D800's NEF and Aperture 3.3.1

Hi Everyone,
When I load the NEF from my Nikon D800 in Aperture, I have an black preview of the picture with the message "Image format not supported".
While in theory it should work with versions of softwares installed.
Mac OS X 10.7.4
Aperture 3.3.1
I tried to install the "Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 3.13", but during installation, a message tells me I have a newer version already installed.
How could I manage this ?
Thanks.
SDB

I desperate need a help from someone who can send me or show me where I can download the "Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.11" ... need the "drive" for the Nikon D800 ... already downloaded the Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.12 but it did not work, then i did the OS upgrade to 10.8.2 but it did not work, then i upgraded the apperture to 3.4.1 but....it did not work. I deleted "RawCamera.bundle" and installed the update again "3.12", "3.10", "3.13" but I can not make with the apperture read files from Nikon D800.

  • RAW(NEF) and Aperture

I'm new to the use of both RAW and Nikon D600. I have been shooting mostly RAW lately. After the image is loaded, is it still a RAW(NEF) file? Because when I  drag an image out to the desktop it takes a .jpeg suffix.
    Thanks

Aperture will give you a jpeg when dragging out of the application. If you want to export the RAW file, choose File>Export>Original.
Note: If you are using RAW+JPEG, then you'll want to make sure the RAW file is in front via import settings or set to RAW within the application.

  • Thumbnails from a D800 showing as a NEF and nikon file number, no picture

thumbnails only showing as a NEF and nikon file number no picture D800 camera

What version Photoshop and Bridge and what type and version OS?
Where do you expect to see the thumbnails and where are they not showing up? In Bridge or in the Mac Finder/Windows Explorer?
If you can, supply a screen shot.

  • NEF exposure value difference in Photoshop and Aperture

We shoot paintings with a Nikon D2X and 4 SB-800 flash units. We keep a Macbeth in the frame until we get an LAB value of around 85-90 (RGB around 230, 230, 230) in the white patch. Until recently we have used Nikon Capture to control the camera and then opened the images in Photoshop (by way of Adobe Camera Raw) to read the exposure values. On our last shoot we moved to Aperture. Testing had previously shown a variation in the range of three LAB points for previously shot NEFs between Aperture's raw interpreter and Adobe Camera Raw. When we returned to the office and began to process the images we discovered that NEF files opened in Aperture showed the LAB exposure of 85-90 we saw in the field, but when the same NEF files are opened in Photoshop, the white patches are blown out. If we open them in Aperture and transfer them to Photoshop as TIFFs the exposure is the same as Aperture shows -- 85 to 90. As an experiment we opened one in Nikon Capture NX. The values match Photoshop and not Aperture.
If anyone is interested in helping on the diagnosis, here is a link to one of our NEFs with the offending white patch:
    http://www.catalogueraisonne.org/tmp/2008-06-19_144.NEF
Does anyone have an explanation of this huge difference of exposure values between Adobe and Capture NX on one side and Aperture on the other?

    Hi,
Well I've downloaded your NEF file but I'm afraid I'm not seeing the difference that you are. I've loaded the image into Capture NX2, Aperture 2.1, and Lightroom 2 Beta (which is, in effect, using the ACR engine. There is a slight difference in values between them all, but only very slight. Aperture gives readings of 95.3% for luminance; LR gives me R:98%, G:99% and B:99% and Capture NX 2 gives me Readings that average 254 (which must be 99%). None of them are therefore technically blown out, however both LR and CNX2 show them the white patch as blown out if you switch on the lost highlights indicator. Aperture doesn't show them as blown out.
So the difference range is a matter of 4% roughly, which I think can simply be put down to slight differences in RAW converters and the contract curves that they apply.

  • Aperture confuses orf and nef and avi raw files. Suggestions on what to do?

Just used a new Olympus E-M5 in Italy and Germany, after many years of using Nikon products, most recently a D700 with fast glass. I have also used Aperture from version 1.0. Olympus RAW file format is .ORF. As I have uploaded the images into Aperture from the SD cards, I have just found that on one card about 100 files are mis-identified in Aperture's import window as either .NEF or .AVI files, rather than the .ORF files that they are. They are identified as .ORF files on the card itself.
I have not yet imported them and wondered if anyone has any thoughts about the wisdom of: (1) uploading them as they are, as the images seem to be fine; (2) batch changing the file extension to .ORF once they have been imported; (3) trying some variant of drag and drop, or moving the files to a new folder and importing from there; (4) something totally different and better.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
P.S. For those of you tired of tugging around big bodies and fast (and heavy) glass, the move to the E-M5 has been wonderful. Great Zeiss and Leica lenses are available (and much lighter!) and the images are magnificent, though smaller, in the 4/3 format.

How are you imorting from your Olympus? Directly from the camera or from a card reader? With some cameras the results can be different, if imported directly from the camea. If possible, use a card reader.
    My D700 used compact flash, so this SD card has never been in a Nikon camera;
That is not what I meant - I thought that maybe this particular card has a corrupted filesystem and needs reformatting. Can you check with a different card, if all is o.k. for newer photos?
Do you have any thoughts about changing the file extension from .NEF to .ORF?
If it are truely .ORF files, it should not matter, how you call the file. But you need to do it before importing to Aperture. Afterwards renaming may cause Aperture to lose the connection between master and version.
I just made the following test: I renamed a Canon raw file (".CR2") to  Nikon raw (".NEF") in the Finder and reimported the renamed file. In spite of the misleading ,NEF extension, Aperture recognized the file by its attributes as a Canon Raw, as this screenshot ist showing, because of the EXIF, also when I renamed the file to "-ORF"- And the "Raw Fine Tuning" brick shows clearly, that independent of the file name extension the correct raw develepment, that for the Canon EOS will be used.
But the Finder will show the "Kind" of the "NEF" file as "Nikon Electronic Format". So if it bothers you, rename the file.
Have you by any chance set a file renaming preset in the "Import" panel? HAve a look at the "Rename Files" brick in the "Import" panel and check the preset, that is used by going to "Edit".
    Regards
    Léonie

  • How do I access my *.Nef files in finder and aperture?

How do I access my *.Nef files in finder and aperture?  What are the key strokes to finding these files.
BACKGROUND:       I shot jpg and nef during recent trips overseas, but can only see the jpg files in finder and aperture.  Are the original, the raw or NeF files?

    Kirby Krieger wrote:
Unfortunately, that horse is in the clover.  The distinction would force "raw" to be understood as an adjective (which designates a family of image file formats) and not as an actual image file format, which in turn would help many better understand what raw camera files are.  Alas.  I suppose one could substitute "one of the raw file formats" in place of RAW.
Alas indeed, Kirby. On the other hand, if mentioning it now and again *does* help someone understand the distinction, then I'll continue to mention it, um, now and again.
And if it prompts someone to ask a question, all the better - I can then ride this particular hobbyhorse around the forum, slaying linguistic sloppiness in my path.
That Apple are guilty of the same error is disappointing though. As you say, Alas...

  • How can I import NEF and JPEG in Aperture at the same time from my D200

I have my D200 and shoot in RAW and JPEG.
why is it when I import in the library that I only see the NEF files and not the JPEG.
I want to import both the extensions, because I shoot all my pictures in RAW and JPEG and I only want to store the 4 and 5 stars rated pictures in NEF and lower rating I want to store just as JPEG.
    Thanks for any help, Frank

You assume that I speak and write Dutch.
My apologies to all of you who don't/cannot read/understand Dutch. The following is in Dutch and not Double Dutch.
It explains in some detail how to setup a workflow in Automator for separating RAW and JPEG files and importing the result in Aperture.
If someone wants the explanation in English: post a message.
    Ga naar
    http://www.completedigitalphotography.com/?p=408#more-408
en haal de Separate Jpeg's action.
NB. Ik ken alleen de Engelse namen van de mappen.
Plaats de Separate Jpeg's action hier

  • Merge to HDR Pro does not work on Nikon D800 RAW (NEF) files

    Hi,
I can't get Merge to HDR Pro to work on NEF RAW files from my Nikon D800 - nothing happens after after confirming the file selection.  However, it works ok if I convert those files to DNG (using Lightroom 4), and if I use the D800's JPGs, and if I use Nikon D7000 NEFs.  It just seems to be a problem with Nikon D800 NEFs.
    Steps taken:
    1. File -> Automate -> Merge to HDR Pro
    2. Browse... and select NEF files (even selecting 2 files does not work).
    3. Attempt to Automatically Align Source Images is checked.  Then press OK.
    Expected result:
Progress cursor spins as files are loaded and HDR dialog appears.
    Actual result:
Nothing happens - no progress cursor or CPU or disk activity - it is as if I had clicked cancel instead of ok.
This is a clean install of the 64 bit CS6 beta on Windows 7 64 bit, with no plugins, and I reset preferences (Ctrl+Alt+Shift on startup).  I do have my existing CS5 Extended still installed, as well as Lightroom 3.6 and 4.0.
I can send you the NEFs if you like.

    Hi,
The Ps CS6 public beta version contains the same camera support as found in Ps CS5/5.5 compatible CR 6.6. There will be future updates to CR 7 for Ps CS6 to pick up more camera support. The Nikon D800 NEF files are not supported, yet.
If you like to work with your D800 files in the public beta build now, you'll have to get the DNG Converter 6.7 from here: http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/cameraraw6-7/
and convert your files to DNG.
    regards,
    steve

  • Has anyone solved their LR4 / Nikon D800 RAW NEF issues?

I've done a lot of reading on this topic and think I have a handle on how easily the new D800 NEF files can be corrupted by the older versions of Nikon Transfer.
When I began using the camera I accidently made the mistake of corrupting them and haven't had any issues since... until yesterday.
I photographed last night, and imported about 160 RAW NEF files onto my brand new Macbook Pro with Retina for a same day preview for the host.  I transfered the images using ViewNX2 & by association it's built-in Nikon Transfer 2 utility. I used the built in SD Card reader on the Macbook which has always worked in the past.  But alas!!!!!  While they imported fine, LR4 can't import them and gives me the error "Preview Unavailable at this Time".  I should note... Nikon Transfer 2 was set to clear the card after the transfer .
Nikon ViewNX2 can see the images and I'd hoped to fix the issue by just converting them to JPEG's but, no bueno. It tells me it can't.  This is the precise issue I can into when I accidently used the original version months ago on my iMac.  But it's impossible that I have the old version on this unit.  It's less than a month old and I'd downloaded the most recent version from Nikon.  So I'm running under the assumption that the file is somehow corrupted.
I've seen a lot of people running into issues getting used to the new workflow requied to deal with these enormous RAW's.
Here's the all important question. After the files have an issue... is there anyway to recover them???  I can't retake them, the original shots were wiped from the card. So what do I do?  At least Nikon View can see them, so I have to believe that there is some image information there.
Has anyone sucessfully fixed the issue?
Going forward I plan to just import everything directly through LR4, so I think that'll aliviate future heartburn... but what's my "undo" solution?
I know there's a lot that's been written on this topic and really appriciate the support!
    -Jared

What Bob Frost just posted (after fixing the hidden http// part of the URL) worked for the image you uploaded, so try that:
    http://owl.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/fix_corrupted_nef.html
BTW, I answered 14 to the bit-depth-12-or-14 question the utility asked, and it worked ok on the example corrupted NEF.
Below is what I was typing up and testing before posting, and works to extract the embedded JPG Preview, but does not actually fix the corrupted NEFs, which is a better solution.  I am including it, below, for reference in case someone without corrupted NEFs also wants to extract JPGs from their raw files.  It uses the same tool from Phil Harvey without his customizations to work specifically with corrupted NEFs.
    == Original Message ==
The raw data in the NEF you uploaded appears corrupted or otherwise unusable because when viewing in Windows Explorer using the latest Nikon NEF Codec that supports the D800, all I see is a small thumbnail then black with a few parts of color, however for that one file, at least, the embedded JPG preview is intact, and 7360 x 4912 in size, enough to see the camera-shake blur.

I’m on a PC and you’re on a Mac but the same tool is available - exiftool a command-line program you run in terminal (on a Mac) or in a Command Prompt window on a PC:
    http://owl.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/
If what you download includes a (-k) then remove it by renaming before attempting to run the command, below.  On Windows I would rename exiftool(-k).exe to exiftool.exe without the (–k) part.  The (-k) tells exiftool to display the exif information by default if you drag-and-drop to it.  While this is normally useful, for the purpose of extracting JPGs from NEFs this might be confusing so I’m suggesting to rename the executable before using it.
Here is the command-line to extract the fullsize JPG from the NEFs and then copy the metadata tags from the NEF to the newly written JPG:
    .\exiftool -b -JpgFromRaw -w %d%f_%ue.jpg -execute -tagsfromfile @ -srcfile %d%f_%ue.jpg -overwrite_original -common_args --ext jpg .
The above command assumes both the exiftool executable and all the NEFs are in the current folder.  The current folder is designated by a single period both at the very beginning and the very end of the command-line.  If exiftool is in a different folder, then supply that path instead of the initial period, and if the NEFs are in a different folder, substitute that folder-name for the final period.  The final period has a space separating it from the preceding –ext jpg.
It is also assumed that only NEFs and the executable are in the current folder.  If there are other files, they may confuse things so you might want to move things to a temporary working folder, and I’d suggest working with a copy of the NEFs just in case something goes haywire, you’re not overwriting the originals, corrupt as they may be.
For reference, the above command-line was simplified from a more complex example that didn’t quite work with your file, one that conditionally extracts either the full-size JPG or the tiny JPG-thumbnail.  The example is the last one in the Copying Examples section, here:
    http://owl.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/exiftool_pod.html#copying_examples

  • Has anyone had trouble manipulating Nikon D750 raw image (NEF) in Aperture version 3.6 on Yosemite?

Has anyone had trouble manipulating Nikon D750 raw image (NEF) in Aperture (version 3.6 500021000000000.3, Digital Camera RAW 6.0 - Build 761.5, Digital Camera RAW support 6000 - Build 136.1)
I used to be able to manipuplate Nikon Raw (NEF) images from a Nikon D70 and D3200 using Aperture, until the 70 died and the 3200 was stolen about 18 months ago. Recently I did two things: (1) I upgraded OS X to Yosemite and (2) purchased a Nikon D750.  I have successfully imported NEF files from the camera to Aperture, but the images do not render/ cannot be opened/ manipulated. Instead, I see a black thumbnail for each imported image with a cassette recorder play icon in the center of each image.
I can view the NEF image in Finder preview mode, either directly when viewing the images on the camera SD card or after exporting the previously imported NEF image from Aperture to my desktop or user folder.  Previously imported NEF image seem unaffected.
    thanks.
    D.

The current Apple OSX 10.10 Yosemite and the current Aperture version 3.6 do not have support yet for importing Nikon d750 nef/raw files. It usually takes Apple six to eight weeks to release a new digital camera raw update file for new Nikon dslr models. Once that digital camera raw update file is finally released, update your current version of Aperture and that will allow you to import your d750 raw files. In the meantime, you have many workarounds. In my opinion, the easiest is to save images in duplicate nef/raw and jpeg image files to your SD cards.
And for now, just import the jpegs to Aperture 3.6 from your d750.  Process your jpegs in Aperture - and hope your clients are happy with the jpegs and can wait for later nef/raw image processing. Be sure to save and do not erase your original SD cards that include the nef/raw and jpeg files - then when Aperture finally releases a new digital camera raw file update that includes the d750 - just insert your original camera SD cards into the computer platform and import the old d750 nef/raw files and edit/process them.
There are many other ways to proceed in the interim as well. You can always import your d750 nef/raw images into Lightroom (if it has been updated to convert the d750 nef files) and process them there. But for the time being, if you can afford to save and hold onto your original SD cards and wait for the inevitable Aperture digital camera raw update, this is a very easy and simple way to proceed.

  • Import from HD folder with NEF and JPEG files-Can't see JPEG files

I am using Aperture 2 and I am trying to import from an external HD folder of images, with both NEF and JPEG files of the same photo. Using the import function, the import pane only shows the NEF file, not the JPEG file. Is there a setting somewhere that will allow me to see the JPEG file also, so I can import only the JPEG. (note: if I move the JPEG to a different folder away from the NEF file, then the JPEG appears and I can import it.)
PS I am importing only the JPEG because I have a Nikon D60, which is still un-supported.

You could import both, select all images afterwards, select 'Create version from master jpeg'(alt-J), unstack all (shift-cmd-K while everything is still selected), sort by file size to separate the raws from the jpegs, and delete the raws.
Or run the raws through Adobe's DNG converter (which in its newest version, 4.4, supports the D60) and use the DNG baseline support until Apple (or rather Aperture) supports the D60.

  • Photoshop elements and aperture

How do I edit using PS elements - I went to preferences, chose PS elements as the external editor, but the image stays in aperture and I can not seem to get the image in a place to edit using PSE. I have tried double clicking on the picture but that does not get to PSE.
    Thank you

Have you found a fix for this yet?
I use Aperture with Photoshop Elements 6.
    My example:
I have an original image say 20081212-33.jpg or 20081212-33.nef, in Aperture. I use referenced files.
Aperture will then create 20081212-33.tiff, and PE launches and I edit the image.
The problem comes with the save. Elements acts as if it needs a new filename. The one it suggests is usually 20081212.tif.
Right there is already a problem: PE uses a different extension from Aperture.
If I go ahead and save the file PE wants, it never shows up in Aperture.
If I click on the copy Aperture made, that works, but only on the first edit.
If I later decide to edit 20081212-33.tiff, Aperture doesn't create a new file for PE to use. I either overwrite the existing file (which can sometimes seem to screw things up in Aperture if I edit metadata), or I have to manually import an image I save somewhere like the desktop.
I can understand Aperture not creating a new file the second time. You already have an edited file so it assumes you want to edit again.
However, it would be nice if there were some way to make PE use the same extension.
Also, I frequently tell Aperture to make PSD files instead. Then when I'm done I want to add a final version to the stack in Aperture, and there is no convenient way to do that.
    Any ideas appreciated.
It's not unworkable, it's just a little clunky.

  • I can read NEF and RAW photos in iPhoto but not Aperature. What's up ?

How do I read and print NEF and RAW files ? Aperature is saying that the file format is incorrect but iPhoto reads them fine.

What is your Aperture version, Mac OS X Version, and your camera model?
The raw support is specific for each camara, and it will depend on you Aperture version, if the raw support is available.
See this list for the raw formats, that are supported in Aperture.
Apple - Aperture - Technical Specifications - RAW Support
Is your iPhoto version newer than your Aperture version? If both versions are current, they should be able to read the same raw formats.

  • Nikon ViewNX 2 and Aperture Issues

I recently addeded Descriptions/Captions to Nikon RAW files via Nikon View NX2. I originally had these same images in an Aperture library. When I went back to view the images in the Aperture Library they were no longer readable by Aperture. Each image that had benen loaded in to Aperture and was oringalnlly visable now shows up as Unsupported Image Format. Something Nikon has done to the file seems to be keeping Aperture from seeing the NEF's properly. Has anyone else experinced this issue and if so were you able to fix it?

    Hi Jim,
Sadly you have run into the fact that Nikon software does not treat the NEF as sacrocanct.
This is not something you would necessarily expect, as every other piece of non-camera manufacturer software PROCESSES the RAW file before it can use it...and they expect to be seeing a fresh out of camera original NEF. Nikon, being the only one that actually knows all the details of the file construction of a NEF, chose to edit the NEF directly.
Aperture's hallmark is non-destructive editing, meaning it reads the NEF, processes it, and creates "Versions" which are nothing more than a recipe of what was done to the orignal file. If the NEF that Aperture relied upon as a basis for its processed versions is no longer the pure, out of camera Nikon NEF format, then it will no longer recognize them. You may or may not be able to re-import the edited NEFs into Aperture.
I use the backup function in Aperture when I import, storing the NEFs to two places at once. I do not use View, but I did use Capture NX2 for a bit, and I always did it with copies of the NEFs, never the ones I was managing in Aperture.
I guess my bigger question is why are you using View, and why didn't you add the captions in Aperture?
    Hope this was helpful,
    KJ Doyle

  • Nikon D200 two files NEF and JPEG

    Hello,
    I'am a newbee with aperture.
I shoot my pictures in NEF and JPEG for a reason.
    My thing yet is:
How can I easily split the two extensions when I import them and rename than in a row.
eg when I shoot a hunderd pictures underwater in NEF and JPEG, I have 200 pictures two rename.
I know I can click each NEF picture and than in batch rename ( same with JPEG), but is there a way to put all the NEF together and rename the same with JPEG?

    Welcome to the family.
    I'am a newbee with aperture.
I shoot my pictures in NEF and JPEG for a reason.<
You can search the forum for similar terms, the topic of shooting raw+jpg comes up about once a week.
Many new users expect Aperture to conform to or to support their old ways of doing things. They often try to force Aperture to work the way they want it to. In a nutshell, Aperture seems to be designed specifically to eliminate this practice. of shooting raw+jpg. Once you understand and learn to live with Aperture's paradigm, you will realize you no longer need to shoot or to keep the jpegs.
If your old habits truly require the duplicate jpgs, I doubt you will be happy using Aperture for your raw images.
However, I also hope you get different advice, something that will help you directly. Patience, other users will contribute their opinions over the next few days.
