CS6 Could Not Save "filename" Because File is Locked

For many years I have been edit photo montages in Premiere Pro. When I would find a photo that needs retouching so I would open Photoshop, retouch the pic, save it, and the new image would magically appear on the PPro timeline. But in my CS6 suite, I get the error message "Could not save "filename" because file is locked, you do not have necessary access permissions, or another program is using the file".  And this only happens when PPro is still open, regardless of where the CTI is on the timeline, or which pic on the timeline is selected. I never had this problem with any other versions of PPro and Photoshop. I don't want to shut down PPro everytime I need to retouch a pic.

That sounds like you've found a bug in PPro where it keeps the files open and locked when it shouldn't.
Unfortunately, you posted in the Photoshop forum where we can't help much with Premiere.
You probably want to post in the Premiere forum: http://forums.adobe.com/community/premiere/premierepro_current

It seems you lack the rights to change the file, so you may want to repair permissions.
    Do you have administrator rights?

  • Photoshop CS 5.5 - "Could not save [filename] because the file is locked..........."

    Hi,
We have a few iMacs here all running 10.8.4 - we have PhotoShop CS 5.5 and all the artwork etc is saved on a shared server ( Windows 2008 r2)   and we are forever getting these problems......
Only in photoshop we get the following error message......
"Could not save [filename] because the file is locked or you do not have the necessary access privilege. Use the 'Get info' command in the finder to unlock the file or change permissions on the file or enclosing folders"
Can't see this been an access issue so really don't know whats causing this other than the fact it's just server based...
    Please please please somebody help.

I have been hqving this issue on windows after I upgraded to internet explorer 10 and using outlook (hotmail.com) to attach images to an email.
After a file saved via photoshop (i assum any programe not just photoshop will cause this problem) is attached in outlook to an email, IE10 will not let go of that file.  meaning if you update the image in Photoshop and try and save over the existing jpg you previously attached it will give this error, file locked or file permissions needed etc.
Just posting this info incase you are using email to attach files and then getting these permisssion problems.
I work around it by closing the outlook browser tab (the email), so it lets go of the file, I can then save ontop of the file no problem, I then open outlook as needed.

  • Could not save *.* because file is in use or was left open...

OK, I mentioned this when it happened with .eps files, and rather than get a single useful tip(Except for 'choose a new file name'), I got a series of responses from people telling me how I should be saving in .tiff and 'eps files aren't any good anyway, etc., etc... IN other words, no help, just a bunch of opinions on what I was doing wrong in the first place.
Well, now I have had it happen with a .tiff file. I opened the file, did some work, and went to re-save it, and I got the error that it could not save the file because it was in use, or had been left open.
Anybody got any suggestions on why this is happening?

If you have not already done so, update to Photoshop Lightroom 1.3. In
Photoshop Lightroom, choose Help > Check For Updates. You can also
download the update from the Product Updates page on the Adobe website.
Try specify Photoshop CS3 as the Additional External Editor in your

    - Click the Lightroom menu and choose Preferences.
    - Click the External Editing tab.
    - Click the Choose button under the Additional External Editor

  • Could not save preferences because the file could not be found (Windows) then Error 1 on PS,AE,PR,ID

I was trying out Photoshop, everything was running fine then one day when I close it I get an error:
"Could not save preferences because the file could not be found..."
Now when I boot it I get the Configuration Error 1.
After Effects still boots, but it reset all my preferences there. For example the workplace layout was reset, all my saved Output presets were removed and my memory-cache and performance settings were reset again.
Premiere and InDesign get the error too and won't boot.
This is the second time it has happened, I'll try wiping every Adobe program and reinstalling all over again, but it had run fine before for a while and it randomly happened.
Any idea how to fix this?

Nope I havent touched the Documents folder.
Forgot to mention that I'm on Windows 7

Solved it after 8 hours of trying.
Hold down "Command" "option" and "shift" keys and open Photoshop. It will ask if you want to delete settings. Say Yes. You will have to reset everything but it clears the problem away instantly.

  • Help please! "Could not save as *** because the file...."

I'm getting this error message when I try to save my files and it is happening often enough that it bothers me. This is very sudden - within the last week or two. I have Photoshop CS5, using Windows 7. I get the error message "Could not save as *** because the file is already in use or was left open by another application."
I haven't done anything new to my computer or installed anything new, I've been using CS5 successfully since this summer when I first installed it on this brand new computer. Not sure why it's doing this now.
When it happens, it does leave a .tmp file behind with each instance. I saved one this time just in case it's needed to determine the problem - normally I just delete it and try again. When I try multiple times, it eventually saves. But when I'm a professional photographer and have 100's of images to save, I just can't deal with this problem. Can anyone help? I'd be grateful!

Are you saying you've disabled Spyware Doctor and it now works?  I'd toss that software out in a heartbeat if so.  Anti-malware software that interferes with your normal operation of your computer is not something to be accepted!
Microsoft's Windows Defender is a decent substitute.  I also personally prefer Avast Pro antivirus.  Both are unobtrusive.

  • Song could not be used because file could not be found

I recently had to purchase a new computer which came with the new Windows Vista. I had Windows XP before and from that computer I backed up ITunes on external hard drive. I have authorized this computer and installed Itunes and added the music back to folder. I can see all the music but I cannot play them due to the error song could not be used. I am having problems with the IPod and need to hook it up to computer to reset it. I am afraid it will mess up. What do I need to do? How can I get the music to play in library and if I hook up IPod will it mess it up more? Thanks for any help!!

I'm an Apple N00B and would be nice to see this answered (by Apple or someone that knows whats going on) - I realize this is a public forum, but in Googling "song could not be used because file could not be found" you (and me!) are not the only ones having this problem -
My situation is, that I BOUGHT a song from iTunes last night, it synched to my iPod OK - but in going thru iTunes today, I see the bang "!" next to the song... and not knowing all the icons yet for iTunes - it gives me that error - Saying it can't locate the song - would you (me) like to find it? - Yes, I BOUGHT it so would be nice to HAVE...
Point being, it IS on my iPod Classic - but is not on my PC??? How is this possible -
Furthermore - Since I bought it - and obviously I have it on my iPod now, but somehow is now "lost" on my PC (iTunes folder shows empty - for that song) - You'd think that either iTunes would be SMART enough to pull it from my iPod and save it to the folder (as the Album art shows in iTunes too???!) - Or that iTunes home page would recognize the "sale" and the "missing" song, and re-download it?? W-T-F Apple?
FWIW, for grins, I went back and tried to re-download the missing song - and was eager to SELL it to me again...
Again, I'm new to Apple and iTunes - so maybe there's a quick and easy fix for this - Yeah yeah - call me a Windows idiot - but suspect I'm not alone with this problem... or that it's not just a Windows issue -
    Any thoughts?
    TIA -

  • Could not Save As because write access was not granted

I get an Error Message every time I try to Save As my Image after working with them on my iMac why?
here the Message I get it: Could not Save As because write access was not granted,I try both JPG & PSD.Thanks

You could start by repairing permissions with Disk Utility and go over the usual trouble-shooting routines (trashing prefs by keeping ctrl-alt-shift pressed while starting Photoshop, 3rd party plug-ins deactivation, system maintenance etc.)?
Edit: Of course you could also manually check the permissions for the file, the folder, the folder the folder resides in etc. (File > Get Info in the Finder).
And just to make sure: You are saving to a local volume and not across a network?

  • Mac: Could not save PREFERENCES because .....

Could not save Preferences because the file is locked or you do not have the necessary access privileges. Use the ‘Get Info’ command in the Finder to unlock the file or change permissions on the file or enclosing folders.
I have just installed CS5 as an upgrade to my CS3 on my MAc Pro that is running Leopard OS X 10.5.8. The electronic download and installation went very well. I could open CS5 and did work on editing some images, and all seemed to be working fine, until I quitted Photoshop CS5. I got the above message and similar ones for my Workspace changes. The Photoshop CS5 program did not allow me to save any changes in my Preferences, custom Brushes or Workspace.
I have full read/write privileges to my computer and I could not find any file or folder, related to Adobe CS5, that is LOCKED. I have never encountered this 'insufficient privileges' problem with any of my other program installation, including CS3 and lately the Lightroom 3. Please help!!

    Hi Slau104,
I had the same problem, and have just found the answer elsewhere on this forum.
It has worked perfectly for me. Here it is…
Just go to Users\Library\Preferences\Adobe Photoshop CS5\ and change the  permissions on the folder.  I just changed the "Everyone" variable to  "Read & Write" and Photoshop started up without issue.

  • Can't Save Preferences Because File is Locked?

I just had to reinstall after a wipe of my Mac.  Program opens, I can use it, but when I quit it I get this message:
Could not save preferences because the file is locked or you do no have the necessary privilieges.  Use the "get info" command in the Finder to unlock or change permissions on the file or enclosing folders.
I went into Applications, right clicked on the CS5 icon, which brought up the "get Info" box.  At the bottom, under Sharing & Permissions it says I have custome access; Me: read & write
    System, read & write
    Admin, read & write
    everyone, read only
On the "everyone" the only choices I have are read only, write only or no access.
    How can I fix this?

The preferences are not written into the application, so you're looking in the wrong place. The main preferences file for CS5 should be:
    ~/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings/Adobe Photoshop CS5 Prefs.psp
To locate it, copy the following path, press Shift+Cmd+G in Finder, paste the path and hit Go:
    ~/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings/
If you have Ps CS5.1, replace "CS5" with "CS5.1" in the above.
