CSS in Windows Browsers?

Hi,
I did a little test programing to see how CSS works. My
question is this. I have a blue box with some text written inside
of it. It's a rollover button. In OSX everything seems to work as
expected. In Windows on F.Fox and Netscape it works, but the text
is wrapping into two lines instead of coming up as one. In
Explorer, same thing with text, but when the button is clicked, and
I go back to the page with the css button, the text has
disappeared. Could someone enlighten me as to why this is
happening? Also, are there any general guidelines I should follow
with CSS?

Thanks!

What IE/Win does with the a:active state is, in my opinion, a
dependable
behavior. If you click a link, you normally go to a new page,
so the
active state hardly matters. If you click a link to return to
the page,
the first link is no longer the active link (the link on the
other page
now is.) However, if you use the back button to return to the
page, you
have not clicked a link as such, and so the first link is
still active,
and shows whatever properties you have given a:active. You
can see this
even more clearly in a frameset where you click a link to
change a
different frame. That link is active until you click another
one. I
assume that IE/Win thought that keeping the link in the
active state
until another link is clicked on (or until you just click
somewhere else
on the page) would serve as a small UI feature by showing you
the latest
link you clicked on, just as using the visited state shows
you links you
have clicked on recently (how long ago depends on browser
settings.)
Unfortunately, as far as I know, no other browser does this,
but instead
shows the active state for fraction of a second and then
immediately
goes to the visited state. Since these browsers do this, it
is tempting
(and I was once tempted, to my confusion) to use the active
state to
simulate a kind of button-press effect by making it the same
color as
the background so it briefly disappears before reappearing as
a:visited.
I haven't found anywhere a specification about which state to
show when,
but I didn't look very hard. IE/Win's behavior makes the
most sense to
me since a link naturally seems "active" (meaning "current")
to me until
you click another one, but I don't know if IE is right or
wrong to do
so. Or if there is even a specification somewhere about this.

The statistics vary, but for virtually all sites, the
majority of people
out there are using IE/Win. We will have to deal with it for
years to
come. My personal site shows, however, that Firefox has made
great gains:
Internet Explorer 58%
6.0 56%
5.5 <1%
7.0 <1%
5.01 <1%
5.0 <1%
5.23 <1%
5.14 <1%
5.17 <1%
Firefox 25%
Safari 8%
Opera 7%
Mozilla 1%
Camino <1%
Netscape <1%
AppleWebKit (Generic) <1%
but this is a site whose visitors mostly come from this news
groups or
its archive (web developers) and people looking for images
via search
engines. I get very little "off the street" traffic, so the
statistics
are not at all representative of anything except the people
who come to
my site.

  • Socket.close doesn't work in Windows browsers?

I've been trying to figure this out for days and I can't seem to find anything on why this is happening or how to fix it.
I have an FTP program written that uploads ByteArrays through sockets.  It works great on my Mac!  I open a command connection, then a data connection, send the ByteArray and then use socket.close() on my data connection.  This causes the server to disconnect me and sends the 226:transfer succeeded message back through my command connection.
The problem is that in IE8, FF 3.5, and Safari 4 on Windows the socket.close() func does not make the server close the connection.  The fact that it works in all of my Mac browsers, and the IDE, but not in Windows browsers makes me think that it's something to do with the Flash Player.  Is this possible?
    My FP version check data:
    MAC 10,0,32,18
    WIN 10,0,32,18
Does anyone know how I can fix, or even debug, this?

does anyone have any idea what could be going on here?  am i completely out to lunch?

  • Corrupted images in windows browsers

Can anyone help? I have made a site which has a number of jpeg images created in photoshop, using "save for web & devices" etc. They are set to 120 dpi and reduced to fit. The site looks fine in browserlab when viewed with chrome, safari and the latest windows browsers. However, in some earlier windows browsers the images are corrupted and not rendered properly, with blurred, wavy edges and unintelligible type. Sometimes, they have disappeared.
    How can I correct this?

They are set to 120 dpi and reduced to fit.
This is really not relavent for Web development since Web dimensions are set in px, not dpi.
For best results, resize the images to the exact pixel dimensions used on your Web page and then save the image at whatever compression value give you acceptable results.... the more compression used the smaller the file size (not the dimensions) but the quality is also reduced.

what do I convert my swf website banner file to so it will work in websites displayed in mac and windows browsers?

If its animated you'll want to convert it to an FLV file and embed it in your webpage.

Otherwise a standard JPEG or PNG image file should suffice.

  • Audio Not working in Windows Browsers

I have a flash site that was designed using Flash CS3... this site contains an audio that starts playing in the background as soon as the person lands on the home page. This past week, I changed out the leading image and repackaged the site using Flash CS4. Now the audio works in Mac browsers (Safari and FireFox), but not in Windows browsers (IE and Firefox)... any ideas where to begin in trouble shooting this?
    the site: http://thesunshinefactory.com
Note: there is a on/off toggle in the upper left corner... (also, I inherited this flash design so, I'm still digging through all the layers - let me know if I need to provide code)

  • Stuff not showing up in windows browsers

I put html on my webpage
    [www.myspace.com/distortionbetweenlines]
in safari, but when my friends look at it on their windows browsers the scrollboxes show up only as a gray box. It shows up fine in safari though. I'm very confused. Can someone please help?

In looking at your page, it could be because you have chosen too light a font color and that Windows machines are blending the font and the box together. Try making the font a bit darker and have your friends check it out.

  • Firefox doesn' see css files, other browsers do recognize css files. Please, help me.

I'm creating the web-site. it is currently on the development level. the link is http://snazhmudinov.byethost7.com/

  • Dreamweaver CS5 25% CPU, crash state, CSS Styles window stops updating

Hi, has anyone else found their app in the state where it starts using 25% CPU continually, with the exe not closing after the app window closes?  When this happens, right before, I'll notice that when I select an element in the design or code windows, or the breadcrumbs style selector at the bottom of these two windows, the CSS Styles window will not update to show the current selection's properties.
For me, I've encountered this after being in Inspect mode, and then some how maybe I alt-tab or click in another window without having first selected an item with the Inspector.  At least, I think this is when it happens.  I'll be in th emiddle of something in DW like modifying a CSS property, then realize I need to go look in Illustrator or something to see how big an image was, then come back and stuff stops working properly.  But not always!  Seems to happen to me with my style of working about once per hour, really annoying.  Can't wait for CS6!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

darn, I put this in the wrong forum.  Is it possible to move it?

  • How do I turn the CSS Rule Window off?

How do I turn the CSS Rule Window off?
Please don't say "you really should learn the use of CSS".  I create my own CSS for many years just fine without the nuisance of a popup window.

Yes, I would also like to know how to turn-off the CSS rule.
I support a user who has been using DreamWeaver for years and was recently forced to upgrade to the new version. None of the hundreds of files in the site he maintains use CSS. While I recognize it is a "better" and "more efficient" way to do things --- IF you're a sofware engineer -- it is not even close to being worth the cost to revise the entire site and retrain this user.
So, how can i turn off, not just the pop-up, but how I can tell DW to just go ahead and do it the old-fashioned, embedded in the HTML way of doing things?
All the user wants to do is change the color of some keywords, css is overkill when that's all he's doing.
We'd go back to the previous version except the office was forced onto Vista and the older version won't run.

  • Wiki Server will not play embedded MP3 files in Windows Browsers

I have a brand new cleanly installed OS X Server running on a Fall 2012 Mac Mini. I have created a Wiki where I am uploading .mp3 recordings of classes for people to listen to online or download.
I can access the wiki and "quicklook" the MP3s in Safari on a Mac and iPad but I cannot on any Windows based web browser or in Chrome on my iPad or Mac. In Chrome on windows or an iPad the Quicklook preview window appears but no sound ever plays. In Firefox on Windows the preview window appears and plays a few seconds of audio and then stops.
I have mutliple wikis like this set up on Snow Leopard Server and they work just fine in all browsers. This appears to be a bug with OS X Server 10.8 v.2.2.
Any suggestions or does anyone know if there will be a fix for this anytime soon?
Between this issue, the fact that I cannot successfully migrate my old wikis from Snow Leopard Server to Mountain Lion Server, and the fact that I cannot run Snow Leopard Server on newer Mac hardware, Apple seems to be wanting me to jump ship and abandon their platform.

Use the Provide Server Feedback Button in the Server app under the About section.

  • Site recently hacked, now FF won't display css style - other browsers will

So my site beaq.org.au was recently hacked - a phishing attack. A .php file was uploaded to the css directory it seems. My host promptly removed the css directory, and I replaced it with a backed up css directory. Problem solved! (or so I would have hoped)...
This did solve the problem in all browsers I have tested in - except Firefox. The site looks as it should in safari, IE, chrome etc. CSS style is used, but FF won't use it. I believe this is a result of the site being reported as an attack site...for example, if I choose preferences > security and then uncheck "Block reported web forgeries", then reload the page - it loads as it should.
I have requested removal from the forgery list here: http://www.google.com/safebrowsing/report_error/?tpl=mozilla
And the site is not listed as containing malware in Google Webmaster tools. So nothing to do there.
Is it simply a matter of waiting till firefox recognises the site as not being a web forgery or containing malware? Is there something else that can be done to resolve problem? Or is there something that could be done to expedite the removal from FF's list of phishing / attack sites?
It's been over a week already and still waiting. Not a good look having a website that is completely messed up. Thanks for your help in advance!

I hadn't checked that link, but I can confirm that the CSS file isn't loaded because of a block via the phishing protection.<br />
Google Chrome doesn't even open the main page and immediately shows the phishing warning page.
    <blockquote>Warning: Suspected phishing site!<br />
The website at www.beaq.org.au has been reported as a “phishing” site. Phishing sites trick users into disclosing personal or financial information, often by pretending to represent trusted institutions, such as banks.</blockquote>

  • CSS - Display issues browsers

    These two sites:
    www.k9countrycottage.com and www.mcgahanranch.com are having
display issues in browers. k9countrycottage in the left hand column
the navigation is pushed down. It only has issues in all versions
    of Explorer.
In mcgahanranch, there is space inserted above the sidebar
and the maincontent and it occurs across all browsers. I've used
the CSS out of the box for the two column fixed column width for
    both sites.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

  • CSS scrolling window for thumbnails

Hello, I'm in the process of designing my first CSS portfolio
site. I have a lot of thumbnails and frankly they look a mess
because there are so many. Therefore I want to contain them within
some kind of simple scrolling window.
My question: Is this possible using CSS? Does anyone have any
    suggestions?
    Thanks, DT.

Yes, but only in IE/PC. In other words, it's not worth your
    time/effort....

  • Password action doesn't want to work on Windows browsers

As a few others have noted in this forum, the Password action which is (or was) provided with GoLive CS2 does not seem to work with IE7 browsers (or other browsers on Windows). When the user clicks on a link which contains the Password action, their browser jumps straight to the "You have not entered a password" or "Password incorrect" (I don't know the exact message because I'm on a Mac) without prompting the user to enter a password. Is there a replacement or fix for this action? (By the way, it still works perfectly on a Mac with any browser!)
