Converting premitive data types into strings

Hello everybody,
I have a small doubt. Is it possible to convert all data types like int, boolean etc to strings. I know it is possible to convert them individually. But I would like to have it a common method to convert them all. Because I am reading the whole line, so it is taking as strings. I am unable to read their original data types, all are reading as strings.
Can anybody tell me how to solve this problem?

Thanx for your answers. But as I told you before I don't know the exact data type of those. Because I am reading whole file by using DataInputStream's readLine() method. It returns the whole line as String. If there are any integer or boolean etc, it converts them as strings. So I could not read the exact data type of them.
for example:
int a = 10;
boolean b = true;
String str = "The Values are" + a + b;
this code is in one file. If I read this file from another file, the line
String str = "The Values are" + a + b;
reads as a string, but I couldn�t get the 'a' as ineger and 'b' as boolean. it gives they are of strings.

Convert MS SQL server image data type into oracle clob

Hi all! I'm tryng to access to Microsoft SQL server with Oracle via ODBC. Oracle is not able to use the image data type of Microsoft SQL server. Do you know a way to convert this data type in an oracle format? The explicit casting converts image to long raw, but after the conversion Oracle is not able to manage these data type. Problem in using a structure with a field of data type 'RAW STRING'

I have written a ZBAPI that imports a structure which has 5 fields. I have defined this in the IMPORT tab of Tr.Code <SE37>. One of the field of this structure is of data type 'RAW STRING'.
When I try to activate this BAPI, I get an error message as follows:
Function Module ZBAPI_ADD_CONFIG_DNA
"ZDAMPER_CON_DNA" Must be a flat structure. You cannot use internal table
strings, references, or structures as components.
Where ZDAMPER_CON_DNA is the table name that I am using.
FOR TESTING PURPOSE, WHEN I CHANGE THE DATA TYPE FROM 'RAW STRING' TO JUST A CHAR OF LENGHT 5, IT WORKS FINE.
Here is the source code of the simple BAPI that i am trying to activate.

i am new to oracle with xml..
my aim is to convert a data set into a xml data and vice versa..
my work is as follows...
my query:
select rggpk,rggcode,rggname from ms_regiongeo
to convert a data set into a xml*

Need to convert long data type to varchar2

I need to convert a long datatype in an existing table to a
varchar2, in either another table or view. I have a 3rd party
application which needs to query the data in the long data type,
but it can "handle" the long.
What is the best way to do this? I tried to make a trigger, but
I must be missing something. Here is the trigger.

I tried to use the substr command on the comnt_txt in view but
received an invalid datatype error.

2) insert into clob_tab (select pkval,to_lob(long_col) from

3) use dbms_lob package to do string manipulation using

Determine data type of string field

I am trying to determine the data type of input strings in a data flow task. For each column in the input (all of which are strings) I want to sample X number of records, try to cast them as money, date, boolean, etc and if 100% of X records pass then
use the first data type that passes the test. I looked into row sample but this doesn't appear to be the right data flow task. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

You have two tasks: find the datatype by looking at X rows; cast all rows to the popular datatype.
What I use is the TryParse method that occurs on several datatypes in .Net (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/f02979c7(v=vs.110).aspx). It returns true if it parses
and false if it doesn't. I have used this in a profiling package that reads a CSV and stores counts of values that can be converted to different datatypes.
The second piece is trickier. If you can afford, I would add a second dataflow. The first dataflow looks at a sample of the data and determines the datatype. You assign that to a variable. Then the second one has a derived column that has
a set of derived columns, each with a formula like this:
@DataType == "Int"?(DT_I4)[Column]:NULL(DT_I4)

Store values of different data types into single database field

I have to store values of different data types(character, numeric, date, time, text, etc) into a single database field(Char 80). Then read the same values and display it into ABAP Webdynpro report.

concatenate a b c d into txt1.
write txt1.
var1 = txt1+0(1).

var3 = txt1+2(8).
var4 = txt1+8(8).
write: / var1,
       / var2,
       / var3,
       / var4.

Date (the Date type) + time (String type) == Calendar type

I need to convert a date date containing a pair of Date and Time to Calendar. The date is from the Date type and the time is from a String such as "10:30 AM". This pair of data is entered on UI by a user. And I use DateFormat to make the conversion. It seems to me that I have to use deprecated Date methods such as getYear(), getHour().
Any better approaches?

Well, the java.util.Date class represent a specific "point" in time, with second precision. So, once you have your semantically right Date instance, it's just a matter of creating a new Calendar, and calling setTime.
Or maybe you should just create a Calendar instance from the start, since that's what the user is entering.

How to coerce data types to strings in a SELECT statement?

ABAPers,
I need to coerce column outputs to strings in a SELECT statement. Here is a pseudo example:
select ConvertToString(count(*)) from MARA
On help.sap.com, I could not find enough information on the functions that are supported within SELECT statement. I would appreciate it if someone can enlighten me on how to achive this.
Note that my real problem is that I do not know the return type of the specified columns. The columns are passed as a user-specified parameter. As I do not know the column types, I am mandating that customers specify columns that return only string type data.

Convert to string wont be possible in the SELECT statement.
What you can do is use Field Symbols. This allows to assign data types dynamically.

How to migrate 'table' data type into oracle solution?

Say, I have following sample code in Sql Server:

what should I use in oracle to convert above code? I was thinking about nested table, but it seems not very suitable here. Any better solutions out there?

It's been a while since I've done any SQL Server development, but if I recall correctly, a table data type in Transact SQL is used for storing temporary result sets.
In your example, you seem to be temporaily storing the results of a query in a Transact SQL table, and then opening a cursor to iterate over the results.
In Oracle PL/SQL, there is usually no need to do this, just open a cursor:
create or replace procedure test_proc as
begin
for curs_rec in (select old_value, new_value from myTable) loop
... process each row ...
end loop;
end test_proc;
If you really want your results in an array which your code can iterate over, look into the BULK COLLECT clause of the SELECT statement:
create or replace procedure test_proc as
TYPE array_type IS TABLE of myTable%ROWTYPE INDEX BY BINARY_INTEGER;
my_array array_type;
begin
SELECT * BULK COLLECT INTO my_array FROM myTable;
for idx in my_array.FIRST..my_array.LAST loop

Note that I have not actually compiled the above code, so there may be syntax errors :)
Also, prior to 9i you can not BULK COLLECT into a table based on a rowtype (you need to created an array for each attribute).
SQL Server also allows function which return table types. This is similar to PL/SQL pipelined table functions (available in 9i and higher - see the PL/SQL guide), which can be used to materialize rows which can be processed like any other result set.
SQL Server also has a concept of temporary tables which is totally different than Oracle's temporary tables. SQL Server developers must often resort to using temporary tables in their stored procedures; in Oracle, this is rarely necessary.

How to write a data type into an excel file?

What I am trying to do is to get some data from MS SQL then write into an excel file.

There is no problem to write into an excel file, however, after all data is imported, excel sheet treats the the integers or dates as Text format. The funny part is, after I double click one of the cells with an integer value, that cell's format will be changed to integer, same thing happens with the date type.
I am wondering if there is any way I can write an integer or whatever type into an excel file, which excel can recognize their own types instead of Text format. Thank you so much in advance.
