Design practices from the CLD Exam Prep Guide

I have a question about design practices as stated in the CLD Exam Prep Guide found at   http://ftp.ni.com/evaluation/certification/cld/cld_exam_prep_guide_english.pdf
    Please refer to statements
2.e.1. Set the value or attributes of a control, statically using the property dialog box of an object, or dynamically using Property Nodes.
2.e.2. Initialize or set control values at application, load, start, and stop.
4.a.4. Use local variables to update controls.
Because the words initialize and set and update all mean to change the value and two different methods are suggested to do so, I first saw this as contradictory.  Assuming there is no contradiction, it should be very clear when, where, and why each method is used.
From section 2.e I understand this to mean you should change (set) a control value at application, load, start, and stop by using Property Nodes.  Thus, application, load, start, and stop shall be clearly identified within your block diagram to avoid misunderstanding.
From section 4.a I understand this to mean you should change (update - as you might do repeatedly within a while loop) a control value by using local variables everywhere else in your block diagram.  If I understand this correctly, there is no contradiction.  Otherwise....

Scott,
Thank you for drawing my attention to this thread.  I understand your confussion but, there is no contradiction.  I will attempt to clairify the statements.
Section 2 addresses design of the GUI or, how to set up the user experience.  Several questions any developer needs to ask are:
Is the data represented correctly? (what data type is needed?)
How will the user change this data? (Enum / Ring / Combo box pull-down, maybe the increment / decrement buttons, Perhaps direct text entry from the keyboard? If so do we wish to update value while typing or end text entry with "Enter"?)
How can I make it "Pretty?"  (What colors are approachable, how can I present logical groupings of the data the user needs....?)
Section 2 is all about the user.  Your application will be used by users and, they need to interact with your product.  Design the interface correctly and they will never notice, design it poorly and they will wish to break you nose because the software just does not "FEEL" right.
Section 4 addresses Programing practices.
Avoid Localitis
Avoid sequenceitis
don't ABUSE Globals
use common design patterns
Basically "Write Software" not "Functional spaghetti code"
Writting "Good Software" in LabVIEW is one of the things that CAN BE DONE with LabVIEW.  Unfortunatly, because LabVIEW is often approached by people with no understanding of Software Engineering principals, many LabVIEW applications fall into the "Functional Code" bucket and are poor "Software".
The CLD exam will require you to domenstrate that you can apply software engineering principals in the LabVIEW IDE.
Good Luck-  Sling some wires!

    Hello,
I want to do the "web service" example from the 2-Day-Developer Guide.
I give the application my proxy server address in the format address:port and go through the assistant creating the web service. After selecting the IBM UDDI-service and searching for %xMethods% as business name I get the following error:

    What have I done wrong?

Please.. Could you change your forum handle to something more human, we are a friendly group here and lik to know who we are talking to.. Secondly, WHy are you using such an OLD version oft he product. You would be better off installing 3.2.1 (latest released build) and asking your questions after you do that..
(I am sorry, it's like asking for help in a Windows support forum about issues you are having with Windows 3.1)

  • Will I lose points on the CLD Exam if I use a Launcher vi in addition to the provided Front Panel?

    Hi!
In this thread: https://decibel.ni.com/content/message/50512#50512, MattP directed me to this Certification Board.
If I use the Actor Framework in a CLD exam, will I lose points for launching the Front Panel? For two specific examples of what I mean, please refer to the solutions submitted here:
    ATM: http://forums.ni.com/t5/Certification/Sample-Exam-Solutions-for-Review/m-p/2380868#M728

    Thanks!
    Solved!

    Hi,
You will not loose points for using the launcher, and not documenting the message classes.  The folder structure is also fine.
Do document the other VI's, actors, and SubVI's.   Remember be brief with documentation.

  • Can I download and install Creative Suite 6 Design Standard from the Adobe site?

I purchased cs6 standard when I bought my laptop so I have the hard copy of the program. However, my laptop does not have a disc drive so I was looking to download the file online then enter my product code and serial number. Am I missing something or is there no way to download and install online?  Sorry if this is a redundant post, I couldnt find one that addressed my problem.
In short, can I download and install CS6 Standard from the Adobe site (not the trial version)? If yes, can someone post a link to direct me to it?

Simply download the trial and activate it with the serial. Or you could copy the files to an USB stick on another computer. There is no super-secret extra download.

  • How to copy and paste web design styles from the web

I am not doing so well with the web style templates provided in the latest versions of IWeb.
Is there a way to copy and paste the html code from some site who's design I like then paste it into my Iweb and then put in my content to the style that was up?
I used to be able to do do this about 10 years ago with a Claris Homepage program, don't see how to do it with IWeb.
It's like I have to do everything from scratch, draw background boxes, don't see frames.
    Thanks everyone..
    Jack E.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. No you can't copy the code form a site and use it in an iWeb page. To use frames you would use an HTML snippet and this code:
<IFRAME SRC = "URL OF PAGE YOU WANT TO FRAME" WIDTH="XXXpx" HEIGHT="XXpx" FRAMEBORDER="0" --if "0" no border, otherwise "1" with border MARGINWIDTH ="0px" MARGINHEIGHT="0px" SCROLLING="no" --"no" no scrolling bar, "yes" show always, "auto" showed when need > Your browser does not support IFRAME </IFRAME>
You can get more info at this site:iFrame code.
I've creates a demo site which describes many of the features and tricks I've learned from this forum. This iWeb FAQ site is a wealth of information on using iWeb and all of it's capabilities.

  • Can't verify student cs6 design suite which I brought from the apple store

    Hi,
I brought the student version of creative suite 6 design standard from the apple store about a month ago and I haven't had any luck getting the serial number. Inside the box I was given a set of instructions which I follow to a 'open customer service case' I then continue to give them the order number and the eligibility proof.  However I got an email back that 'they were unable to identify my order number or coupon number'. So I when back instead to find the coupon number, but there was no mention of a coupon number on my box but the product number look similar to one of the examples given in the email mentioning about the coupon number which begun with 'DSGNxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx'. Thinking this was the coupon number I tried to enter it but I ran out of space in the in box so I guessed this wasn't the coupon number.
I tried using https://www.identit-e.com/default/index/submitadobe instead which asked for the product code but still this came up which problems.
So please help what am I doing wrong or why isn't it working for me?

Which country/region are you located in?  If it North America then you would want to enter your product code on the page indicated.  If you are unable to locate your product code on your box then you may want to work with your reseller to obtain a replacement.
You can find information on locating your Product Code at http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/education-faq.html#main-pars_heading_19.

The biggest challenge of the CLD exam is the 4-hour time limit; the problem(s) can seem like 6-hour task(s) when first taking the practice exams.  It is entirely possible to complete the exam in 2-3 hours; practicing with this in mind is the key to success on the CLD.  The practice exams are VERY reflective of what will be tested on the actual CLD.  The purpose of the CLD is to test style, documentation and more importantly an ability to create a program in the LabVIEW paradigm.  NI’s Core 3 is a very useful course to prepare for the LabVIEW paradigm but the architecture exposed in the course project is almost overkill for what’s needed in the CLD.  My suggestion is to stick with a simple state machine (every time); this derives from the time constraints of the test.  My personal tendency in software design and programming is a very uptight approach to modularity/scalability/extensibility; while these are factors in the marking of the CLD, one can often achieve these desired qualities with a state machine and simple sound programming principles; the solutions to the practice exams will give a good indication of what is expected along these lines.
Studying for the CLD should ideally start with Core 3 and then focus almost exclusively on the practice exams.  I found  taking the practice exams twice was a good way of getting my timing down.  The first pass through the exams should be focused on understanding how to architect/program (i.e. clear out LabVIEW cobwebs) and the second pass should focus on timing.  After you have done a few practice exams, you might note that you can get them done by using the state-machine template (in File>New) and then stepping through the requirements/exam one step at a time and implementing the necessary functionality incrementally.  I found that the requirements in the actual exam were not laid out as nicely as they were in the practice exams – so don’t rely on this approach too much.  In contrast, I found that sitting down and drawing out a state-machine design on paper is not an effective use of time for the exam (though a very sound approach for actual practice).
Documentation and style are important considerations; the prep guide states that you can fail the exam with full functionality if these aspects are badly done.  My suggestion is to do as much of this sort of thing up front; there is less of a time crunch up front than there might be at the end if you are trying to cram that last bit of functionality in at 3:57 hours.  Right from the get go – put in tip strips and descriptions on all of the front panel controls/indicators;  make a *simple* icon for the main simulation VI; put a few lines of description in File>Properties>Documentation for the main VI.  Once this is done, proceed to generating functionality.  When you make sub VI’s, the process should be the same.  You don’t need to document front panel elements on sub VI’s but making a quick icon and File>Properties>Documentation descriptor at the outset will probably pay off in terms of time management and mark optimization.
Leave wire/diagram cleanup to the end – you will probably be adding stuff in that will make the diagram messy again; clean up at the end will eliminate wasting time on cleaning a diagram that will just get messy again anyway.  Don’t use auto-cleanup; your block diagram has to fit in a 1024x768 screen (if you need space – increase the size along either the horizontal or vertical direction – not both!).  Adjust wires either by moving them manually (keyboard shortcuts are critical for this) or use auto cleanup but only on *selected* subsections!
Be extremely comfortable with timing concepts in LabVIEW.  You must be comfortable with timing achieved with functional global variables.  Also, know the ins and outs of the date/time palette (conversion to seconds, time stamps, etc.).
    Good luck.

There wasn't any.  I just meant I gave the same advice (not word-for-word) to others, either on this board or in person.  But we did start a list of hints here:http://forums.ni.com/t5/Certification/CLD-Tips-you-can-t-have-too-many/m-p/2145314#U2145314
If you think of any others, feel free to add to the list.

  • Can anyone recommend a resource for the ACE Exam?

I would like to take the ACE exam for Dreamweaver and want to practice on sample tests. Does anyone have any suggestions for where I may download or purchase sample exams? Also, any other suggestions for helpful resources that can assist with studying? Thank you!

There are sample questions at the end that we found to be actually incorrect.
I have taken only a brief look at that document, and have just two comments:
In spite of the URL, that's not the preparation guide for the ACE (Adobe Certified Expert) exam, but the ACA (Adobe Certified Associate) exam. I believe that ACA is intended for use in schools, and is not considered to be a professional qualification. It certifies individuals have the entry-level skills.
You're right. Both the questions and some of the answers are completely off the wall. Adobe should withdraw that document immediately (and the exam if it bears any relationship to those questions). Sadly, they refused to do so with the Dreamweaver CS3 ACE exam in spite of considerable pressure from Adobe Certified Instructors and Community Experts. The CS3 ACE exam was so bad, Adobe acknowledged a pass in the DW8 exam as sufficient credentials to qualify as a certified instructor.
The document that I pointed to (http://partners.adobe.com/public/en/ace/ACE_Exam_Guide_DreamweaverCS4.pdf) is the ACE exam preparation guide. Apart from the missing screenshot, the questions and answers appear to be OK, although I would debate the wisdom of the strategy suggested in the question about synchronization.
