Cpu speed is clocked down during heavy use (msi x79a-gd45) ?

Hi
I overclocked my cpu, intel i7 3930K, 32 gb ram win 7 on msi x79a-gd45
cpu base clock : 100
adjust cpu ratio 42
intel turbo disabled
dram freq @1600
cpu core temp 1.290
hyper thread enabled
Everything else is auto
This pc is running at 4.2 in general but when I do render type heavy cpu rendering cpu speed starts going down to 2900, they oscillate betwen 4200 and 2900/2700. I am trying to get it start around 4000. TO me it is kind of pointless that the cpu would clock down when I need them not too. I do not mind if they are clocked down when they are not in use.
I have 750 W with corsair hydro h60
I asked this issue before but I was not able to resolve. I am hoping that someone else might be able to help me out here .
thanks

Yes, with a Turbo OC on the Core Ratios (set them all to 44X) in CPU Features sub menu plus the CPU V. and CPU Ratio must both be set to Auto. EIST and C1E enabled. Enhanced Turbo enabled. Overspeed Protection disabled.
If the mainboard also has the VDroop option, then set it to 100%. Have you tried the CPU Ratio OC at 44X with the CPU V. in Auto already? If it is stable, then no need to try the Turbo method of OC. With CPU V. in Auto, you can enable EIST and C1E and get power saving features to work. CPU V. must be in Auto for the voltage to decrease at low use or idle (33C).
Hi  PirateDog
Thanks for your reply, very helpful
So I now have
Cpu base 100
ratio 44
EIST enabled (intel turbo disabled, enhanced turbo disabled)
Dram auto
Cpu Core V auto
C1E Enabled
C-State disabled
Cpu Phase Control Disabled
VDroop +%100
This setup seemed to push my average cpu temps by around 7C degrees, so I am around 64C if all are at max. I am not sure if this issue is from another place but worth mentioning. I am not sure if this is still in the good range. On the other hand this setup seems to lower my average idle temps couple degrees.
Before I was using
Cpu base 100
ratio 44 Cpu Core V auto
Dram 1600
and everything else was either disabled or set to auto
Any further recommendations?
thanks

  • MSI Z77 Mpower + 3770K cpu doesn't clock down

Hi MSI Guys, need your help :
my back-up rig is now on duty, but cpu does not clock down, in default cpu speed or overclocked cpu speed
MSI Control Center doesn't shows cpu clock down, core temp 1.0 RC4 either, CPU-Z 1-62.0 x64 the same, only real temp 3.70 does.
In bios every thing regarding cstates and power saving are enabled :
    RIG INFO:
    CPU: 3770K
    MAINB: MSI Z77 MPower
    RAM: Corsair Platinum 16GB 2400mhz
    VGA: 2XMSI Lightning GTX 680

Make sure in advanced, the min max cpu states are what you want them to be and if they are, try the newest beta. Looks like you have H53, it is up to: H57.
Also, after you flashed you bios last, did you re-installed the Intel ME drivers from Intel Downloads?
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=22092&keyword=management+engine&lang=eng
Edit: A clearing of the cmos may help as well. >>Clear CMOS Guide<<
i've update the bios as well, and made a correct clear cmos as you linked me to, and even updated those drivers as suggested, and nothing changes

Tried with CPU Phase Control 'Enabled'?
yes this too doesnt have any effect
just real temp 3.70 is reading the correct cpu speed, i went on another os installed on my system and no program reads cpu clock down & turbo mode speeds, only Real Temp 3.70 does.
    why? what is wrong now?

  • Purchased the Sony Tablet in June 2012, started to shut down during regular use (blank screen, swirl

I am a long time Sony customer… mostly TVs and other entertainment items.
Purchased the Sony Tablet in June 2012, started to shut down during regular use (blank screen, swirly lights comes on, and soft reset required) in September 2012.
December 2012, issue started to take place more frequent (to the point it was too annoying).
Sent the tablet in for repair before X-Mas and just got it back from the TX repair center yesterday (1/14/13).
    They replaced the motherboard.
1/15/13, 11:49AM, the same issue happened.
I am asked to mail it in again, so they can fix the issue.
I like Sony products, but this is something new for me.
I like to know if this is common for the tablet, please share story.
    My concerns are:
They replaced the motherboard (that is pretty much the core of the tablet!)
What do I do when my warranty expires in June 2013 and the issue is still there?

I and many others have the same issue. You can an find some links to reported issues in my thread.
Sony has yet to acknowledge the issue and define whether it is software or hardware based. This lack of communication is very disheartening.

  • Rendering speed is slowing down during process, almost up to freeze

    Hello there!
First of all, I'm a new person to After Effects. I bet I just doing something wrong, but anyway I would like to ask an advice how to fix my issue because googling such subject won't solve it.
    The point is following:
I rendering 120-minutes long video for YouTube. It almost static with no effects, just with a few simple fade-in/out transitions on couple of layers. You can find an example of such video on YouTube by this link: Daniel Lesden - Rave Podcast 056: guest mix NitroDrop (Israel) - YouTube (for some reason, specifically this video was rendered successfully previously).
Process is going very well at first, 1 minute of playback rendering for about 30 seconds, so first hour of the video rendering for 30 minutes.
The problem starts at about 70% of overall progress: it start to slowing down, and then goes to 1 frame rendering for 1 second. As you can imagine, it's a pain for such long videos, it will take a days to finish last 20-30%.
Composition and render settings are following:
    Size: 1280 x 720 px
    FPS: 30
    Format: Quicktime
Codec: ProRes 422. I've also tried: Animation, Photo JPEG, another ProRes and even H.264, but outcome was the same.
    Output module settings screenshot:
    Multi-processing settings:
On this point I have to say that I've tried many different options with amount of CPU, RAM or with Multi-processing option turned off completely, but in the end it all was the same.
After Effects version: CC 2014 (still on trial version, but it shouldn't be a problem since Adobe don't have any limitations for trial versions as far as I know).
    Computer and OS information:
Any advices please? I'll very appreciate every possible solutions.

"open AE preferences>General then move to the bottom tab and set AE to purge every 10 frames or so"
    — I've set this parameter to 10 as suggested, and here are the last render queue results:
First 60-minutes video rendered superb good for 1 hour 17 minutes.
Second 120-minutes video goes really badly: it took 8 hours to render about quarter due to error. Here is what I found in the error log: "There is an error in background rendering so switching to foreground rendering after 246 frames completed out of total 216000 frames. (26  ::  142)".
Later I've tried to render second video again, and it was great almost till finish: 1 hour 45 minutes has been rendered for less than an hour. But then it suddenly slowed down (as described in the original post), so I had to stop it. I installed Memory Dig and "optimized" memory before rendering and once during process, but it didn't help. In the end I just rendered last 15 minutes of the video (with no issues) and just merged it into 120-minutes long file using Video Joiner. Pretty sad method, although.
On a third attempt everything was fine until rendering stops by a new error in popup window: "After Effects error: internal verification failure, sorry! {could not find itemframe we just now checked in}".
So the original problem still wasn't solved yet unfortunately.

  • CPU speed up and down in Hardware Monitor...is this normal?

Just downloaded the newest version of Hardware Monitor, and the CPU graph is bouncing constantly between 2000 and 2667 mHz. Is this normal?
None of the temperatures shown seem abnormal...CPU cores are all between 30 and 33 degrees C, the stock 512mb RAM modules are the hottest things at 53-55C.

Basically the Core 2 series processors do tend to save a considerable amount of wattage by simple stepping down a little. I have to say that it's quite remarkable given it's only a 667MHz clock speed drop rather than the usual halving to get the same power savings.

  • Is your powerbook warm during heavy use?

When I am using graphic intensive programs on my Powerbook, it used to get fairly warm. Not too, warm, but right on the edge of being alarming...
I just got the Nexus TDD-3000 Heat Pipe Laptop cooler, and it is awesome!
    Check the link:
    http://www.nexustek.nl/tdd3000.htm
It works great! At first I was worried cause the PBook is wider than the tray (3/4" on each side overhangs) but this allows for the bottom of the Book to be in direct contact with the tray. Using the same applications (mainly WoW, but also some photoshop and dreamweaver), the computer is noticeably cooler! I was skeptical, but this thing is great. No power, no addional noise, and I am no longer worried or uncomfortable using my book.
My only complaint is that the Book can slide very easily on the tray, but I'm installing some rubber bumpers on the front edge to keep the book from moving around, and that should take care of it.
For all you that have Powerbooks running hot, I highly recommend it.

They ALL get hot especially near the CPU. There are oodles of these coolers, stand-offs etc. Actually an aluminum cookie sheet bigger than the PB would work quite well and tends to be a lot less money. Any good conducting metal heat sink will help.

  • Xperia Tablet S shuts off during video and heavy use

    Hello Sony Team,
Many users are currently experiencing random power downs during heavy use of the Sony Xperia Tablet S.  Typically this is seen with You Tube, multiple webpage surfing, and Flash playback.
Typically video corruption occurs just before this tablet powers down as seen in this user's youtube video:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tqf6RFrYTQQ
We have all tried the following:
    factory resets
    warranty service replacements
    ensured all updates are installed
We would love to see an offical acknowledgement of the issue and more importantly a commitment to fix the issue!
Listed below are links to other people reporting the same issue including a 5 page thread on your own Sony Support UK forum:
    http://www.sony.co.uk/discussions/message/814213

Until this gets addressed or even acknowlegded, we are owners of a $4-500 nightmare.  I really hope you guys can step up you support and impress us.
P.S. Why is there no support option on the Sony.ca website for the newer Xperia Tablet S?  I cannot even select that model.
    Regards,

  • Starting up stops at "Late CPU Initialization" (i7-3930K + X79A-GD45)

    Hi Alll!
I bought an I7-3930K CPU and an MSI X79A-GD45 motherboard. It doesn't work
The starting up process fails. It not reaches the phase when monitor is working, it always restarts in loop.  Before restarting the debug LED panel shows "67" for 10 seconds. User Guide says "67" is "LATE CPU INITIALIZATION".
I've tried several RAM configuration (only 1 slot, 1 and 3, all 4, ) with two different sets of RAMs. I took the mainboard out of the chasis to exclude short circuit problems.
I think the BIOS version could be a problem, but I dont know the version of my mobo's BIOS because ther is no any sticker on the board wich shows the version number. Could somebody tell me how I can know the BIOS version without any screen informaitons? Does anybody have the same problem?
    Thanks in advance!

yes that date code is the 7th of October 2011 and you need a BIOS update to 19th of January 2012 or later to support the CPU you have!
yes that's a typo you need to update the the BIOS for your Sandy bridge E processor. I guess Xmad just slipped there a little and wrote it down wrong as it should have been before not after.
so to tell you what to do you need a low end LGA2011 CPU or you will have to take the board to a shop that has a SPI flash programmer to flash the BIOS chip to get the CPU working on your board without issue. its your choice (possible a shop may be able to install a CPU that's supported and update the BIOS chip for you to get that 3930K working on the board for a fee?)

  • System rebooting during heavy cpu tasks

I have a K7N2 (MS-6570) board with 1GB ram using 2 mushkin PC2700 ram sticks running win2k with the latest bios and nvidia drivers.
When I try to perform intensive CPU tasks such as running the united devices distributed program or the distributed.net applications, render images or even build large source code modules the system reboots with no warning.
Occasionally I'll play a game and in the middle of it the system hangs and then claims I've executed invalid instructions and windows kernal gets corrupted and then reboots.
During rendering I get random STOP 0x errors, never the same one twice.
The timings are at 166fsb, memory at 1:1 (333mhz) clock at 12x5 CPU speed at 2088 mhz.
If I use auto-defaults memory timings goes to 7-3-3-2.5 but the mushkin website claims the ram should be at 2-2-2 so I set it that way and still I get wierd errors.
This is the 6th memory pair I've tried so far, could I possibly have a bum board or processor instead?
Is there a "safe" memory timing I can try to see if its the ram or my system itself thats bad.  I'm close to giving up on this board and going the intel route.

    Whew.
I'm glad you had the spare supply; I usually recommend "trying before buying" anything, unless, of course, one has lots of cash to blow.
I also wanted to tell you that, if your 2.03 driver method doesn't work, try this:
Go to Start, Run, type in MSCONFIG, press Enter, press the Services tab, check the Hide All Microsoft Services box, press the Disable All button, select the Startup tab, press the Disable All button, Apply, OK, and Restart.
After the reboot, try your games again, and see what happens. If everything's ok, then go back and enable the startup services one at a time, and try playing again until you find the offending service. If all is ok, do the same with the Services tab, until you find the offending Service.
(I spent hours online with Microsoft on this a couple of months ago, and this method found that the intermittent crashing problem was caused by one of the nVidia services.)
So far, I have had four causes of this type of problem (BSOD, spontaneous reboot, freezing):
    1) Corrupted OS/driver
    2) Poor power
    3) Bad RAM
    4) Startup Service
Of course, #1 and #4 don't cost anything but time and effort to fix, and should be tried first, unless anything is grossly wrong, like an underrated supply, and/or ram which won't pass memtest, which one should replace anyway. (I've got a lifetime warranty on the RAM, and only had to return it for replacement.) So the only thing that cost me to repair this problem completely was the replacement of the PSU, and it was the very last thing I did.
Were I to do it over again, I would have replaced the PSU before I actually put the replacement RAM in, because I risked damaging the new RAM (and the old stick too) with my old 300W supply. (However, I was on a severe cost restriction which influenced my decision, making the "free fixes" the priority.)
    Hope this helps.

  • Lenovo Helix i7 CPU cpu clock down after Bios 1.14

    Hi all.
I have about 25 Lenovo Helix, and I must admit that I'm a little angry - I have found out that after bios 1.14, then run the only maximum 2.5 GHz, whereas before it ran 3.0GHz - not that I have purchased. It's an easy solution to the heat, just to clock the CPU down.
Is there anyone who can help me, what can I do? Some have bios 1.10 to lie, it works with the real speed. You can easily feel the difference.
    Thank you

Use a program like coretemp and after executing the program hit F4 or from the menus select logging. Run some processor intensive applications, either software (AutoCAD, hd video, etc.) or benchmark such as (IBT, Ortho, etc.) then review or post the csv here.
The multiplier is a ratio of the cpu clock rate and front side bus. For instance, with the Helix the fsb is just under/around 100mhz. The clock will either throttle down to 8x and speed up to 32x, resulting in cpu speeds between 800mhz to 3.2Ghz, respectively.

  • Re: helix CPU speed stuck at low clock speed

Admin edit - Reorganizing this thread slightly as we are actively investigating the symptoms being discussed here.  Several different low end clock speeds of 600-800mhz are being reported capped under a variety of circumstances - sometimes cold boot, sometimes after suspend / resume or dock / undock
    motku wrote:
Same here (helix ci7), after suspend and wakeup when CPU slows down ist get stuck at 750MHz and dose not recover untill reboot.
Before the BIOS update I could unplug the AC adapter and work with full speed on battery.
I have the exact same issue.  It is quite annoying.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Mark, theres more.
I found a "pseudo  workaround" of this problem and hope this could lead to the real workaround.
What helped - installing win7, lenovo power manager, change power plan to other and change back to previous)
I tried to do some research and what i found:
In normal Lenovo power manager wheres 2 options in power plan:
System perfomance (Maximum turbo, Turbo, Balanced, Low) (lets call it PERF) and Optimise fan control to (Maximize perfomance, Balance all parameters) (lets call it FCNTL.
In theory FCNTL must control only fans, like table of data cpu temperature/fan speed. But in reality it affects CPU speed.
Only way to make PC always select speed from lowest to highest is to set PERF=Maximum turbo or Turbo, FCNTL=Maximize perfomance.
Lets go through options how they really works in practice:
    PERF
Maximum turbo and Turbo are equal, means highest speed for CPU with turbo boost. The level of turbo bust is always maximum, Turbo didnt mean "slow turbo boost".
Low - cpu always at lowest speed 800mhz - thats ok.
Balanced - this option works a little crazy. In some situations it means "maximum cpu till 63C", in some situations it means "lowest speed, temperature doesnt matter. Why is it working in different ways but in same settings i dont know.
In theory Balance is something like "from lowest cpu speed till normal cpu speed, no turbo boost", but it doesnt work like that at all.
    FCNTL
Maximize perfomance - in theory it must be "try to keep CPU on lowest temp when high load"
In practice its like "Balanced in PERF" - logic is unknown.
Balanced - the same, logic is unknown.
Unknown really means, that when i, for example, setup  PERF=Maximum turbo or turbo and FCNTL to Balanced, sometimes it works in full speed and sometimes not.
Maybe there is logic, but it tottaly unknown to users.
The bad thing is that theres no way i can set mode "always run cpu from lowest speed till highest speed without turbo boost, 800-1800mhz".
By the way, there is some error in Lenovo power manager - when i change options in power plan and click "apply", sometimes they a apply, and sometimes not. If not, i need to select other power plan, and then select the needed one back.
Now about how this all can happend. I'm not shure that i'm right, but logically it is:
In Lenovo power manager theres option called "Optimise fan control to". And, there is NO such option in real windows power plan, so, it can be only changed through Lenovo power manager. As i see, this option affects maximum cpu speed. So, lets say, if this option is "damaged" some way, theres no way it can be fixed in windows 8, because Lenovo power manager for windows 8 has too few options, and native windows power plan editor doesnt have this option at all. So, when i done "something" in Lenovo power manager for windows 8, it changed that setting and all ruined.
Sorry for my bad english once more, hope you can understand what am i trying to say. Looks like we have 1) an error in power manager for win8 and 2) incorrect power option logic, or "specific" logic without a manual.
The strange thing, that in BIOS we have this options too. But changes in BIOS doesnt affect this at all.
P.S. by the way, when i got my helix, dock battery was having "wear level" = 1%. Now, after 6 days (battery info 5 cycles) it has "wear level" = 2%. Is it normal, or battery is bad?

  • CPU frequency does not down-clock when idle, Power waste or is this OK?

I was browsing through the BSD sysctl's of OSX 10.6.2 today and noticed something I thought odd. Looking this up on different searches produced no useful results so I thought I'd ask here.
It seems that the MacBook late 2006 Core2Duo T7200 model has no cpu speed scaling. As far as I can tell, looking in the 'sysctl' output gave me these results:
    sysctl -a |grep freq
    hw.busfrequency = 664000000
    hw.cpufrequency = 2000000000
    hw.tbfrequency = 1000000000
    hw.busfrequency: 664000000
    hw.busfrequency_min: 664000000
    hw.busfrequency_max: 664000000
    hw.cpufrequency: 2000000000
    hw.cpufrequency_min: 2000000000
    hw.cpufrequency_max: 2000000000
    hw.tbfrequency: 1000000000
What this shows, CPU frequency maximum minimum are both 2 GHz, bus max and min are also 664mhz. These should be able to change I would think.
(The "tbfrequency" value I believe is timer speed; 1gigahertz assures smooth media playback and interactivity. This is not the issue)
I was under the impression that Core 2 Duo's were supposed to have "SpeedStep", to make the cpu run slower to draw less power and generate less heat. On my desktop, this definitely works and I have measured it with my Kill-A-Watt meter. I would think the same happens with all cpus, so I wonder: In my macbook, is the lack of slowing down the CPU using more power than necessary?
    (edited to add more detail)

I'm sure it's slightly less efficient. However, any CPU will still use a lot less power when there's less of a load (as you can see by running CPU-intensive tasks and watching the battery drain compared to when nothing is open).

most likely caused by overheating due to video encoding increasing cpu usage (system freezing and shutdowns is a problem with older intel imacs). monitor your internal temps using an app like istat. temporary workaround is to use an fan control app like imacfancontrol and increase the cpu fan speeds. but this does not actually fix the problem which may arise more periodically as the system gets older.
