler in it, like AJA Kona or Matrox MXO2.  After that, After Effects does a great job.  Then Compressor.
That is, if you want your SD to look decent.  It will never suddenly be HD...but for good looking SD upconverts, that's the list of what is best on down.

  • Does converted MTS 24p footage also require "pulldown" process?

    Hi.
I am using a Canon HF20 camcorder. The files are MTS. I was shooting in 24p mode. I have FCP 6, which apparently cannot handle MTS media. So I found a way to convert the files to HDV (or AIC) via an application called Clipwrap. My question is: Must I also deal with the extra-frame/pulldown problem (endemic to usual 24p footage) of the new clip, or has that been taken care of in the conversion process? If not, is there a way to tackle both these issues (MTS conversion, pulldown) in one fell swoop?
    Thanks,
    Marc

you can usually drop 24p material into a 29.97 fps timeline without any issues EXCEPT that fcp does not add pulldown in the best way.  If I remember correctly, fcp just repeats the 4th frame.  This may or may not be objectionable when you view it.  You can add pulldown with full flexibility in After Effects.  I don't imagine it would be a big deal to do this after you've locked picture.
My mantra is 'TEST YOUR WORKFLOW" from soup to nuts (ingest to output in delivery format).  I sometimes make DP's, producers, etc crazy, but better them than me.
And yeah, sometimes it is just simpler to shoot 29.97.  But most importantly is what is your end use.  i recently finished a doc that had to be output to a digital cinema package for academy award consideration.  The specs demanded 24 fps (not 24p aka 23.976).  My sources were all over the place.  Landed up using compressor to change the frame rate of all material to 23.986 and then the post house doing the dcp output conformed to 24.

  • How to convert 32 fps footage to 24 fps for slowmotion effect in premiere pro cs3?

    Hi there,
Can somebody give me any advice on this?
Is there something specific i need to adjust in the preset? or can i just richt-click on the footage in the timeline and convert it to 24fps?
Is it best to always shoot at a higher frame rate then 24fps..lets say for this particular clip and subject 32fps?
i'm doing this for a videoclip and we thought that such an effect would be nice during the choris of the song.
I hope somebody can give me some advice on this. Thanks in advance for the effort. much appreciated.
    grts. Tristan

    @Dan Isaacs
tnx for your reply: reason why shooting at 32fps is because the audio on the set has been speeded up with 133%. I thought it's best to stay in the same ratio in order to have the lips sync on the audio (this is in realtime)cuz when slowing down the footage to realtime speed the lips must be sync with the audio which is also in realtime speed
If I make sure that when slowingdown the footage in the project,it matches the realtime speed of the audio...,
does it matter at which frame rate I shoot?
    @Craig Howard
Well..I just got word of the rental company and there is a big chance that they have the panasonic HVX200 ready for me when i need it, SO i think that will be the one
So it will be as follow: shooting on a hvx200 at 32fps or if it doesnt really matter at 60fps for a better slowmo effect
of course i will shoot on High Def ;) and will need the p2 cards, after shooting I will capture/import the footage from the cards as you guys adviced me to do...
my main issue was thinkin I needed extra software for downconverting the framerate in order to get the slowmo effect, e.g.: cineform aspecthd
I think that i'm full circle now..or am i missing something?
    hehe..tnx again guys!

  • Converting h.264 footage for my 1080i60 timeline...

    Hi all...
I've got some footage from a GoPro Hero cam (H.264, 1920x1080) that I would like to add to my current sequence (HDV-1080i60) which is set up for footage my Canon XHA1S (captured as HDV Apple ProRes 422). The end result for all of this footage is for broadcast in HD on TV...
I'm using FCP 7. I used MPEG Streamclip to convert the H.264 footage, but I was unsure about a few of the settings for doing so:
1: I chose the option "Export to QT" & for the Compression I chose 'Apple ProRes 422' assuming this would be the best option since my other footage uses the same. Someone please correct me here if that's not so...
2: The Frame Rate is blank & I'm wondering if I should leave it blank or adjust it to 29.97, again to match footage from my Canon.
    3. Frame Size. I'm really at a loss here. First I was thinking I should adjust it to 1440x1080 to match the Canon footage, but then I'm worried about the quality of the footage & wonder if it's even necessary to change it from 1920x1080? AND then, if I do leave it @ 1920x1080, I have 3 options: '16:9', 'unscaled', or 'HDTV 1080i'.
4: (and last, I hope) "Interlaced Scaling" is checked & "Deinterlace Video" is unchecked. I'm not sure if this is Progressive or Interlaced footage. Anyone know how to find out & what the correct settings for those are?
    THANK YOU : )

Funny that you sent me those links, I actually read them both a few hours ago & that was what led me to use Streamclip for that footage in the first place. Certainly makes me feel better to have these settings confirmed by the original author (just realized that)! Small world : )
And in regards to the Reinterlace Chroma, since this footage came out nicely, I'm guessing the others will too since they are all from the same source (probably similar to your cam for the motorcycles). But what exactly does that setting do?

  • Converting PC video footage to edit on a mac?

I have been given some video footage that was downloaded onto a PC originally. Now I want to use it and edit it on iMovie, but it just shows the files up as grey, and it cannot access them.  How do I convert them so they are accessible on a mac?

Depending on your operating system and the video format:
Right click on the clip when in finder, see if at the bottom of the list of options there is one "encode video".
Click on that and see if you can convert it to something that you can use.

  • How can I convert my AVCHD footage to an easier high definition format to edit?

AVCHD UpShift, from NewBlue, convert AVCHD (hi-def MP4) to more standard HD-mpeg (hi-def MPEG .m2t), a format that is both more universally editable and which demands significantly less system resources.
    http://www.newbluefx.com/avchd-upshift.html
    The product sells for $49.95.
Another solution that will convert your AVCHD to formats more easily edited on a PC with no loss quality.
    http://www.shedworx.com/voltaichd
Note, of course, with any conversion, your output files will be much larger, so allow for that extra hard drive space.
    It sells for $34.99.
More information on the why's and how's of converting video for Premiere Elements can be found in my article "Converting Video for Premiere Elements", free from Muvipix.com.

A free converter that will convert AVCHD to Premiere Elements compatible hi-def MPEG2 is the Free AVCHD Converter, available from:
    http://www.koyotesoft.com
According tp Paul Scrivener, you should up the bit rate to 25000kb/s and convert, and it will export 1920x1080 MPEG2.
One downside is that, when you install it, it automatically downloads a search tool to your browser toolbar -- but it can easily be removed using Add/Remove Programs.
For easy editing of AVCHD and even conversion to standard DV-AVI, a great buy is Corel VideoStudio Pro X2. This editor/converter sells for $59.99.

  • Issues converting my h264 footage to AppleProRes 4442HQ

Hello everyone, I shot an interview with 2 HDMI lights an Actor and black background. I was very picky about setting the right color temperature in Kelvin degrees with a Sekonic color meter, I also adjusted the Canon 7D settings to make the recording less saturated and less contrasty in the picture style menu. Moreover, I checked everything during the shoot on a calibrated 24 inch monitor that I was using as big viewfinder trough the HDMI connection. Now that I need to convert every clip from H264 to AppleProRes 442 HQ for editing purpose I noticed that my final converted mov file is very different from what I shot. Let me explain, the black background was having a kind of pattern/texture that disappeared, the image is much more contrasty, the skin tone of the talent changed and overall everything is more dark. The only settings that I touched were: no sound, size 1920X1080 HD, 24 fps. Does anybody know if the check box on Automatic Gamma should be disabled? I kept it on Automatic as it is by default. There is a template of settings that I should use in this delicate phase? Thank you very much for your appreciated help.

As a monitor during production I used an HP Dreamcolorzx.
A computer display, not a standard NTSC broadcast quality monitor. It does claim to reproduce the full NTSC color gamut, but that does not necessarily make it broadcast quality. I'll wait for someone to chime in on that.
Right now I'm just using my apple laptop's 17 display (matte).
You should really check it on an external NTSC monitor before spending too much more time.
My MacBook Pro is not calibrated however when I play the two clips in QuickTime the h264 mov file is closer to what I shot, whereas the apple pro res one is like 2 stops darker and very saturated.
It's not recommended, but you can import the h.264 into FCP to compare the two files in FCP. Have you looked at them in FCP yet?
I chose to save as appleprores 442HQ and I understood why should not do it again, but that besides making the file heavier is not related to the main Issue that everything is darker with default settings.
    Probably correct.
Once again, how was the HP Dreamcolorz monitor calibrated on set?
Once again, how did you convert the files to ProRes?

  • Convert GoPro3 Silver footage to final cut X Yosemite?

What is the best download software for converting vis from goPro3 Silver to Final cut X running on Yosemite?

You probably don't want any third party conversion app.
When you import, check the Optimize Media box in the import settings dialog.
If you want a stand-alone app for reformatting media files, I would suggest MPEG Streamclip – a free download.

  • Workflow for converting SonyHD Cam footage via KonaLHe to DVCPro HD?

    Hi,
I've got a project starting tomorrow and the producer had to switch cameras the day before the shoot! They are now brining in Sony HDCam 1080psf 23.98 (don't know the camera). I've rented an HD Cam deck with SDI out (no FW). I have the Kona LHe so SDI input will be fine. The project is destined for digibeta 29.97 SD so I'm trying to figure out a good workflow for capture and editing. To keep file bandwidth down, I think DVCPro HD is a good solution, but I'm not sure where or how the conversion takes place using the Kona LHe and FCP. Do I set the Kona frame buffer to DVCPro HD 720p @ 23.98 and set capture settings the same in Final Cut? Or, as I have the internal RAID space, just capture native 1080, edit native, then convert the program to 29.97 window 16x9 at the end of the edit? Clarifications, recommendations and comments welcomed! Tnanks!

Conversion is done in FCP. But all you have to do is connect it to the Kona via HD SDI and set the capture settings in FCP. The signal coming in from the card is the full signal, you are just telling FCP in which format to save that signal as. And DVCPRO HD 1080p24 would be the setting. I doubt your internal RAID could handle uncompressed 1080p HD.
