Dbx rtc shared memory check

Hi!
There are two programs (server + client ) which are interconnected via shared mem.
When Im trying to check client program with dbx( -C and check -access ), server is always dumping core in protocol classes of shmem and client is hanging on handshaking procedure. Is there is any way to disable DBX RTC(access checks ) to put traps or mark somehow the shared memory which is used by client program ?

Hi Leonard!
Threre is the problem with sources and stuff for server binary - it is "third side" software with no syms at all. so the core file is quite useless.
Ive found out the way to run correctly with server and mem access check - it is all about servers parameters about places(addr + page size rounding) of shmem and also Ive figured out another problem - there is an errors in server logs for semaphors and shmem lock calls. It looks like dbx is trapping whole mmap area from client.
Im still on investigation so I will post any usefull results here.
btw, skippatch is working quite strange actually...
Here is an example:
%dbx -C ./some_binary
(dbx)modules > ./loaded_modules
do some preparation stuff with output files so the file should looks like this( Ive ran with sed ):
rtc skippatch wait3.o
rtc skippatch wait4.o
rtc skippatch waitid.o
rtc skippatch waitpid.o
rtc skippatch walkstack.o
(dbx)check -access
(dbx) <copy/paste prepared file >
(dbx)run
theoretically, RTC should not work at all just because generated and pasted file contains all objects and librarys which is used by target binary.
but actually, RTC is patching and working as usual.
ps. 5.10 Generic_138888-01 sun4u sparc SUNW,Netra-T12 with dbx 7.7 ( from sunstudio 12.1 ).
pps. Ive read your short HOWTO about DBX RTC usage from the blog - very useful! Tommorow I will try to go with LD_AUDIT option.

  • Issue in enabling dbx rtc for memory leak analysis

    Any help on this is highly appreciated ...
    Following is the issue:
    pass@odcsmoke1> dbx -C xfer
    changes (topic)
    The major new features of this release relative to 6.1 are:
    o The dbx environment variable "rtc_use_traps" has been removed.
    Traps are used automatically as long as the hardware is UltraSparc.
    o There is now some basic support for looking at core files from
    different versions of Solaris. See `help core mismatch' for details.
    o Stepping to a specific function support. See `help step to' for details.
    o Fortran intrinsics support on Intel has been removed.
    o Dbx automatically translates some old dbxenv variables to their new
    names. See `help dbxenv' for details.
    o The default command-line editing mode is now emacs. See "How do I enable
    command-line editing?" in FAQ for details (`help FAQ').
    o Two new collector commands have been implemented: `pause' and `resume'.
    See `help collector' for details.
    o The collector enable_once command has been removed.
    o The collector store command has been extended to include experiment groups.

    Andrew is right, dbx 6.2 is very old; technically, it is supported on Solaris 10, but as you can see for yourself, there are issues to be fixed.
    Only limited support is available for this version, so if you have a support contract, please report this problem through the support channel. Better yet (and in case if you don't have support contract), upgrade to a more modern version. Since you are on Solaris 10, I'd recommend latest version of Sun Studio - 12 update 1; it is free for all uses and can be downloaded from here: http://developers.sun.com/sunstudio/downloads/.
    Should you have any questions about the upgrade, please post it here.

  • Runtime memory checking - freezes program from the start

    We'd very much like to use Forte to check a program for memory leaks. When it runs from the GUI invocation it seems to freeze up during init'ing. I discovered "bcheck", and tried it as well (See below), but once again it seems not to be talking to the proc it's intended to, and nor does the log show anything, so it seems to freeze as well.
    Any clues on how we move on from here?

  • Disp+work stop because of shared memory?

    Hello Gurus, I have an SAP server that will not start. It was running previously, but after a parameter update and an instance restart, I cannot get the dispatcher running.
    System is Windows 2012 Server, MSSQL 2008 R2, 16 Core 132 GB RAM.
    I believe it is related to shared memory overlapping somehow, but  I am not sure how to resolve or investigate. I have had issues previously with memory overlap halting SAP servers with Diagnostics Agents, but this server is not currently running any DAA. It is running SAPRouter and some SAP Web Dispatcher instances.
    I will include my trace files below:

    Hi Alwina, here is the DEV_ICM trace:
    From this trace, it appears that it is listening to 65000?
    Netstat shows that the system is listening to 127.0.0.1:65000 .
    Other SAP ports show listening on 0:0:0:0:xxxx , is ICM listening on 127 a problem?

    I heard that XML Publisher requires lot of memory for sources/features,So I want to know whether XML Publisher can be one of the cause for memory problem to occur or this shared memory is not related with XML Publisher sources at all.
    Please advice.
    Many thanks..

    Hi Robert,
    Thanks for your quick reply...
    Apps version: 11.5.10.2
    database version: 9.2.0.8.0
    As I am a beginner in this so dont know much about this.. Can you please guide me on this.
    DBAs has increased the shared memory and problem has resolved but here I am more concrened whether the XML Publisher was or can be one od the cause for shared memory problem. Is there any way to check that or this occurs randomly and we can not check this.
    Please advice something.

  • Multiple Users Accessing Shared Memory

    I created a shared memory enabled class, and it works great for a simple scenario.  But, it's currently not sufficient for my needs.  Here's an example of what I'm trying to accomplish, and the events happen in this order!
    User 1 writes data XXX to shared memory.
    User 2 writes data YYY to shared memory.
    User 1 reads from shared memory and I want him to get his data (XXX).
    User 2 reads from shared memory and I obviously want him to get his YYY.
    I do have a key I can use to differentiate my data but I don't know how to incorporate that in my process.
    Is the solution to write a table, rather than my current simple structure, to my shared memory?  But if I do this how do I clean off the "used" row after it is read?
    Or is the solution to use some sort of instance of my class and reference the appropriate instance on each read?
    Here's my write:
      data: lo_shared_area type ref to z_cl_rdn_shared_area,
            lo_root        type ref to z_cl_rdn_memory.
    ****get a pointer to the Shared Area
      lo_shared_area = z_cl_rdn_shared_area=>attach_for_write( ).
    ****Create an instance of our root
      create object lo_root area handle lo_shared_area.
    ****Set the Initial value for our message
      lo_root->set_ptwy( ps_ptwy ).
    ****Set the root back into the Area
      lo_shared_area->set_root(  lo_root ).
    ****Commit and detatch
      lo_shared_area->detach_commit( ).
    Here's my read:
      data: lo_shared_area type ref to z_cl_rdn_shared_area,
            lo_root        type ref to z_cl_rdn_memory.
      lo_shared_area = z_cl_rdn_shared_area=>attach_for_read( ).
      lo_root        = lo_shared_area->root.
      try.
          ls_ptwy = lo_root->get_ptwy( ).
        catch cx_root.
          clear ls_ptwy.
      endtry.
      lo_shared_area->detach( ).
    Thanks,
    Mike

  • No shared memory

    hi
    in BW PRD while executing a report we are getting an error
    error  message  " AN EXCEPTION WITH TYPE CX_SY_EXPORT_NO_SHARED_MEMORY  OCCURED, NO  SPACE  LEFT IN SHARED MEMORY"
    Edited by: sarat chandra bomma reddy on Apr 1, 2008 8:45 AM

    At OS level run :
    sappfpar check pf=<instance profile name>
    and correct the values mentioned in the instance profile as suggested in the error list.
    or you need to increase the Shared pool size in the DB profile.

  • Oracle Error 'ORA-27102: out of memory' - Shared memory parameters correct.

    Advice please!
    We’ve recently shut down our Oracle test server in order to increase file system capacity.  When we rebooted some of the databases wouldn’t start up.  It started the first 4 instances and then errored out saying “ORA-27102: out of memory“.
    I’m pretty sure it’s nothing to do with the file system because we actually reverted back to the old file system and the databases still wouldn’t start.  I think it’s more likely that something’s gone awry whilst the databases were actually running, and the problem has only manifested itself once we stopped and restarted them.
    I have researched the error and forud this artical and similar:  http://var-adm.blogspot.co.uk/2013/04/adjust-solaris-10-shared-memory-to.html
    Everything suggests that Oracle is trying to create a larger shared memory segment than is allowed.  The thing is, we’ve never changed our shared memory settings, and one minute it was working, the next it isn’t.  To confirm this I checked the shared memory, which is as follows:
    sswift4# prctl -n project.max-shm-memory $$
    process: 926: bash
    NAME    PRIVILEGE       VALUE    FLAG   ACTION                       RECIPIENT
    project.max-shm-memory
            privileged      7.64GB      -   deny                                 -
            system          16.0EB    max   deny                                 -
    As suggested in the above article, I checked the alert log and found the ‘WARNING: EINVAL’ message which is as follows:
    WARNING: EINVAL creating segment of size 0x000000005e002000
    Converting this to decimal, it’s trying to create something of 1.5 GB, well within the shared memory settings, which suggests that this isn’t the problem.
    We are running Oracle 10g and 11g on Solaris 10 Sparc. The error does not seem to be instance specific, we have 8 instances on this box all with SGA max of 2000m. The server has 32GB of memory available.
    Any advice would be helpful.
    Thanks in advance.
    Debs

    Thanks for your quick responses - we have now resolved the issue.
    The shared memory value was set on the command line but not saved.
    Therefore once we rebooted it lost the configuration. this has been altered by our UNIX admin and all DBs have started without issue.
    Thanks

    You have to include the account you use to execute the package in the performance counters group.

  • How do I remove a DB from shared memory in Solaris 10?

    I'm having trouble removing  an in-memory database placed in shared memory. I set SHM key and cache size, and then open an environment with flags: DB_CREATE | DB_SYSTEM_MEM | DB_INIT_MPOOL | DB_INIT_LOG | DB_INIT_LOCK | DB_INIT_TXN. I also set the flag DB_TXN_NOSYNC on the DbEnv. At the end, after closing all Db and DbEnv handles, I create a new DbEnv instance and call DbEnv::remove. That's when things get weird.
    If I have the force flag set to 0, then it throws an exception saying "DbEnv::remove: Device busy". The shared memory segments do not get removed in this case (checking with `ipcs -bom`).
    When the force flag is set to zero, the shared memory is released but the program crashes saying "Db::close: BDB0087 DB_RUNRECOVERY: Fatal error, run database recovery".
    What am I doing wrong?

    This is curious, since a simple program similar to what is described is known to work. I've modified the standard sample program examples/cxx/EnvExample.cpp C++ to use an in-memory database, DB_SYSTEM_MEM, and DB_TXN_NOSYNC. The "Device busy" symptom occurs if the close of the environment handle is bypassed. I have not been able to reproduce the DB_RUNRECOVERY error.
    How does the program's use of Berkeley DB different from what is provided in EnvExample.cpp?
    Is it possible to send me the relevant portions of it?
