Defective screen on Portege M800

I bought a PORTEGE (M800-107) in 2009 and before the expiration of the 3-year-old-warranty (2012), the screen went black permanently .
I sent it to the official TOSHIBA service in Greece (called "IDEAL sa") who fixed it in about a month (and after two tries).
One and a half year later, the screen went black again. Now they ask from me 500 euros for the replacement of the monitor. Of course I'm not going to give all these money.
Portege was the 3rd Toshiba notebook I have used. I chose it because I wanted something powerful and professional. The irony is that the most expensive model went off earlier than the cheaper.
However, that was the LAST ONE from you.
PS: In order to take my notebook back (without fixing), I have to pay 30 euros, for the technicians' check!!!!!!!
Really, do you know anyone who goes to service for fun? Or am I responsible for your model's failure?

Hi
To be honest Im really wondering you have this display problem. Portege and Tecra models are the best Toshiba business line notebooks and since years they are known as high quality products with best hardware.
Anyway, sometimes the best products have problems and make troubles. Similar things happen with all technical products. I know it is pretty pity and angry, especially in the moment when you need your notebook.
Maybe it sounds stupid now but maybe you can buy display on your own and find someone who can exchange it for you. I have done this for my friend few years ago. We bought display on eBay and we have exchanged it alone. Of course on our own risk.
Bye and good luck

  • Black Screen Problem on my Toshiba Portege M800-A330

I own a Toshiba Portege M800-A330 for more than a year now.  Whenever I have problem on it, uhmm.. for example: virus, or corrupted operating system, all I do is to format my laptop or recover it using system recovery from the hard disk or using recovery disc which is inserted in the DVD drive.  But, recently I'm having a problem with my laptop.  My problem starts after I compressed the Drive C:, but I don't think that may cause the black screen problem that I'm encountering since then.
Here goes my problem: When turning on my laptop, the first thing I can see is the "TOSHIBA" logo and then after it fades it just gives me a black screen.  I don't know why it's just black screen, perhaps its system has been corrupted.  I've tried using the system recovery for the Nth times, but sadly the ability to run the system recovery from the hard disk partition also FAILED and just gives me a black screen again.  When pressing "number 0" it does not direct me to the recovery features of the notebook but instead it only put me on a black screen.  Likewise when I use the recovery disc, it also put me on a black screen upon entering in the DVD drive, and so as when I'm trying to reformat my laptop with Windows7.
I can't even access the safe mode options of my notebook.  All I can access is the CMOS/BIOS setup features of the notebook when pressing F2.
Please help, I don't know what or where the problem maybe and what could be the possible solution on this.  Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,

I dont know how can i recover the the HD partition with vista installed.. do this mean I really have to send my laptop to Toshiba service center? It will cost a lot of money, my laptop's warranty already expired.
while i understand that the outlooking symptoms may appear the same, you report that you compressed your C drive but the poster in the linked thread does not... sadly, the underlying problem may or may not be the same even though the surface symtoms appear to be so...
unfortunately, i don't know what to recommend and i feel that i must leave further answers to other support members who have better knowledge than i :?
in my own case, i've finally determined that i must purchase the reload disks from toshiba and hope that they are able to restore my machine to the original factory condition... in you case, i can't say that this is the way to go or not... it really sounds like something either BIOS or OS oriented... since the BIOS reset didn't take care of the problem, it may be something deeper (ie: video broked) or something else...
have you tried booting a *nix live CD like ubuntu? the idea here is that if a live CD of another OS boots, then there may be something wrong with your HD...
along those lines, have you tried running memtest86+ and/or a HD testing util for the drive in your unit? it is possible that memory has gone uuck or the HD may have a section of bad sectors...

  • Product support for Portege M800

    Hi all,
Recently my girlfriend gave me her TOSHIBA M800 laptop. Enlighten me pls as to why I cannot find the model M800 in Toshiba's product support tab?
The models I see there are all 805-XXXXXX.
Is 800 supposed to mean 800 series and that in fact the laptop I am having now is one of those 805-XXXXXX?
I tried to see if any of those M805-XXXXXXX match the model number I see on my laptop but none of it matches. Mine is PPM81L.
I am just trying to find out if my laptop comes with bluetooth.
    Appreciate your help on this.

    Thanks all!
I found it on the asian page.
I tried to find the manual but cannot locate it. Any kind-hearted soul can teach me how to on the bluetooth?
I read the specifications of my M800 and it states that my laptop does have bluetooth but I have no idea how to turn it on. I turned on the WIFI but I believe it is not the same, because my mobile cannot detect my lappy via bluetooth.
What I am trying to do now is to use my mobile phone as a modem and connect it to my lappy via bluetooth in order for me to surf the internet.
I am currently using windows 7 ultimate.
Any kind hearted soul knows how to do it and is willing to teach me?
Appreciate any kind of help because I am a computer idiot. Thanks.

  • Portege M800 - System hangs after fingerprint login

I just got my Portege M800 weeks ago and frankly speaking, this model has been giving me much trouble. Earlier it is the heat problem at the palm rest and there is no solution to it.
Now I am facing another issue with the fingerprint login. I am running on WinXP. I set the system to be locked after 5 minutes idle. So normally after 5 minutes idle, the system will require me to scan my fingerprint to unlock the Windows. But there are times that, after scanning my fingerprint and successfully matched, the screen will just be blank (only showing the desktop wallpaper). No desktop icons, no windows task bar and nothing. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del bring up nothing and no response even any key press. I tried to bring the system to hibernate by press the power button once also bring no response.
So I finally have to press and hold the power button to hard-reset the laptop.
Anybody can help or give any clue what was happening? Thanks!

I found the Fingerprint software on the Toshiba European driver page.
At this time you can find a 7.10.1.2 version for Vista 32bit and Win XP
    Check this!

  • Re: Portege M800 - can't get bluetooth installed in Windows 7

Hi, I have a portege M800 PPM81C-07602D. It came with windows vista but I have reinstalled it to windows 7, and now I can't get the bluetooth drivers to install. I've tried the old vista drivers as well as the newer windows 7 drivers, but whenever I run the install I get the message "Please plug in the bluetooth device and click ok button."....If I click ok it just pops up again. I don't know why it wouldn't be finding the internal bluetooth....I dont think there's a physical on/off switch for the BT anywhere, and I looked to see if it had been disabled in the bios but there was nothing in there about it...so...I'm out of ideas.
Anyone have any thoughts I can try?
    Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Toshiba Bluetooth stack can be installed if the BT module is enabled properly so use FN+F8 key combination to enable BT module.
After doing this BT should be recognized and installed properly (you will se BT entries in device manager).

  • Portege M800 - Can't recover Vista

    Hy Guys!
Here is my Problem, or even a problem of a friend of mine...
My friend today bought a Toshiba Portege M800-116 - Model Nr.: PPM81E
She turned it on and forgot to plug it in, so during the installation of Vista it shut down and because she is a total noob on computer she took her recovery disk and installed XP. So the recovery image which should be on the HDD is gone...
Now i tried to install a Vista Ultimate x64 but i got a lot of problems with the drivers and i couldn't slove it yet. For example the display driver won't work and some others too. But i don't want her to use XP because it only can use 3 GB of RAM and she's got 4 GB...
So maybe u guys can help me? I don't know what to do. I try to find some solutions for my driver problems, but a recovery file for Vista also would be nice... Its Vista Buissnes which should have been installed. :)
I am from Austria if this matters. ;)
Greetings and thanks for your help.

Look at [www.isd.toshiba.com.au] and you will find 64bit drivers.
On the website go to Support => Download centre, enter your model and you find all drivers for your Notebook

  • Portege M800-107: Power Management & HDD Protection Utility questions!

    Hi all,
I own a Toshiba Portege M800-107, I have recently installed windows 7 (ultimate edition), which enhanced my laptop capabilities. The only problems I face are:
    1) The Power Management utility, where I have install the required drivers from the official page of Toshiba, the problem is that the Value Added package is installed without the power management. For now I over come the problem by using the power options offered by Windows 7.
    2) The most important problem is the HDD Protection Utility which every time I try to install the driver from the official site, it stops the installation with the reason that this "hardware is not supported by this computer"
Apart those problems the laptop is working perfectly and faster.
If any one could assist me with my problems I would be very appreciated.

    > 1) The Power Management utility, where I have install the required drivers from the official page of Toshiba, the problem is that the Value Added package is installed without the power management. For now I over come the problem by using the power options offered by Windows 7.
There is no special Power Saver tool for Win 7. The Value added package provides some additional options which you can find in Win 7/Vista power management.
    Check this HowTo:
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/ann.jspa?annID=41
    > 2) The most important problem is the HDD Protection Utility which every time I try to install the driver from the official site, it stops the installation with the reason that this "hardware is not supported by this computer"
The HDD Protection Utility using the acceleration sensor built in the computer.
The point is that there are different M800 on the market and possibly your M800 does not support the acceleration sensor. This could be the reason why you cannot install this tool.

  • Portege M800 - Exposed Sensitive Touchkeys does not work

I am owner of the Toshiba Portege M800-105. Everything does its work. After 2 month working on it, my exposed sensitive touchkeys next to the POWER-Button does not work. After I deinstalled the "Vista-Value-Added-Package" everything is working proper. Why? Now my FN-Keys are not working or are diabled. Why?
Before deinstallation the package, the first button next to the power-button had the function to turn off the backlight from the Logo, from the senitive touchkeys an from my touchpad. NOW it turn off the sound!!!! Fairy weired if you aks me. How can I fix my buttons up to factory settings and get FN-Buttons working?
I reinstalled the value added package again, and have the save problem as before: the first two buttons next to the power button does not work!
Unter the Application: Thoshiba Button Support, for the first two buttons there are no Keynames depositd/marked so that I can change there configuration.
FN-Keys works after installation the package, though not the sensitive keys! Please, who can help me?
The Value Added Package has small programs. One of them is the Toshiba Button Support. Whenn I deinstall it everything works. When I install it, nothing works.

    Hello guys
The whole thing is really strange. I really dont know what happen on your notebooks. The fact is that those buttons are controlled by software. If I am remembering well it called Button support or Button control and it is part of Value Added Package.
VAP contains several different tools and utilities. When you remove VAP it will be removed the application responsible for FN functionality (Flashcards) and this is the reason why the FN doesnt work anymore.
So, theoretically everything should be OK when you install VAP again. I repeat theoretically. Why you still have this problem I dont know and I dont believe nobody can say for sure. Maybe some registry entries are corrupted now? Who knows?
I presume you dont want to use most radical solution and make clean OS installation again but this can definitely help. With clean preinstalled OS (factory settings) everything will work well again.
At the end I must say that I use Satellite U400 (similar to your Portege) almost 6 months now and all buttons work properly. I still use preinstalled Vista version and I didnt made any changes. It works well.

  • How to tell if the nano has a defective screen...

Ok, earlier today I had my iPod nano in my pocket with NOTHING EXCEPT THE IPOD NANO IN IT (not even headphones!). The iPod nano was in the iSee nano case and also had the decal girl crystal shield under it. I was wearing my favourite pants. They are very baggy and have huge pockets. Anyway, I was walking with the nano in my pocket for about 1 minute, and I didn't sit down. I pulled it out, and what do you know? The screen is cracked. A yucky blacky thing was in the bottom right hand corner. It looked like spilled ink (as another poster said a while ago). I turned the nano on, and the blacky thingy grew a bit and turned pixalized. The top of the screen just had a blue bar. The bottom of the screen showed a lighter blue bar. I could barely make out the menu items "Settings" and "Shuffle songs" through the bar. The total right hand side of the screen is either white of covered with the blob.
Here are some pictures. Note that the scratches are not on the nano, but they are actually on the iSee.

I contacted apple and they said that they were going to send me a box within 2 days to my house. I put the nano in and then they will decide whether to fix it or not. What I want to know is how can I tell if I really do have a defective screen? I've heard that if your screen cracks from the inside, then it is defective. If you drop your nano/put your car keys next to it and it cracks, it is your fault.
I think I have a defective one. The case itself emerged unharmed, with no new scratches (I still have yet to figure out how so many scratches could collect on the iSee nano case in little over a week). There is no dent in the case, because I didn't actually hit anything. I think my nano must be defective. According to apple's website, my nano's approximate date of purchase was October 18.
The thin clear layer of whatever it is that covers the nano screen is not cracked. Some part of the nano is cracked though. I think it is defective. How else could it crack without harming the case or the thin invisible layer or whatever without me dropping it.
Judging from this, can you tell me if it is faulty, or if it isn't faulty?

That is so stupid. Any additional pressure......
I can't believe this. When I first got the nano, I thought my only problem would be scratching, so it's been paired with a case and a screen protector since I got it. I never thought cracking would be a problem.
And why did they have to make it so thin anyways? Screw the 1GB nano, make a nano around the .33 inches thickness of a shuffle. The nano will now not crack or scratch, and I will have nothing to complain about.
I know that during the first 14 days from the date of purchase, you can get a refund on your nano. If I do get a new nano back, will I be able to get a refund, or not? The original iPod (the cracked one next to my computer) was engraved with my name. On the online form I asked apple not to engrave it, to speed up the process. My warranty will not restart, but will my date of purchse? I really want to refund this nano and forget about it. Screw the screen protectors and cases. I'll give them to my cousin. Her nano is scratched like ****.

  • Brand New Mac Book Pro with defective screen

    Hi Guys,
Does anyone here, purchased a brand new Mac Book Pro 13-inch: 2.9GHz with a defective screen?
I bought mine, Last June 14. I just noticed the defect last June 29 and returned it to where I purchase it at june 30.
There are somewhat 'black smudges' on the left part of the screen. I'm a graphic designer, so i know that this is a big issue for me.
Also, the fact that I'm just using it for 5 times I think, since I bought it, and there's already an issue.
At first, i was battling with the customer service (from where i bought it), They wouldn't want to give me replacement, because I already exceeded their 7 day return policy. But I'm not giving in, so then they just told me, they would send it to apple service.
It took a week for a progress, then I just got a call from Apple, that they didn't saw it either (the defect). Then I told the guy what I saw.
It's only visible with black background and with the lights turned off.
So he called again and told me that he also saw it, and told me that they would replace the Monitor.
I'm new with this, is it normally ok, that they will just replace the monitor? I mean, would it still work properly, now that they've
opened it and replaced only the defective part?
Hope you guys can give me your thoughts.
    Thank You.

Not sure what part of the world you are in but Apple has a 14 day return policy. But even with the 14 days you exceeded that time limit. So the only option is to replace the defective part and not the whole system. This is standard operating practices for any manufacturer once you have exceeded the return period.

  • Xperia Z3 Defective screens?

Hello, i purchased Xperia Z3 from local retailer about a week ago and i had to change that unit to new one on next day because of defective screen. I think it is a manufacturing fault, because i noticed this orange lightspot right on bottom of the screen and there was also strange horisontal lines on that screen. These same problems occured also in the next replacement (patch: 15w16) and third replacement (patch: 15w18). So, now i am waiting for my 4th xperia z3 from same retailer, because of that orange spot and those weird lines were in all three previous devices i received. I am really dissapointed, because it seems that even if i get a new one, it has the same manufacturing faults on the screen, which is furstating and extremely strange. I know that those orange spots and horizontal lines are far from normal, because I had a perfect day one xperia z3, before i accidentialy dropped it and mashed it's screen, before that, there wasn't any strange spots/lightbleeds and everything was just fine. I really don't understand that how it's even possible to have exactly same defects on three xperias on the row? I really hope that this 4th xperia i receive from retailer is just perfect as it should be, if it isn't, i will demand my money back. I just would like to ask that is there any possibility that those defects could be on software? Or is it about defective charger that makes damage to all units? Does anyone else have these problems on their phones or am I really the only one with extremely bad luck?
    Edited due to foul language

My Z3 is still on 23.0.A.2.93, I guess this version .105 isn't available for D6653 yet.
Is there a change log for .105?

  • Re: Portege M800: WebCam driver doesn't support internal microphone on 64bit OS

    Hi All!
I have the problem that the internal microphone of the webcam (Chicony) is not working in 64 bit systems (Vista or Windows7).
Has someone a fix for that?
    Best regards,
    Sven

I had what sounds like exactly the same problem and seem to have solved it. You may have tried this already but here's how I got my internal mic working for my Portege M800 on a 64bit OS:
    -I went to (http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp?service=EU)
-I downloaded the latest audio/sound driver and installed it.
-Then I went back to (http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp?service=EU)
-I then downloaded the latest webcam driver and installed it.
    - I restarted my computer and it worked perfectly. Upon opening Skype, the program automatically noticed a "new" microphone.
Hopefully this is of some help to you.
    Good luck with it.

  • Portege M800-105 - HDMI output driver for XP?

I've got a question wich belongs to the HDMI output.
I have put Windows XP Home on my Portege with all driver from the Toshiba support page but my HDMI out does not works.
Now I've seen that there is a driver for Windows Vista called Toshiba HDMI Output.
Does anybody knows a driver called like this for Windows XP?

  • Manufacture defected screen

How many others have had their nano screen defect?
I was given a 4 GB Nano white for this chistmas and found in a single day it had easily recieved scratches over the screen by merely handling it while adding songs. Just today I reached into my pocket to find the screen internally busted. I had nothing else in my front pocket neither and had only went walking. I was dumbfounded to see the screen in its condition. I have had the lcd break on one of my cell phones but that was after a bad spill and could accept that. My nano on the other hand was in a protective case i bought for it that has a plastic cover for the screen and surrounding padding to prevent it from scratching further. Now I am no stranger to ipods and know that they are electronic pieces of genius that need care. I have owned an ipod mini 4GB as well as currently also own a 20 GB 4th generation ipod. They have seen their share of abuse (mind you neither had a case) and yet they are in better shape then the 4GB Nano. I am quite unhappy I assure you. I hope to take it back to the store where it was purchased and see if this situation could be resolved but at the present moment I felt a need to let others know of a "common" problem that I too encountered. (I had not known that Nanos were reported scratching easily or lcds breaking till I surfed the web after my own problem occured)

i simply posted my message to show i too have had an issue.

  • Retina Macbook Pro - Defective Screen (white pressure mark)

After waiting 3-4 weeks I was so excited to finally receive my retina macbook pro today. To my dissapointment as soon as I turned it on this glaring white light/cloudy mark behind the screen stabbed me in the heart. So dissapointing to wait so long just to get a defective unit.
I called AppleCare and they said I could either ship it back for a refund, or I could take it into the apple store for a refund. Apple store is only 30 minutes away so instead of putting any trust in fedex I decided to just go return it in person.
So now I'm waiting up to five days for the money to be refunded so I can order again and wait ANOTHER 3-4 weeks to receive a unit because I upgraded the base model to 16GB of ram, and it may have the same exact problem when it arrives... who even know...
I saw on macrumors a few others have had this issue so I'm not alone, but I do hate that I was unlucky this time around.
Here is what it looked like:
    http://i.imgur.com/AimHC.jpg
    http://i.imgur.com/zUFkW.jpg
    Anyone else this unlucky?

I've experienced this. I think they're called muras but I'm not certain. They weren't there when I bought the mid-2012 15" Retina MacBook Pro, they developed months later. First one, then two. I brought it in to the Genius Bar and they say both muras and replaced my display. The replacement display I got was horribly yellow tinted and muddy looking whereas my first display with the muras had brilliant colours and sharp text. Apple considers a consistently-yellow tinted display normal and refuses to replace it. The Spyder4Elite colour calibrator can reduce the yellowing but does nothing to help the muddy colour quality and blurriness.
