Creative drivers and CPU spikes
Hi. I have a few (probably Creative-related) issues that bother me, but hopefully solving one will make the other go away. If not, I'll post it in a separate thread.
Back to the issue. I am using Windows XP. Most of the times, my CPU gets clogged a little by the System process, which takes up to ~10% CPU usage. I carried out a little investigation and it turned out the Creative drivers are responsible for it. It's worth pointing out that I'm no computer scientist, I just followed a simple tutorial ( link here: http://blogs.technet.com/b/markrussi...7/3031251.aspx ). According to Kernrate, XENFilt.sys driver has slightly more hits that the other ... entries ... Again, I'm not familiar with these professional terms. I've found out this driver was produced by Creative, so after updating the drivers and software to the recent version, here I am - asking for a little help.
Year ago I purchased the Tactic 3D Alpha headphone set with the drivers, some software and USB device, which I connect my headphones to. When those spikes are persistent ( and unfortunately, they are ), I just unplug this USB device and plug it in right afterwards. The System process calms down and the problem is gone for like, 20 minutes? This period of time varies a lot.
Thank you for your help
Sincerely, Thomas
Since you are using Rhapsody To Go then you need to have the PlaysForSure firmware on the player. The PlaysForSure firmware changes the player so that it doesn't use the Creative Drivers to recognize itself on the computer, but rather a Microsoft supplied driver which is included in Windows Media Player 0.
Using the Creative Driver, you would have to install it on every computer you plan to take your Micro to. However the PFS firmware only allows you to use Windows XP systems running WMP0. Whereas with the Creative Driver you get Windows XP/2000/98/Me, and even Mac and Linux support with the appropriate software installed on those computers.
But since you want to use Rhapsody To Go then you need to install the PlaysForSure firmware in order to transfer those songs to the player.

2 problems, video drivers, and cpu underclocked a22m
hi, I have an a22m 2628-RSU, first off, whatever OS I install the cpu runs at 697mhz, the bios says it is an 850mhz (the cpu it self says 850/256 meaning 850mhz 256k cache) I even replaced the CPU with an identical one, and still 697mhz.
the bios has the cpu set to performance not battery life. I have the same problem with an a21m which is a 700mhz, but only runs at 547mhz.
problem 2, I have installed windows 7 RC (7100) everything works great except it does not like the video card, same happend with vista. It says drivers are installed, but I know they are not functioning. 3d screen savers like the 3d text which work flawlessly in windows xp, tell me that my video card does not support them, in both windows vista, and 7.
thank you in advanced for any help.

IBM Thinkpad a21m 700mhz (547mhz) 384mb 40gb, Windows XPWelcome to the forum!
You have to push the machine pretty hard (open 10 Firefox windows and run Photoshop at the same time) to get the CPU to work at maximum speed. That is one of the ideas behind Intel's SpeedStep that your A22m has.
Graphic cards as old as yours are not supported by Vista or W7.
Hope this helps.

Mac OS 10.8 Temp and CPU spikes
I'm having a strange problem where any random program I have open will suddenly jump to 100% + CPU in activity monitor making the CPU temps jump from ~55C to 80 or 90C. This is really annoying as I have to close the affected program and reopen it when this happens. It seems to happen completely randomly. I first noticed this problem while running the Bitcoin-qt client however, while downloading blocks it took up a reported 700% CPU.
Any assistance would be great.
Thank you!

Terminination Page Hangs and cpu spikes when hit submit
Hi ,
Could you please help me trouble shooting on the below issues.
Req :
Convert "Termination Reason"(message Choice to Message LOV) on TerminiationPG so that Additional Description can be show to the manager before selecting the Reason.
Sol :
Created an External LOV With new AM, CO.Created a new Message LOV with Personilization and Extended to the LOV which i created, I was able to navigate to next page(Review) and when i hit
Submit it hangs
ThanksSalman,
There is an Apache timeout directive that you can increase, which should solve both problems. It looks like after the timeout the request is being retried, which may be the result of a different Apache directive. The access and error logs should show you some useful information about these cases. Some other reader might offer what those directives are, I'm not sure.
That you are seeing the page processes complete even though the HTTP request times out is not strange. Once the server-side code is invoked, the request timeout cannot stop it.

Creative Drivers causing non-stop Blue Screens
Hey Everyone,
I have a very serious problem with my Creative drivers, which is driving me absolutely crazy.
I have owned a SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS Notebook for quite some time and it has been working just fine in my laptop (I'm aware that this is the SoundBlaster forum, not the PCMCIA forum, however, since this is a driver-issue, I felt that this may be the better place to ask for help). I stopped using the card for about half a year and now that I want to use it again, the drivers keep blue screening my system!
I'm pretty clueless what more I can try to make that thing work again. I've uninstalled the drivers I had on my computer and tried every single version of the drivers available from the Creative website. Somewhere in the middle of the installation process, right after the drivers were copied and the card is being initialized, the system will hang without a bluescreen and without responding to Ctrl+Alt+Del or Num Lock. So in order to prevent that from happening, I started removing the sound card from my system, right after the installer started copying the drivers. That way, at least the installation process could finish successfully. However, after restarting my system, inserting the Audigy 2 ZS Notebook, emupia2k.sys would cause an IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL stop error. As I said, this happens with ALL of the drivers available from the Creative website (v2.09.006 from 0/09/06; v2.2.0002 from 03/6/07 and v2.8.000 from 03/23/09).
Out of curiosity, I then tried daniel_k's hacked drivers from the forum. These installed fine and without crashing my system during the installation process, however, they did still crash my systemwhen sound was playing back. You could forsee an impending crash by the sound starting to get messed up, sounding digital, choppy and roboty. The bluescreen that would appear was usually caused by commonfx.sys
Now I have completely given up on Creative dirvers and started using the open source drivers from the kX project. Problem with these drivers is that they do not support the Audigy 2 ZS Notebook fully, but at least my sound card works without causing my system to bluescreen.
My plea to the community: Please give me some kind of idea what I can do to get that card working smoothly again. The Creative drivers have never been very reliable on my system, but this is just rediculous. I can't stick to the kX project drivers, since I need SPDIF output, which doesn't seem to work with those drivers.
Here is what I have already tried to fix the issue:
- Uninstalled all traces of Creative drivers with Revo Uninstaller (using the built-in scan for leftovers)
- Used Driver Sweeper .5.5 from Guru3D to delete leftover sys files and other Creative components - http://bit.ly/AECNY
- Used Device Remover to delete references to the old Creative hardware from the registry - http://bit.ly/jingo
- Scanned the registry from anything containing "Creative" or "ct" and deleted it, if I deemed it safe
- Searched my hard dri'ves for anything referencing ct or Creative and deleted it.
- Scanned my registry with CCleaner
- Used the Creative Setup tool included in some of the older versions of the Creative drivers and used the driver removal feature that it has, to remove the drivers. Curiously, the tool would keep on detecting the driver, even after having removed it and performing a restart.
My System:
I run Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, with Service Pack 3 and all updates since then. My BIOS is the latest there is (from some time in 2007) and my PCMCIA controller is a Toshiba ToPIC00. I haven't updated my BIOS, the drivers for the CardBus controller or for my chipset in the half year that I did not use the sound card in.
?Creative Developers: If you like, I can crash my system a couple more times with your drivers, and send you a full kernel memory dump! Those things are about 200 megs each, so be sure to tell me the location of an FTP server or similar, that I could use.
Thanks for all your help

Hp dv3t 2000 overeheating/fan noise/cpu spikes
hi, i own a hp dv3t 2000 which is just about six months old. Since around a month ago I have been experiencing increasing fan noise and cpu spikes (100% cpu usage when really i'm not doing much at all)
i looked into this issue online and learned that it may be a airflow problem, so i wanted to take a look inside.
here's my frustration - i cannot take out the case because the screws are put in really tight and stripped, making it impossible to unscrew them. after 2 hours of intensive labor trying to unscrew my **bleep** laptop, i am so frustrated and angry that hp cannot bother to use a decent set of screws in their products.
i wonder if hp will take it in and have it fixed with the one year warranty on the product.hi, i own a hp dv3t 2000 which is just about six months old. Since around a month ago I have been experiencing increasing fan noise and cpu spikes (100% cpu usage when really i'm not doing much at all)

I'm having big issues with cpu spikes (9.1.7/ OS 10.7.3) Seems to be most prominent when arrange page is scrolling. Is this a problem many are sharing. It is really affecting my work flow!!
thanksSimilar issues here with scrolling and cpu spike (with accompanying extreme heat spikes) on early 2007 15 inch MBP and Lion.
Question 1: what cost and process are involved in upgrading my GPU? Currently using the factory-installed ATI Radeon X1600 128MB along with 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. What would fix this at an extreme price-point?
Question 2: not being very tech savvy myself, what could Apple do (in theory and practice) to address this? Seems to me this is a clumsy enough and common enough problem that Apple really ought to be smart about it and address it. But first discussion boards about it appear in early/mid 2011 from what I've seen, so what's up? I do not expect to be able to move my old 2007 MBP into Mountain Lion (some frustration, but fair enough - things move on, and five years is not unreasonable), but I do think it is in Apple's best interest to at least keep older models cooperating with Lion as this greatly increases workflow efficiency with newer Mountain Lion systems. I was seriously on the fence about going back to PC - a stupid problem like this will affect my decisions in future.
I'm not running any particularly demanding programs (at least not from my perspective) - just MS Office, Safari or Firefox, Mail, etc... I have intentionally cleaned out the HD and reduced the program load - hoping to keep the laptop going as a basic desktop workstation for word processing etc... and have an efficient workflow with Lion and my new, 13 inch MBP.
A fix with more customizable options for scrolling and such seems to me (no computer programing expertise) like it could be appropriate here - there is already the option to turn off smooth scroll or whatever, right? Why not add a few other options to make scrolling less demanding on the CPU for slightly older models? -
Daniel help... or anyone... vista drivers and softwa
hello i am so confused now... too many drivers here and too many softwares and files to download and don't know what are the new ones and what are the suitable ones
i have audigy 4 pro and i am using vista....
what are the right driver and files i should download to work properly with my audigy?
i already downloaded the files :
1-SB Audigy Vista Driver 2.5.0004 (based on X-Fi release)
2-Unofficial SB Audigy Series Software CD (Rev 2)
3- Sound Blaster Audigy series Vista Support Pack
long ago but i don't know where are the updates... or where are the new drivers and what to do
may any one please help me?As the instructions on the page state, you must uninstall previous Creative drivers and software. That doesn't include the Vista Windows Update drivers. If that's all you have installed then it's okay. But if you installed any official Creative downloaded drivers or software or previous daniel_k stuff, then yeah, you must uninstall all that first. If the uninstallers don't remove all of it then DriverSweeper from guru3D.com is a good way to clean house.
Disable UAC and reboot.
Install that Vista Support Pack and reboot
Install Unofficial Creative Alchemy .00.8 and reboot
Install the Revision 2 Cd by unchecking the Alchemy and in the Audigy 2 ZS installation choose custom and uncheck the drivers and software installed by the Support Pack and put checks in everything else (though you can leave Smart Recorder unchecked as it doesn't seem to install for me. Save you clicking okay to error messages). Reboot.
Reenable UAC and reboot.
That gives you the latest versions of all the stuff. -

DVDA and new Creative drivers/softw
I may have had too much to dream when I read it, or thought I read it, but are new drivers etc, disabling the ability to play DVDA disks with my Addigy 2 ZS Platinum? It may have just been a WinDVD issue but I can't remember and am loathe to upgrade my softs and drivers.
Just tried this using my X-Fi and the latest drivers from Creatives site and it's made a big difference. Some parts where I was getting a fps rate in the twenties are now up into the fourties. So a big thank you for posting this!
Wondered if it'd help my Call of Duty 2 demo problems but no go. :-(
Also, with the X-Fi cards there is another process listed that I terminated as well, after testing with the other one disabled already. It's called 'CTXFIHLP', which I'm asuming is an X-Fi only extension of the CTHELPER.
Didn't seem to make much difference, if at all, to the f.e.a.r demo but only did a quick test and haven't tried it with that one terminated and the other one left running.
Going to try BF2 in a bit, -
I noticed that LPX gives me huge CPU spikes if I attempt to record while the track is zoomed in. In repeated tests, I figured out that the more on screen drawing that LPX has to do, the more pops and clicks I get from CPU spikes. When the track is silent, the CPU level goes down, apparently because there is less graphic activity in the waveform...
I switched back to LP 9 to compare, and the CPU usage was much lower. I couldn't get the CPU to spike or make any audio pops no matter how much zooming I did during a recording. But going back to LPX, the problem was reproducedable every time.
I'm working on a 2010 8-core Mac Pro and I'm disappointed that the CPU efficiency seems worse in LPX than it was in LP 9. Has anyone else noticed this, or had similar experience? Are there any settings I could tweak to change how "GPU sensitive" LPX is? My desktop has the 'upgraded' ATI 5770HD graphics card with 1 gb of memory. And my computer has over 20 gigs of RAM. Buffer settings are identical between LP 9 and LP X, and I've already tried removing plugins etc. to see if there was a possible 3rd party culprit. Bottom line seems to be that LPX has different graphics routines that place more strain on the CPU....
Any ideas?Hey Pancenter!
Its funny you mention a possible decrease in performance using LPX and Mav as actually I am seeing the opposite of that here on my main iMac system.. but a definite slowdown with my Mac Minis... that use the built in Intel GCs..
I suspect it may also be connected to what Graphics card is used and the drivers installed too... The AMD Radeon 6970M 2GB version used in my 2011 iMac.. has turned out to be a 'bit of a beast' performance wise compared to some of the newer GCs used by Apple in the more recent iMacs... such as the NVidia GTX models...
I don't know why that would be except the drivers may simply be better quality.. because the actual hardware should not be as powerful as the newer models..but I certainly can tell a difference when running LPX on my 2013 iMac compared to a client's similar spec'd 2013 iMac I had here for a few days... especially when working with 30+ tracks... and upwards.
Anyhow.. there certainly seems to be a connnection between the change in graphic routines and performance in LPX and Mav for sure..and for most systems it seems to be a decrease but for a few.. there has been little change at all.
Cheers..

Huge CPU-spikes on 8-core Mac Pro
Hello,
I just got a new 8-core Mac Pro with 16Gb of RAM. And updated to Logic 9. And Snow Leopard.
Now logic is giving me the "System overload - could not process data etc" -dialog constantly. From the system performance window I see huge CPU spikes wich cause this dialog when reaching overload at the top. These happen, however, in a spot where there can be just one audio track playing. So it´s not a matter of having a hundred Space Designers happening simultaneously.
Is there something in the preferences I´m missing?
I appreciate your help,
Pessi
Helsinki, FinlandHas to be Logic. In 10.5.8 I have a sample track with add. drums and omnisphere. It show 2-3 dots on CPU, logic 9 then in snow , spikes all the way to pops cracks and 100% so it's logic not optimized for snow as it works fine in 10.5.8. I daw this a lot in cubase sx and nuendo and the pc. And youbknow us iverclocking types. Ha ha. We learn howto turn off everything for great audio performance so hopefully apple will address this. Could also be the plug in nit snow ready too butbam leaning more toward core audio having a glitch.
Again, 10.5.8 is fine. I should test logic 8 too. Hope with the annonced updates coming and more pro features we get more CPUs, dedicated PRO team, express slots in all machines as apple should know, like digi realized, app the $$$$$ is in PROSumer use that's why they bought maudio. Remember how upset the user base was when FireWire dissapeared from MacBooks. Hope we really get back to creative side if things.

Random CPU spikes while playing a music video
I'm using Quicktime 7.6.4 on XP Home SP3 to play music videos I got from ITunes. I'm using an AGP Nvidia 7600 GS with 256 MB of memory so it finally draws fine without half-frame refreshes but now I have a new problem. I only have an athlon 64 3200+ in my socket 754 board. It's the third fastest one they make for this motherboard but still, not exactly the quickest in the world. Playing a video in Quicktime only takes like 45% of the processor though so I thought it was fine for smooth playback. But randomly while playing any of these music videos, the CPU spikes to 100%, 95% of it being Quicktime's process, only 3% hardware interrupts so I know it's not a driver issue, and the whole computer locks up for about 3 seconds. Video suspends playback followed by the audio. Then right after that, playback resumes like normal. It can do it in the middle or end of the video or pretty much whenever or even not at all sometimes.
I've updated the BIOS, all related drivers, XP itself, and there's about 55% ram free whenn it does this so needless to say, it seems to be Quicktime's problem, not my computer. Even the voltages are good and also it doesn't lock up any other time using any other software, even VLC in dual monitor mode with direct X as the renderer.
So does anyone know what causes the sudden CPU spike? Is it running out of video memory so it has to ask the CPU to address more all at once or something? Or is it just calculating something that requires tons of resources and my computer isn't fast enough.
The only other unusual circumstances are that I have it configured to play on monitor #2 (which is actually a projector) while fullscreened and then as soon as it's done playing, it snaps back to the original monitor the quicktime window was opened on. It's really smooth and professional looking seeing as how my desktop background is black. I just hit control F, it plays with the video control overlay disabled, and then when it's done it goes back to black and they never see the quicktime window itself. So that's my current configuration in case there's some sort of known dual monitor issue. Either way, I need this thing playing videos smoothly ASAP! So does anyone know how to fix it?I have the EXACT same problem and I have yet to find any
resources on this subject. It's as if flash videos and games just
decide that they will rebel against my computer every 30 seconds.
I've also closed down all other programmes, and with a dual core
1.6 ghz processor in addition to 2 gb of ram, this
should not be a problem, but surprise surprise it is.
Someone here at adobe has to have a clue as to what is going
on. -

CPU spikes - what's the latest?
I posted a question about this in another thread but haven't heard anything back yet - and am desperate for answers so figured I'd try again!
I've just started having a big problem with CPU spikes, seemingly out of the blue.
After having had no problems (that have affected my workflow at least) since updating to Logic 8 when it first came out, the last 2 songs I've worked on have both started having repeated CPU spikes. In both cases the songs (which have for the previous couple of weeks been running fine as I've worked on them) suddenly seem to reach some kind of critical mass and stop at least 4 or 5 times in the song (with a processor overload) making it impossible to mix. The spikes themselves appear to occur every 10 seconds or so.
Though the songs have previously been fine during sections with many tracks, plugins and instruments running, once this starts happening even the most sparse sections can suddenly no longer play without overloading.
In the past, bouncing any instruments to audio or freezing processor-intensive tracks would clearly lessen the load and allow the song to play without a hiccup, but it seems once this starts happening that any attempts I make to pare the song back barely help at all. Even if, in between spikes, the song is running with about 25% max on the CPU meter, when a spike comes both processors momentarily max out and stop the track.
Strangely, with the latest song, even reverting to previous versions (ie from a few days ago when I was having absolutely no problems of this kind) the computer can suddenly no longer cope with the spikes (which I assume have been happening all along but haven't affected playback before now). Weird but true.
I've tried disabling all audio unit plug ins in AU manager, setting all channel strip inputs to no input, running the song using Core Audio rather than the MOTU 828 and repairing permissions with DiskUtility.
Today I tried a clean install of 10.5.3 and 8.0.2 on a new drive (no 3rd party plugins or ANYTHING apart from Logic and OSX installed) - still with exactly the same result.
I've even tried copying all the audio from the arrange into a brand new song, adding the plugins and routing to busses track by track, all the while keeping an eye on the CPU meter. As soon as I've sent just a couple of tracks to aux channels and added only 3 or 4 instances of Channel EQ and Compressor I notice the spiking begin. It's clear that by the time I've finished the setting up of the song the spikes will be maxing out again.
I realise I'm running an old machine (ie Dual 1G G4) but it has, up until now, been working spot on under the current system (I've been using 10.4.11 and hadn't updated to Leopard until today cos I haven't wanted to upset the delicate equilibrium!)
Thankfully I've found a clunky workaround by copying the song on to my Macbook and running that in my studio - a lifesaver but not satisfactory. (I can see the spikes on the Macbook too but playback isn't affected).
I've been using Logic forever and know this behaviour (and unresponsiveness to all my troubleshooting attempts) isn't normal!
I've seen the threads from a few months back but am wondering is anybody else out there still having similar issues? Or has anyone had them and solved them?
Please help!
Cheers
DuaneThe latest? It's still spikes constantly here. IMHO, I think there is an issue with-in LP 8 itself with symetric multi-tasking to more than one core... evenly distributing the load between cores. It's hit or miss with me & completely un-predictable and random (the CPU spikes). I've tried all the same quick fixes or work-arounds, of which none seem to make any difference at all. Even setting core audio buffer to 1024 & disabling safety buffer.
Oddly I do find it interesting that on my system anyway, Ivory 1.7 & Atmosphere 1.2, once initially instantiated on an inst track, will consistently evenly distribute between both cores (I have a dual core machine)... and never spike the CPU, no matter how much polyphony I use on either one, with the core audio buffer set to 128. There has to be something the way these two virtual synth plugs are coded differently, to utilize an even symetric threading or distribution to multi cores. -> I am no computer wiz tech head by any means, but this is the best way I can explain it.
Fresh clean install of OSX Leopard 10.5.4 / 2.5GB Ram / LP 8.0.2 / Digi Core Audio 7.4 / Digi 002R
