Crop tool and rule of thirds

I do not recall earlier versions of PS having the 3 column grid display after you draw a crop. Is the idea to place the focal point of what you want in the image into one of the three colulmns? If so, what is the best way to approach placing the focal point into the rows?
Thanks.

The "rule of thirds" and 75% opacity always show up as the settings, regardless of the fact that I'd changed them in my previous cropping session.
Changed Crop Guide Overlay-settings seem to keep after a restart of the application on my station.

1; cannot open organizer - neither from edit, nor opening screen - why? 2; cannot locate the crop tool; is it hidden? how do I find it?

In answer to your remark I will go through the whole process again at a later date and re-post. It does not make any difference to the resultant Crop size whether you input cm or pixels. Here's a point for you though since you mentioned it. Check out the Ruler - does it look like the Crop is anywhere near 500cm x 100cm? Maybe you were so busy trying to find fault that you failed to see the forest for the trees?
I only find fault where it exists - not where it doesn't. As far as Forums go, I am a member of a few Forums and have not had this sort of problem with answers before where the reply posts tend toward trying to pretend a problem doesn't exist or trying to prove fault with the poster. Hmmm.  Again I wonder how many of these reply's are from people with some affiliation with Adobe?
I will finish by saying that just for you I will go through the whole pointless exercise again and make sure that the Pixels are indeed input.

    9. OH DEAR IT DOESN'T WORK! Again it fails to give me a simple 500x100 pixel at 96dpi Crop Box!
After this reply post you may just get some idea of the frustration I am experiencing. As you can plainly see the Crop Box drawn goes to the very edges of the Image to be Cropped. Can you see the problem now? Maybe I should just go with my friend's suggestions and take a video of the process and post it on YouTube? Then go to my local Consumer Affairs Department! If you can find what I am supposedly doing wrong - please elucidate as I have followed both the prescribed steps in the somewhat Shoddy Online Help and also the suggested remedies posted on the Forum. All to no avail. It just Won't Work!

  • Crop tool and Snow Leopard?

Have installed Snow Leopard and now the Photoshop CS3 crop tool doesn't do what it should. It used to move the bottom right corner of a dotted rectangle but now it drifts away from the rectangle altogether and I cannot define the area to be cropped. Can anyone please help?

Hi everybody.  Only minutes later I discovered that I could "reset tool" and, having done that, all is back to normal. Sorry for not realising that earlier.

  • Three icons for crop tool and others in windows 7

My tools come in 3's since I installed PSE8 on windows 7 (core i 7, 64 bits) mainly crop, move, eyedropper and paint bucket. Others like clone, text and blur are OK. What gives? I had same program on XP and all was working fine.

That's a known bug with PSE.  You should be able to set the text size to 149% via Set Custom Text Size and not trigger the Editor bug.  Note that the Organizer also has a bug with text sizes -- its menus won't display properly at text sizes larger than 100% unless you apply this workaround:

  • Crop Tool and Rotate by it

    Dear all,
In Photoshop CS5, it is possible to crop an image and rotate its edges manually.
Sometimes, it is possible to crop an image and move each line of the crop, BUT cannot rotate it and the rounded arrow does not appear when hover at an angle.
Sometimes, when cropping, it is possibel to rotate, BUT without the ability of moving each line of the crop.
Sometimes, when cropping, cannot moving each line of the crop and the cropping appears with fixed ratio.
1- How can I control these situations?
2- How can I move each line of the crop and rotate it?
    Best Regards.

Out of curiosity  (using Ps CS5 32 12.03 on XP, OGL/GPU not active) I opened what appeared to be a grayscale .bmp file....
and it did crop with rotate OK,
Checking color mode it was RGB, so changed it to grayscale only, and voila, crop with rotate still works.
So all files, so far, work the same way....correctly handling crop with rotate OK.
Also tried on Ps CS5 12.03 Win7 64 laptop with OGL active, and it all works OK too.

I have been trying so hard to try and get my head round this since your last comment so what I think I know is with my Nikon d80 having 3:2 aspect ratio pictures that I wanted printed can only be the sizes you mentioned above which is fine as the pictures I got printed were 9x6" but it's from now I'm still bit lost when I use the crop tool and pre set the size to 9x6" with a resolution of 240 and crop out all the bits I don't want it comes back from printers stretched so i'm still lost as I don't know the  point where I'm doing something that causes the stretching? thank you for your patience
Lets separate this into topics  Aspect Ratio,  resolution and size ... etc
Aspect  Ratio is just the ratio of an image's two sides.    Your camera captures an image with a 3:2 Aspect Ratio.   If you want to print the whole image your camera captures it can be printed and image size that has sides the have a 3:2 ratio without distorting the image.
    Images are re-sized two ways:
One way is to keep the pixels your camera captures and print them at different resolutions. Resolution is nothing more then pixel size.  Pixels have no size till there is a resolution set. Pixels themselves may have a aspect ratio themselves.  These days most devices use square pixel.  Some video standards use non square pixels. So if you have square pixels and an image with 1800px by 1200px and set the resolution to 300DPI the print size will be 6" by 4"  if you set the  to 200DPI the print size will be 9" by 6".  Its simple math. 300DPI means pixels are 1/300"x1/300" there are 90,000px/inch 200DPI 1/200"x1/200" 40,000px/inch  100DPI 1/100"x1/100" 10,000. Note how quickly the pixel count climes as resolution increase doubling an image resolution requires four times as many pixels not two timas as many.
The other way is to create a new image using the pixels you camera captures.  Your Camera pixels are resampled(interpolated) into a totally new image not a single camera captured pixel remains intact the new image has a different numbers of pixels it a different image.  There are different interpolation methods some work better then others depending on image content and the direction of the re-size.  Any time you resample an image you loose some image quality.  The pixels are generated they are not captured using optics and a sensor.
Normally I do not resample when printing I just set the DPI so the image prints the size I want.  In the Image size Dialog I un-check resample and the set the print width or height I want to print.  Photoshop will calculate the DPI and set the other side size.    If you crop without setting a DPI resolution in the crop tool the crop tool will not resample the crop to a particular DPI it should just set the appropriate DPI.
I resample image for the web Cameras capture more pixels then can be display by displays.  So in the image size dialog I check resample and constrain the width and height to the image current aspect ratio then I set the number of pixels I want the width or height to be. Photoshop will calculate the number of pixels the other side will be. The DPI is meaningless for web images for Web images are displayed on screens at the resolution a displays has.  Your images will display large on a large Low DPI resolution HDTV screen and small on a high resolution cell phone display.
If you want to print you image a size that does not have a 3:2 aspect ratio without distortion  you need to crop you image to the aspect ratio you want to print at.  You need to discard part of your image.  The Crop Tool does not distort it discards part of you image.  It may or may not resample the crop selected.  I do not use the crop tool but if I did I would not use it to resample the crop I would not set in a DPI resolution in the crop tool.
Photoshop can also resize an image from one aspect ratio to and other aspect ratio a non constrained resize.  The resulting image will be distorted.  However Photoshop does have have a content aware re-size that tries to maintain recognizable objects perspective during the distortion process.  This process can also be aided by user masking.
    Cropping:
A 3:2 aspect ratio image can in theory be cropped to an infinite number of smaller images that have any aspect ratios including an infinite number of images that have a 3:2 aspect ratio.  All crops can be resampled to a particular DPI resolution. However digital pixels can not be sliced up so there are a finite numbers of crops you can hack form a digital image

  • CS4 Control of Selection tool and Cropping tool errors in Windows 7

The cropping tool and some selection tools seem to work poorly in my Windows 7 machine. How about yours?

They work fine here too. Possibly resetting the prefferences would cure the problem. I'd give it a try especially if the tools had worked then stopped.

  • Crop tool won't drag with CC Photoshop 2014

I have searched everywhere and talked with Adobe support through chat (they ended that abruptly??!), and Twitter and still have not had any resolution to this. I hope someone can help.
I'm trying to do a simple crop. I've done it a million times with no problems BEFORE CC 2014.
I select the crop tool and try to drag but it always stops immediately and selects the entire image as the Crop Preview.
    I've tried:
    using "Classic Mode"
    different Ratios/Resolutions
    uninstalling/re-installing
installing the latest update - but that always fails. - I'll even completely uninstall, then when it goes to re-install it will install the one file (after a million attempts at failing to download it) and then fail on an update that it tries to install. I've tried at least 20 times. AT LEAST!!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!  Could it be my NVIDIA GeForce 8400GS? (I know that's not the reason for the failed downloads from Adobe servers - that's all on them.)

I have spent a week trying to get this to work and now it just started working for all images. I have NO idea why.
    Here's what I did:
    1. uninstalled NVIDIA GeForce 8400GS drivers and reinstalled them
    2. uninstalled CC Photoshop 2014 (2x)
    3. clean install of CC Photoshop 2014 (2x)
    4. installed update (took dozens of tries before this actually downloaded and installed successfully unfortunately)
    5. clicked on the crop tool and tried to drag... nothing happened
    6. waited, waited and waited.. went about my other work and forgot about it and then after about 5 minutes the crop box appeared. I was able to adjust it too.
No idea but I'm happy now.

  • Weird Crop tool behaviour with 16-bit files

Shadow areas of my 16-bit files show strange patterns if I use the Crop tool to rotate. I can also replicate the problem by doing the following:
Make a new empty 16-bit file in PS6 in RGB mode (File>New). Fill it with 100% black. Use the Crop tool and rotate to taste. Press Enter to accept the crop and zoom in to enjoy the black and grey noise patterning reminiscent of a man's suit. The Straighten tool will achieve the same result. Your suit pattern will vary according to the degree of rotation.
The problem goes away if you subsequently convert the file to 8-bit, or convert to any other mode (Greyscale, Lab, CMYK).
This patterning is easily visible at 100% view or less, and appears whether the View>Show>Pixel Grid option is on or off. It is decidedly NOT the pixel grid I am seeing.
This effect can be created with files from both my Canon and Hasselblad cameras.
    I'm using a Mac Pro with OS10.6.8.

  • Crop tool shows background color unless I switch to "Classic" mode

I'm not sold on the "latest" Photoshop being the best. I've seen more bugs now that I've subscribed to the "CC" version than ever before. Here's my latest issue..
When I activate the crop tool (I realize it's been rewritten.. not sure why), I see my current background color in place of what is visible in my current  workspace. Ultimately, completing the crop command, it crops as expected, and the background color vanishes. What benefit is this? It adds confusion and makes me a bit confused as to what the final crop result will be. Why was this changed? Why am I seeing my current background color? It makes no sense. I've been using Photoshop for nearly 20 years and this is just dumb. Can anyone explain?
    Thanks!
    - Sean

Yeah, that was pretty vague. I was in a creative mode and was rudely interrupted by this weird change, so I wasn't focused on a clear post. The lack of direct email support to Adobe frustrated me also. Alas..
Bascially, I have a layer with some image data, and transparent regions:
I select the crop tool, and select a region just inside the outside edge, containing the portion of the image I care about:
The background switched from being transparent to my current background color selection. I had this green chosen for some completely unrelated task. I can't find anywhere that this can be disabled. The settings I have are what I believe to be the defaults:
And, when I change the crop settings to "Use Classic Mode", the behavior is the more sensible (in my opinion) current background:
I hope that clears up the confusion. I can't imagine any use case where replacing the current visible background with the current background color makes sense. If it's a feature, I can't find any documentation, official or otherwise, that explains why this is happening.
Yes, I like the latest versions of software, but since I made the jump from CS4 to CC, I've hit more bugs than ever before. I've had to kill Photoshop a couple times in the past two months, whereas before, it never froze up or crashed on me. This feels like a bug, but if it's a feature, I'd love to know how to use the new crop tool's background settings properly.
    Cheers!

  • LR 5.x crop tool bug: selection jumping on activation

    Hi,
I did not see this reported, but I'd be rather surprised if nobody had noticed the issue before.
I'm seeing this behavior since I upgraded from LR 4 to LR 5. I think I did the upgrade with 5.3, but at 5.6 I still have the following problem:
After setting a cropping rectangle (usually with rotation), then change some settings (e.g. exposure, shadows, blacks, etc.) and then activate the cropping tool again, the displayed image jumps to the original frame size for half a second and then back to the previously set crop.
Since I usually go back to cropping only for small changes in rotation, this is especially annoying, because it irritates the eye in a way that I'm sometimes not even sure if I'm seeing my previous setting again. And then I have forgotten how I actually wanted to adjust the setting
This seems to me like a bug introduced in LR5. I'm using Lightroom since version 2 and never had this behavior until the upgrade to LR5.
I'm using Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, nvidia Graphics.
    Steps to reproduce:
    1) Open an image in the development module (I'm using Canon CR2 raws)
    2) Set a cropping window
    3) change some image settings, e.g. exposure
    4) activate the cropping tool
    Please fix this behavior.
    Thanks,
    Karsten

Thanks for the clarification. Too bad that the fix did not make it into LR 5.6.
I'm new here, so please apologize my beginners question: Is there a place where I can find bug reports that were accepted as known bugs? I tried the community search on cropping tool and did not find any related bugs.
    Thanks,
    Karsten

  • Why doesn't the Crop tool allow me to reverse the mouse axis?

    Dearest Adobe,
When using the crop tool every axis is backwards! I know I'm supposed to move the photo, not the crop window, But for me this is not a matter of "correct" or "best practice", some people's brains do not work this way. I have been using lightroom for more than a year, and it still feels absolutely wrong every time. Please please please, I beg you, provide a reverse mouse axis checkbox.
I love Lightroom so much. Please help me...
    With love,
    Cody

The brain is incredibly flexible. But some people are left handed, some people are right handed. Some people have different dominant eyes, legs, arms.. etc. Part of learning a process is how it has been performed in the past, but another large part is the fastest and most reliable synapse. If a process "just feels wrong" that means my brain has already been trained or was wired a certain way to begin with.
The point of design is to create an intuitive interface that not only doesn't interfere, but enhances use of the interface. If I have to re-train my brain to work the way the tool wants me to think, then it is not as successful as it could be!
If you google: "Lightroom crop tool backwards" there are quite a few results with many people asking the same question.
All it needs is a preference item that reversed x and y direction for the crop tool and said: Crop Tool: Reposition the crop window/Reposition the photograph [x] [ ]
I know I'm not the only one!

  • Load a picture - crop it and save it back as jpg

    Hi,
I need to build a flash application In which I load a jpg, make a selection of it (a mask or something like crop tool) and save it back. Loading the picture and making the mask are not a problem. What I need is some help with saving the edited picture back.
So can you help me with this, or can you give me some tips where to look at.
    Thank you in advance!

    Hi CaioToOn!
First of all thanks a lot for the reply. Sorry for not doing that sooner, but I wanted to explore it a little before.
My application is almost set, load the image, made the crop, save It to a server with a php and all good until here.
Now I want to drag the image, make a scale of it and for that I used an Matrix (also done).
My problem came when I wanted to position the image holder on X and Y, as soon the picture loads . After doing that my new cropped image goes strange.
I know it seams like a noob question but I'm kinda of stuck.
Can you please take a look at my code here, because it’s drives me crazy and I can’t figure it out.
    Thanks a lot,
    Andrei

  • Crop tool precision - can it snap to whole pixels?

One thing that drives myself and every other designer I know crazy in Photoshop are tools that do not allow precisie snapping to the edges of whole pixels This is not such a problem with printed media and there are valid reasons to allow certain tools to snap to the midpoint of a pixel and it is nice to have the option to turn that on and off. However as a web designer I have a problem that has been getting on my nerves for several years and maybe there is another way I could approach this I am not thinking of.
Aside from templates where I can spend the time to create slices and export them as such, most often I am working on graphics that require me to select an area and crop / save for web on the fly.
    Here is the problem.
The Crop Tool does not snap to whole pixels, or guides, or document bounds very precisely at all. Compare snapping to guides with a standard marquee box vs the crop tool and you will see what I mean. The marquee snaps with gusto, while you never really know if the crop tool is sitting halfway across a pixel without zooming far in (and even then I am not sure). The marquee ALWAYS selects whole pixels and cannot select a "half pixel" regardless of how much you try.
Because of this, I am forced to use the Marquee tool to select my area for cropping and using the "crop" command from the menu since it is the only way to crop with the marquee. However, the problem with THIS method is that photoshop does not preserve your layered content outside of those bounds. Therefore any Layer Effects (especially shadows) are changed drastically to the point where shadows do not line up across multiple slices (if individually exporting them this way).
Sometimes I am re-adjusting an ad layout to another size, and need to crop without losing the content outside of those bounds. Sometimes I just need to keep shadows etc intact. Sometimes I need that content outside the bounds for motion graphics purposes etc.
This is all just a bunch of hot air to essentially say I cannot find a way to EASILY crop, snapping to precise pixels AND keep the content outside of the new document bounds intact for further manipulation in a layered document.
Is there a way to do this I am not thinking about? Can you make the crop tool snap to whole pixels and/or force the crop command in the menu to follow the same preference setting you gave the crop tool in terms of keeping the content outside of your new bounds from being deleted?
I'd appreciate any suggestions on this.
If Adobe actually reads this stuff, I can assure that EVERY SINGLE photoshop artist I have ever talked to about this has the exact same complaint. I know hundreds of people who hate this (even the non-web designers who don't need as much pixel precision).

It never really hampers my productivity but this morning I had to crop an ad down to a smaller size and just started thinking of this...
I always drag a marquee selection out (box) when I need to add a guide to my document to ensure that my guides snap to the pixel edge.
One thing I just did that seemed to work with the crop tool well was setting the grid settings to a gridline every 10px with 10 subdivisions in preferences and then turning on the grid when using the crop tool. It does not seem to snap unless you are actually viewing the grid but the tool snaps to individual pixels.
Typically in my normal work flow when I am in the zone and just doing things without thinking, I drag a marquee around to set my guides for cropping, then draw a marquee box snapping to those guides, flatten image to make sure layer effects stay intact, crop, save, use history window to go back to un-flattened state, move on...
It would be cool to be able to use the crop command after drawing the marquee without destroying the layer content outside the new bounds, even a seperate command that adjusts the "canvas size" to the marquee bounds would be fine.
Its not something I consider to be broken but honestly when I deal with designers who are not web developers, one of the major issues I get with PSDs that need to be chopped up for a web site is pixels not being precicise and boxes being drawn with half-pixels and guides sitting in the middle of pixels. It is indicitave of something that could be improved for my own productivity sake AND to help designers keep things snappy and tight in their comps.
I've had to re-build countless nav-bars, and other elements because of blurry pixels, non-precisely measured spacings, etc etc to ever count. But at the same time it is good to have something to be paid for LOL.
