Cropping a landscape to a portrait

Hi, I have a landscape photo I would like to crop into a portrait with the 4x6 dimensions, obviously iPhoto knows what a landscape and portrait photo is so I have no option to crop it the way I want unless doing it with no lock on but then how do I know i've got the right 4x6 dimensions.
Any help here on this?
Cheers

It is a two step selection process - select the 4x6 constraint then go to the constraint again and you can now choose landscape or portrait

  • Script for cropping only landscape or only portrait pages

    I need to apply different crop settings to the landscape and portrait pages in a document. The document runs into about a thousand pages so any kind of manual solution isn't viable.
    I know that Acrobat only allows the crop tool to be selectively applied to odd and even pages, and not portrait and landscape pages.
    I understand that a script can achieve what I am trying to do. Unfortunately, scripting is out of my area of expertise.
    I will be very grateful if someone who knows how can give me a hand.
    Thanks!
    Jay

    Here's a basic script that should do it:
    var i, aRect1, nWidth, nHeight;
    // Loop through all pages
    for (var i = 0; i < numPages; i += 1) {
        rect1 = getPageBox("Crop", i);  // Get the current page rect
        nWidth = rect1[2] - rect1[0];  // Calculate the page width
        nHeight = rect1[1] - rect1[3];  // Calculate the page height
        if (nHeight >= nWidth) {  // Portrait/square pages
            rect1[0] += + 2.5 * 72;  // Left 2.5"
        } else {  // Landscape pages
            rect1[0] += 3.5 * 72;  // Left 3.5 "
            rect1[1] -= 1.0 * 72;  // Top 1.0 "
            rect1[2] -= 3.5 * 72  // Right 3.5;
            rect1[3] += 0.5 * 72;  // Bottom 0.5"
        // Crop the page
        setPageBoxes("Crop", i, i, rect1);
    You can run this in the interactive JavaScript console (Ctrl+J), from a temporary bookmark, link, or button, or in a custom action.

  • I am trying to crop a portrait photo into 6x4 portrait ready for printing.  Iphoto only crops it landscape and therefore cuts out most of the photo.  Is there any way of resolving this?

    I am trying to crop a portrait photo into 6x4 portrait ready for printing.  I am using Iphoto on a Macbook Pro.  Everytime I try and crop the photo, it crops in Landscape which cuts out most of the photo.  Is there any way of resolving this?  I am new to Macs as I am currently switching from MS.  It is very easy to do this in MS photo editor so I can't believe it can't be easily done in Iphoto!

    These are the two steps that Larry describes:

  • IPhoto update with Maverick will only crop in landscape no matter how you drag the corners.

    Not being a professional photographer, I use Iphoto for basic editing as well as organization.  Prior to Maverick update and Iphoto update, when i used the crop tool and selected constrain and photo size (i.e., 8 x 10, 5 x 7 etc.) the crop tool would automatically change between landscape and vertical based on how you drag the corners of the tool.  Since the upgrades, the crop tool will only allow you to crop in landscape.  Any suggestions or does this need to be addressed in a software update?  I know some of you will want me to use some other software (Apreture, Lightroom, etc.) not interested.  I love just the basics.  Thanks.

    After setting the crop aspect ratio go back to that menu and at the bottom select Portrait.  Now it's a two step process.

  • Why is the image cropped in landscape mode

    Hi - I made video from a collation of youtube clips and transcoded it to iPad default settings in FCPX but when I view it on iPad the image along with the subtitles are cropped in landscape mode, why is that when the transcode settings list iPad 3 as included. How, or what do I need to do to fix this problem please.

    The iPad display is 2048x1536 pixels which is 4x3 aspect ratio. When you display a 1280x720 video which is 16x9 aspect ratio you will get bars at top and bottom of the iPad screen. Any attempt to fill the screen by scaling etc will cause you to lose part of the frame edges. You have not stated what your project properties were in FCP. If they were 1920x1080 or 1280x720 then you might try an SD project ie 4x3 and see what sharing does for that. I haven't tried it but I suspect it will be 4x3 and fill your iPad screen. The issue may be the aspect ratio of your youtube clips. If they are wide screen which I suspect then you would see the bars in FCP storyline and your are back to the same issue when you export. You could in this case use the transform tools etc in FCP to fill the screen and pan the clips to not lose subtitles. It's a fiddling process. Hope this clarifies a bit.

  • Videos shot in landscape show as portrait with the digital video adapter a1438

    The videos I shot in landscape,  show as portrait when i play them on an HD screen using the digital video adapter a1438
    i have iphone 5
    ios 7.0.3
    the adapter a1438 has firmware version 7.0.0 (11a7451)and hardware version 1.0.0
    so what is happening here.
    i have seen this question asked many times, without a single reply...
    typically Apple...

    Ok I found out a workaround. I'm sorry my English is not so good. I hope everybody will understand what I try do describe. I'm not sure if this is just possible after updating to 7.0.4 but I don't tried it earlier. Even if a video was displayed incorrect I increased it on the phone like you're able to do it with photos. Then I started it again and I got it in landscape. Sometimes I have to do this two or three times to get the correct format. This nerves a lot but better then nothing.
    Good luck!

  • Orientation while cropping photos (landscape and portrait).

    When cropping a photo, how can I change the orientation of the crop box? In other words, if I have a photo that is oriented like a landscape (say 4" tall and 6" wide) and I want to crop toa smaller 4x6, but in a portrait orientation, how can I do this? iPhoto seems to want to keep the crop box oriented the same way as the existing photo. I hope I'm making myself clear.
    I have searched the forum for this and unable to answer my question. Thanks for any help you can offer!

    Don't worry, you're not the only one. How would you know that you had to go back to the constrain menu and choose portrait. It's not there until you choose a constrain ratio. It's easy to miss.

  • How do I crop landscape pictures in portrait with 2:3 ratio?

    When I have a landscape picture and want it to crop in portrait format I don't know how to do it. I want to crop it in 3:2 ratio. When I enter that ratio it shows an 2:3 and not in 3:2 ratio. That way it's impossible to crop that image in a fixed 3:2 ratio.

    Once the landscape crop is up, grab the corner and drag it across. The whole thing will flip. You'll get the hang of it if you play with it.

  • Cropping from Landscape to Portrait

    I have some fun new photos I just took and have been editing in iPhoto '08, but I'm having trouble using the "constrained crop" feature. In the landscape aspect, I want to constrain it to portrait proportions equivalent to the landscape, but its just not letting me. Any help?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. First select all of the photos and use the Photos->Revert to Originals menu option. Then try again. If that doesn't help rebuild the library as follows: launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
    Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • I would like to crop a landscape phot nad turn into a portrait

    but I cant seem to do it. I've got constraints set on none and tried using the crosspointer but it only lets me crop one side- I wish to remove some form both sides and turn into a 6x4. Any suggestions anyone?

    not sure what you mean by "draft" quality settings ,
    can't see that anywhere.
    All modern printers I've seen have some place to change the quality (or DPI) settings. They may be listed as "draft - normal - best" or "speed -vs- quality" or may be set using DPI numbers. [Better quality = longer print time = larger DPI.]
    I usually use 300-600 DPI to print photos that will be seen up close. For things I will post farther away from the viewer, 100 DPI is fine.
    nb I just tried to print a blu tinted photo using
    the photo on photo paper preset and the result I got
    was the opposite ie too dark and much darker than the
    preview. amyne I am running low on ink , in fact I
    noticed a pop telling me the yellow was low
    Try re-printing that image once you've changed your ink.
    Because the computer formulates each squirt (i.e., tells the printer how much of which ink to include in each of the 300 squirts per inch), if you remove one of the inks from that formula (i.e., no yellow) the photo will look very strange!
    Good luck.

  • FM9 makes landscape pages into portrait when saving as PDF

    I have FM9, Windows7 Professional 6.1.
    One doc has landscape pages, but when I save to PDF I get portrait pages cropped left and right.
    I reinstalled FM9, got the updates (which weren't in the download of FM9 -- whyever not?), and I got the right orientation once. Next day, back to portrait for these landscape pages.
    Today I tried to install FM12 as a trial, but it won't. I get to the "Currently Installing Adode PDF Creatino Add-on XI" and that's where it stops, 42% complete. So that won't be any help. I was hoping FM12 would not have this problem.

    You need to select a Distiller joboptions file where the "Auto-Rotate Pages" option is set to "Individually" instead of "Collectively by File" or "Off".
    Regarding the trial, if you already a version of Acrobat installed, you must NOT use the default options for installation. This tries to install the PDF Creator add-on (essentially a limited form of Distiller) that will conflict with the existing installation. The install may either overwrite part of the exising Acrobat insallation or fail and still damage the existing installation.

  • Landscape pages and portrait pages into the same document ?

    Hi everybody,
    I have a report to do, and I would like to introduce a graphic into the document.
    To do so, I need to switch from a portrait format to a landscape format, and back to a portrait format, to follow the explications.
    How to do so?
    Thanks in advance
    PS: sorry 4 my english I'm not a native speaker.

    Ok, thanks a lot.
    But what about page numbering?
    I could make it .
    But, if I rotate the picture through the metrics. I find the page numbering on the right bottom .
    But , it should be on the top right and rotated.
    do you have any suggestion for this detail.
    Have a nice day.

  • Smartforms : first page in landscape, others in portrait

    Hi experts,
    I have a problem with a Smartform printing. The first page is in landscape, as i have configured, but the others ones are in portrait.
    I don't understand why. I have only one page in my Smartforms and i have put Landscape orientation.
    Thanks

    hi all,
    I guess we can put this setting at the spool level by passing some attribute in the FM which is used to invoke Smartforms.
    there will be a field for orientation which will help us in the same.
    please let me know in case you dont find that.

  • Graphic shows in landscape, disappears in portrait

    I placed a graphic in a 3 column grid landscape layout. Through the Widget menu I applied a caption. Through the Wrap menu I applied Float and Object Causes Wrap.
    When I switch to Portrait mode - the graphic just isn't there. It's not anywhere - I checked the whole document.
    I was hoping to get the graphic to appear in the same spot in the running text in both Portrait and Landscape.
    Am I missing something here? Applying the wrap incorrectly? Is this a glitch in iBooks Author?

    I've looked into this issue further - your advice appears to be bad. The option to "share with portrait" (under the Layout inspector) appears to only be available for images that are on master pages.
    I'm still learning this program so I'm definitely no expert. If you can further explain what you meant or correct yourself, I'd appreciate it.

  • Isolating images in Landscape vs. Portrait

    I'm having a weird problem with images. I'm not sure what the exact term is for this function, but normally if I tap on an image in landscape or portrait mode (assuming the image is in the media track in the latter mode), the image will isolate and fill up the screen. I'll call this isolate mode (it's also where you can toggle on or off the title/caption of the image, or click the X in the top left to return from the image back to the previous page you were on).
    For some reason however, there are a few images in my file that won't isolate in landscape mode. I know that an image has to have a caption and/or title to work in isolate mode. But beyond that, even some images in landscape mode that have a title still won't isolate. At first, this seemed to be arbitrary. But after looking through my book (which is about 800 pages with 700+ images), I've noticed that it seems to be confined to images that I've placed that lay over a complete textbox area that's on my template.
    For example, I have one template page with two large text boxes side by side (basically a normal landscape page divided in half, recreating a facing pages-type layout). If, then, on a landscape page using this layout, I then place an image over the same area size as one of these text boxes (basically covering it up exactly), even if the image has a title and/or caption, it still won't isolate when I finally export the file. However, the image will show up and isolate in portrait mode.
    Is this a glitch, or something about the spec I'm missing?

    make sure your image is above your textbox (bring to front under "arrange")
    and make sure "full screen" is selected.
    Hope that helps
