CUPS can't locate network printer

I don't know if this is a network issue, or a PKGBUILD issue.
I have a Brother printer that is not one of the ones for which there is an AUR package already. So I just copied a PKGBUILD and .install from a similar model's AUR package. Here they are:
PKGBUILD:
# Based on brother-mfc-j625dw package from AUR
_model="j435w"
pkgname="brother-mfc-$_model"
pkgver="3.0.0"
pkgrel=1
_revision=1
pkgdesc="LPR and CUPS driver for the Brother MFC-J435W"
url="http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/index.html"
arch=('i686' 'x86_64')
license='unknown'
install="brother-mfc-${_model}.install"
depends=('tcsh' 'deb2targz' 'perl' 'a2ps')
if test "$CARCH" == x86_64; then
depends+=(lib32-glibc)
fi
source=("http://www.brother.com/pub/bsc/linux/dlf/mfc${_model}lpr-${pkgver}-${_revision}.i386.deb"
"http://www.brother.com/pub/bsc/linux/dlf/mfc${_model}cupswrapper-${pkgver}-${_revision}.i386.deb")
build() {
deb2targz *.deb >/dev/null || return 1
rm -f *.deb || return 1
cd $srcdir || return 1
[ -d "mfc${_model}" ] || (mkdir mfc${_model} || return 1)
for i in *.tar.gz;do tar xfz $i -C mfc${_model};done || return 1
cd mfc${_model} || return 1
cd opt/brother/Printers/mfc${_model} || return 1
perl -i -pe 's#/etc/init.d#/etc/rc.d#g' ./cupswrapper/cupswrappermfc${_model} || return 1
perl -i -pe 's#printcap\.local#printcap#g' $srcdir/mfc${_model}/opt/brother/Printers/mfc${_model}/inf/setupPrintcapij || return 1
cp -rf $srcdir/mfc${_model}/usr/ $pkgdir/ || return 1
cp -rf $srcdir/mfc${_model}/opt/ $pkgdir/ || return 1
md5sums=('7f891cbaddc07a1b86902c9c67cbcccb'
'8756f5964a9f9f811cc1b855f7593c2f')
brother-mfc-j435w.install:
post_install() {
post_upgrade;
post_upgrade() {
/opt/brother/Printers/mfcj435w/cupswrapper/cupswrappermfcj435w >/dev/null
if [ "$?" -eq 0 ]; then
printf "\033[1m\033[32m\x3d\x3d\x3e\033\1330m Done. The printer should be visible now via the CUPS-webinterface (http://localhost:631)\n"
else
printf "\033[1m\032[32m\x3d\x3d\x3e\033\1330m Something went wrong...\n"
fi
So, then I open up the CUPS web interface and voila, I see MFCJ435W ready to go! So, I print a test page and it fails with "Unable to locate printer "BRN0080928DFDD8.local"."
I have no idea what to do to diagnose and fix my problem. Help?

Do you have a mdns service configured? I am not sure if this is related, but zeroconf/avahi's .local domains get resolved by a multicast dns infrastructure:

    I have a iPhone 4S and a Cannon Printer with AirPrint. I have the printer and the iPhone both on the same network, however I still can't locate the printer on the phone. Works just fine with the laptop on the same network. Any suggestions?

    ok no problem! all i did was 1) set up the mobile hotspot on my phone. 2)  turn it and wifi on on the phone. 3)  connect the laptop/desktop to the hotspot network. 4) insert setup disk for the printer and begin setup. 5) complete the setup "using a usb cord to temporarilly connect the computer and printer" 6) unplug usb cable and finish set up on the laptop/desktop. 7) give it a few minutes to show up on the AirPrint menu on the phone. 8) that should be it. I unplugged the printer and plugged it back in, made sure the laptop was totally turned off AND disconnected from the network, and did everything I could to try and make it not work. The printer I have is a Canon MG3122, it doesn't have a fancy screen or even a way to input a password or anything like that, so it just strores a default network that it will connect to. in order to change networks i would have to complete setup multiple times. Since I only plan to use it with AirPrint for my mobile business....the one network is just fine! Hope this helps!

  • Can't locate wifi printer

    I just had a router change to Netgear and after stting up my printer (Brother MFC 490CW) and my iMac wireless to it, my computer can't locate the printer as it has done with the old router. Any help on this please?

    Care to share which OS you are using?
    Read the user manual that came w/your printer.  Should be instructions in there regarding wireless set up.  Also, contact Brother Support if their user manual is of no help.

  • Can not add network printer

    Hi.
    I installed HP Laserjet Pro P1102 on win 7, I checked it for sharing. trying to add it on winxp on same router but is not detected. I d/led file The HP Home Network Diagnostic Utility application "HPHNDU.exe" on pc that printer is attached to, can not find network printer.
    Please help - Thanks.
    Sinan

    It might be possible to do this with an Airport Express. Your AE joins the network and the printer is connected to the AE. If you can get it cheap (g speed is OK).

    "Add a Printer" can't locate my printer software even though it has been downloaded to the hard drive. How can I guide it to the software?

    What did you download and from where?  Most downloads go to your Home/User/Downloads folder unless you've specified a different location in your browser.
    If you downloaded the drivers from the App Store the drivers will be installed automatically and all you need to do is go to the System/Printers & Scanners preference pane as described below.
    You will have to install the drivers after downloading the installer package.  Lastly go to the System/Printers & Scanners preference pane and add the printer there.  It will automatically locate the drivers and set it up.

  • Cups / HP Laserjet 4200 network printer

    Cups can get on my nerves bigtime.
    at first, I just installed cups, and soffice (libreoffice) would , in the 'print dialog' show me a bunch of network printers it found, but when i printed to any of them,
    the job would just stick to 'in process' in the cups webinterface, even though the printer was idle.
    I then installed hplip 3.11.1-1, hpoj 0.91-15, avahi and a whole bunch of other packages:

    however, now the printers don't show up anymore in soffice, nor in the webinterface.  *sometimes* when I search for printers, it will show them, but not always.
    and when it shows them, it only shows the model and type, not the human assigned name/description (which I saw at first)

    Add to that the fact that even though I go to localhost:631 or 127.0.0.1:631, cups generates links to my external ip, which is the interface cups doesn't listen on.

    those errors are from *before* I installed avahi, after installing avahi I can't even select the printer :x

    a bit more info: after a reboot i somehow magically see the printers again (both in the webinterface and in soffice), but when I send it a print job, I notice the printer status is
    Idle - "Connecting to printer..."
    so maybe this is some kind of networking problem? weirdly enough location is set to "location unknown" so I cannot do a ping test.
    and the only errors in the logfile are "SSL shutdown failed: Error in the push function" (probably because of using https on the webinterface), so I'm clueless

  • Tried both ways in the Wiki, still can't get network printing work

    Hi,
    I have tried both the client and server ways following the Wiki, still could not get network printing work.
    For the first way, I tried to put either the host name or the ip address (starting with 192) of the remote printer into /etc/cups/client.conf. But both Okular and Evince failed to see the printer in the dialog.
    For the second way, with cups-browsed running, it only managed to discover printers in my local network (ip starting with 137) which I have no access. I tried to manually add the printer using its ip, but it still did not work.
    What can I do? I have spent hours trying to work it out but failed. I would appreciate a lot your help. Thanks.

    Have you looked at the previous discussions listed on the right side of this page under the heading "More Like This"? Ones with a green checkmark are solved.

  • Where can I locate my print code?

    I have a HP photosmart D110 all in one and im trying to locate my print code so I can link my other laptops.  PLEASE HELP !!

  • Can't add network printer to my PC

    I have an HP Color LaserJet 2605dn connected thru a USB port to a 5-year old computer running XP Home Edition with SP-2.  The printer is designated a shared computer.  I also have a Linksys wireless home network that operates flawlessly in every respect except for the problem below.
    When I try to add the printer to my new HP Pavilion running Vista Home Premium with SP-1 (64-bit), I get a message saying the server for the printer does not have the correct printer driver installed.  When I pursue the "add printer" process to the bitter end, I get a Printer driver setup error (error Ox800f0214).
    Can anyone tell me the name of the driver file that is missing, where I can find it, and how I can install it?

    ON the Vista Home Premium x64 system go to Control Panel -->Printer --> select add printer and select network printer. Stop there. Now Click on the driver you downloaded from here. Once you begin the install with the exe file the wizard(that is already running)  should see the driver and install it. Alternatively you could browse for it with \\computername\printername (substituting your own relevant network names for the devices)
    Have you tried physically moving it and installing the printer at the x64 system and then phyically moving it back to the other system where you already have it installed?   I know that beast is heavy.
    Another option; Use universal extractor  and extract the drivers from the.exe files. Then you can easily see which one will work when you extract themto a folder and browse there when you add the printer and the location of the driver is needed.

  • Can't find network printer

    I've got a HP Photosmart Plus installed on my network. I install it on every computer in the house (4 computers), and then it works.
    But when I close the computer and restart, the computer can't find the printer.
    It's still connected to the network, that I can see if I open my router.
    The only way is to reinstall the printer, but sometimes the computer can't find the printer to install.
    This happens on both W7 oand W8.
    Anyone knows whats wrong.

    These settings are for setting up your wireless printer to stay connected to your router, keep wireless devices better connected and makes your router secure and hack proof.
    1. Set a static IP in the printer (click here) outside the DHCP range of the router (check your manual).
       This is for Linksys routers but can be used for all routers. Verify your DHCP range and change this
       first if needed. More Wireless Printing help is here (Windows solution 4, static IP).
    2. Verify in the printer that 'Auto Off/Sleep' is disabled.  Use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) by going
       to the printers IP address in your browsers address bar, click Settings Tab/Auto Off. Or use the Printer
       Assistant, Printer Home Page (EWS). Also check your Printers Properties.
    3. If the printer supports and has IPv6 enabled, turn off IPv6 in the printer.
    4. If needed and you assigned a static IP address, try using 8.8.8.8 for the Preferred DNS server and
         8.8.4.4 at the Alternate DNS server.
    In the router: (Refer to your router manual for information)
    5. Use a fixed wireless channel like 1, 6 or 11, never 'auto', try channel 1 first then the rest.
    6. Set router to 20Mhz only, or 145Mbps depending on router.
    7. Always use WPA2-AES (Personal) encryption, but you can try ‘mixed’ mode.
    8. Disable WPS and never use it and disable UPnP for the routers security. Nobody can hack your
       system now and helps with wireless connectivity (if you want to know why, search the web).
    9. If you have a dual band router (2.4Ghz and 5.0Ghz bands), make sure the SSID’s are NOT the same,
       they must be different for all bands, even for any Guest networks.
    10. SSID broadcast must be enabled.
    11. Save all settings. Power off both, wait 2 mins.  Power on router wait 2 mins.
    12. Power on printer and verify it reconnects to router.
    Windows 7/8/8.1   Is Network Discovery on or off?
    Control Panel/Network and Internet/Network and Sharing Center/Advanced sharing settings.
    Under Home or Work (current profile) / Network Discovery.
    Select "Turn on network discovery" and save changes

  • Setup can't detect network printer Photosmart C7250 all in one

    I volunteer for our local historical society.  The person who did a lot of the computer maintenance work is not active at this time so I’ve begun to look at things.
    There is a Gateway PC running Windows 7 64 bit home premium, a Sony Vio laptop running Vista 32 bit  home premium, an HP Laser printer and (of most importance here) an HP Photosmart C7250 All in one printer.
    Internet connectivity is via a dsl line with a combination modem/router.  I think the modem/router is a Westell or an Actiontec through Frontier Communications (formerly Verizon in this area)  but I’m not sure and I’m not at the museum now.
    A couple of weeks ago I was able to connect the laptop to the network via wifi.  My next step is to connect the laptop wirelessly to the printer so we can print wirelessly over the network.  The printer was originally set up through a usb connection so I changed it to a wired Ethernet connection.  The PC now successfully prints to the printer over the network.  I downloaded the software and drivers directly to the laptop from the HP site and began the installation.  When it got to the point of finding the network printer the software couldn’t detect it.  I then put in the ip address for the printer (from the network info printed out from the printer) and it still couldn’t find it.
    This same situation occurred when I tried to set it up on my personal laptop (Win7 , 64 bit) as well.  Setup couldn’t detect the network printer, even after searching for the network ip address.
    Since the printer is connected to the network (router) via an Ethernet cable, I don’t have the wifi radio turned on in the printer.  This shouldn’t make any difference.
    I’ve searched the forums and haven’t seen anything that is like my issue.
    I don’t what else to do.  Hopefully someone will give me some advice on what to do next.

    Download and run this utility: http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Nav?h_pagetype=s-926&h_lang=en&h_client=s-h-e17-1&h_keyword=dg-NDU&ju...
    What does it say?
    If the network has Wireless Isolation turned on it will prevent wired devices from seeing wireless devices.  Do you have access to the router?

  • Can't locate AppleTalk printer on my net

    I have a NEC Silentwriter 95f I haven't used in a while. I'm waiting for my regular inkjet to be replaced by Epson and trying to get this (network) laser printer on-line. It doesn't appear in the Chooser on my older Mac (or in Classic). Within OS X (10.3.9) it appears in the printer list and I can select it to print to but does not respond when attempting to print. (In the AppleTalk sub-menu the "Printer Model: Auto Select" is greyed out.)
    I don't remember changing anything since it last worked. The Silentwriter is connected to an AsanteTalk box which is in turn connected to a NetGear hub. Everything is powered, Appletalk is turned on and I've checked and swapped cables as a precaution. My main test for seeing if it's on the network is using the Chooser on an older Mac where it used to appear reliably. Selecting LaserWriter nothing appears in the Postscript printer list. The printer works to the extent I can print a self-test page but I really don't know where to go next in trying to isolate the problem. I'd really appreciate any suggestions.
    Thanks in advance,
    Paul Dougherty
    p.s. I have AppleCare for my newer Macs but network printers seems to be excluded re. support

    I'm having a similar problem. I have a LaserWriter Select 360 that I'd like to use with my G5 tower. First I tried a USB to parallel adapter. I could not get the Mac to find the printer. I figured the preinstalled printer driver expected to connect via ethernet, so...
    Then I tried using an an Appletalk to ethernet adapter to connect the printer to an Airport Express. I still could not get the Mac to find the printer.
    I tried using IP printing by entering the IP address of the Airport Express and was able to choose LaserWriter Select 360 in the printer setup and made a desktop printer. When I try to print I get a message that "the Host is busy."
    I have a feeling that this set up needs the IP address of the printer, not the Airport Express, but since the Mac still does not "see" it, I have no way of getting it's IP address. Is there a default IP address for the LaserWriter Select 360? Is there a way to print out a page with this info about the printer on it without it being connected to a computer?
    I also have a small ethernet hub. I'm going to try to connect through that or disconnect my DSL and connect directly. Can I be connected to DSL and the printer with just a hub or do I need a router? I've only got 1 computer and a router seems like overkill.
    If Apple ships my computer with a driver for my printer I assume they expect them to be connected. How do they expect them to connect– ethernet, USB, Airport?
    Any suggestions?

  • Can't locate IP-printer

    Hello,
    I have recently bought the new Airport Extreme 802.11n.
    Everything works fine, except I can't seem to locate my printer (Brother 1270N, laserprinter), which is hooked up to one of the Ethernet LAN-ports on the Airport.
    I know I have to have the correct IP-adress, but how do knnow wich one that is? I haven't been able to locate it with the Airport Admin tools.

    I'm asking again, if anyone could help me with this :
    My new Airport Extreme 802.11n can't find my printer, which is hooked to an Ethernet LAN-port. I can't figure out how to find the correct IP-adress of the printer. It doesn't show anywhere in the Airport utility program.
    My printer is a Brother 1270N Laserprinter. Have used it as an IP-printer before with another router, and it worked fine.
    Any suggestions much appriciated, thank you.

  • Original Airport Cart can;t locate network? Help!!!!

    I have a 2002 quicksilver g4 with the original airport card installed. It had been working flawlessly up until recently when it can;t locate the wireless netowrk in my home. I know it it's recognizing the card because it doesnt say "no airport card installed". I also know the nework is working because the two ither computers in my home locate the network and connect no problem. Any possible solutions?
    quicksilver 2002   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi Brian,
    I'm a big fan of just "starting over." Somehow, a glitch got introduced. Rather than digging around and trying to find the glitch, and possibly introducing more in the process, why not start over? (If you like figuring glitches out, ignore the following...)
    Turn off airport on your g4. Delete references to your network in "Network Preferences" and in Keychain access in utilities. Reconfigure your wireless router to factory defaults. Restart your wireless configuration. Once all computers are up and running wirelessly, reintroduce wireless security.
    Good luck
