Curiosity about FileVault accounts

I'm looking at my volume structure and cleaning up some space issues with Monolingual (4GB had crept back in since I last ran that) and happened to notice that if I Get Info on my User home folder for the one account I have that is FileVaulted, I get a silly response like 50kB when not logged in, which can't be right. That leads me to think that the actual files are stored in some other place, I believe as a disk image .dmg file.
Just as a curiosity, does anyone know where those files are kept? Apparently that place is not in the User folder?
Thanks

ok, that it correct - I never noticed this before. but that directory is ONLY created when you are logged in into a filevaulted account. it's not present when you log out. the OP is asking about the size of a filevaulted home directory when viewed from a different account so that .mike folder would not be present.
The actual way to find out the size on the disk while not logged in would be to use this command from the terminal:
sudo du -h -d 1 /Users
yes, that will work.

I need to verification about my account that I have not vitrify on my Apple ID account

If you mean that you haven't verified it then you should have recieved an email to the primary email account on your account - from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5622 :
Why am I sometimes asked to verify my Apple ID by email?
When you create a new Apple ID or make certain changes to your account, Apple will require you to sign in by following the link in a verification email. This is to help protect your identity and keep your account secure. Some Apple services, such as FaceTime and GameCenter, require email validation.
How do I verify my Apple ID by email?
Simply follow the link in the verification email that says "Verify Now." Sign in with your current Apple ID and password, then click Verify Address. You can also verify by signing in at My Apple ID. You'll receive an email prompting you to verify.

  • Time Machine stopped backup of FileVault account at logout

Suddenly TM stopped backup of my FileVault account. Usually the backup was initiated after logout, but for a couple of weeks nothing like that has happened. It could be a little bit correlated to the time of upgrade to 10.5.6, which I did...
Has anybody faced similar problem? Rgds, Artur
Remark: I use officially not supported configuration for TM - with external drive on network SMB drive.

Download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget from: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/timemachinebuddy.html. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window.
If you only have one user account, create another one temporarily, with normal privileges.
Then make some changes in your Home Folder and do a +Back Up Now+ from the TM icon in the menubar.
Then log out. Wait for a few seconds, and log back in, as the other user.
Check the widget. If TM hasn't done another backup, do another +Back Up Now+ (from the non-FileVault user account) and check again.
If TM hasn't backed-up the main user's Home Folder, or you see something there that seems suspicious, copy and post the messages here (be sure to get them all, as sometimes they overflow the small window).
If you're not sure what it actually backed-up, you might want to download the TimeTracker app, from www.charlessoft.com.
It shows most of the files saved by TM for each backup (excluding some hidden/system files, etc.). I'm not sure whether it will show the details of the encrypted home folder, or just a big disk image, but something should appear.

  • I changed a password to an online account and I got a question about which account

Hi There, someone seems to have gotten into my personal information somehow and I'm trying to figure out to what extent.
I have changed passwords on everything from iTunes and email accounts and I was just going through online accounts. I was resetting my password on Acklands grander and I was posed with a question:
    "For Which Account"
    - [email protected]
    - Madness
The myemail account is my account. What is this message about "Madness"?
The browser I was using is Firefox and I certainly have never used that name in any way.
Is this a hidden account on my computer, firefox, or the Acklands Granger Website?
I could find no other evidence of this acccount anywhere I looked apart from that message.
    Help!
    Alex

hello alex, this is certainly no hidden account by firefox but other than that i'm afraid we at the support for mozilla's firefox browser won't be able to help you any further with this question. please contact the webiste where you've tried to reset your password to inquire more about the account they have displayed during the procedure.
    <br>thank you for your understanding!

  • I received email purporting to be from Apple customer support about my account. Is this spam?

I have received emails about my account. I am suspicious. Are they spam?

I am not an expert on spam but I got the same email yesterday and today. It appears to be spam to me and when I am suspicious I never click on any links in the email. Just go to the apple website in your browser and sign in as usual and check but never click on any links in emails to be safe. I seriously doubt that Apple would send out emails showing multiple addresses which is why I think it is spam. That is my 2 cents worth.

  • Filevaulted account self destructed!

This is very strange, but today I rebooted and my user account vanished. I had a filevaulted account and since time machine won't back it up unless you logout I did a restart and went for supper. I saw the backup starting, but when I got back later I could no longer login. I had to go through a pretty long process to get back working, I won't describe it here, but it's on my blog if you want to read the whole story, see link at the end of this post.
What I want to know is how my account could self destruct like that? Will this happen again? I am now better prepared for this but it was very inconvenient and I lost a whole evenings work restoring instead of doing what I had planned.

  • Cannot exclude FileVault Account from Time Machine...

    Hi
I use a FileVault account to work on work-related stuff at home, which I do not want backed up to TimeMachine. Despite excluding this account in TimeMachine prefs, it continued to get backed up after logging out. After reading that exclusions should ideally be set up before the first-ever back-up, I erased my TM drive and started from scratch, excluding both the Home folder (call it ABC) and the sparsebundle (.ABC) for the account. This didn't work, so I also manually edited the TM prefs in /Library to add both these paths under "Exclude by Path".
Yet still it goes to "preparing to back-up ABC..." when I log out. So far I have cancelled this process each time, so there is as yet no back-up on the TM drive, but I simply wish it would not prepare/attempt a back-up and just return to the login window.
    What am I missing?
    Many thanks

    Paul,
Yet still it goes to "preparing to back-up ABC..." when I log out. So far I have cancelled this process each time, so there is as yet no back-up on the TM drive, but I simply wish it would not prepare/attempt a back-up and just return to the login window.
If you have it properly excluded, then let it proceed when you log out. I think what you are seeing is a standard log-out script when a user account is file-vaulted. It's going to always say that even if you have your file-vault excluded.
I believe, that Mac OS starts the file vault backup script automatically, but it hasn't yet hit the fact that your file vault is excluded. So try letting the log out process proceed. It will always say "Preparing to backup ABC..." but then it will hit the exclusion list and should stop. Let is log out and then log back in and see if that's that case.
Otherwise, try deleting the TM Prefs .plist, re-exclude your file vault account, and then log out. You will likely see that message again, but see if it does indeed proceed to back it up.
*Delete The Time Machine Preference .plist*
Go to --> Macintosh HD / Library / Preferences (Note: NOT Home / Library / Preferences).
    Drag the .plist file labeled,
    com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
to the root level of your Macs’ hard drive.
    Reboot your computer.
This .plist file is automatically recreated at startup if it is missing.
Now try choosing the external HD in the TM Prefs for backup.
    Cheers!

  • Creating filevaulted account using commandline

Need help to locate the magic trigger.
During the happy days of Tiger I was able to create a local user account with filevault enabled using a simple script. This did result in a sparsefile being created that worked just like the one the User account creation tool created.
No moving forward to Leopard I'm facing the challenge of moving away from sparsefile and into the realm of sparsebundle. I can create the filevault, access it and dump data into it, the freshly created user can log in to the system using the provided password. But the second that the user are trying to change the password, he/she gets a 'You cannot change your password to the password you entered'. The more detailed description tells me that it is due to the account using filevault. The suggestion is to turn filevault off and on again.
Now I'm puzzled - with sparsefiles this works without any problem, the second that I'm changing to sparsebundle it fails. Wherein lies the difference - the Apple provided tool for account creation manages to create accounts that can change password.
Any hints are more than welcome, and no I cannot change to use OD, MCX. The accounts are created very locally on the single machine.

    Hi V.K.
sorry about not posting a sample script. I'w now spend some time getting the pieces together from the large python script that are creating the user account. So here it is.
    #!/bin/sh
    mkdir /Users/johndoe
hdiutil create -size 2g -type SPARSEBUNDLE /Users/johndoe/johndoe.sparsebundle \
    -volname johndoe -stdinpass -encryption \
    -certificate /Library/Keychains/FileVaultMaster.cer -fs HFS+
dscl localhost create /Local/Default/Users/johndoe uid 12345
dscl localhost create /Local/Default/Users/johndoe gid 12345
dscl localhost create /Local/Default/Users/johndoe home /Users/johndoe
dscl localhost create /Local/Default/Users/johndoe RealName 'John Doe'
dscl localhost create /Local/Default/Users/johndoe UserShell /bin/bash
dscl localhost create /Local/Default/Users/johndoe HomeDirectory \
    '<home_dir><url>file://localhost/Users/johndoe/johndoe.sparsebundle</url></home_dir>'
dscl localhost create /Local/Default/Users/johndoe Picture \
    '/Library/User Pictures/Animals/Dragonfly.tif'
dscl localhost create /Local/Default/Groups/johndoe PrimaryGroupID 12345
    /usr/bin/passwd johndoe
    mkdir -p /tmp/work
hdiutil attach -mountpoint /mnt/work -stdinpass /Users/johndoe/johndoe.sparsebundle
    ditto -rsrcFork '/System/Library/User Template/English.lproj/' /mnt/work
    ditto -rsrcFork '/System/Library/User Template/English.lproj/' /mnt/work
    chown -Rh johndoe:johndoe /mnt/work
    hdiutil eject /mnt/work
    End of script
As for not using the gui - well I'm at first not the author of the script, just the one fixing the issue with it in combination with SPARSEBUNDLE. Second I have no intention of making the Apple script counterpart to drive the UI user creation interface. The reason for the script in the first place is that we are not running a OD, nor binding the units to AD and do not have any plans in deploying MCX at this point. User accounts are created locally on the unit as part of a automated prep scrip, but if there are anyone that has a Apple script that will create the account and enable SPARSEBUNDLE max size - I'm all ears.

  • Issue with logging in to my FileVault account

    Hi,
I recently turned on FileVault for my account on my MacBook with OSX 10.6.7. Since then I have problems logging in to my account. After I insert my login information, it's loading my background, the top bar, sometimes the dock and it freezes. The only option is to shut down from the power button, then restart and then it works. This happens every time I turn off my computer and FileVault cleans and restores the free space.
I tried to clean up the login apps and reduced them to only 2 or 3 apps. After doing this, I manege to open my Mac without having to restart from power button and I thought that the problem was solved, but today It didn't log in. I manage to log in after a restart from the home button and now I see that some of my settings are gone (the dock is at a default state, same with Mail and spaces).
Please tell me what should I do.
    Thanks,
    Mihai

Rather doubt it's a FB issue as I'm not having any issues at all.
Check Safari > Preferences > Extensions
If there are any installed, turn that off, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If installed, temporarily disable anti virus softare.
Apps such as Little Snitch, Net Nanny, and Hands Off can cause issues with Facebook
If nothing above applies, install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo
That reinstalls any missing system files.
Restart your Mac after the combo is installed. It's ok to do this even though v10.6.8 is already installed.

  • Question about user accounts

Setting up new mini with 10.6 installed. This is my second Mac, current system is eMac with 10.3. All files/media I want to save are backed up on ext. HD.
This time I want to set up an Administrator Acct. and another User Acct. (without Admin. access) for routine use. Did not know enough to do that the first time.
But, I want access to all the old files without ownership/privileges problems.
As I understand it, I can make the user acct. names the same as the names on my acct. on the old system and there should not be any problem? I have a reason for wanting to not do this, but certainly can and probably will, if that will work.
To help me understand all this, is the "short name" the real account name/identifier? In other words, can I make the user name anything I want as long as the "short name" is the same?

The info you have given has thrown me for a loop. As I stated in my reply to Scott I am really having trouble understanding this whole account/file ownership issue, although I thought I had it figured out and was seeking verification.
Regarding your info about copying files from an external drive, how/why does "ignore ownership on this drive" work?
"ignore ownership" makes all files on the external read+write by any user so there are no issues with permissions.
Did a lot of research on several Mac help sites before posting here. A common problem seems to be someone wanting/needing to change account name(s) on a system they will continue to use. Common advice given is:
    Create new account.
    Copy/transfer files to new account.
    Remove/delete old account.
How/why does that work without file ownership/permissions being a problem?
most files have read permissions by everybody when created so copying them from one account to another is not a problem. please read up on the basic permissions structure
    http://www.perlfect.com/articles/chmod.shtml
I understand that the real UID is a numeric code. How does the system arrive at that code?
the very first user account created on any mac has UID 501 by default. the next one 502 and so on.
It seems to me if I use the same, exact, account name(s), file ownership would not be an issue.
that's completely wrong. same account name doesn't help in any way at all. same user ID is what's checked.
for example when you create a file on an external drive and then move that drive to another computer if you access it from an account with the same user ID by a different user name it will show you as the owner.

  • What can I do about an account who's owner has passed away?

So theres an update on my iMac that my father purchased last year for Garageband, iMovie, and iPhoto. He passed away shortly after buying the it and I received the Mac. I've forgotten  the password we created for his account because its been a while since I've had to enter it, and the only way I have to recover it would be his security questions which only he knows. Is there any way to transfer those purchases to my account? Or recover his? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Apple does't usually transfer content from one Apple ID to another, but as suggested contact Account security and they maybe able to assist you in recovering use of the account. Because Apple is really careful about account security, be prepared to supply perhaps a faxed copy of the death certificate and other identification.
    Apple ID security issues -
Account security issues almost always require you to speak directly to an Apple representative to securely establish your identity as the account holder. You can set it up so that Apple calls you, either immediately or at a time convenient to you.
    1. Go to www.apple.com/support
    2. Choose Contact Support and click Contact Us
    3. Choose Other Apple ID Topics and choose the appropriate topic for your issue
    4. Follow the onscreen instructions
