CS2 excessive pixelation using filtering/masking
I'm having a problem with excessive pixelation when using photoshop filters and masking. I've done this process 100's of times, and now this editing technique is creating patches of pixelation. Technique wise, I am on a second layer; I've applied the diffuse glow filter; then I mask the layer; select specific areas I do not want glowed; feather the selection; and then I brush away the effect from my selection. Results wise, the feathered areas and the brushed away areas appear to have holes or patches of the background layer coming through. Usually this is a smooth transition look. Now it's patchy and overpixelated somehow. I'm getting the same affect if the picture is jpg or psd. It is also doing it with just basic curves.
Any ideas what is causing this problem?

maybe it's the brush tip at fault, have you tried filling the feathered selection with black? Alt+Backspace to fill with the foreground or Edit->Fill

I`ve just downloaded the Pixel Bender filters for Photoshop CS4 from Adobe Labs. The speed of those filters is really incredible (GPU accelerated)!
But the filters itself :(
Most of them are pretty much useless in my opinion. I hope we will get more usefull filters like a simple gaussian blur or unsharp mask or smart sharpen. Of course we already have those filters in Photoshop, but not at that speed. Pixel Bender is really realtime!Thanks, Stephan,
I wonder how much onboard memory new cards need to handle 8000x8000. It looks like the Technote on GPUs and OpenGL has been revised. I don't see the information that I recall earlier about what features work with various amounts of onboard GPU memory. There are more specifics in the FAQ at the bottom of the technote:

So if I'm working with a 3D layer in PS CS4 extended, it sounds like 1.7GB of memory would cover Photoshop's maximum memory utilization and the adapter's 3D rendering overhead.

A. For basic OpenGL functionality, you should have at least 128 MB of RAM on your display card. If you're running Windows XP in general, OpenGL will work best if you have 256 MB RAM on your display card. Most Photoshop work will run faster with between 256 - 512 MB of display RAM. If you do a lot of 3D work, you use Panoramas or large images, or you need to have multiple applications open at the same time that use the GPU, you might benefit by having 512 MB or more RAM on the display card.

As I recall, the earlier version of this technote spelled out in more detail what "basic" OpenGL functionality means one image window without too much resolution in my experience.
The specific mention of XP suggests it needs more memory for OpenGL functionality. Vista virtualizes the graphics adapter and XP doesn't. I've yet to see anything but vague "it works better on Vista" from Adobe tech on what the GPU performance difference is between the two platforms.

I have a problem using filters( e.g. oil painting or blur), they are greyed out.
I'm using Win8 64 bit and a geforce 650M.
The drivers are new (updated today to 320.49) and opengl and opencl are running.

Because there haven't been many requests to enable them for 16 or 32 bit/channel.
This isn't about age, this is about doing things right, and about prioritizing the work (it's not like we have a shortage of feature requests) -- updating the math in filters takes time, as does testing the updated math. We have to have some justification for doing that work (why should it be done, what does it enable, how does it help someone's work). And if all we get are "make them all work" and "give me a pony" requests, then there is no justification for doing it.
One could argue that that is a problem in itself: a reactive behaviour rather than an active one in regards to your users and omplemented features stifles creativity and innovation. You will not get a lot of users requesting a change in how layer masks are implemented in Photoshop, because 99% of the users have no clue that there is a far superior approach possible. Same for instanced layers, and the possibility to have a range of -200% up to +200% for a layer's opacity.
I can tell you that these small innovative features in Photoline slap Photoshop in the face in terms of usability and flexibility.
And as for rewriting the filters: I sort-of understand - however, seeing that two Photoline developers seem to be doing a better job then Adobe. On the other hand, working in a large behemoth environment like Adobe probably causes a lot of bureacratic delay as well.

Smart objects, although they do have some perks, feel a bit patchy, and an awkward way of working compared to Photoline's layer system. Why use layer masks and adjustment layers?
I've been using PSE and CS successfully for years.
One thing I have never understood is: why use layer masks and adjustment layers, instead of simply creating a copy of the subject layer (the one I want to make changes to) and experimenting with that? It's quick (Ctrl-J), I can do it as many times as I want, I'm not affecting my Background layer. If I like the changes, I can keep them. I can switch the copy on and off to compare with the Background layer. I can do any type of blend or combination I desire. I can insert Gradient layer(s), select any part of the copy and (Ctrl-J) create a new layer containing only the selected part. I can adjust size, rotate, do anything.
It almost seems that "layer mask" and "adjustment layer" are mainly another layer of terminology; can anyone explain (preferably in 50 words or less) how they are intrinsically different from or superior to working with copies of the Background layer? What can be done with them that can't be done simply using copies of the Background layer?Here's a very basic example of the advantage of using a layer mask.
I have this picture of a sunflower and I want to convert the background to black & white, leaving just the flower in color. I duplicated the Background layer, converted it to B&W and proceeded to use the Eraser to uncover the flower color. But I made a mistake and erased outside the flower. There is no way to correct this other than deleting the layer and starting again.
Now let's use a layer mask on the B&W layer. Set the Foreground/Background colors to the defaults black/white. Using the Brush tool paint on the mask with black to reveal the color. Here I painted too far, revealing a green leaf in the background. No need to start over. Simply switch to white and paint the excess to convert back to the B&W.
Tip: while painting you can type "X" to toggle between black and white.
You could also select the flower using the various selection tools and then fill the selection with black. If it turns out the selection was not 100% accurate you can then fine-tune the result by painting on the mask with black or white as necessary. -
I use photoshop cs2 - When i use the "sketch filter - photocopy option" on a jpg/psd it comes up plain white (most of the time). Once in a while it works.. Can anyone give me a hint on how to fix this or a hint on what I'm doing wrong.
Those filters work best when the foreground and background colors in the toolbox are different.
Try pressing the D key on your keyboard to set the defaults of foreground Black and background White and then try the Filter>Sketch>Photocopy. -
Using filters in business connectivity services
I am now completely confused by the BCS filter option. I added a Business Data List to a page and connected it to my external content type. Then I have configured 2 filters in SPD:
LocationID = User input (comparison)
AND
Address = wildcard
Default value for both is null and I checked to ignore the Filter if the value is null.
When I search for Address contains "City Name" it correctly returns items with that city in the address but when I search for Location ID equals 12345 it returns all of the items.
How can I fix this?

You need to make sure you define filter in external content type correctly.

Issues with using /31 mask on 3750 switch
I work for a large manufacturing plant that employes Cisco 3750 and 6500 series switches. We are having a problem in using 255.255.255.254 mask on point-to-point VLAN uplinks. Every time, the switch restarts, after the initial boot process, it locks up after the following error message:
"Warning: use /31 mask on non point-to-point interface cautiously".
The switch in question is a 3750-12 port fibre switch. IOS version: 12.2(25).SEB March 2005.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1)The message is just a warning message introduced through

It is not only during boot up but the message is printed even when the IP address is configured.

The reason you are seeing after boot up is because start up config is applied to running config.

How do I use clipping mask to cover unwanted background?
I'm practicing illustrator myself. I have a book for illustrator hoping it would show me step by step on how to use the masks to take away any unwanted background in a photo but it didn't do that. Can anyone teach me how or show me where to look for the information on how to use the clipping masks or other type of masks? I went to the adobe workshop video to look for the answer but it didn't show exactly as what i want to know. The image i'm practicing on is a family photo and i want to isolate everything to just one person in the photo so how can I do that using clipping mask? Thanks!!

Many moons ago I asked a question here on the forums about how to use filters (specifically a glow filter) on a mobile devices (specifically the iPhone) when using GPU rendering and high resolution.
At the time, there was no answer... filters were unsupported. Period.
Well, Thanks to a buddy of mine, this problem has been solved and I can report that I have gotten a color matrix filter for desaturation AND a glow filter working on the iPhone and the iPad using GPU rendering and high resolution.
The solution, in a nut shell is as follows:
1: Create your display object... ie: a sprite.
2. Apply your filter to the sprite like you normally would.
3. Create a new bitmapdata and then draw that display object into the bitmap data.
4. Put the new bitmapdata into a bitmap and then put it on the stage or do what you want.
When you draw the display object into the bitmapdata, it will draw it WITH THE FILTER!
So even if you put your display object onto the stage, the filter will not be visible, but the new bitmapdata will!
Here is a sample app I created and tested on the iphone and ipad

I currently have a slider which changes the hue of an image in a movieclip, I need it to move through he full range -180 to 180.
I desperately need to get this working on a tablet but cant get the filters to work in GPU mode. My application works too slow in cpu mode.

does anyone know how the cutout filter works and is there a way of achieving the same effect without using filters to get more control over final look?
Several ways to get similar results. Image > Adjustments > Posturize with low values similar to what you'd use n Cutout. This is the most flexible way I can think of as you keep the image in RGB mode with layers intact. A more radical approach would be to reduce bit depth using Indexed Colour. You'll need to experiment with settings, try changing Forced to Primaries, and Matte to Foreground Color. There's no going back from this route, although you can change the mode back to RGB to re-enable layers, adjustment layers etc.
A nice thing about the Filter gallery filters is that you can change the layer to a Smart object with all the control that gives you.
Now if only this forum could filter out bizarre content. -
I have CS2 and I use it almost every day.. Today when I tried to launch it, a prompt came up saying my Activation was no longer valid and it closed automatically. Then when I tried to re-open it, a prompt came up saying "A serious error has occured" Please re-install the software... I have no idea where my software is... That was many many years ago? HELP!!
When you go to the download page, you must do two things:
Download this file: PhSp_CS2_English.exe on the download page.
Use the serial number on the download page in order to install your non-activation copy.
Do not use your old CD or serial number. It no longer works.
If you have Windows 7, the advice is to turn off UAC and run the installer as Administrator.

How do you use the MASK tool with 4K footage?
Hi everyone!
Normally when I use the mask tool, I drag it onto the footage and four nodes appear on the clip, one in each corner - and then I can move each corner to where I want it...
I've just shot some 4k footage using a Canon 1d-c and for some reason, when I drag the Mask onto the footage, the four nodes still appear but I can't move them around!
Does that make sense?
Any help would be massively appreciated!
Thanks in advance!There shouldn't be any difference in being able to adjust them just because you're using 4K. I can't reproduce the problem and can't think of a reason why it would happen. Hopefully someone else will chime in.

All 3 of my books transferred over without my having had to do anything at all. If you're worried about retaining books, you could try moving your ADE 4 to an external drive & confirming that your books are also there. I believe that the book information is saved elsewhere (separately from the ADE) and it should simply transfer over, but since I only had three books, all library items, I didn't have much to lose. All I can speak from is my own experience. I had to get rid of ADE 4 in order to successfully install ADE 2.0.

Problem: Transform applied to Smart Object fails to transform an attached Smart Filters Mask.
I mean a Transform, including Free Transform, as found in the Edit menu. A simple move by the Move Tool is OK.
A workaround until this bug is squashed is to encapsulate the Smart Object + Smart Filters + Filter Mask inside another Smart Object and transform that.
However, that will not be a satisfactory solution in some cases. If a filter has size parameter(s), e.g. Gaussian Blur radius, a scaling or warping/distorting transform applied after the filter will obviously differ from the filter applied after the transform.
In any case, the workaround is inconvenient to subsequent editing and experimenting with filters and masks.R_Kelly wrote:
