"Degraded Video Playback" message on top of the line MacBook Pro.

I am using iMovie '09, under Snow Leopard, to import video from a Canon HV20. If I select full quality I get the message "selecting full on this computer may result in degraded video playback"
What's that about??? The processor is the 2.93 Core 2 Duo with 4 gigs of ram. The problem can't be the specs of the machine, so what is it complaining about, and what do I need to do to fix it?
Thanks,
Loren

1920x1080 takes more processing power and disk space than 960x540.
However, you can probably ignore this message. A MacBook Pro is a powerful machine. Only if you notice a problem should you worry.
Unless you are burning BluRay, (or other similar formats), there is no current benefit of importing in 1920x1080.
I do it anyway, because I think in the future, it will give me more options.

  • Top of the line MacBook Pro 15" Retina with 2 27" thunderbolt displays or top of the line 27" iMac with another 27" display?

I don't know which combination to get... The key is two have dual monitors. I'm a photographer and need the extra workspace. Would there be a noticeable difference in performance? Please help.

I agree with shldr - do you need the portability? A lot - and I mean a lot - of photographers are taking their MBPs with them on location shoots. If you're in a studio all the time, then the iMac should suit you fine. If you shoot on location and need portability then the MBP with two 27" ATDs would be my choice. If, like most photogs, your shooting is both, go with the MBP.
In the end, portability is your only concern. As an ex-pro, if I were buying a computer today, I would not get the Retina display MacBook Pro - I would get the fastest non-Retina and upgrade myself to 16GB of RAM and at least a 512GB SSD (although OWC has a 960GB SSD that looks awfully nice and the price keeps dropping).
So location or studio or both? If location or mixed, MBP. If studio only, iMac.
    Pretty simple decision...

  • Online video playback is severally laggy/choppy on my macbook pro 2011?

hey guys, got a bit of an issue here. I've been noticing some SEVERE lagging issues whilst viewing online (streaming) video, from various sites, including, novamov, youtube, and others. the videos rarely stop to buffer as i have a fast connection, but yet they still seem to lag wildly. what i mean by this, is the sound will continue as normal, the the picture will freeze sometimes for a good 5 seconds or so before resuming, this is happening increasingly more and more..
i am running Mac OSX Lion (latest Update) on my:
    MacBook Pro
    17-inch, Early 2011
Processor 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB
    Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50b)
If it helps my hard drive space is:
    Macintosh HD
    Capacity: 664 GB
    Available: 179.79 GB
The browser i am using is the latest version of Safari, although i have tried firefox and chrome and i experience the same issue.
I have Sophos anti-virus installed and run regular scans on my system (all clear)
i really can't think of anything else which could be causing an issue here. I haven't installed any additional software for a while, not in the time frame since the error started to occur.
I am quite surprised to be experiencing such issues as lagging on something as simple as a youtube video when my £3000+ computer handles heavy applications such as Final cut pro and Photoshop with ease...
i MUST be missing something here,
I really would appreciate any help i can get here.
thankyou very much for your time

    Hey Carolyn,
Worked a treat, de-jaggy video for first time in months!!! Only point of clarification, I manually deleted the Flash plug-in before I uninstalled Flash. Don't know if this was why it worked for me rather than others but hey ...
    Thanks again!

    Hi Ben...
I am quite surprised to be experiencing such issues as lagging on something as simple as a youtube video
Try troubleshooting the Flash plugin required for most YouTube video.
Quit all open browsers. I'm using Safari as a test.
Open System Preferences > Flash Player then select the Storage tab. Click: Delete All
Now uninstall the Flash plugin then reinstall new >  Troubleshoot Flash Player | Mac OS
Make sure and uninstall the current plugin first.
Then launch Safari. From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Empty Cache
    Now try a video.
BTW... if you have the ClickToFlash extension installed, that can prevent Flash based video from streaming. It can also be installed as a plugin in /Library/Internet-Plug-Ins.
And check to see if Safari is running in 32 bit mode. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info. If the box next to:  Open in 32 bit mode  is selected, deselect, quit then relaunch Safari.

No it's not normal. What version of iPhoto?  Post the first 50 lines only of the crash report

  • I am set to send my top of the line HP pc in for repair

i am set to send my top of the line HP pc in for repair . im very pleased with HP as useual . i bought my HP AMD FX(tm)-8150 Eight-Core Processor with 8 gig ram 1 gig video card and all the good stuff over 1 year ago . i had blue screen problems from the begining . and i suspected it was a hareware issue and HP service was thinkoing it was software . so i was stuck with a top of the line pc with problems that could not be solved . but i didnt quit on HP  i know they would help if i could just prove my solution was in fact hardware ., so months went buy and as hardware goes it can stay hiden for long and the problem got biger . so now i have the isues being adressed by way of FED EX and the HP factory . at zero cost to me ofcourse . the thing is that i buy HP pc BECAUSE OF THE QUALITY AND SERVICE . yes i can build my own pc for less cost . i have done it befor . but the extra cost for a HP qulity seviced pc is a diference of about $300.00 . insted of building my own with all the same parts i got now i could have built the same thing . but it would not be the same at all . no 24 hour on line service . no free shipping and repairs . no consant kowlage of the latest driver and products . at to top it of i also bought anougher 3 year exstended warenty service for $150.00 . so i got 4 years of service coming to me still that will garenteed me a great pc that sill works like a top of the line product should . garenteed . yeah we you got to understand a bit about building your own pc . it would have given me 10 companys to call for hahaha service , thats a joke . the 10 companys i wpould have had to buy a part from each one and not one company is going to garentee anything of anoughter product . so with HP it one call to one company that garentees you a service under understandable rules . so i just got maybe $75.00 of my warenty paid for just in free FED EX shiping both ways . so if you add it up and i have bough crudy pc parts befor and there is no help like HP to save me . so yeah i didnt get the best pc day one but what could we do till we could understand the problem . so i just think my day has come 5that all my money that i cant AFORD IS GOING TO GET ITS VALUE FROM HP . thats what i payed for and a home build pc is not what it adds up to realy be in the catolog . so i ant going quit till i see my HP pc back in 2 weeks and its going to work great or why would they fix it . it was just a isues we had wether it was software (windows) or hard ware . they could not fix a hard ware problem so i was screewed if i didnt quit thinking HP  and me had toi get a solution and it can at last . i dont know how i new it was hardware . i built many pc befor just with junk parts and it was the same kinda thing is all i can tell ya . blue screen for all my exsperence has always been a hardware isues so i got the facts now my 1 gig  video card is now showing the hardware problem so im glad i was right . im like being a dumb fool believeing in trust and honor and they had a righouse point that if windows was doing it they couldnt be held responcable and i would have been stuck . but i got my service and quality i payed for thats all i got to say . so i tell you i do laughf at people with priter problem i must  say that my exsperence with printers is to just buy a new one every time it brecks i would not call HP for a printer glich . printers are crap that only last so long so . i buy a new one about once a year but its because they are so cheep that it would cost more  in postage then the thing is worth fixing . but i dont kid around about my $1,397.00 HP pc thats not crap at all and it worth every penny . and i know HP ant dummys if they got a error in the pc deartment there going to fix it or they are going to sell anything to make there launch money . thats what i think any way . so my faith is in the repair department for now and my pc never did couse much if a big problem . i been useing it everyday . it would just shut down on me every so often . but it did bug me to spend that much money i dont have for a glich in a pc i love . so i just say . boy i hope they fix it good and not just the video card error but the root of the whole problem . so it will all go away . i hope i do . thank you HP  and thank to all that suport a fine quality product and service that HP provides . im gonna go play my facebook game now . bye bye .

There are quite a lot of possible things that are going on. Can you let us know
    1. What system you have (e.g. Windows 7, Mac OS Mavericks)?
    2. What version of Acrobat or Adobe Reader you have?
    3. WHO gets the message about a password (you or the receiver, or both)?
    4. What is the full text of the message, if you get it?
    5. If the receiver gets it, what security do you set on the file?

  • Should I buy the top-of-the-line 15" MBP or the Baseline 15" model (isa)

Now, I'm looking to buy a new 15" MBP when Mac OS X Lion comes out (isa). But my problem is should i buy the top-of-the-line model or the Baseline Model (isa).
So, I'm also waiting for the MBP with the new design maybe 2013 model (isa) so let's say the MBP is going to stay with me for 1 and a half years or two years(isa). I also have to tell you that I'm NOT THAT MUCH OF A GAMER, so tell me guys, with all the info that I've given you. which one do you recommend. O, btw, this is my FIRST Mac (isa).Plus, I'm also planning to upgrade the screen resolution to 1680 by 1050 resolution and the HDD to 500GB@7200RPM (isa)

It really depends on how your going to use it. For general usage, the baseline 15" model will be fine. The major difference between the baseline and top of the line model is the graphics card. Since you don't do much gaming, the improved graphics the top of the line model offers won't really effect you and the graphics card included in the baseline model is plenty fast any way. The faster processor clock speed offered by the top of the line model will offer a negligible performance improvement in day to day use too, only really benefiting you in more advanced tasks like video editing.
Finally, since you only plan to keep the MBP for 1 & 1/2 years, there's really not much point in spending large amounts of money on upgrades when you plan to replace the system soon.
Overall, in your case, there isn't much point in getting the top of the line model since you don't need the extra graphics performance unless your doing high end video editing, photo editing or gaming (which you say your not). Stick with the baseline model.

Gave up on the GUI.  This script derived from http://blog.netnerds.net/2012/07/os-x-how-to-setup-nat-on-lion-and-mountain-lion / seems to work for me:

How can I sync my iPad 2 with my new MacBook Pro when it is already synced with my old MacBook? I am getting a message on the new MacBook Pro that says I am not allowed to sync the iPad 2 because it is synced to another iTunes library.

    1) ensure iTunes is authorized for your iTunes store account(s)
    2) connect your device and right-click or control-click it in the iTunes Source list, then choose transfer purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.
    3) sync the device
iTunes will wipe the iPad but, since you transferred your purchases in the previous step, your content will be in your library and you can re-populate the iPad with it.
above works for purchases from the iTunes store. for everything else, check out this post by Zevoneer.
also, there are PhoneView and iRip.

I know many have this issue but i can't find a solution to the problem. i get message saying insuffisiant disk space in the volume iPhoto library and i have plenty of space available. i have the new macbook pro with retina display. i have never seen this message before and i have 2 other macbooks and have had many other also. i am assuming this is a problem with the new macbook retina. does anyone know the exact fix to this issue? i have seen many sugestions to try to fix this issue but none have solved the issue for anyone that i can find in the Apple Support Community. thank for looking into this in advance.
    ******A true apple fan********

Actually your suggestions are the ones that i have tried. i have seen that you have tried to help others with this issue and the only one that i could find that said they found the problem said that it was an ilife update issue and it fixed it and i have no available updates. i know it has to do with something in photo stream because it happens when i create a new library and it is loading the photos but i get the message before i reach the maximum 1000 photos. so i've tried updating, new library(first backing up photos and then deleting them from iPhoto), reinstalling OSX many times, running disc utilities. I called Apple the first day i had this issue and i was the first person to call them for support with the retina display and i actually had it escalated to a senior advisor and we thought we fixed the problem but we did not. i am pretty fluent in dealing with troubleshooting these type of issues and this is the first time i'm reaching out to the community. i figured now that the retina has been out some time now that there would be an obvious answer to this issue. thanks for the quick reply.

  • What configuration of the new macbook pro do I need to run FCS 3 without choppy playback.

Yep, just wondering what configuration of the new macbook pro do I need to run FCS 3 without choppy playback or lagging.  I'm thinking about the 7200rpm, 2.2ghz, antiglare, 4gb ram, with 1gb GPU graphics card configuration

Nothing wrong with the computer. Playback is dependent on the media and the drives.

  • I have a 6 month old top of the line iPad 4 I can't figure out. IN ANY WAY!

Today I get in my emal something about refunds for people whose children have charges up apps to my account with iTunes. Well I can't even find WHERE on my iPAD I have the icon FOR iTUNES!  I see people show it as a blue symbol with notes and it says iTunes.  My iPad does NOT have that. YET when I try to go download it from the iTunes store it says that iTUNES came with my iPAD so where is it??
There is a RED emblum with a double note but it says MUSIC!   Is that the same thing as the iTunes?
What is the task manager? And where you do find that?
I get no answers on anything as to how to work this thing and it is extremely upsetting.  I paid $1,200 for this iPad and my husband paid the same amount and got a REALLY NICE DELL and I have this thing I can't even use! Then on top of it when you write something like this you get an email from the Apple/ Mac people saying they took your post off because it was not positive enough for them - so how do you find out anything?

islandantoinette here is a copy of Apple's email (click the image below to enlarge it):
The operative words are "Check your email for iTunes receipts or use a computer to sign in to your iTunes account ..."
I trust that answers that question.
    What is the task manager?
An iPad has no such thing. It has no Start button either. You can draw no comparison to a Windows PC because an iPad isn't a Windows PC; it's an entirely different category of product. It's like comparing a microwave oven to a barbecue grill - they both cook stuff, but that's where the comparisons end. If you want a Windows PC there are plenty of cheap things from which to choose for which you must tolerate ctrl-alt-del when you log in every time, among other indignities. PCs have had well over a quarter century of refinement, so you'll know what to expect.
I have seen everyone from nonagenarians to two - year olds pick up an iPad and use it in seconds. Literally. I can't say the same about any PC. Both iOS devices as well as Macs also incorporate a robust range of accessibility options to accommodate people with limited sight, hearing, or other challenges both physical and mental. I understand your frustration with learning to use a radically new and different device, but it seems to me anyone in your circumstance given a PC for the first time would be facing a practically insurmountable challenge. Besides, wouldn't be worth the effort since the popularity of PCs is diminishing rapidly in the face of iOS devices the market clearly prefers.
I'm still trying to understand how it was possible to spend $1200 on a top of the line iPad whose suggested retail price could not have exceeded $929. If you purchased AppleCare+ that would add $99. Sales taxes would have had to be 17% for your total purchase price to be $1200. Is that correct?
The reason for asking is that if you purchased AppleCare, complimentary customer support regarding any subject is extended beyond the initial 90 days for the duration of the AppleCare agreement. You can call AppleCare and discuss any iPad-related subject with them at length, at no additional cost. You will find Apple's representatives incredibly patient and will work with you for as long as possible, weeks or months if necessary, to resolve any question you may have with your iPad. No other company on Earth can come close to the quality of support that Apple offers its customers.
The point is that you have many, many support options from which to choose. All you have to do is avail yourself of them.
    Good luck.

This looks like the final logo was created with several layers probably in Illustrator, then the file was most likely imported into After Effects and revealed by animating mask paths.

If the monitor can be detected your Displays preferences should show it in its Arrangement panel.  You may have to play around with your Display panel to get the desired resolution.  And also may have to click detect displays and gather windows to see both sets of preferences on your main screen.

I am looking for information on iPad and iPhone apps and Mac software that are "top of the line" for academic research. The most current and comprehensive information I have found is dated July 2010.

    PogoPossum,
My area of interest is in business and economic history. There is a considerable amount of reading and charting. Until the iPad hit the streets, I only considered stacks of books, journals, and downloaded documents, all marked up with highlighters, underlines, and marginal notes.
Most of my PC based work involved MS Office, Endnote, and MS OneNote.
What I would like to do with the iPad and MacBook are the same things (Office, Endnote, OneNote) and add the ability to read and markup all forms of printed materials from books to pdf to webpages.
I cut my teeth on an iPod Touch and have tried a lot of the note taking and reading apps. Without a camera the standard iPod Notes works for short quick notes and long think pieces. I just emailed the content and downloaded the stuff to my PC. Obviously, I do not want to continue at this "non-integrated" level of work.
    Does this help?
