DHCP and dual nic

Kia ora Y'all,
Advice please, is it appropriate and necessary to assign a static ip address to the server which runs the dhcp service, for example if I have manually assigned my server 192.168.1.1, do I also have to give it a static ip address of 192.168.1.1 in the DHCP static maps settings.
If yes, how do assign a mac address to an ip address when you are running 2 ethernet connections (macpro) as a link aggregation? that is, do you assign the two mac address's and give them the same ip.

No. Not at all.
The DHCP Static Map setting exists purely so that the server responds with a consistent response (i.e. the same IP address) when a specific MAC address requests a DHCP address.
Since your server has a static/manually assigned address, it's never going to send out a DHCP request and therefore doesn't need a static map entry.
What you do need to do is make sure that your DHCP range does not include the 192.168.1.1 address of your server.

    GLBP is a stable feature and you should not have any problems inplementing it. As long as the configuration is correct and the design has been properly understood the GLBP implementation will work fine.

  • Dhcp and pcmcia NIC startup (SOLVED)

    I'm pretty impressed with Arch up to now, but am having a problem with the pcmcia NIC. I'm sure it's some simple config problem, but I haven't been able to figure it out.
    I'm using a Network Everywhere NP100, which uses the axnet driver. No problems there. I have it set as eth0="dhcp".
    It works fine, but when I restart the box, or start up from a cold start, dhcp isn't assigning an IP, and during boot, network fails on start. After the box is up and running, I have to remove the card from the slot and reinsert it to get dhcp to assign an IP.
    I haven't seen this problem with other distros, so I know it can be fixed, not not sure how. Below is my rc.conf, maybe somebody can spot something I'm missing?

    Removing and reinserting the card is faster than typing out a command so that's what I do.

    No, I just have the one NIC at the moment. I have a wireless pcmcia NIC as well, but haven't installed/configured it yet as I don't use it much and would like to solve this ethernet problem first.

    It's owned by pcmcia, which loads the module itself when the card is detected. This is working perfectly and the driver modules loads no problem. As far as I can tell the problem seems to be with the network daemon itself, but I could be mistaken about this.
    I disabled hotplug for the moment while I try to figure this out. At first I thought hotplug was the culprit but even with it disabled the problem remains. I just haven't bothered to re-enable hotplug as I already have all the modules loading through rc.conf anyway and it speeds up booting.
    Hope the additional info may help figure this out. I'm stumped.

  • Catalyst 3750 12.2(25)SD1 and dual nics

    When a Catalyst 3750 stack master fails or leaves the stack, a cross-stack EtherChannel in trunk mode running Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP) protocol might stop forwarding traffic on some VLANs.
    The workaround is to enable the stack-mac persistent feature by using the stack-mac persistent timer global configuration command. You can also use the shutdown interface configuration command and then the no shutdown command on the EtherChannel interface.
    Network Infrastructure: LAN Routing and Switching
    I have upgrade a Catalyst 37024 TS 2 switch stack to 12.2(25)SED1 from 12.1(14)EA. The switch has an Alpha Server Custer connected to it the cluster has two servers each having two nics . There is a active server which has an application IP address and each server has a Server IP address one nic active ata time.
    All worked ok upto the upgrade. Now every night when the backup runs noone can access the application ip address or the acive server address but te offline server is pingable. This is only for devices outside the serrver VLAN. Devices within the server VLAN can hapily ping any address.
    I thought this was arouing issue but all looks ok and the offline server can be pinged from any where.
    the active server nics areon 1/0/20 and 2/0/24
    Any one have any ideas?

    I forgot to add if I shut both interfaces an then do a no shout on both the issue is resolved until the next night.

    Linksys/Cisco E4200 are compatible with DHCP. Second, these Wireless-N routers are only capable of enabling the VPN traffic to pass through the device.  You will need a VPN router and software to create the actual network to connect with your VPN client.

    1) May I know pros and cons of using Dual NIC and single NIC with VCSE in DMZ?
    2) In order to make H323 and SIP encrypted call, what configuration need to be done on Cisco endpoint, non-cisco endpoint, VCSC and VCSE (both signalling and Media need to be encrypted). 
    3)let say my VCSE is in DMZ- endpoint A (cisco) and endpoint  B (non-cisco) are registered on VCSE. I would like VCSE to use non-traversal call license when A call to B or B call to A regardless of whether H323 or SIP call.How can I force VCSE and endpoints to use non-traversal call. I only want VCSE to handle signalling and media is EP to EP direct. As traversal license is quite expensive.
    I found following information from Cisco document.
    all Cisco TelePresence endpoints are traversal enabled and so a traversal license will always be needed when at least one of the endpoints involved in the call is a Cisco TelePresence endpoint.
     Is it possible to disable traversal client feature of Cisco endpoint?

  • Dual nic's, dual networks, setting this up? [SOLVED]

    Hi,
    I have a laptop with wireless (rt2500) and wired nic. Both work fine, but I am in a situation where I need to connect the wireless to one network, and the wired to another network. (Wireless to the internet, and wired to small home network). Im not trying to bridge them. I can set this up pretty easily, just using DHCP for both the wireless and wired, but after 15 minutes to an hour, requests I make on the wireless side try going over the wired network.
    I tried fix it by:
    route add -net 10.18.0.0 netmask 255.255.0.0 ra0
    route add -net 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 eth0
    but still after a half hour or so the requests I make on wireless (internet) try going over the wired interface.
    Any ideas on how to keep these two interfaces associated with their respective networks?

    I just had an AHA moment and think I solved my problem.
    route -n gives me

    So both eth0 and ra0 have destinations to the 0.0.0.0 network. Thats no good because only ra0 really goes to the internet. so I just did
    route del -net 0.0.0.0 eth0
    So now

  • DHCP and QoS

    Hi all ,
    I'm looking for some way to base the QoS in my LAN on the host's IP address . Of course , there'r many hosts in that network , some of them get their addresses from the DHCP and anyway the question is - is there any way to make the class-maps based on the host without enter the commands manually ? Maybe bind them to DHCP allocation ? Obviously , ACL will do the job but with many hosts on LAN that task becomes very complicated (to me and ,maybe the router too ... just think about many ACLs and MQC commands related to any one among these ACLs) . The perfect solution will be some sort of template , which became active for any device in the LAN ... grouping all together into some "global policy" running on the router . As it happens to be for remote-access clients (L2TP for instance) .

    I dont think so that you can make class-maps using hostname.
    if there are good number of hosts, you can create a separate VLAN for them and make a ACL for that particular subnet. so this way your ACL wont grow..

  • Redundancy with dual nic servers

    Hi I have 2 11500's configured with box-to-box redundancy. I have a number of app servers each with dual nic's (which are Teamed) and which are connected directly to the CSS's. Nic 1 in each goes to the master CSS1 and is therefore live. Nic2 goes to standby CSS2.The CSS's are connected two 4500 switches to the public.I am monitoring the links to the 4500's,if i switch off the master CCS1,we fail over and the servers all connect via nic2 to the new master CCS2. But when the link to the 4500 from the CSS1 Master goes down the CSS'S failover but the nic2's do not connect to the CCS2 because Nic 1 in each server has not failed ie they still see CSS1 as up. Is there a workaround to this problem ?

    I know of no way to link CSS interfaces so that if the uplink goes down, the the other ports are shutdown. There may be another way to configure the adapter teaming or failover on the server side. I know some OS's send out test frames from one adapter to the other to verify network integrity.
    What I'd recommend is that you setup a VLAN on your 4500's for the server's physical connections, and uplink that to a "backend" interface on the CSS. This can be done with the CSS in either a router or bridge configuration, but I'd recommend router mode.

  • Setting Up Dual NIC Cards? Benefit?

    I know that the Mac Pro line comes with Dual NICs and I was wondering how do I set these up to be useful with my Cable Modem and Router? Can they be used to get more speed or are they used together in some other capacity.

    The normal use of dual nic interfaces would be to run double instances of a given server on disparate IP numbers. Dual NIC's are generally employed in order to attach multiple IP addresses to a single machine.
    Another potential use for dual NIC's is internet connection sharing, where your Mac Pro acts as a kind of router; again also this could be used for attaching one NIC to print services and the other NIC for LAN/WAN access.
    OK, actually there are a whole bunch of good reasons for dual NIC cards, but 'doubling your bandwidth' is really not one of them. Believe me, unless you are on a direct fiber OC-10 20 foot from your ISP's NOC, then your existing single NIC has 1000 times the bandwidth of your incoming WAN connection.
    It is likely possible to interleave dual NIC cards between two machines for bandwith purposes; but if that were going to be the canse, just identify one as "in" and the other as "out" (both machines would have to have dual NIC's to make this mean anything) but again, I honestly do not see a real world use for this...

    I have Solaris 10 installed on an x-86 box with 2 nics installed.
    I am trying to configure one nic to use dhcp and access the internet as well as on the 2nd nic have an nis network that has a static ip range that will be a master to 3 other clients. Is this possible? I've been able to configure the primary nic with dhcp to go out to the net, but wasn't very successful with NIS on nic 2. Seeking advice on this.

  • Proliant DL380 G5 - Dual nic drops gateway after windows update.

    On yesterday Microsoft windows update updated my DL 380 G5 sever. Part of the update was a nic driver. Needless to say the server didn’t like the update. After the update, the dual nic card will not keep the gateway. I've rolled back the driver but still no luck. Any ideas on how to fix this? My first thought was roll back the driver. Second thought download the drivers from the manufacture but I cannot determine which nic it is. How can I go about finding the exact nic type and name?

  • How share ADSL Internet connection to all machines without RRAS but using Windows Server DHCP and DNS

    I have this scenario on my small network with 10 PCs (connecting from outside to inside my network):
    1) Modem with ADSL connection
    2) Wireless Router with public IP on WAN interface 
    3) Switch 
    4) Server 2012 with DC/DHCP/DNS (with 2 NICs) and others servers/desktops machines 
    I want to share internet to servers and desktops.
    I was able to share internet by 2 methods searching on google, but I am not satisfied with them:
    First method - Using the Wireless Router and its DHCP Server
    I turned on the DHCP inside the Wireless Router. All machines will get an IP and be able to go to Internet, but I don’t have the ability to control the DHCP and DNS in the router
    how I would like to have, because the server DHCP and DNS must be turned off on Windows Server.
    Second method - Using the Windows Server RRAS NAT, DHCP and DNS server
    I have 2 NICs on the server:
    NIC1 - CONNECTED TO SWITCH
    IP: 192.168.1.1
    MSK: 255.255.255.0
    GTW:192.168.1.1
    DNS:192.168.1.1
    NIC2 - CONNECTED TO WIRELESS ROUTER
    (the LAN IP of the wireless router is 172.16.0.1)
    IP: 172.16.0.2
    MSK: 255.255.0.0
    GTW: 172.16.0.1
    DNS: 172.16.0.1
    After installing and setting the RRAS with NAT at the Server, the internet began to work on all machines but at some times the internet stop to load some
    random webpages, and if you hit a couple of times the F5 button, the webpage open sometimes, but very, very slow.
    I saw other people in foruns saying that RRAS is not very good, and could cause weird things at internet connection, so, now I think the internet is horrible
    because of RRAS. After notice that internet is bad I tested it connecting a cable direct to the lan ports of the Wireless Router, and the internet works fast and perfect.
    What is the best thing to do in my case to maintain Windows Server DHCP and DNS turned on and Internet be shared without loss of quality?

    please deploy according to this network topology. please turn off DHCP from router and use internal NAT function to share internet. Detailed configurations:
    Router part:
    LAN address: 192.168.1.1/24
    DHCP part:
    scope name : site name
    address pool: 192.168.1.3-192.168.1.254
    scope options:
    router:192.168.1.1
    DNS server:192.168.1.2
    DNS part:
    configure a forwarder to point to the public DNS address such as 8.8.8.8
    with these settings, you can maintain Windows Server DHCP and DNS turned on and Internet be shared via hardware router.

    Your assumption is correct.  The server does however only
    have the Intel HD3000 graphics like the base model with
    no option, at this time, for the discrete graphics chip.  So,
    depending on what you are using it for, that could be a deal
    breaker.  Remember that your MBP does have a discrete
    graphics chip.
    I have a 2011 Mini Server connected to a Thunderbolt display
    that gets used as an engineering workstation and general
    personal use (some photo editing, LP restoraton, general
    internet browsing).  You simply just not enable any of the
    server services.  I find the combination to work quite well
    for my purposes.  I also have a 13" 2.7 GHz i7 Macbook Pro
    which is pretty much strictly for work.  As far as CPU
    power it is pretty much equivelent to your Mini.  For the most
    part I find the Mini does outperfom my MBP.  I heavily use
    Parallels and Windows7 virtual machines, so the more cores
    the better.
    So, If you do a lot of CPU intensive stuff that is multithreaded,
    the Server may help.  If it is graphics intensive and your software
    heavily leaverages the GPU, you may actually take a hit on
    performance.

  • Problems setting up Verizon DSL (DHCP) and AirPort Extreme

    I have Verizon DSL with DHCP and old router (Linksys WRT54G). I've bought iMac and new router (AirPort Extreme) to connect to iMac wirelessly. I have a Windows computer connected to the Linksys WRT54G. Now here is the story. I can connect verizon DSL modem (it's in bridge mode) to PC directly and connect to the Internet. When I plug AirPort between the DSL modem and PC, auto-configuration doesn't work, AirPort utility says there is problem with internet connection. Router simply can't obtain IP address from verizon's DHCP server. I've tried to copy DNS server addressed from the IP configuration in Windows, the AirPort light went green and Windows indicated connection as successful, however I still cound't browse the Internet because gateway is not set. Any ideas how to make AirPort connect to the internet using DHCP instead of manual settings? I can try to do it from the mac if needed, I don't think it would make any difference though.

    Sorry, I can't quite track exactly what you are trying to do.
    What would the network that you are trying to set up look like?
    Modem>AirPort Extreme>Computers? Are you saying that you won't be using the Linksys in the new setup?
    Sounds like you need to set the Airport Extreme up to supply PPPoE service (which the Linksys is doing now-if the modem is in bridge mode), but I will wait for your response before offering specific info.
    If you've been fiddling with settings, we may need to do a hard-reset on the AX to start over. You should not be fiddling with DNS, etc. Almost always, these settings are done automatically when you have the device set up correctly.
