Deception

Bonjour,

  • Be Careful, Found out Verizon Edge is Deceptive

The information contained in this thread is true and there is no deviation from the truth.  Has anyone else experienced this?
This letter is to notify you about a problem I am experiencing with my xxx-xxx-xxxx line, which has no come to a resolution.  Up until March 6, 2015, this line was on the Verizon Edge program, which I decided to pay off in full with an amount of $271.23.  According to the information I had available to me and communicated by the Verizon store (February 25, 2014), the following was believed to be true:
I traded in my phone (Nokia Lumia 928).
I took ownership of a Nokia Lumia Icon under the Verizon Edge program, 24 months at $22.91 a month.
Once the phone (Edge agreement) was paid at least 50%, I can trade my phone in towards a new phone.
I would be charged a $35.00 upgrade fee and the taxes for the total cost of the phone.  This would appear on my next bill.
With the Verizon Edge program I am not obligated under any contract, however if I were to cancel the line, I would be responsible for the remaining balance of the Edge agreement.
Right now I am carrying around 2 cellular phones and decided to consolidate. I took into consideration what I was told about not being obligated once the Edge agreement was paid in full.  On March 6, 2015, I decided to pay the balance off, hence allowing to remove that line of service.  After the payment was made, a new screen was available indicating that I could not upgrade my phone or end the contract until 06/13/2016.
I called Verizon Customer Service on March 6, 2015 at 2:55PM EST and spoke with Betty.  Betty looked into this further and indicated that I would receive a text within 1 hour with the new contract date.  I did not receive a text, however several hours later I checked online and the contract date changed to 11/25/2014.  I called Verizon Customer Service on March 6, 2015 at 8:30PM EST and spoke with Kerri Ann, who filed a dispute to see if the contract can be moved back.  She indicated I should hear something back within 72 hours.
After giving it more than 72 hours and not receiving any correspondence, I called Verizon Customer Service on March 10, 2015 at 12:20PM EDT and spoke with Robin to check status of the contract date.  Robin indicated that the contract date is still 11/25/2015, as I signed a contract on 11/23/2013 for a 2 year agreement.  I inquired as to how I could pay full price for my phone and still be in a contract.  I was told several times that I couldn’t be in a contract and on an Edge program at the same time. This completely confused and contradicted the situation, as I was just in an Edge program.  I explained that this was extremely deceptive, as it never showed or indicated at any time on the website I was under a contract, just the Edge agreement. I tried multiple times to understand how I could be under a contract, when I did speak to Janet of customer service on 12/9/14 at 3:40pm EST.  At that time, it was explained to me that this telephone number was out of contract either 7/2014 or 10/2014.  Robin started to get nasty with me and I immediately asked for a supervisor, which as first, she was unwilling to transfer me.  I spoke with a supervisor, Briana, who indicated I am not eligible for Edge and would need to wait until at least a few months before my contract end date.  This did not resolve my issue at all or explain what was going on with this line.
I am extremely dissatisfied with the customer service I have received so far and believe that the Verizon Edge program is deceptive in nature.  It advertises that if you pay the Edge agreement off in full, you are no longer under any obligation to keep the line.  I have attached a few screen captures showing this deception and how a consumer would be led to believe the same as I did. The second deception was that I paid tax twice on the same item.  At the point that a Verizon Edge program is initiated, on my first bill after the phone was received I had a charge for taxes for the full purchase price of the device.  At the point that I paid the Edge agreement off, I was charged tax on the remaining balance, which I believe is illegal and needs to be resolved.

To start with last year the upgrade fee was only $30, so this was not correct: "I would be charged a $35.00 upgrade fee and the taxes for the total cost of the phone.  This would appear on my next bill." Also when you go on edge there is no upgrade fee due to you paying the full retail, so you would not see this fee.
Also if you where in contract at the time of going into edge you would have been required to return your old device? Did you have to do that?
Also, When doing an early edge, you would still have to complete the currently contract before being able to upgrade no matter where you are in the edge process. *Other people on here will tell you different (rcschnoor), but you are an example of that. "the contract date is still 11/25/2015, as I signed a contract on 11/23/2013 for a 2 year agreement."* Luckily, I was advised of this by a customer service rep.
Sorry you where given wrong info. I hope you get it all figured out!

  • Mail deception - says messages are sent out but are not delivered

The Mail program appears to send my outgoing e-mail messages but does not actually do so. When I send a new message or reply to a message, Mail behaves as though the message has been sent: the spinner runs and the swoosh sound occurs when the message leaves my Outbox. The message then appears in my Sent folder. However, the mail is never received by the intended recipients. I apparently operated like this for weeks until my sister mentioned my lack of response to her e-mail a couple of weeks prior. (Honest, I really did reply.) Upon investigation I learned that others had not received messages I had sent. I then tried sending a message to myself at the same account and at my work account (different ISP) and the messages were not received.
I am using a POP account at core.com. If I access my account via the core.com webmail site, I am able to actually send messages. Getting them from the Mail program on my computer is the problem.
I noticed several other questions posted about Mail not sending messages but those queries mentioned receiving an error message or the program timed out trying to send and knowing immediately the mail was not sent. My situation seems unique in that the program is behaving deceptively - it tells me a message is sent but it is not.
I followed the steps Apple posted regarding Leopard Mail not sending messages but no success. I am using OS X5.6 on an Intel MacBook.
I have spoken with the core.com technical support staff and they assure me the problems is with the Mail program or my iMac. They are most likely correct. As an experiment I set up MS Entourage as an e-mail client for my core.com account. Entourage had no trouble sending messages to intended recipients.
I have double and triple checked the settings in Mail Preferences. The core.com technical support representative confirmed I am using the correct settings and suggested I use a different e-mail client program and forget about Apple Mail. However, I understand it is not possible to export information from Mail to a different e-mail client program so I am reluctant to make the change. The representative also suggested I remove Mail and reinstall it as a way of possibly correcting the problem. I do not want to go that route if I can avoid doing so. If that is the best approach, how do I go about saving my messages and addresses in Mail before removing Mail? Other suggestions to get Mail to behave properly?
    Thank you!

I am thinking your messages have been sent, but stopped somewhere along the path of server, perhaps even by your provider, due to some sudden lack of trust of your messages or identity.
Try sending a message only in Plain Text -- you could simply open one of your messages to your sister, click on Message in the menubar and choose Send Again. Then before sending click on Format, and choose Make Plain Text. Before sending click on Window and choose Activity. Watch the report of Activity as transmission of the message should be taking place.
Do you use a Signature, and if so, does it contain any links or HTML? Also, do this test only with a message you composed, and not one you Forwarded or a Reply.

  • I'm from Brazil and a bought a iphone in Miame. I'm happy, but after four months my device has a screen loose in the right top. I konw that Apple dosen't support my device in Brazil, but i wanr register my deception with the quality of product.

Maybe its time to change brand. Realy unhappy.

If you want to "register" any complaints with Apple, use their feedback page:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
but there is no "deception". With millions of iPhones sold, some people are going to get defective units.  Sorry this happened to you, but  no manufacturer anywhere produces all perfect devices. That's why there are warranties, and is why it's a risk to purchase any smartphone outside of your own country, since warranty for most such devices is valid only in the country of sale.
If you were looking for something other than opinions, though, then as diesel said, tell us what sort of help you would like here in these user-to-user support forums.

  • Deceptive Business Practices

I have been paying for my 86 year old mothers cell phone for years on my AT&T account.  This week she went to the AT&T Wireless store on Trindle Road in Camp Hill to get a new phone.  Instead of the store rep,  Billie H[edited for privacy – please do not post personal information], calling me for authorization as the account holder, he sold her a new pre-paid phone and accessories for several hundred dollars.  When I discovered this deceptive business practice today, I immediately called AT&T Wireless customer don't care.  The agent couldn't help me so I had to wait for over an hour to speak to a supervisor.  I then went to the store and complained to the big fat store manager who could have cared less about what happened.  So now I am going to file a formal complaint against AT&T Wireless with the PA Public Utilities Commission and the Bureau of Consumer Protection in the PA Attorney General's office.

It can all be returned within 14 days.
The sales slip should identify the sales person.
This should be brought to the attention of the manager, and a busy Saturday is a good day to do so.
My sister and I each have one of our parents phones on our account. They don't really understand the process much, but they have been good about letting us handle it.
    Sorry this happened.

  • Deception IV: The Nightmare Princess unavailable online and in-store

Is this game being released at all by Bestbuy? All of my local Bestbuys don't have the game and that game isn't available to be purchased online either. I'm confused as to how I can get this game from Bestbuy when I'm not even allowed to purchase it.

    Hello flashtitan,

Let us know what you think of the game on the "What are you playing?" thread.

  • DECEPTION is the current business model

Most of us have felt deceived at some point in our lives, and as consumers we must realize that the corporations have no interest in spending time with making us aware. That really is our job, although as busy working people, we have grown to depend on the person on the other end to help us understand what we are agreeing to. Ushering us to the point of contract signing is the objective, if we forget or otherwise have limited time to ask the right question BEFORE agreeing to things, then legally we are responsible for what we agree to. However I assert that in spirit, FAIRNESS is what we expect and disclosure is what we hope for. Where things go really wrong though is, when we ask questions and are given inaccurate and even egregiously false information. No matter if it was slack training or missed opportunities (by reps to look up answers) in the long run it's we the customer who pays for mistakes, not corporate. Gone are the days when competition controls practice, because changing carriers is no more effective at empowering us than simple complaints. Education empowers us, educating ourselves prior to signing and educating ourselves after being treated badly, these are actions that have the best chance of results. Deception by omission. Deception by distraction. And yes deception by inaccuracy are all part of our experience at times. We never see confused and frustrated customers in the ads, nor will we. Becoming cynical is our normal reaction, but it does not fix anything. ALL major corporations engage in deception, because it works !  It works often enough to make money. Once we understand why they do it, we can move on to accomplish the goals we have for our own bottom line and to serve our interests. Let's learn from (education) and properly respond to (advocacy, activism) these problems in meaningful ways that combine expression and action.

Hi, Thanks for contacting me. I'll tell you right now that if it wasn't for my daughter, I would drop verizon today and not look back. Their free phones that I tried out but did not like and sent back have cost me 65.00 a piece so far. Their customer service was terrible and I am basically done with them. I will keep them so that my daughter can enjoy her phone for now but given the opportunity I will drop them. and once this is over I will never get anything from verizon again and I will never sign up for another contract thru any carrier. I'm fed up with their lack of respect , them making up their own rules as they go along, their lack of respect and their deceptive business practices. Thanks , Vito

  • Deceptive Sales Practices

I purchased a Microsoft Surface Pro3 for my teenage son at Best Buy last August.  The salesperson sold me the Geek Squad protection plan for an additional ~$265 or so.  The total bill came to over $1700.  Naturally, my teenager was not as careful as he should have been and the screen ended up with a small crack in the corner which completely disabled the tablet within a couple of days.  He was in the middle of mid-terms.  I told him not to worry and called the Geek Squad and they assured me that it would likely be covered.  Once he was finished with mid-terms, two days, we stopped in to the Geek Squad.  This was the week before Christmas.  After waiting in line for a half hour, then about 15-20 minutes while the associate tried to locate the coverage (fortunately I had brought my receipt), he located the coverage verification.  He then told me that they would not be able to repair it, I would have to just get a replacement.  I had to stand in another line for 20 minutes, but there would not be a charge.  The next associate told me that it would be $265 or so for a new one.  When I asked why, she said the coverage would not extend to a new pc, I would have to get new coverage.  She said I could do an even exchange with no further coverage.  This was not how the salesman who sold me the tablet explained this to me.  He told me I would have 'drop' coverage.  He never said anything about having to buy new coverage once a tablet was dropped.  This is an extremely deceptive, switch and bait-like sales tactic and my husband and I will never purchase another item at Best Buy.

    Hello Catherine84,
I'm sure your son was truly grateful to have received a Surface Pro 3 from you, and felt terrible when he saw that he had caused a crack in the screen. It's comforting to find that you had a Geek Squad Protection Plan so that this wouldn't have been a costly repair or replacement at full retail value.
With that said, it sounds like the store may have provided you with a replacement of a new unit in store. Generally speaking, we replace tablets and mobile phones with refurbished units through our Geek Squad Express Replacement service, and the plan would cover the replacement. As we replaced your Surface Pro 3 with a new unit, your Geek Squad Protection Plan would be considered fulfilled, and you would need to purchase another plan for your new unit.
I apologize if this was not what you anticipated when you visited the store with your son's damaged Surface Pro 3. For more information, please feel welcome to check out the Geek Squad Protection Plan terms and conditions you would have agreed to upon purchase here.
Please let me know if you should need further assistance.

  • Reuse and recycling program deceptive?

BEWARE! I want to lodge a complaint about the Reuse and Recycling Program. There may/may not be a deceptive practice in operation that Apple and us sorry customers were not aware of. This happened to me -- I read through the condition checklist for my computer on Apple's R&R web pages and my machine had a value around $178. I decided to go ahead and shipped the MacBook to PowerOn (they actually run the program I suppose as subcontractor for Apple). PowerOn inspected my computer and said its condition was poor (and only worth $65) because the optical drive wasn't working and would not read a DL (dual-layer) disk. I don't know what DL is but I knew my computer could read and write dvd's, including the Mac OS disks without any problem. I declined their offer of $65, and they then offered $85. I rejected that also and asked for the machine to be returned, which they did. Upon return, my Mac still reads and writes cd's and dvd's with no problem. At the beginning of this R&R process there was no mention of any performance requirement beyond the norm, merely "Does its internal hardware function properly?" My equipment did and still does. No mention of DL disks. I think that is extemely unfair, and a waste of time for all parties concerned. Some people might even say it is a deceptive practice. Apple customers beware!

No commercial recycle program is ever going to give you anything near what your system is worth.  You would likely get several times what they offer selling it on your own.  The price they give you in the beginning is only an estimate.  You were of course honest in your responses, but people could just as easily say something works that doesn't.  They really can't give a final value until they inspect the machine.  "DL" means dual layer.  Reading dual layer disks is a basic disk function.  The value of the drive is greatly diminished if it can't read dual layer disks.  Most current drives with read and write dual layer, but reading dual layer has been a standard for quite a few years.  Many disks may come on dual layer media. There is an expectation that the drive should be able to read them.  They would likely need to replace the drive.  I wouldn't say there was anything deceptive.  You just need to understand how these companies work.  You'll always be much better off selling on your own.  Even for a completely dead system, you would be able to get more for just the parts.  Check out eBay to get an idea of what systems similar to yours are selling for.  If it's in good working order, you'll easily be able to sell it for more than twice what you were originally quoted.

  • Why Apple has deceptioned us with the iPad 3? ¿Porque Apple nos ha engañado con el iPad3?

Only seven months, a tablet that was the most wonderful in the world is left out of the catalog, I only found a simple reason for it, put a higher price to IPADMini, I think is better to call IPAD2Mini in order to wont be other deception after seven months too. For me simply is shameful for a premium brand that wants to be the best.  I feel totally cheated by apple. Will do Apple something to avoid this?
What do you think about it?
    Greetings to all

    Saludos..

  • Bundling of McAfee Security Scan with Reader download is deceptive

I know that there is a checkbox to select to include the security scan but I honestly believe that you have deliberately layed out the page in a way that would cause most to miss this checkbox.  I believe you are familiar with Gestalt Principles and know that people naturally deal with separate columns of text as seprate items. I believe you are taking advantage of this to maximize the number of people who unknowingly install Security Scan along with their Adobe reader.
I disagree with the idea of including the extra software by default and wish you would stop. If you insist on continuing with that, please change the download page layout to make it more clear that you are getting software you don't want along with the software you are looking for.

We're simply fellow users like yourself so can't do anything about this.
BUT, it is deceptive and if it helps, many people agree with you on this (including myself). At best, they should have the check box set as an opt-in rather than opt-out.
There are a few threads going in the forum that is geared more towards the adobe.com site at http://forums.adobe.com/community/general/adobedotcom_feedback. You can join in on any one of them. It is also more prone to being seen by someone that can make a change.

  • I am deception with Mail &the world's most advanced OS(tiger or little cat?

My Mail reject my password and I cannot sent emails. With the Panther I was the same problem. Now with the Tiger, the Mail.app was working OK, but today ocurred the same problem. Again I go to change for the Thunderbird...:( and lost my Agent and the integred system. Can somebody help me?

What information are you need? The aplication is crazy. Reject my password, and I can't sent emails. The program require that I write my pass, and again and again reject (like if the pass was wrong but is OK). Now I instaled Thundebird and everything is OK with this program, so Mail.app is crazy.
I repaired the "permisos" with Disk aplication, delete my old key, but nothing.
The same problem I haved with Panther (now I have Tiger), the Mail was working OK and an someday beging with this question.
I told with my host provider and they saw that is my application,
I told with my internet provider and they recomended change for entouraged (I hate all microsoft's program). And now I'm deception with Apple.

  • Camera Connector + NANO 8GB = deception

    Hi,
Seems I have wasted my $ on this device despite its description of supporting ANY iPOD with a color display and ver 1.1 software.
NANO = Color display & VER 1.1.2 software....
Why Apple Why? It is bad enough we have spend a small fortune on your "accessories" the least you could do is be accurate with the products you sell... so deceptive!
Needless to say the iPOD and its pricey accessories are back on the store shelf (I bought the USB power adapater as well) and $400 back in my pocket.

So what you are saying is that I need to be savy with iPod history? There is actually a product from Apple called "iPod with color display"? That is ridicules. Even if I did look at the accessory page I would still think that the Nano 8GB would be a supported iPod do to their vague and erroneous naming of their "iPod with color display" product.
I guess I will quote what is actually on the box of this product because that is what I looked at.
"Compatible with all iPod models with color display. Requires iPod software v1.1."
    http://a763.g.akamai.net/7/763/1644/v001/app.infopia.com/img/image/fp/extra/1/VP ID/2981487
So tell me again how one is supposed to determine from this that the iPod Nano 8GB with its color display and ver 1.1.2 software is not compatible?
sorry still think they are deceptive and money is still in my pocket.
Also, if Apple doesn't look in these forums, then I guess they are not interested in improving their products.

  • A deceptive practice.

It is, imho, absolutely criminal that these discs do not come with the computer when people are spending these kind of dollars to buy them.
And adds insult to injury when they say that they are not "charging" you for them...it just sosts $40 to stick them in an envelope and mail them to you.
    Absurd, ludicrous, and deceptive.
Put the blasted software on the site, then! So I can download it, and repair my nieces laptop!
    THANK YOU.

Due to licensing restrictions, the recovery software can't be posted on the site. It's included with the laptops on the hard drive on most models. As noted in the user's guide and quick start guide, you need to create backup recovery media yourself using the software that comes installed. You can usually initiate the recovery utility also by holding '0' (zero) while booting the laptop.

  • Deceptive practice to renew contract

I want to file a complaint about how you all lied to me so that I would renew my contract. I was told that I would keep my corporate discount on me verizon wireless if I went to 1 bill. This would give me a monthly discount of $10. Now I'm told that I can lose my wireless discount and my monthly bill will be what it would have been had I not renewed my contract. Now I'm stuck with you for the next 2 years with no discount. This is deception. I'm going to file a complaint with the FCC and I will be going back to Comcast as soon as this contract is up. Then I can switch back to you and get triple play for way cheap. What is wrong with this picture? I am a long time customer; even turned down deal with Comcast but apparently you don't want to keep long time customers

I’m wanting to know why BT have forced me into renewing my contract again now - well within 12 months of the previous TWO renewals? As I stated above I am staying with BT and have no problems with this, but the BT caller told me that if I did not renew for 12 months now, I’d lose BT Sport for free. He also made me accept all the usual contract rules (such as having to pay up in full if I cancel the contract etc). This is fair enough if your contract is really due to expire and really needs renewing but surely BT cannot keep forcing people to renew a 12 month contract every few months with the threat of losing a particular option or offer if you don’t renew?
    Unfortunately, that's BT's offer http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/49325/c/6401,6611,6611
The BT Sport "season" runs from August to July.  To get BT Sport on TV free for the next season, you have to agree to a new 12 month contract to run alongside the sport.
If you don't want the 12 month contract, then you have to pay the standard price.
