Cs4 - which window out of 20 is active?

I have installed and started using CS4. Dell vostro 400 Windows xp 32 bit intel core2duo E6850 3GB of Ram. Nvidia Geforce 8600GTS Driver version downloaded last week: 6.14.11.7824
In CS3 the active window had a blue border at the top so if you had 20 windows open, you could always quickly see the active window. In CS4 all the windows are gray at the top. Can't tell easily which one is active. Any reasonable explanation for this 'improvement'? Any way to change it back the way it was prior to being improved?
And another thing .....
There is a drag lag. When dragging an image across the screen, it appears in two places at once for a second. Uncool. No drag lag in CS3.
There is a zoom lag. Unlike the instantaneous zoom of CS3, there is a zoom lag of a second or so. Uncool.
There is a mysterious gray line that keeps appearing across the top menu bar. Uncool
I also have a 10 month old Dell 1330 laptop running XP that I use for photoshop a lot. Nvidia refers me to Dell for video drivers. Dell will update the XP video driver on this laptop the day after hell freezes over. Is this laptop now a door stop as far as funtioning properly with Cs4? CS3 works well on the laptop.
I like photoshop. I want improvements, but please don't obsolete hardware that I just bought.
Perhaps I am looking at this the wrong way. Adobe : What hardware actually works well with CS4? Maybe that is the best way of looking at this. With each new CS release, Adobe could just tell us precicesly what hardware to buy and we can trash our current machines and buy whatever they tell us will work. Naaaaaaaaahhhhhh.

Mark, I'm seeing some of the issues you describe. Namely, drag lag, the gray line through the top bar, etc.
On the zoom lag, I think it's intended behavior if you're talking about the continuous zoom. If you click on it briefly, it will go to the next zoom level; if you click and hold it will zoom continuously.
I have several major problems with this release and will wait patiently while Adobe works on a fix...

Can Acrobat XI be installed on a Windows PC where CS4 (which includes Acrobat Pro 9) is installed?
I have previously been told by Adobe tech support that the applications included in CS4 cannot be upgraded individually, and my guess would be that Acrobat XI and Acrobat Pro 9 cannot coexist on the same machine.  But I wanted to check and make sure.

Active window jumps to viewer window out of timeline for no reason.  For example I will be editing in timeline and all of sudden I will try a keyboard shortcut but it will take effect in the viewer window and not in the timeline.  Is this something I am doing wrong?  This never happened in the last year I have been using FCPX until a few months ago it started happening.  Already tried trashing prefs, restarting, etc. etc.

  • Photoshop CS4 Help Window Pops Up For No Reason

This same thing was happening in Photoshop CS3 and I could never figure out why. I figured that since CS4 was coming out, I would buy it, stop using CS3 and the problem would be solved, well it's not. So far, I'm happy with the new program but for some reason, out of nowhere, while working on a photo, the Photoshop Help window (which opens as a web browser window) will pop up for no reason! Today, it popped up over 6 or 7 times and I nearly had to crash the program to get it to stop. I figured this problem would have been solved with the new version since the same thing was happening in CS3 but it hasn't. I'm running a Windows XP-based machine that I built myself about 2 years ago. I have a 512mb ATI Raedon X1650 video card and have 4GB of RAM so this machine has far more than enough power to run the program. I updated my video and mouse drivers prior to installing the program. Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks for pointing that out. It really happens very rarely, but when it happens, it's quite a huge annoyance.
Well I have about 3,5GB RAM on a Windows Vista 32 Bit system (hence just 3,5 instead of the full 4GB), with the OpenGL options activated, and maybe over 100GB of free HD space (that'll never be a problem, but since swapping is not used by all modules, I often bump into RAM problems when using tools like auto-aligning layers or stitching panoramas) and 2,5Ghz core duo on a notebook. The Windows swap file is also "just" 4GB...but I found more than 4GB to be a bit extreme.
RAM usage is set to 56% right now (916MB), cache levels is set to 6
After restart, everything runs fine again, I hope the help screens leave me alone.
I didn't know this is since v. 7! I worked with all versions since 5.0 and since becoming a freelancer also bought every version since 6.0 except 7. I only experienced this bug in this and the previous version. Maybe my hardware doesn't keep pace with PS anymore

  • Problem with Encore CS4 (and Windows 7, possibly)

    Greetings:
Anybody else having this problem? First I'll get my system blood work out of the way. It's a brand new HP Pavillion.
Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit)
    8GB RAM
    Over 700GB of FREE harddrive
    Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 @ 2.5 GHz
Video Chip Set: Intel G45/G43 Express Chipset
I have ensured that everything is updated. This includes:
    All CS4 Applications
    Windows 7
    My Graphics Card Driver
    My Display Driver
I have also updated the Roxio PX Engine to V4.18.16a. I had read on a forum that Encore uses this driver and it should be up to date.
OK, the problem, which I can reproduce with the simplest Encore project:
    1.     Start Encore
    2.     Create a new project - specify DVD - everything else id default.
    3.     Create a timeline
    4.     Import asset. It is a simple Standard Video AVI file, 720x480.
    5.     Select timeline for editing
    Here's what happens:
    A) Monitor window behaves normally. I can click play and watch the imported video. Sound is fine, everything is fine. I can start and stop the play back freely. All is well.
    B) Now, I can do a number of things to create the problem I am having. The simplest is to just go to the timeline editor, select the AVI asset that has just been there, running fine, and remove it from the time line. At this point, the monitor window's internal frame that used to represent the video view port area, disappears. By "disappears", I mean that the Monitor window goes to the background color which is used for empty, unused window regions. What had been there before was a jet-black frame representing the video view area
Now, if I go to the project window and re-select the AVI asset that I was just viewing and put it BACK into the timeline, the Monitor does not restore. If I play the timeline, the monitor is still blank, although I can hear sound.
In addition to this, I also find that Encore has slowed so that response to the simplest operation is extremely slow. It doesn't crash, although, it might if I hang around long enough - but I don't. If I shut down Encore and restart it, it will work OK until I start manipulating video assets again and then the same thing will happen.
I should mention that, yes, I have this new computer but I was using Encore on an older and much slower XP system with less memory and drive space and I had no trouble with encore. I should also point out that the AVI assets that I use to produce this problem are the same ones I had used successfully on the older system.
Is there anyone out there that would find this problem familiar? Anyone find a solution?
Thanks in advance to anyone that responds.

    Hi John:
Thanks but, I had already done this. I was having THAT problem with Encore (could not even initialize before tanking) when I first installed it and that's when I updated the Roxio engine. I don't know what else there is to update or correct at this point.
There was one thing that occurred to me: When I was using XP, I had to disable Open GL in order to get Encore to stabilize. I've heard one recommendation for Encore that one must disable graphics acceleration. I would like try that here except I can't figure out how to do that in Windows 7.
I've been Googling "Windows 7 Disable Graphics Accel" and have come up with nothing useful.
Thanks for your help though and if you have any other ideas, I'm all ears.

  • How to determine which Windows application has focus

I'm new to JAVA and new to programming. I hope someone will help me out. I'm trying to write a simple JLink program (JLink is a JAVA API for Pro|Engineer, a CAD design program). In part of this program I need to determine if Pro|E has focus. Is there some way to use JAVA to determine which actively running Windows application has focus?
I basically want my program to pause when focus changes to another program. For example: While Pro|E is active and has focus the program runs, when I select an Excel window, or Outlook, or Notepad or any other window my program will pause until focus is returned. I just need to determine which window within Windows has focus.
I hope I have explained this properly. I searched the internet for an answer but found nothing. I did come across some references to JNI, but I'm not sure what that is or how to use it.
    Thank you!

I just need to determine which window within Windows has focus. No, you don't. All you need to determine is whether your application has the focus. If it doesn't, then some other application does, but it's really irrelevant which one does. All that's relevant is that your application doesn't have the focus and hence it should pause.

  • CS4 on Windows 8 computer- issues?

I purchased CS4 (Web Premium) on disc (from Adobe) several years ago, and it has been working fine on my Win XP computer ever since. The Adobe software has all the current updates, though I am using the CS4 version of Acrobat Pro (9.xx) rather that a more recent (free) version of Reader.,
Unfortunately, my computer's hard drive has fried, and I just purchased a new Windows 8 machine, which will arrive shortly.  I am trying to determine:
    1. Are there any general issues with CS4 installation on Win 8 that I should know about in advance?
    2. Are there specific procedures (de-activation?) that I need to follow BEFORE attempting the installation on the new computer?
    3. Other than specific user issues, are there problems with CS4 versus Windows 8 that I would not encounter with Windows 7.
I enhance photos and create web sites for a living, so the CS4 installation is mission-critical. I am hoping I did not make a mistake in ordering a Win 8 machine...
Thanks for any and all insights.

@SatMaster: I feel your pain. There are a couple of factors at play with Win8 and apparent incompatibility with certain software.
    1. Seems like different manufacturers install Win8 differently, and its interaction with their specific hardware/software may vary between models/makers.
    2. Win8 Home, Premium, and Pro behave differently from each other, and work differently in different environments.
    3. A Win8 upgrade to an existing machine/OS may cause different behavior than a clean Win8 installation on a new machine. (That's what I started with- a new machine. After initial removal of Dell, McAfee etc shovelware, I installed Adobe CS4 Web Premium, from discs, before anything else.)
I'm not surprised that your "clean" installation of Win7 led to success. You might have had the same result with Win8.  Overall, though Win8 is a departure from the Win95-XP-Vista-7 traditions/functionality, it is learnable and workable. So far, I find some tasks easier, and some harder. But once I open Photoshop on my dual monitors and start working on a picture, the OS doesn't really matter (although I did use a Mac at school for 3 months and hated it...).
Glad you kept your sanity. That's very important...

  • CS4 and Windows 8 compatibility

Has anyone successfully installed CS4 on Windows 8? I am currently using Windows XP and received a pop up saying Microsoft are no longer releasing updates for XP after August and I am entitled to a free download of Windows 8. I am trying to decide whether to do this but risk losing my use of CS4 which I really don't want to do. Any advice much appreciated as not sure whether to just continue with XP. Thanks in advance.

If you search Google using the terms "CS4 and Windows 8 compatibility" you can probably find various results from both Adobe and Microsoft that should give you some idea of how much of a gamble you might face in changing your OS.
In my own experience, a change in OS has yet to be a positive experience... while most people loved XP in its day, I suffered years of poor performance with it as an upgrade from the moment it was installed and regretted doing it.  Maybe you've had better experience and aren't as shy of it as I am.

  • 2 errors when trying to install cs4 on windows 7 ultimate x64

I downloaded the trial version of PS cs4 to try out on my new laptop.  Its a clean install of windows 7 ultimate x64.  I gets maybe 10% into the install and i keep getting these errors...
    Adobe ExtendScript Toolkit CS4
    Error:
Error 1612. The installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the source exists and that you can access it.
    Adobe Output Module
    Error:
Error 1610. The configuration data for this product is corrupt. Contact your support personnel.
If somebody could shed some light on what i can do to make this work that would be great.  Ive tried redownloading the installer probably 4 or 5 times now.  Ive tried running in compatability mode and ive made sure its being ran as an administrator.
    Thanks

Some of CS4 might be installed so you will need to run the clean script.

Just install photoshop and bridge only. You can install the other stuff later on (not need to run bridge nor PS anyways)
Do the install only on C drive too.

  • Which Windows OS should I chose to run Autocad/Revit?

I purchased a Mac Book Pro for my son in college (OS 10.5). He needs to run Autocad & Revit for his classes. We've decided to use boot camp instead of parallels or other options. My question is how do we know which windows OS to chose? I've heard Vista has had problems. is there a reason to use a professional version as opposed to standard? All help is appreciated. Steve.

If I was starting out, and new I had to run Windows natively...
    a) Vista has been out about two years
    b) there are issues with anything
    c) does Revit and Autocad recommend any hardware spec
I would have gotten a PC with Intel Core i7 920, 6GB DDR3 memory, high end graphics, and either Home Premium 64-bit or Ultimate. Price: $1300 plus cost of hard drive, graphics, and OS, that would plow through and flatten any work load.

  • Bootcamp on Lion--but which Windows 7 ?

I'm finally considering a bootcamp install of Windows 7 and am completely overwhelmed by the plethora of different Windows 7 versions available... Professional? Home? Ultimate? 32-bit? 64-bit?
I intend to do this mostly to play games—at this point, specifically Rift and EvE.
    My system:
    late 2009 27" iMac
    2.8 GHz Intel Core i7
    4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB
    OS X 10.7.2
with well over 460 GB HD space to spare.
If anyone could take a moment and give me their recommendation on which Windows flavor I should choose, I would greatly appreciate the help!
    Thanks!

    I'm just a home/gamer type Windows user.
I have W7 Home Premium 64bit and works fine for me. I was worried about some of my older stuff but haven't had an issue yet, i've had it about 8 months now.
W7 Pro (for $100 more) which I think is just Home Premium with XP built in so you can go into XP mode to run some older stuff that won't work in W7. And from what I can figure out Ultimate, etc, is set up more for business's.
Windows 64bit you can use ALL the available ram and 32bit is maxed out between 2 and 3 gigs no matter how much ram you have installed. Most of the Retail/Upgrade versions have 32bit and 64bit installers combined so you can use either one. If the applications are written for a 64bit OS then it will run that much faster.
    My 2 cents worth anyway....

  • How to findout for which product category extended classic is activated?

    Dear experts,
How to find out for which product category extended classic is activated? I am working in a test system. In spro settings, Cross aplication basic settings -> activate extended classic is unticked.
I see, the system allows me to create a Extended classic PO against a product category 001.
The product category has same ECC backend  system as target and source system.
    Is there any BADI implementation?
    regards,

    Hi
ECS - flag activated - means Extended classic scenario.
target determine badi - helps to create a PO in desired place.
source system and tatget system logical entry sjhown means
PRODUCT CATEGORY - created in Backend system and follow on docuemnts also created in ECC system - so it could be Classic .
as jay said determine log system badi used for DECOUPLE scenario ( Classic as well as ECS) .

  • File Access Denied Error trying to load Photoshop CS4 on Windows 7

I am trying to load Photoshop CS4 on Windows 7 64bit & I keep getting File Access Denied. I am unable to read to the disk or to load the program. I do not have the option to open as administrator.

So when you put the disk in it won't run correctly? When the disk is inserted you should have a window pop up with 2 options. 1 to install and the other to see what is on the disk. Choose to explore or open the disk. Go to the CS4 folder where the photoshop .exe file is (that will run the setup), right click on the .exe file and choose run as Admin and it should start. See if it will install. If not then read below.
I am not sure how far you got in the install before so chances are you will have to run the CS4 cleanup utility. 2 levels to run at but don't use 1 or 2 just type in the number 3.
    http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cs4clean.html
You may need to run the windows installer cleanup utility too
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
Before you try to reinstall the software ensure that adobe reader is not installed. If it is remove it. It has caused issues in the past with vista and CS4 installs.
Also turn off windows Defender and any anti-virus software. You can keep UAC on in Windows 7.
During the CS4 install at 90 percent it will almost stop and may take 5 to 10 mins to finish. This is normal. What a pain huh......
    After install is finished, reboot
After reboot, go to the CS4 64 bit or 32 bit icon (depends on 32 or 64 bit Windows 7) in start area, right click on CS4 64 bit (if you have windows 7 64 bit) and choose properties, compatibility tab and then check run as Admin at the bottom area. Hit apply, ok to close out.
Now start CS4 and run the updater.
