Data Connection to PowerPivot Workbook on Sharepoint Online

Hi, we have an on-premise Sharepoint environment where we publish PowerPivot workbooks that serve as the source database for pivottables in other Excel workbooks.  Is there a way to do something similar with Sharepoint Online where we would upload
a PowerPivot workbook to Sharepoint Online and use as the source database for the pivottables in other Excel workbooks?  Whenever I try to connect to the PowerPivot workbooks on Sharepoint Online, I get a prompt saying that access is Forbidden.
Appreciate the help!

    Hello Challen Fu
I would be so grateful if you could please help me out
I have been trying to find a solution to the same error message
In my case, the power pivot reports were working before on a regular team  site , but then two things changed:
    a)  I  created a toplevel site using the BI Center template. Now I am using a Business Intelligence template , created a power pivot gallery library and uploaded a few powerpivot reports
    b)  On the  backend, the database instance was upgrated to SQL Server 2012
Front end Server VDSP01  remains  SQL Server 2008 R 2 where Sharepoint 2010  was installed as a FARM
Now, the reports will display in sharepoing however they will not refresh. the error message i get is the same.
     Scenario recap:
    a- Server VDSP01  uses SQL Server 2008 R 2 where Sharepoint 2010  was installed as a FARM
b- On the back end,  the database instance name was replaced with SQL 2012 Server:
               from SQL Server 2008 R 2 (instance DBDEV-COTS\COTS)
               to     SQL Server 2012 ( instance VTSQL01\COTS)
    c-  I was told that:
         From VDSP01, they ran
CliConfg.exe   to create SQL Server Alias :
           where    BEFORE: vdsharepoint -->  DBDEV-COTS\COTS
                and  AFTER    : vdsharepoint -->  VTSQL01\COTS

    Hi All,
I'm Getting below error once i refresh all the connection in Power query.

An error occurred while working on the Data Model in the workbook. Please try again.
We were unable to refresh one or more data connections in this workbook.

These data model issues can be a bit tricky to diagnose. Can you please try disabling "Load to Data Model" and then re-enabling it for the queries that are causing trouble?

  • Import data from Excel to list in Sharepoint Online site

I need to upload data from excel to SharePoint list in SharePoint online site.
I can extract data from excel but how can i connect to the SharePoint online site and upload the data programmatically from a console exe.

    Hi Anand,
You can export data from Excel or Access to a SharePoint list if you are using tables.

  • An Enterprise Data Dictionary / Business Glossary solution using SharePoint Online

    Hi everyone!
I have a requirement to create a metadata repository (data dictionaries of various SQL, Oracle and DB2 databases) and a business glossary of terms and associate the database columns in the various data dictionaries to the business terms. I also want to allow
data stewards to update their respective dictionaries/terms. It would be nice if there is a way to extract the metadata and update it directly and automatically from the various databases instead of manually copied and re-copied. Also, the end product needs
to be seen by all internal enterprise users and maybe even outside ones.
How can I implement this in SharePoint online/Office365?

Hi Simon. Group file storage is different to OneDrive for Business storage. With OneDrive for Business storage each user in your organisation receives 1TB of personal storage (assuming they have the appropriate licence). For Group files, storage is automatically
taken from your SharePoint Online team site pooled storage.
Check this article for confirmation of your OneDrive for Business storage allocation and group storage:
    https://support.office.com/en-us/article/SharePoint-Online-software-boundaries-and-limits-8f34ff47-b749-408b-abc0-b605e1f6d498
SharePoint Online team sites have a sync limit of 5,000 (20,000 for OneDrive for Business). I would think the group files sync limit would be 5,000, too.
If a user has their account removed you can still access their files for up to a certain period of time and assign yourself as administrator of their OneDrive for Business to get access to those files. Check out this post:

Group files are referenced under the small business premium plan here so I would expect they are available for your plan:

  • Connecting Exchange On-Premise to SharePoint Online (Office 365)

    Hi,
    Help, please.
    I’m running MS Exchange 2010 SP3 On-Premise and now I’m planning to deploy SP2013 in Office 365.
How can I connect both? What are my options?
    Thanks in advanced.

Users can connect to SharePoint calendars has no tie to Exchange. Your users will not be able to receive notifications from tasks, workflows, and so on. You will need to have Exchange Online and either set up hybrid Exchange (where you route mail
that cannot be delivered online to your on-prem implementation), or move users into Exchange Online.

  • "External Data Refresh Failed" in Excel Workbook in SharePoint 2013

      Hi Everyone,
I hope someone can help me sort this out. I wasn't sure if this should be submitted to SQL Server 2012 or SharePoint 2013 but I think I have ruled out an actual SQL issue here.
I have a test SharePoint 2013 Farm installed on one server.  On that server we have SQL Server 2012 Standard (Database Engine Only) installed as one instance for SharePoint 2013.  SharePoint 2013 is installed as Enterprise.
On another server I have SQL Server 2012 Enterprise installed I have both the Database Engine and Analysis Services installed on that server in one Instance.
I have created a new Analysis Services Cube and stored in on that server using VS 2012 Data Tools.   I then use Office 2013 Excel and create a new Pivot Table and bring in that data into that workbook.  I save that workbook to my desktop and
can click on the DATA tab and do a "Refresh All" and the data is refreshed with no problem.
I then Save that Workbook to SharePoint 2013 in my Business Center documents library. I then try to do a Data Refresh and get the following error: External Data Refresh Failed. We were unable to refresh one or more data connections in the workbook. The following
connections failed to refresh: servername ConnectionName.
Let me tell you a little bit about how I have my SharePoint 2013 setup.
In Application Management ==> Secure Store Service - I have a Target Application Id setup with an AD account name and password.
In Application Management ==> Excel Services Application Settings - I an using an Unattended Service Account that is pointing to the Target Application ID that I setup in Secure Store Service.
Now in SQL Server 2012. I have made the AD account name and password a SYSADMIN account (because nothing seemed to work) and mapped that login to my Database that I created my cube from.
I have went into the Properties of my Analysis Server on SQL Server 2012 and out that AD userid in the Security Page as a Server Administrator.
Now let me tell you the real kicker here.
I also have a Sharepoint 2010 farm that we have been testing for about a year.  This is something we wanted to go into production with but now have decided we will deploy our new production site on 2013.
This has the same setup only I am using SQL Server 2008 R2 as my database for SharePoint 2010, and am using SQL Server 2008 R2 on another server and instance for Database Engines and Analysis Server.
I have already created a cube on the SQL 2008 r2 Analysis Server using BIDS.
I created a Excel Pivot Table based on that cube and save it to the SharePoint 2013 site.
I then put the SSS AD account name on the SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services Security as Administrator.
I pull up that Excel Workbook and go into Data and do a Refresh All and it works.
I then bring up my copy of the Excel workbook I created for my SQL Server 2012 Cube (this does not work on SP 2013) and save it to my Business Center in SP 2010.  This will do a DATA Refresh on that workbook.
Another thing that I have done, (we have Office Web Apps Server running on the SP 2013 side), is set SPWOPISuppressSetting -view -extension xlsx so that when I bring up the Excel spreadsheet in 2013 it has a url with the xlviewer instead of the WOPI
    url.
OK.  I have went through all of my setup.   I am must wondering if I missed something in my install for this.  HELP.   There can't be that much difference in the installation between 2010 and 2013.
    Thanks in Advance everyone.

After many hours of research and totally burning down my SQL Server 2012 server because of the many changes I made to it, I finally found the issue that caused this and specifically why SP would not work with SQL Server 2012 Analysis Services.  This
time I reinstalled SQL Server 2012 from scratch again but only put SP1 on at this time.  I can't be completely sure this fixed the issue since I have not put any of the other CU  on the box.  But, after the reinstall, everything seemed to work
perfectly from the Excel Services side.
The issue I then ran into was that I could not get my PerformancePoint Services to work with my Cubes that were created on SQL Server 2012.  I received Error Message " The DataSource Provider for data sources of type 'ADOMD.NET' is not registered" on
my SharePoint 2013 Server Event Viewer.
I finally found this post on the issue:
    http://yossidahan.wordpress.com/2012/08/14/cant-get-ssas-databases-to-appear-in-performance-point-dashboard-designer-check-you-adomd-net-version/
Seems that SP 2013 is built to use SQL Server 2008 R2 Analysis Services, so you need to install the ADOMD.net from SQL Server 2008 in order for it to work.   But make sure you install Version 10 since if you install any other it doesn't seem to
    work.
I feel like I wasted a whole month tracking these issues down, and I haven't been able to test PowerView, PowerPivot or SSRS yet.  I hope there is not any more.

  • Powerpivot 2012 on Excel 2010 - External Data connections not saving passwords, having to re-enter password EVERYTIME I refresh data

    Hey Guys,
Using Excel 2010 with latest version of Powerpivot 2012 available 11.1.3129.0
For my SQL Server Data connections in Powerpivot I DO NOT have any issue, when clicking refresh it never asks me to enter a password and uses my Windows AD info.
However, for my plethora of other external data connections (Informix, Oracle, Etc...) that I would like to have fluid use within Powerpivot, big problems.
Lets start with Oracle. Below is a screenshot of my connection tab within Powerpivot.
So as you can see, all the details are entered and Allow Saving Password is selected. Now I will close out of Powerpivot and Excel completely and re-open. I will navigate to the Powerpivot tab
and select Powerpivot Window. And then will select to "Refresh All" and am quickly prompted with the "Data Source Credentials" window to re-enter my data source password, again.
What I have already tried. The above method for starters in which I use a connection string under Table Import Wizard --> Others (OLEDB/ODBC)... I found it the least annoying route, although
still have to re-enter password everytime, which is what I hope this forum can help with.
I also have tried doing a direct Oracle connection in Table Import Wizard but also does not eliminate my #1 problem.
I have also created an ODC file to try and use that with stored credentials within the file, also still asks for password each and everytime.
The same thing happens with my other data connections to Informix and DB2. So any help and/or suggestions anyone has would be great. I also cant upload these powerpivots to our powerpivot gallery
on SharePoint 2010, I have a sneaking suspicion it is due to the version of powerpivot I am currently using.
    Thanks

    Hi there,
My company is not using Excel 2013, only 2010. So that is what I have to work with. From what I have read this is a huge hole in the Powerpivot 2012 framework and is extremely frustrating. This seems so basic and simple and like something everyone using
this product would use, and yet it still doesnt work.
Great feedback. Connect is the right place for this feedback on 2010 as well. Thanks!

  • Concurrent Editing Excel Workbook Sharepoint Online

I am having an issue that hopefully someone out there has some experience with.
We have a deployment of Sharepoint online working right now and we are running into an issue where Excel documents can only be edited by 1 person at a time. I need for those workbooks be be able to allow multiple people to get in to edit concurrently.
I have went through the options to share workbook but that doesn't seem to work.
What am I missing? It seems like Sharepoint should allow for this type of behavior.

This topic first appeared in the Spiceworks Community

    Hi,
For your issue, there are some things you can try:
If you have Excel installed on your device, you can download the workbook and then open it in Excel.
If you have edit permissions to the workbook, you can try to
    reduce the workbook's file size.
If you do have Power BI for Office 365 and the workbook contains a Data Model, you can check to see if the workbook is visible in
Power BI sites on Power BI for Office 365 and
    enabled for web viewing.
    If you don’t already have
Power BI for Office 365, you can sign up for it. Ask your administrator for help with this.

  • Question about Sharepoint online ExcelService

Recently, I want to develop a customize app which need to get& save data from Excel which hosted on Sharepoint online. So I should use ExcelService web service(SOAP API). But when I use ExcelService.OpenWorkBook function based on Microsoft's guide,
system reports an error- "We couldn't find the file you wanted". Here is my code:
                Status[] outStatue;
                RangeCoordinates ranngeCoordinates = new RangeCoordinates();
                string sheetname = "Summary";
                string targetWorkBookpath = "XXXX";
                es.Credentials = new System.Net.NetworkCredential(userName, securePwd, "XXX.sharepoint.com");
                es.SoapVersion = SoapProtocolVersion.Soap12;
                string sessionId = es.OpenWorkbook(targetWorkBookpath, "en-US", "en-US", out outStatue);
So could you help me know:
    1. Whether Sharepoint online supports ExcelService web service(SOAP API), or whether can I get/save excel data by using ExcelService web service?
    2. Could you please provide me some related material or web reference to help me learn how can I get/save excel data by using ExcelService web service.
    3. Because Sharepoint online is based on Office 365, so it's mapped to Https, I guess system need do user authentication, how can I can do it in my code.

  • Creating a folder for a document library in SharePoint online

Hello I am looking for a good place to get started on creating a folder for a document library using a powershell script. Thanks in advance for any help.

Here is a guide to creating folders and items in a document library for SharePoint Server/Foundation: Creating SharePoint Folders
and Items with PowerShell. You will need to tailor it to your needs as it's a demo for creating 50,000 items.
That's step 1 and contains the bulk of what you would need to do. Here's an example of connecting to a library in SharePoint Online using CSOM: Office
365 - PowerShell Script to Upload Files to a Document Library using CSOM. You won't be uploading files, but the parts where you connect and get a list are what you're interested in.
Now you'll combine bits from both of these scripts:
    1. Connect to SPO
    2. Get your list (looks like you need to first get the site collection and then the site)
    3. Create a folder
I figure it would look something like this (note I haven't tested this at all):
#Specify tenant admin and site URL
    $User = "[email protected]"
    $SiteURL = "https://tenant.sharepoint.com/sites/site"
    $DocLibName = "DocLib"$FolderTitle = "Example Folder"
#Add references to SharePoint client assemblies and authenticate to Office 365 site - required for CSOM
    Add-Type -Path "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\15\ISAPI\Microsoft.SharePoint.Client.dll"
    Add-Type -Path "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\15\ISAPI\Microsoft.SharePoint.Client.Runtime.dll"
$Password = Read-Host -Prompt "Please enter your password" -AsSecureString

  • Communicate (CRUD) with CRM Online from SharePoint Online

    Hi,
I'm working on an offer to a client where I'm considering if I'll recommend SharePoint Online.
Most of the requirements from the client are out of the box SharePoint and doesn't affect the decision to go for SharePoint Online. However, the client has one requirement, which is that they need to be able to update Entities/records in their CRM Online
solution from SharePoint. I'm not sure how those updates should be triggered, but my guess is it should be triggered when an item in a list/document library changes it's status (a status field). This would probably require custom development of some sort (Event
Receiver? Workflow?) which uses the CRM web services.
Is this even possible in SP Online?
I've done a lot of searching for this in Google, but haven't found anything interesting yet. I come across solutions for integration the other way though (FROM CRM to SharePoint), but I need integration with CRM FROM SharePoint.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you want to communicate SharePoint Online and CRM Online.
We can use the Business Connectivity Services (BCS) to communicate SharePoint Online (SPO) to CRM Online.
The following blog for your reference:

  • SharePoint Online - storage options (large exiting file store)

We would like to implement a SharePoint Online solution to provide remote access to shared files.
Ideally we would migrate our existing file store, but this is well over 500GB. Is SharePoint a viable solution for storing large volumes of data? I had looked into the possibility of RBS, but this is unsupported for SharePoint Online.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Hi sara_williams79. SharePoint Online can be used for large file stores but you should be aware of some key limitations. Each site collection in SharePoint Online can store a maximum of 100GB of data; so you would need at least 6 site collections for
your data. Maximum file size in SharePoint Online is 2GB. Any files over that size will not upload.
Document libraries in SharePoint Online can hold millions of documents but any library that holds over 5,000 items (or 20,000 in SkyDrive Pro library) will cause issues for some client tools like SkyDrive Pro sync client. Therefore do plan
for some time to check and reorganise your data to fit within the storage constraints and the SkyDrive Pro sync client (on the libraries you plan to use with it).
Further information about SharePoint Online storage boundaries is documented here:
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/office365-sharepoint-online-enterprise-help/sharepoint-online-software-boundaries-and-limits-HA102694293.aspx
Are you planning to migrate users' home folders to SharePoint Online? SharePoint Online offers a good solution for this kind of data; each user receives 25GB of personal file storage in their SkyDrive Pro site which can be increased to a maximum 100GB.

  • Reporting Services connecting to a PowerPivot Workbook hosted on Sharepoint Online

    Hi,
we developed a PowerPivot Workbook and published on our PowerBI site based on a Sharepoint Online E3 subscription.
We use it to display PowerView Dashboard and analyse sales results.
On-prem we also have a Reporting Services (stand alone installation) server where we have reports the connect directly to our datawarehouse based on a MS Sql Server DB instance.
What I would like to do is to develop a report in SSRS that connects to the PowerPivot Workbook published on our Sharepoint Online/Power BI site.
I tried following the instruction in this article http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg413489(v=sql.110).aspx but using an URL like https://mycopmany.sharepoint.com/sites/BI/Documents/Workbook.xlsx and the correct Sharepoint Online credentials to access
the PowerPivot Workbook, I always get a "File Not Found" error.
I would like to know if what I would like to do is possible and how to do it.
    Thank you,
    Roberto

    Roberto,
    Is this still an issue?
