Data Modeler - Adding Connections
I used the datamodeler to create a Class diagram for a project but it will not allow me to add connections from
one class to another. Also, I would like to be able to add text fields in order to put a title or comments on the diagram. Am I missing a toolbar?
Don't think datasocket can connect to telnet port. You can read text files from FTP sites but don't beleive you can connect to telnet.
If you have internet toolkit for LabVIEW, you can establish telnet sessions to remote servers.

Data modeler cannot connect to non-default sql server instance
I've just started using DM, it installed and loaded fine, I got the jdbc drivers v2.0 from MS so that I can reverse engineer a couple of SQL-Server 2005 DB's.
All worked just fine until I tried to connect to a machine with a named-sql-server instance.
Normal way of doing this for sql-server is to add instance name to end of hostname in the hostname field, like this: "server10\inst01"
but this gives me a cannot-connect-to-server10 error.
I copied database over to a different server that has just a default sql-server instance and it worked fine. (both sql-server2005 and 2000!)
I also tried the older 1.2 jdbc driver from MS against the sql-server 2005 named instance, no luck!
I tried putting the instance name in front of the port number, that didn't work either.
Am I just doing something wrong? or does DM need a special way of specifying the instance name on the sql-server host?Hello,
you don't need instance name in order to connect. It's only host and port - probably named instance is not listening on default port. It'll be unfortunate if dynamic port assignment is used - but probably that won't be the case.
I hope someone can tell you the port number.

Invalid Name Pattern in SQL Developer Data Modeler
I am using Data Modeler version 3.3.0.747, I have exported a couple of data models (logical and physical) to an Oracle 11.2.0.3 database. I used the Reporting_Schema_Permissions.sql file to define the ID that owns the repository. Each data model that I exported returned the successful export message.
However when I use Oracle Data Modeler and connect (as a different user) to the repository to generate a report on one of the diagrams I immediately get an error returned. The error is (from the log file in datamodeler\log\datamodeler.log):
2013-04-19 08:36:12,233 [Thread-18] ERROR ReportsGenerationDialog - Generating report from Reporting Schema exception - invalid name pattern: username.OBJECTS_LIST
Where username is the name of the ID being used to generate the report (not the repository owner ID).
I have created public synonyms on the repository tables and views (though I must have missed where that was a requirement) so the repository objects can be seen by other users.
Has anyone encountered this and if so how did you resolve it. I have searched the web (and the Oracle forums) and so far had no hits on this issue. That seems to indicate that there is something I must have missed in the setup or such.
ThanksHi,
I think you didn't grant EXECUTE to package and types. Here is full working script:
DECLARE
CURSOR cur IS SELECT table_name, owner FROM all_tables WHERE owner='<owner>';
BEGIN
FOR rec IN cur LOOP
EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'GRANT SELECT ON '||'<owner>'||'.'||rec.table_name||' to '||'<another_user>';
EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'CREATE SYNONYM '||'<another_user>'||'.'||rec.table_name||' FOR '||'<owner>'||'.'||rec.table_name;
END LOOP;
END;
DECLARE
CURSOR cur IS SELECT view_name FROM all_views WHERE owner='<owner>';
BEGIN
FOR rec IN cur LOOP
EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'GRANT SELECT ON '||'<owner>'||'.'||rec.view_name||' to '||'<another_user>';
EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'CREATE SYNONYM '||'<another_user>'||'.'||rec.view_name||' FOR '||'<owner>'||'.'||rec.view_name;
END LOOP;
END;
DECLARE
CURSOR cur IS SELECT type_name FROM all_types WHERE owner='<owner>';
BEGIN
FOR rec IN cur LOOP
EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'GRANT EXECUTE ON '||'<owner>'||'.'||rec.type_name||' to '||'<another_user>';
EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'CREATE SYNONYM '||'<another_user>'||'.'||rec.type_name||' FOR '||'<owner>'||'.'||rec.type_name;
END LOOP;
END;
GRANT EXECUTE ON <owner>.pkg_osdm_utils to <another_user>;
CREATE SYNONYM <another_user>.pkg_osdm_utils FOR <owner>.pkg_osdm_utils;
There is no document for reporting repository install process. If you are exporting design for first time, the repository is automatically created for you.
When you get new version of DM you can
1. Use new repository
2. Upgrade existing one. If so, the simplest variant is to run /datamodeler/reports/DMRS_Upgrade_Script_<latest_vesrion>. Eventually compile single stored procedure.
Another variant for upgrade is with running osddm_upgr.sql, but there is some error, which is going to be fixed in the next release. -
The Data Model connection could not be created
Hello,
Using powerquery, I am trying to access daily logs conveniently, the are over 24m records in a month.
I have selected the columns i need, and checked the box ' load data to Model', Once the query has ran it returns the error, "The Data Model connection could not be created".
Thank you for any help on this :)This is a tough one because as an add-in, we can't get much information from the API for failures like this. Our general recommendation for people working with big data sets is to use 64-bit Excel. I realize that's a big hammer, but it might be your only
option if you need to work with a 24 million row data set.
Another option (which you may have already done) is to filter and aggregate that dataset as much as possible before adding it back into Excel. The analysis done inside the Power Query editor is less likely to negatively affect the working set on your machine.
(It does depend how the query is built and where the data is come from. If we have to pull all the data into memory to do some of the operations then it won't help at all.) -
Hello:
Our configurations is as follow : SharePoint 2013 is on Server A; SQL Server Analysis server (SQL 2014) is on DB Server B;
SharePoint databases (sp_ ...) and our Data Mart (SQL 2014) are on server B. All servers runs Windows 2012 OS.
On my desktop I built a simple Excel 2013 workbook with PowerPivot Data Model that imported several tables from our Data Mart (server B above). Then created a Power View report. Locally everything works fine.
But when I uploaded this workbook to our SharePoint PowerPivot gallery and was trying to refresh data, I got the connection error: It’s very long but the ErrorCode is “rsCannotRetriveModel”. The end of the error message is:

Our Excel Services on the SharePoint work fine and refresh data on different excel workbooks (with no Data Model) just fine. We are using an unattended account for Excel Services to connect from SharePoint server to our databases. Found a few references

Jeff GorvitsHi Jeff,
Firstly, I need to confirm whether you are refreshing Data connection in browser, since Data Refresh is not supported in Office Web Apps. Please refer more information in this article:
http://blogs.technet.com/b/excel_services__powerpivot_for_sharepoint_support_blog/archive/2013/01/31/powerpivot-for-sharepoint-browser-refresh-fails-data-refresh-not-supported-in-office-web-apps.aspx
From the error "Call to Excel Services returned an error", please verify the location of the
data source, for example an Excel workbook, is registered as a trusted location with Excel Services:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj219699(v=office.15).aspx
Since you are using unattended account for Excel Services to connect from SP to databases, I wonder if the issue occurs to unattended referesh, if so, please refer to:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/3870.troubleshoot-powerpivot-data-refresh.aspx#Problems_using_the_Unattended_data_refresh_account

Error while Adding Profit Center Data element to Data Model of MDG-M
Hello gurus,
Can any one help me in adding profit center filed (Data element) to zztable, basically want to use the Data Element (PRCTR).
Getting error" There is an attribute with data element assigned that refers to a check table. Besides the client, the check table can only have one key field that corresponds to the attribute.
Regards,
MandapatiHi Mandapati,
looks like you are assigning data element in existing attribute or you are assigning data element more than once.
Try to create a new attribute and then assign the Data Element (PRCTR).
Go to General Settings-> Data Modeling-> Edit Data Model.
Select your datamodel( note that it should be MDGM data model. For MDG the MDGM data model is called MM. We can only add pre-delivered SAP ERP material master database field to an MDGM entity as an attribute)
Select the entity types and then the attributes subdialog.
Create a new attribute and assign a data element. The system then derives the properties, field labels for the attribute

Unable to create a connection in data modeler with oracle 9i
While creating a connection to my 9i db I am getting the following error
Status : Failure -Test failed: oracle.i18n.text.converter.CharacterConverterOGS.getInstance(I)Loracle/i18n/text/converter/CharacterConverter;Hi,
This problem when importing from Data Dictionary can occur intermittently if you have the Oracle 9i or 10g database software installed on your computer.
Ivan provided a workaround in a previous message in this forum Re: Error when testing database connection :
Try to create a batch file (datamodeler.bat) under Data Modeler installation folder and put the following two lines in it:
set ORACLE_HOME=%CD%
start datamodeler.exe
Then double click on this file to start Data Modeler.

Reporting Services (SSRS) connecting to a Tabular data model: losing formatting
Hi all,
we are developing a SSAS Tabular data model to enable users to connect to it via:
- excel pivot table
- power view reports
- reporting services reports
We invested a lot of time in correctly setting the format of the different columns directly in the data model, in order to have the same consistence format layout in all the reporting clients. For example currencies column with no decimals and with thousand
separator, percentage with just 1 decimal and with the % symbol, date in short date format and so on.
The same with KPIs: for every KPI we decided in the data model which representation to use
When using excel pivot table or power view reports everything works ad expected.
When using Reporting Services instead all the formatting chosend in the data model is gone and also the KPI representations. Why? Is there a way to have them also in SSRS?
Thank you,
RobertoHi jdb09,
Your issue can be caused by many factors, it can be caused by the connection string is not correct, please check to make sure the it is correct.
Please check details information below to make sure you have done the correct connection and configuration first:

Can't create connection with Data Modeler 2.0.0 570
I have installed SQL Developer Data Modeler on my Windows Vista Home Premium system and am unable to create a connection to import a Data Dictionary. When I select TNS from the connection type dropdown list , I get a message below that states: 'Warning ORACLE_HOME environment variable is not set'.
This is odd, since I use SQL Developer daily on this same system with no issues. I have checked with regedit and the ORACLE_HOME environment variable is indeed set.
Any ideas?I ran into a similar where Data Modeler was finding the TNSNAMES.ORA file for the older Oracle 8i client (which I have to keep installed because some older legacy software depends on it) rather than the 10g client. My solution was to make use of a suggestion for a simialr problem with SQL Developer and create a DOS "cmd" file in the "+<data modeler install dir>+\datamodeler" directory that sets the ORACLE_HOME environment variable to my 10g client directory and then runs "datamodeler.exe". My file is named "datamodeler.cmd" and contains the following two lines:
SET ORACLE_HOME=C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\client_1
start datamodeler.exe

Data Modeler 3 (EA1): Connection issue when connecting to oracle 11R2
Hi all,
When I try to create a connection object for a oracle 11r2 database I get the following error:
ORA-00604: error occurred at recursive SQL level 1
ORA-22285: non-existent directory or file for FILEEXISTS operation
ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_LOB", line 725
ORA-06512: at line 5
when I test the connection.
I have checked the oracle 11r2 instance and have 3 directory objects and all are correct;
SYS ORACLE_OCM_CONFIG_DIR /opt/oracle/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.1/ccr/state
SYS DATA_PUMP_DIR /opt/oracle/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.1/rdbms/log/
SYS XMLDIR /opt/oracle/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.1/rdbms/xml
What can cause this problem. I have the same issue with the older version of the data modeler
ThanksHey if you want me too I can create a tar/sr.
It happens even when I log in as sysdba. The three directory objects on the file system are all owned by oracle and oracle can rwx into those.
My user can see XMLDIR but does not have read/write on the directory object all other it does have read write.
Thanks.

Connection to SQL Developer Data Modeler Fails
All,
I am using Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler version 3.0.0.665 in an Oracle 10g database environment. When I try to import DDLs, I get the following error message:
NoSuchMethodError:
oracle.i18.ntext.converter.CharacterConverterOGS.getInstance(I)Loracle/i18n/text/converter/CharacterConverter;I use the same connection profile in Oracle SQL Developer version 1.5.0.53, and my connection works fine there, but the same credentials in SQL Developer Data Modeler fails with the above error message. Any thoughts what causes this connection problem?
Thank you,
SeyedHi Philip,
Thank you so much for the information. Your suggested solution resolved my problem. For some reason when I first installed the Data Modeler, it worked fine and I was able to save the result into PDF files. Then my connection went bad and I posted this question on this forum.
Again thank you very much,
Seyed -
Data Modeler unable to connect to DB
I am using OS/X 10.8.5. I have SQL Developer and Instant Client 11.2 installed and working fine.
I have recently installed Oracle Data Modeler 3.3.0.747 and am trying to synchronize my model with the DB.
When I try and add a connection if I set the connection type to TNS (which works just fine in SQL Developer), it doesn't show any of my tnsnames.ora entries in the 'Network Alias' drop down.
So I instead tried creating a connection of type 'Basic'. That _seemed_ to work OK - in that when I clicked 'Test' on the connection it returned success. However when I tried to use that connection it returned immediately with the error 'Closed Connection'.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.
SteveMaybe you need to install Oracle instant client . I had something similar to what you describe - can't rememeber if it was exactly the same , but I (think) I fixed it that way

I have a data model with a single PowerPivot connection to an Oracle database. This model had eight tables in it which all use the same "Existing Connection". I can get the Query from the first Table connection using Command Text, however,
I do not know how to get the CommandText of each of the additional tables associated with the same connection.
With wsConnList
.Cells(lngRow, 1).Value = wbTarget.Connections("Conn").Name
.Cells(lngRow, 2).Value = wbTarget.Connections("Conn").OLEDBConnection.CommandText
End With
Thanks, BarbaraAny suggestions for the amazing Barbara on this topic?
Barbara, you can also ask the BI Advisors if we're not having luck here.

AllFusion Erwin Data Modeler Connection to SAP NW2004s Systems
We would like to use a data modeling product that we purchased for many of our SAP NW systems. We understand that there may be some restrictions on DB direct user connections and would like to confirm the following from those that may have exposure in this area:
1. If we connection the DM product to SAP, are there any restrictions on the data that is read from the SAP DB?
2. Are we violating any SAP license agreement by using the third party tool for data modeling on our SAP NW systems (since it will require a DB connection)?
3. Any other helpful information?
Any guidance would be very much appreciated.
Thanks and best regards,
ChrisHi Chris,
How does your DM product plan on "connecting" to the SAP applications? Most of the time, SAP applications provide Remote Function Calls (RFC) (i.e. in the programming world, methods) for programmers to call in order to push or pull data to itself. There are no restrictions here aside from the normal authorizations given to access data on the application. Although SAP discourages any direct manipulations directly to the database layer.

PowerPivot removed table replicated into the data model on refresh
Hey
I am facing the following problem which is absolutely persistent and annoying in nature. I am using a data model created with PowerPivot with connections to three different SQL servers and 25 tables. The bug is that every time I refresh my data, a table
that was initially added to the data model (and later removed) is replicated in equivalent number of tables that use this connection, which is currently around 12 tables, so I get 12 duplicates of the same unnecessary table on every refresh, named with the
name of the schema on the SQL server that is followed by a running number. Removing these from the data model on every refresh simply takes too much time on a daily basis. The additional undesired table which is created is what is defined in the SQL query
of the connection string of this connection.
I tried to solve this problem by zipping the Excel file and modifying this SQL statement present in the connection string in the connections.xml file in a way that it would not return anything, but this always leads into a corrupted workbook.
After encountering this I have managed to avoid this problem by making sure that the initial table I'm adding to the data model will remain in the model, but I really don't want to rebuild this current model. Is there any fix for this issue without
rebuilding the data model?
Thanks for all the help in advance!I am using 64-bit Office 2013 with the recent SP1 upgrade and the included PowerPivot plug-in on a Windows 8.1 machine.
I always create the connection by using "From SQL server" then fill in the server and log in details and use a ready SQL statement that I have written by using SQL Server Management Studio to import the initial table. For all the preceding tables
using the same server and schema, I always select it from existing connections and just paste the SQL queries required for any additional tables to the "Write a query that will specify the data to import", rather than using the table import tool.
I am not sure if it could have any effect that I've been using the type connection "From SQL server" although the database is really running on Azure (there is a possibility to select From Other sources > Microsoft SQL Azure, but the functionality
seems the same).
I don't really understand what I should edit from the existing connections section. Just to clarify, apparently the Connection String parameters can be edited from PowerPivot, but not the Command Text which can be viewed from Excel Data > Connections
> Properties, but is shown in gray with a message "Some properties cannot be changed because this connection was modified using the PowerPivot add-in."
In the data model I am using two sets of identical tables, but connected to two different servers that are running a database 1:1 in structure. Initially the problem considered only the other of these, but I accidentally reproduced it by, again, editing
the SQL query in the table that was initially imported when that connection was created (PowerPivot > Design > Table Properties). Now when refreshing I get tables that are structured as in what the "Connection Text" part of the connection would
produce, which replicated for the equivalent amount of additional tables using the same connection, so now I'm getting 12 tables (the number of tables using the same connection) each named "*schemaname1* Query", "*schemaname1* Query2",
"*schemaname1* Query3" "*schemaname2* Query" and so on.
Personally I can definitely see a pattern here. If there isn't a table matching what has been specified in the "Command Text" that was described when the connection was created, then it for some reason runs this query anyway on every table that
is using the connection.
