DAQ of low voltag signal

Hello,
as I´m quite new to LabView and DAQ this question is hopefully easy to answer.
I´m trying to read a voltage signal from a device referring to a temperature ( 10mV = 1°C). When reading the voltage with my DAQ-Card with a rate of 1000 Hz, I see the voltage I expect (300 mV) and peaks with 2,5 V and above 10 V. When I connect to a oscilloscope I can´t see those peaks, but just the right voltage. My question is if this is a problem arising from the small voltage? Does my Card internally amplify the voltage? Do I need to amplify the signal before connecting to the card?

It should be quite easy for the DAQ-Card to read a 300mV signal at a sampling rate of 1kHz.
I can't explain why you are seeing peaks of "2.5V and above 10V" - this sounds quite wrong - in fact most DAQ-Cards are not even capable of directly measuring anything greater then 10V.
Most DAQ cards will measure using a default range of -5V to +5V (instrumentation amplifier gain of x1) unless you specify otherwise.
In traditional DAQ programming, you specify your expected maximum signal range and LabVIEW/DAQ chooses a suitable board gain to cover at least your signal range. Board gain values are typically 0.5, 1.0, 0.5, 0.2, 0.1, 0.05, etc, etc, although not all boards have as full a range as some others do (it varies depending on cost/specification) - for example, the NI-PCI-6025E low cost board only has gain/ranges of 0.5 (+/-10.0 V), 1.0 (+/-5.0 V), 0.1 (+/- 500 mV) and 0.01 (+/- 50mV).
So to answer your specific questions...
i) No the problem you are seeing is not due to your lowish signal.
ii) Your card can amplify the voltage prior to the DAC (digital to analogue converter) - although you need to program this as you deem appropriate.
iii) Normally you don't need to amplify the signal yourself (except in special circumstances).
Final advice - you should always try to use the default "differential" measuring mode in order to minimise noise - and check to make sure that your signal source is ground referenced to your PC/DAQ board by some route.

    Technically, the question was in the title.  But of course, the answer to that is... Connect them using WIRES.   It's designed for voltage signals, just wire your cell outputs to whatever DAQ input channels you're going to read.

When measured by my vi i found that the voltage signals where not the same 2 of the channels displayed almost twice the amount.After changing the channel order using the I/O tabs on the right of the control panel I found i got the correct voltage readings. What caused my vi to diplay incorrect voltage readings due to the order of my I/O channels?I am using Labview 6.0 with a SCB-68 shielded I/O Connector Block interfaced with a NI-DAQ Multifunction I/O board PCI-MIO-16E-4.

    I couldn't open the attachment you posted. However, you probably set the wrong input limits for your gains or had a too small interchannel delay in between channels that wasn't letting the instrumentaion amplifier to settle down properly.
    A good way to make sure your VI is the cause for the problem is to run one of the Labview shipping examples to do the acquisition. The best one to try is the one named Continuous Acquisition and Chart(buffered).vi.

  • How to continously generate a voltage signal with dynamic amplitude.

    Hello all,
    I am looking for ideas and pointers (help in other words). I would like to generate a voltage signal (sine for example) on a AO of my NI cRIO-9263 (DAQmx). The signal should be:
    continuous (without jumps ie. smooth)
    dynamically able to be change the amplitude, frequency and sampling rate.
    interuptable so that the AO can be turned off.
    I have tried to use the DAQ Assistant but once it runs in continous mode, I have the impression that the waveform should not be changed. Is there maybe a way where I send repeatedly N samples of the waveform to the AO and gain more control over the signal that way. But if I do that how can I ensure that the signal is continous?
    Further more this output has to be generated in an event application ie. in the background.

  • Acquiring AC voltage signal using NI 9206 9205 and cRIO

    Hello.  I am having difficulty accurately acquiring an AC voltage signal using a NI 9206 and cRIO.  I'm attempting to acquire voltage signals from two types of Magnelab Current Transformers: split core and rope.  In Labview, I first populate an array of size 2,500 with the sensor signal (DIFF mode), then compute the RMS of the array.  For the split core CTs, I am able to accurately acquire the correct voltage reading (verified by measuring the corresponding amp on the line using a Fluke 434 Power Analyzer.  For the rope CT, however, using the same array/RMS method, I am unable to accurately acquire the correct voltage reading.  Measuring the amp on the line using the Fluke 434 PA, the correct voltage from the rope CT should be 0.05v.  Using the 9206 (DIFF mode), the RMS from the array gives a voltage reading of 0.071.  Now the interesting part is when I measure the line voltage using two different True RMS DMMs, I get two different readings.  One multi-meter, a Klein CL2000, reads the correct voltage at 0.05v.  Another multi-meter, a Fluke 189, reads incorrectly at 0.071, the same as I get using LabView and the NI 9206.  I suppose the question is how is the Klein interpreting the signal differently than the Fluke 189 and the NI 9206 via LabView.  One difference between the split-core and rope CTs is that the rope CTs require an external power supply 12-30v AC or DC.  I am providing them with 12v DC.  I have tried multiple voltages in both AC and DC and still get the same incorrect reading.  I'm quite certain it is not a power supply issue, although perhaps the integrator in the rope is creating a unique signal.  Any ideas?  I appreciate any input.

    Update - solution found
    While the Butterworth low-pass filter sort of worked, it was NOT the solution.  I spent some time analyzing the rope CT signals by sampling at a very high rate.  The AC signal coming off the rope CTs is triangular NOT sinusoidal.  The RMS function in LabView assumes a sinusoidal waveform and essentially calculates the RMS as the average of voltage peaks (for each cycle) / sq.rt (2).  Since the AC voltage single emanating from a regular split-core CT is basically sinusoidal, the LabView RMS of the signal gives an accurate reading of the voltage signal.  Unable to find a RMS function in LabView for a triangular AC voltage signal, I ended up developing my own custom triangular RMS function in LabView.  My function analyzes the signal by finding the peak of every cycle within the signal, takes the average of these peaks, then divides this average peak by sq.rt (3).  see this link for formulas:

    Using the triangular method, I am able to accurately acquire the signal off the rope CTs.

    If the Reset didn't work, you'll need to do a Restore.
    From iTunes, select the iPad and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finished, you will be asked if you wish the contents of iTunes to be copied to the iPad.

    They are medical signals and the synchonization is important.

  • How to program the daq card to route signals?

    Hi,
    I would like to program the daq card to route signals, for example from DIO0 to
    DIO1. All this should happen without Labview, directly on the board. Is this possible?
    What I want to do, is to get a lot of signals as inputs and output those
    signals as they are. Sometimes I need to take one signal through Labview
    and make some modifications to it. If I route all the signals through Windows
    and Labview will propably cause latency, so I would like to do this at the lowest
    level as possible.
    Currently I'm using PCI-DAQ 6025E, but this card might not be sufficient for our
    needs, so if this is possible with some other card, please share your information.
    All information on this matter is highly appreciated.

  • Getting low voltage from the Macbook Pro Case

    I'm getting low voltage throughout the casing whenever the brick is plugged in my 2011 macbook pro 13".  I can run my fingers across the case and get the 60hz hum from the ac current.  Pretty neat effect, not sure if it's totally safe or not.  I tried plugging it into several outlets and changed the surge protector, with no changes happening.  Anyone else getting this issue?  Thank you for listening!!!

  • Negative voltage signal

    Hi everybody...
    I m using an impact hammer to give excitation to a structure and i m measuring the response using an accelerometer...I want to measure the force with which i m hitting the structure with hammer...For that i am using a multiplier to multiply the voltage signal from impact hammer(in millivolts ) and the sensitivity of hammer namely 2.14 N/mV to get the force value indicated in a indicator....The problem i m facing now is that i m getting this value in negative which should not be so....
    Please help me in this regard.....Suggest me possible solutions to arrive at the correct force value....

    That's right.
         There are several possibilities:
         1.- As they suggested, just invert polarity.
         2.- Most sensors are strain sensors (we don't know what kind of sensor you have). They would generate either positive or negative voltage depending on which side they are bended to. Just like in a weight scale, we calibrate and use the static voltage (whatever it is), then output is positive if depressed, but would be negative if we pull from it. You would just flit over your sensor.
         3.- During impact, the material is bended producing certain polarity, then bounce back producing the opposite polarity. If you just use a digital sampling meter, your measurement will depend on the moment the data is sampled. If you need to record the peak, you also need an analog peak detector, which output is what you're trying to measure. But first, you need to know your polarity.

    I am measuring a digital voltage signal and I need to generate a graph vs. Time and be able to add user controls to start/stop the graphing and be able to export the graph to other programs such as MS Excel. Any help you could give would be much appreciated. Thank you.

    You probably want to use a chart. Place it inside a while loop that runs continuously. The chart should be in a case structure so it is bypassed depending on the boolean pause/continue switch.
    To save the data, get the "history data" of the chart via a propery node and save it to a file. It is probably easiest to save it to an ASCII file. Most other programs will be able to read it.

  • Low Mic Signal via Mbox2

    More frustrated n00b questions:
    I'm getting a really low mic signal into Logic.....
    So in trying to research why, I'm spending HOURS combing the web looking for "mbox2 low mic signal", "Logic Pro low mic signal", etcetera ad infinitum, trying to find information. FINALLY I find, buried in a mess of search results, a single sentence on the Digidesign site indicating that rather than select the mbox2 driver in Logic, I have to use DAE (and I also have to download an update to the DAE). So I download and install the update, relaunch everything (a few times), and now am asked to authorize all of Digidesign's various third-party Plugins when I start Logic. Except that I can't activate them because my Mbox2 didn't come with an iLok dongle (which the box said I'd need a USB port for -- I dunno if it was supposed to come with one?). So I click through 20 different third-party-plugin failed activation dialogues as Logic boots, only to be told at last that Logic doesn't recognize any hardware attached. !
    So where it was recognizing the mbox driver before, now it's not. (I was able to get a mic signal and record audio yesterday; but the level was VERY low, to the point of having to pump the levels so high that it distorted.)
    I don't know if this is a Mbox issue or a Logic issue or a mic issue. I'm leaning toward an mbox/Logic compatibility issue but I'm trying to figure out how the f* to fix it. And my eyes are beginning to cross.
    Help!

    Doesn't the Apple Store sell mbox????? I'm sure they
    used to if they don't now. I wish they wouldn't
    recommend a product that proclaims itself a viable
    substitute for things as fundamental as a preamp that
    are not sufficient to be. (I haven't looked at the
    Store; maybe they stopped recommending it.)

    They used to sell the original Mbox, that is why I bought
    one. I saw it on their web site sitting next to and plugged
    into my the same Titanium G4 laptop I had. They even
    had this whole web page about how great Digi products
    would work on Macs. They had me all psyched about
    getting pro stools. It only took a few months to see
    the way things really were. After that, I did not
    swallow everything Apple fed me. After I decided to
    to try Logic things got ugly. Digi has a seperate audio
    driver for people that want to use their hardware and
    not their software. It is almost like
    revenge for rejecting them. If you update OSX ( which
    you would be crazy to do, once you discover this)
    you always need to update their audio driver or the stuff
    does not work and lets just say they are not very prompt
    on the updates to this driver. I will eventually be getting
    another interface and like you,I dont care if it is the
    industry standard. I will never buy any Digi products again.
    The only thing that keeps me from letting it go on Ebay is
    that it has got a pair of high quality Focusrite preamps
    in it. Digi, I guess thought that they were not as good
    as their own (yea, right) so that is what they put in
    the Mbox2, those cheesy 50db gain preamps. Well sorry
    you had to a lesson the hard way. I try and persuade
    people against buying their stuff but if you had tried
    to persuade me before I bought mine, I am not sure
    you could have done it. That web page Apple made
    sucked me right in.

  • Low Voltage FB-DIMMs

    A question for Apple:
    Is the new 2008 Mac Pro compatible with low voltage (1.5V rather than 1.8V) FB-DIMMs?

    (I do realize that an Apple approved heatsink would have to be added).

    Why take a chance? they don't mention ECC. There are other places with good prices.

  • Low Voltage

    We have 2 Apple XServes and one of them is reporting Low Voltage on the CPU 1 Vcore at 1.21 volts. The second Vcore is reporting normal at 1.27 volts. The other XServe is reporting a normal voltage of 1.27volts on both Vcores.
    Is this anything to worry about and what exactly is going? Any help or thoughts would be very much appreciated!

    The word from Apple on this is that the voltage core thresholds are somehow hardcoded into the CPU itself. If you compare one box to another, the thresholds can be different.
    While your number may not be out of spec for the G5 processor, it is possible to be out of spec for the thresholds preset in the processor. (Extremely annoying, no?)
    My experience with this required that we swap out processors to fix the problem. Little else we tried would fix it, as there is no way to change the thresholds that System Monitor sees.
