DB Autogrowth settings - Service Applications and content DBs

Hi - is there any documentation out there that provides specifics for the initial size and autogrowth settings for the SP2013 service application databases?
I'm aware that the content DBs will vary and thus impossible to define settings except to note that autogrowth needs to be set in MB not %. But for service app DBs surely there must be some guidelines on initial sizing?
Thanks
J

Nope. If anything it's even harder to define.
A search service database might be a couple of hundred Meg for one customer and another may have to scale it out to multiple databases. MMS can vary hugely in scale and scope as can most of the other service apps.
The main thing to note for service apps is that they have custom fill levels for the index. That means you shouldn't use any one-size-fits-all re-index processes as you were able to do in 2010.
My general advice is not to bother with tuning the Service App databases. Only start worrying about them when you're really pushed on performance.

  • App Management and Subscription Settings service applications

    Hi,
I am upgradind SharePoint 2010 services to SharePoint 2013. I have updated UPS, Metadata, Search, Secure Store and now I want to configure App Management and Subscription Settings service applications.
For all upgraded services I used default IIS pool: 'SharePoint Web Services default'. But now I see that for App Management and Subscription Settings service Mifrosoft uses new iis pools in the configuration guide:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/fp161236(v=office.15).aspx
Could you please advise if I can use defaulf pool 'SharePoint Web Services default' to configure App Management and Subscription Settings service applications?
If not can I use one pool for both services or should I use separate pool for each service?
    Thanks

You cannot move the STS. Also, certain SAs right farm admin rights. If the farm will leverage those SAs, I'd encourage you to create a new App Pool for just those SAs, rather than re-use "SharePoint Web Services Default" (to prevent these SAs from
    running under the Farm Admin).

  • Service applications and services

What is the difference between services and service applications in sharepoint 2013. I am talking about
    1. Application Management->Service Applications -> Manage service applications
    2. Application Management->Service Applications -> Manage Services
They both are listed under service applications
Also if I create a Managed Metadata service from Application Management->Service Applications -> Manage service applications->New  it
wont turn on Managed Metadata Web Service by itself during the process. So how are they tied to each other.
    @R

    Take a look at: http://www.harbar.net/articles/sp2010sa2.aspx
Correct, if you create a Service Application, it doesn't automatically start the service instance (as you may want the SA, but only want to run the SI on specific SharePoint servers). Where the SI runs is where the actual 'work' for that SA occurs.

  • Userprofile Service Application and Active Directory

Hi expert Advance thanks to all,
I am little bit confuse in User profile appn. Please find below snap and give solution...

    Hi,
I think you should follow below link to get details about User Profile Service 2010 and 2013:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee662538%28v=office.15%29.aspx
And if you change or delete user from AD then it will effect UPA as following:
The disabled/deleted accounts will no longer be imported, and will no longer be available in the User Profiles record set. That's the short answer. But I bet what you really wanted to know is what effect this will have on the active users' experience and
SharePoint sites and documents created by a now disabled/deleted account. I'm no definative voice, but here are a few items I've witnessed after the change and how they are affected:
The dynamic organizational chart: You will see an immediate effect of the disabled/deleted accounts no longer appearing.
My Site: The site is not automatically deleted. This is by design, allowing an administrator to move any content stored on the site first. The My Site Cleanup timer job can be configured to assign administrator rights to the user's My Site
to a designated person (such as the user's manager) to facilitate this process. The My Site will continue to show up in search results until deleted.
References to the user as the creator or modifier of a document: these will not be deleted. Each site keeps its own list of users for this purpose. (For example, you may not want Joan to show up as an active employee after she retires, but
you still want people to be able to search for documents authored by Joan - she really knew her stuff!)
Site Owner/Library or List Level Authority These will not be deleted. You will need to use an account with higher level or same level account to change these. There are some third party tools that specialize in just such permission control
management. While I haven't had to do this, I presume that these types of changes could also be scripted through PowerShell as well.

  • Is it possible to deploy SharePoint or its Service Applications on: multiple DB-Servers and multiple SQL Instances?

    Hello Forum,
We have a SharePoint 2013 farm (Enterprise edition) that uses one single SQL Server 2012 (Standard edition). That statement means: All my SharePoint DBs e.g. (Config, Admin, Content, and Service Apps) DBs are hosted and running onto one single instance e.g.
    Server1\SQLInstance1.
We have some new requirements to install and configure BI tools such as: PerformancePoint services and PowerPivot. BI tools require either SQL Server 2012 Enterprise or BI editions, and we do NOT want to upgrade our current SQL Server1\SQLInstance1
Instead, We have other separate SQL Server instance which is enterprise edition let's name it (ServerX\InstanceX) that is running standalone, and we are thinking or using it, and my 2 questions are:
    1) Can we use this other separate
SQL Server instance which is enterprise edition to host the create and hosts the DBs of PerformancePoint services and PowerPivot ?
    2) My second question is the same: Can I create PerformancePoint services application in my SharePoint farm, But in the Database Server field, I fill up
the details of the other DB server ServerX\InstanceX  which is the one that is SQL
enterprise edition ? Will this work ?
Any official Microsoft resources/links tell that it is possible to deploy SharePoint or its service applications on multiple DB-Servers and multiple SQL Instances?

    Thank you Alex and Anil,
What are the ramifications of that?
I mean, Assuming that I have created such a farm where most of SarePoint DBs in Standard SQL instance while the PerformancePoint service application and others e.g. PowerPivot and reporting service are deployed and configured onto other Enterprise SQL instance.
Are there any recommendations or concerns that you would like to draw my attention to ?

  • How are permissions applied between Web Applications and from Service Applications?

I'm quite confused about how permissions are applied to Content Databases in relation to service accounts. So, as an example, I have two web applications - Intranet whose service account is DOMAIN\sps_webapp_default - and My Sites whose service account is
DOMAIN\sps_webapp_social.  The "sps_webapp_social" account has full control (through User Policy) to the Intranet web app.
When I go to My Sites> Sites> Suggested Links and click on any suggestions I get the below error and the site is not "followed".  This Content Database sits under the Intranet web app which the sps_webapp_social has full control to.
I'm also getting similar permission issues when the account that runs various service applications tries to connect to the DB (such as workflow service).  This is happening to new or migrated sites.  I know permissions can be applied directly
in SQL but this can't be the way to do it?
Is there a simple reason why these permissions aren't propagating through?

I resolved my issue. I deleted the Work Management Service Application and created it again - this time, I made sure the IIS Pool (I created its own application pool) service account running this was the same as the My Site service account.
So, running under DOMAIN\sps_webapp_social.  This seemed to clear up all of my permissions issues being thrown up in Event Viewer too.
My Sites really is a complicated beast...  I'm getting there.  Hopefully this helps somebody else!

  • Ports required for communication between Web servers and service applications (the default is HTTP)

We're using SharePoint 2010, I'm the system admin for a SharePoint farm. We enabled SharePoint Search by adding a Search Service APplication. One of the crawl report timer job is failing every 5 minte with the error "Cannot connect to remote server".
After digging around, we found that the server running the timer job tries to connect to the SearchAdmin.svc on the index server, over HTTPS / port 32844 However, communication over SSL via a non default port is blocked by our firewall.
According to this article: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262849.aspx the default is HTTP for communication
between web servers. How is it possible that it's trying to connect over SSL?

    Hi,
    Quoted from
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262849.aspx#ServiceApp :
You can change the protocol and port binding for each service application. On the Service Applications page in Central Administration, select the service application, and then click
    Publish.
Here is an article for configuring Windows firewall port rules for SharePoint using PowerShell in case you need:

  • SP2013 "Create Service Applicationt" and "Service Applications' Property" buttons are disabled

    Hello,
I’ve verified that I am local admin on the server that is hosting central admin.
I run the browser as admin. In fact I am using Central Admin on the start menu. The UAC is disabled on the box any way
I run the browser on the machine that is hosing CA. I've tested in on many other machines.
I verified and my user is farm admin. That means I can see my logged-in user listed in CA->“Manage the farm administrators group”
    IE Enhanced Security is off
Still I cannot create a service application or see any service application’s property. How to find where exactly is the problem?
    Thank you

    Hi Allan48,
What did you mean ‘cannot create a service application’?
Whether you meaned that the New service application button was disabled or not services applications were listed when you clicked the button.
By default, there are some services applications whose properties are disabled, for example Access Services Application and Excel Services Application etc.
Please make sure that SharePoint Web Services Root Application pool is running in Internet Information Services Manager, then check if this issue occurres.
    I hope this helps.

  • How to remove farm account from Application Discovery and Load Balancer Service Application

    Hello Community
Using Sharpoint 2010 Server I think the reason
the User Profile Synchronization would stop is because somehow the farm
account was registered as a managed account.  So I removed the farm
account from all services that ran under the farm account so that I could
run Remove-SPManagedAccount or click the Remove icon in manage service accounts
and then unregisted farm account as a managed account.
But before I can run Remove-SPManagedAccount I need to remove it from one more
service account that uses the farm account which is:
"Application Discovery and Load Balanceer Service Account".
However, nothing seems to remove it from there.
        I tried :
    "get-spserviceapplication | where {$_.TypeName -match "Application Discovery and Load Balancer Service Application"}
        and then
    "stop-spserviceinstance "dde7fbef-b068-4687-bedb-f67230efab5a"
amongst a host of other methods so that I could ultimately
unregister farm account as a managed account.
But no matter what I do when I try to remove the farm account from Application Discovery
    and Load Balancer Service Application
and then unregister the farm account as a managed account a message always says
"Application Discovery and Load Balancer Service Application" is using the farm account
    as its service account.
What can I do to free the farm account from Application Discovery and Load Balancer Service Application?
        Thank you
        Shabeaut

The Farm Account is always a Managed Account and can never be "unmanaged". You don't have to set the automatic password roll.

  • App-V 5.0 Reporting Application and Package Information Not Available

I have SQL Reporting Services set up and Excel and am able to interrogate AppVReporting DB using both. The problem is the Application and Packaging DBs do not appear to be populating.
The Client information definitely is and I can see it is updating correctly as it is showing the PCs that have been upgraded to HF4. The other two are empty. The reports run fine just with no content in them.
There is nothing obvious in the Client-Reporting debug log on the client. If I manually do the Send- PS command I get a confirmation it has uploaded successfully. What I can't get is why one part of it appears to be updating correctly but not another but
there is no separation anywhere that would explain it.
I am guessing that it may be something to with a permission issue but hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. The only other thing I think a little bit strange when looking through the client settings is Reporting is enabled when I check
in Powershell but if I go through regedit and look at the App-V 5.0 client reporting settings Reporting Enabled =0. May be a red herring but just thought I would include if it rings any bells for anyone.

The log give multiple error 'Unable to load word breaker for locale 0. Error code 8007007e.'
The default language is English and the reference in registry for word breaker dll is naturallanguage1.dll but I found only the naturallanguage6.dll.

    Hi,
For your issue, check your current language settings and ensure that search supports the current language.
On the SharePoint Server open Registry Editor (Start -> type “Regedit” and hit enter).
    Point to : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\OfficeServer\14.0\Search\Setup\ContentIndexCommon\LanguageResources\Default\English
Under the registry key for each of the languages there is a value called StemmerDLLPath and WBDLLPathOverride
Updated the registry entry with NATURA~1.dll to NATURA~2.dll
Point to Start -> Administrative Tools -> Services, right click on SharePoint Server Search 14 and click on Restart.
Performed a Full Crawl and wait for the Full Crawl to complete and try searching again.

  • Search Service Application problems after upgrading from Foundation to Enterprise edition of SharePoint 2013

Hi all. I have been searching for days for a solution to a problem I am having with SP2013 Enterprise edition.
We recently upgraded from SP2013 Foundation to SP2013 Enterprise. After the upgrade, the search services are no longer working and we are receiving many application log entries indicating the following:

I have tried to remove the search service application and recreate it, and even though the SharePoint Central Administration states that it was created successfully, I am still getting the same errors in the log. If I go to the Search Service Application
Search Administration page, the "System Status" shows the following message:
The search service is not able to connect to the machine that hosts the administration component. Verify that the administration component '0359af35-0982-4ede-8838-b1d390e915bf' in search application 'Search Service Application' is in a good state and
    try again
Additionally, under the "Search Application Topology" section, it states "Unable to retrieve topology component health states. This may be because the admin component is not up and running" which I assume is normal if the admin is not
    running.
Does anyone know how I can resolve this problem?
    Thanks!

    Hi Joaquin,
According to your description, the error occurred when you re-created the Search Service Application.
Based on the error message, I recommend to verify the things below:
       1. Check if the association between the Search Service Application proxy and the web application is configured.
Please go to Central Administration > Application Management > Configured service application associations > Click Default to see if the Search Service application is checked.
       2. Change the app pool for the Search Service Application to SharePoint Web Services Default in the properties of the Search Service Application.
Please go to Central Administration > Application Management > Manage service applications > Highlight the Search Service Application > Click Properties in the ribbon > Change
the two app pool to SharePoint Web Services Default: App Pool For Search Admin Web Service and Application Pool for Search Query and Site Settings Web Service.
        3. Run PS command to check if the search admin timer job is enabled: Get-SPTimerJob
job-application-server-admin-service | fl. If it is not enabled, use PS command to enabled it and then reset Internet Information Services: Enable-SPTimerJob job-application-server-admin-service.

  • Report Server - Error creating Service Application

I am adding a report server to the farm for a customer.  This is a SharePoint 2010 Foundation Farm with one SQL server, one SharePoint server and I have just added a Report Server to the Farm.
I installed SharePoint on the report server and added it to the farm. I then installed SQL 2012 Report Services SharePoint Integration Add-on and Database Engine to the Report Server.   I added the Report Services and Proxy via PowerShell and everything
seemed to be working.   I then configured the Report Services Service Application with the Report database being on the report server and once I clicked submit it just spins and never completed the process. When I look at the event viewer I see three
    errors.
    Error 1

    Microsoft.ReportingServices.Sharepoint.SharedService.Service.DoWork.TimerJob threw an exception.
    The HTTP service located at

    Error 2
The value of UrlRoot in rsreportserver.config is not valid. The default value will be used instead.
    Error 3
An exception occurred while updating address for connected app. The uri endpoint information may be stale.
I also noticed that I can not access reporting services configuration manager.  When I go to the reporting service configuration manager and enter the report server as the server name and click find to select the instance I get an error.

Did nothing to this server just hold the existing content and config database.
    Report Server
Installed SharePoint 2010 Foundations and attached it to the farm.
Ran PowerShell Script to add SQL Reporting Service Application and Proxy
    Started SQL Reporting Service
Installed SQL 2012 including the following components
    Database Engine Services
    Reporting Services - SharePoint
Reporting Services Add-in for SharePoint Products
    Management Tools
Created a new Reporting Services Service Application - created a new app pool and used the Report server name as the database for the reports
This is where it would seem to get stuck when I would try to create the service application
I am very familiar with sharepoint but have not added a report server to the farm before.  Can you tell me what it is trying to do when it created the service application
    Thank you for your time
