Developing for iTunes/iPod

I don't know if this is the right message board to ask this, but does anybody know if iTunes and/or the iPod is open to third party software development? For instance, can you write plug-ins for iTunes or write programs that will run on the iPod?

Both are very limited in the plugins department.
iTunes has a plugin archetechture, but it's made mainly for visualizers.

Authorization Error ( -42408 ) for iTunes / iPod

suddenly, itunes invalidated purchased tunes on ipod at the time of sync due to the use of unauthorized computer, which i've been using past years and synced the same ipod almost everyday.
then, i tried to authorize my computer by typing in UserID and password for itunes store. Then a popup displays the failure of authorization due to the unknown error (-42408).
the process below was repeated for 4 times to eliminate any possibility of human error... i repreated itunes > store > authorize computer. the password and id were confirmed to be correct by logging onto itunes store account.
the only special condition would be that the last time, i used ipod until complete exhaustion of its battery charge. nothing changed other than this. ipod was manually rebooted during the attempt to correct the above-mentioned problem. i'm completely lost about why it's happening and how to fix this...

The trick was to log out and log in from the account. (i was using the admin account whole time so it's like re-log in. )
by doing that, iTunes didn't even prompt me to authorize at all.

Developing for iTunes (and iPhone?)

I'm new here - Have been reading through the posts and thought I'd fire one at you.
I'm looking to develop an add-on for iTunes. As far as I can tell, there is no API available except for the visualiser. The only way to interact with iTunes is through AppleScript.
However this makes me wonder how an application such as AccuBeatMix [http://www.wildbits.com/accubeatmix> works... this application seems to have a pretty heavy level of interaction with iTunes - it is able to detect the end of songs and then adjust the volume and speed of the song appropriately.
In addition, it somehow places a check box on the main iTunes window.
How is all this possible just using AppleScript? I can see how, by constatnly querying the application, the detection of track position might be possible (although quite clunky?), but how about the track speed and the checkbox on the interface?
Also, another question... does AppleScript run on the iPhone and is the syntax the same? (ie. if my script runs on OS X will it run on the iPhone?) Presumably applications written in Cocoa will in principle work as iPhones use this framework as well..

There is no interface for working with iPhone's iTunes/your existing iPhone music library through the iPhone. Theoretically OSX apps are easily convertible to iPhone apps, though i think it would require more than just a new compilation for the platform.
If you're looking to create just an OSX iTunes plugin, the iPhone wouldn't really do anything there, and I have no clue what's possible with that.

Photo Management/Folders Synch Wish List for Itunes/Ipod

Love the fact I can synch my photos, pick folders and the order in which they are synched. However, my photo folder structure goes to three levels. Itunes only allows one to select one level of folder and everything within that folder is then copied and displayed in one set.
I'd very much like the ability to tag specific directories to be more generalized and be able to specify specific folders for synching at whatever level of the folder/directory structure one wishes, for as many folders as one wishes. So instead of only being able to tag my FAMILY photo directory I could specifically mark only the CLOSEFAMILY and MYDOG folders within the FAMILY directory.

I think the only way will be to create a new directory, copy the directories you want there, and synch. You could then have a "My Ipod Pictures" directory, which had the family directory only containing the photos from 'mydog' and 'closefamily' directories. Hope this helps. (BTW, you do say that you have plenty of hard disk space)

HELP! Transition from PC to MAC for iTunes/iPod

Okay, so I'm thinking about making the switch from PC to MAC. I understand how to move my music files from one machine to another, but need more specific information on moving my full library (i.e. already attached artwork, and playlists to be more specific). I've got 36,000 songs in my library, with many playlists (too many to re-create from scratch) and artwork that was manually attached for several of the files (over the past couple of years). I don't want to lose any of this. Also, will I need to reformat my iPod (and the 5 other ones in the house), in order to do regular syncs going forward. Appreciate the help anyone can give here.

I forgot, if you want to keep all your playlists, leave the itunes folder on your external drive, or copy to your mac, then redirect itunes to your new folder.

Organizing music for iTunes/ipod- help

Example, I have several Tom Petty songs. However, 3 songs are in one place, 1 song in another place, 7 songs in another place.
SO.. when I go to play all my Tom Petty, and I hit the Tom Petty song that is in a separate folder it will auto stop after that one song, even though there are 10 more Tom Petty songs.
How do I place all my singles by the same artist in the same folder so the music continually plays on my iPhone when I look up Tom Petty.

Make a smart playlist.
Artist contains Tom Petty.

MonoTouch vs Objective-C for iPhone/iPod/iPad development [closed]

For someone with .Net experience and wanting to develop for iPhone/iPod/iPad, is it worth learning Objective-C? Is MonoTouch a good alternative? What are some of the trade-offs when using MonoTouch vs coding in Objective-C?

Most of the information you've suggested there would be found in the source repository.
The only thing you really need is the purpose section, which says what the class is there for.
Would it be tedious to look in repository every time you want to know the other information? I'd say no. How often do you care who the original author was? Or when the file was first created? Plugins (such as Ankh SVN for Visual Studio) often allow you to right
click within your current file and view the repoistory log for the file, so it's not that much of a hassle to actually see this information.
Additionally, if you store the version history in a comment, this comment needs to be maintained. So over time there's a chance it could be lying to you. The source code repository automatically keeps this historical data, so doesn't need that maintenance,
and will be accurate.

Iphone 4 since upgrade to ios 5.1.1 no longer works with made for itunes, iphone devices.

Ever since I upgraded to IOS 5.1.1 my Iphone no longer works for playing music thorugh my Apline car unit, My Logic 3 clock radio, and a Next made for ipod device.
I can sync through ITunes on the PC and can also play videos through the HDMI adapter.   My wifes iphone 4s and the kids hand me down iphone 3s still play fine through these made for Itunes , Ipod , Iphone devices.
I want to downgrade back to the prior IOS I had before Apple encouraged me to install this bugged one.   How do I go about getting a legit non jailbroken prior IOS version installed on my Iphone?
Is Apple aware of this issue , as I have seen blogs about this it is affecting other people?   Will this issue be resolved with ios 6?
Can I get the beta ?

Agreed. Same thing here. Just bought a late model Alpine INE-S920Hd and it is all kinds of broken. I think this is happening because Apple shifted the music and video. Totally buggy. Bluetooth refuses to work properly, too. A2dp keeps stealing the audio from Pandora in the Alpine interface. The ipod controls dont work at all.

How can I get iTunes & iPod updates on cd/rom???

To download the new updates for iTunes & iPod would take days on my dial-up connection!! If someone has this update or can put this update on cd/rom please respond.

ouch. okay, the only thing i can think of to suggest is what beloved and i had to do back in the days when we needed digital photos for on-line applications. we went to a copy store with PCs and broadband (kinkos in our case) and rented a computer for half an hour or so for the photo processing and application submissions.
do you have a copy store anywhere convenient (with a PC with both broadband and a CD burner)?

Disabling the computer's antivirus and firewall during the download and update usually resolves the timeout error.

DRM for iPod/iTunes for multiple iPods, shared computers

In my family there are four people who use iTunes/iPod. Two are adults with Apple IDs, two are children who do not (and will not) have credit cards. We have two shared Windows XP computers and two shared Mac OS 9 machines. We just got our third iPod. Thus far, the first two iPods have been connected to just one machine (a WinXP; iTunes has been used from just one Windows account, I think) and the third iPod has not yet been connected to any computer. I need a sufficiently general explanation of the DRM scheme and relevant configuration options to understand what I can/should do in this situation. Thanks!

The scheme is that songs purchased on any given iTS Account can be authorized for play on a maximum of five separate computers. An iPod can contain items from a maximum of five different iTS accounts at a given time.

Using iTunes For Multiple iPod's

Anyone know how to use iTunes for two iPod's without the songs being erased and all that ...kind of like having two seperate library folders.

Well there are two way to go about this.
Number 1. Having seperate windows accounts, with iTunes on both, will give you seperate libraries.
Number 2. Set both iPods to update Automatically but to only the playlists you select. This will keep your playlists on it and whatever you don't want on there off. Same goes for the other iPod.
I myself use the number 2 option for my iPod Video and my Moms Nano. The only thind you got to remember, if you plan on updating or if you added new music and want it on your iPod, is to select the new playlist you made. This options works great
