DHCP DNS for Dial up

I have two dial in Async interfaces on a router and am assigning addresses via a local pool. How would DNS be assigned in this case. I don't see any location or commands for setting DNS for the pool or interfaces.

Brian
When I configured dial access on AS5350s I supplied DNS information to clients using the config command:
async-bootp dns-server
I am not sure what router or IOS version you are using but assume that this command probably would work for you.

  • Disable dhcp proxy for PPP VPN (outside DHCP server + NPS)

    Hi,
Our VPN setup is to authenticate / authorize via RADIUS to a Microsoft NPS server / Active Directory and use our internal DHCP server to receive its information. We are running a Cisco 2811, with firmware release k9 15.1- 4.M5.
However, we have been having some issues with our setup for a dial-in VPN. We managed to get almost everything working.
The user can dial in and authenticate and it even builds the proper PPTP tunnel. However, the client machine when it sends out a DHCP requests seems to get forced to proxy through the Cisco router. Thus what the DHCP server sees is a encoded MAC address from the cisco all the time and sees the client as being the cisco router not the VPN client/user. This is rather frustrating, as in Active directory DNS tables it will show up as the router having x number of different IP addresses and the end client doesn't show up at all.
I have tried utilizing a bunch of different configuration options to test, all with the same outcome.
Utilizing "ip helper-address <dhcp server>", didn't work to forward correct. Thent trying to turn of all DHCP services, with the global command of "no service dhcp", didn't change any result. Neither did setting a global command of "ip dhcp-server <dhcp server>".
What i am trying to acchive is that the cisco does NOT mess with the dhcp request and just allows it to pass through.
    Anyone have any idea?

    Hello Stephen.
How is this behaviour in 7.5? It's weird because in the individual interfaces you might change the value, but it doesn't get accepted. So it still seems that it's a global setting... but then: why showing this item to be changed on each interface?
    Kind regards,
    Flavio.

  • Slow ARP response for dial-in clients

I’ve been experiencing an intermittent issue with remote PC’s connecting to a Cisco AS5350 Universal Gateway - basically, a RAS server.
The issue as far as I’ve been able to pinpoint seems to be related to the amount of time it takes the dial-in client to register an ARP entry on the local network where the RAS server and other servers are connected.   If I start an extend ping to one of the servers on the local network (not to the RAS server) once my dial-up connection has been established, I typically see anywhere between 3 and 18 ICMP request timeouts before I start receiving replies.  And if at the same time I start an extended ping to the IP address of the RAS server, ICMP replies are received immediately with no request timeouts.
    Topology:
    Dial-in Client <===> AS5350 RAS <===> L2 Switch <===> Server

The switch that the AS5350 and the servers are connected to is a WS-C2960G-8TC-L layer-2 switch with a very basic config.  Basically they only thing I’ve changed during the course of my troubleshooting is the STP mode, STP forward time and to enabled STP portfast on the uplinks to the AS5350 and the server… see configuration below:

The first line of the debug shows the switch creating an “incomplete entry” for the dial-in client (192.168.240.131).
For all subsequent ICMP requests, you can see that the dial-in client has a MAC address of 0000.0000.0000 – I guess you would call this an incomplete entry.
On the last line of the debug output, you can see that the dial-in client (192.168.240.131) finally gets the MAC address of the AS5350 (000d.280c.fe1b) assigned to it – this is when we start getting ICMP replies.
So during this capture, there were 12 ICMP request timeouts before the dial-in client started receiving replies.

Is anyone aware of an IOS bug or an error in my configurations that could be causing the delay in creating an ARP entry for the dial-in client?
I am open to any suggestions.
BTW, if I add static arp entries on the server, ICMP replies are typically received after one or two request timeouts.
However, I feel this is not a solution to the problem, only a band-aid fix.

  • DNS for internal servers

Okay, this should be simple, and maybe I'm just missing something.
I've recently had to move from a 10.3.9 server to a 10.4.10 server. We have 2 servers in-house, the main one that runs DHCP/DNS/Mail, and a second one which does file service.
    Reference info:
    File Server - 192.168.2.105
    Mail Server - 192.168.2.99
The mail server his handing out DHCP, with the following DNS entries:
    1st - 192.168.2.99
    2nd - 151.164.8.201
    3rd - 151.164.1.8
The mail server had DNS turned up and has 1 primary zone: mail.kccompany.org at 192.168.2.99
Under that it has 3 machines setup under that zone:
    fs - 192.168.2.105
    mail - 192.168.2.99
    www - 64.207.xxx.xxx
Now, here's my problem: When my users try to lookup mail.kccompany.org, they get the external 216.xxx.xxx.xxx address, and not the internal 192.168.2.99 address. I have some mobile users who would like to use and access email from home. I have SMTP authentication working, but when they're inside the network, mail.kccompany.org doesn't translate to the internal address like it should. Am I missing something?
DHCP leases are set for 8 hours. I have been working on this for a week, so they should have updated info. And doing a lookupd -flushdns doesn't seem to effect the issue.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

  • How to set up with cacheing DNS for local network?

Our new Lion Server has a static IP Address pointed to over the internet by our registrar's zone file. Planning the Lion Server installation process with the intent of hosting Web, Mail and Open Directory services to a small number of users who are nearly all located off-site. I do also want Lion Server to be a caching DNS Server and DHCP authority on the local network to replace what dnsmasq does on our current Linux server.
I am looking forward to offloading some of the lower level Linux administration tasks and putting myself in the hands of the Lion Server Setup Assistant and Server App :-) but at the same time don't understand some of  its assumptions and fear having to spend a lot of time experimenting and re-installing.
So, specifically, I want the Server App to know that my Lion Server has a "Host Name for the Internet" but that the DNS it sets up will not be the DNS for my zone - I will be managing that through my registrar's interfaces.
Second problem is my fnot understanding what name space devices on the local network will / should use. e.g.  The Linux server will be available for backups etc  on the local intranet (and optionally have a static ip address on the Internet) but MacBooks, PCs, iPads and iPhones will be served ip addresses by the Lion Server's DHCP. So will / should these dynamic devices have their machine names fully qualified by our domain name with RFC 1918 style ip addresses or something like .local?  How do I tell this to Lion's Server App / Setup Assistant? How easy is it to update these initial settings later?

You do indeed need to have a master zone on lion server.  There's no way to get around that since Open Directory depends on Kerberos and Kerberos depends on the DNS.  LS scripts may see that the rDNS record exists, but I highly doubt that it'll auto configure everything for you... and given the number of possible variables, I bet that even if it worked something would need additional tweaking.
Sounds like an interesting lab excersize.  You should try it on a test server!
Again... you just need to folow the set up procedure that Lion Server presents you with.
It won't be smart enough to see your external records and use them to configure a key distribution center for your OD.
As far as your caching needs...  Could you set up your DHCP server to set the DNS server setting to show your internal server as the first hit, and your external as the second?  That way when the client requests a resolution it'll not get a hit on your local server but will from the external?
The question then is how long will it wait for a response from the first server?  Or will the first server respond with "I don't know" sending the client immediately to the second.
The server set up that I have works similarly.  I have an internal master DNS that is replicated to a secondary.  The first DNS has an A record (community.server.com) that points to the INTERNAL ip address of the secondary server that's also running the web service.  The first server is running DHCP.  It tells the clients to use the first and second servers as it's DNS lookup.
Now...  Externally, my registrar hosts an A record for community.server.com that points to the external IP address of my router which then forwards the request to the proper port on the internal network.
This way, the local clients internally look up and get a response locally when they go for community.server.com.  Externally, clients that look up community.server.com get the external connection to the router in my school.
Yikes...  I fear that this is as clear as mud!

  • SBS 2011 no longer issues DHCP leases: DHCP, DNS, and AD Errors

Hi all. On early 8/13/2012 and into the morning, our UPS failed several times. The battery seems to be fine but the unit was shutting off power to the unit which means the (Windows SBS 2011 Standard) server shut off unexpectedly several times.I replaced
    the UPS.
Now I'm trying to figure out what in the world this did to the server. It seems DHCP, DNS, and AD all have issues, as seen in the logs below. The client PC's are going offline one-by-one because the leases are expiring and it can't connect to the server
to renew. When trying to start the DHCP service, I get a 20013 error saying it cannot be started.
So I attempted to follow a kb article and repair the database but that didn't work because it seems the Jetpack utility is not in SBS 2011? And even at that, I'm thinking it may not even be a corrupted DHCP database due to the other errors in the event log.
This is a small office and I only know enough to be dangerous but usually I can just follow a kb to fix any issues. But there are so many errors, this one has me stumped..   Could any Server whizzes identify the big picture here?

  • Internet DHCP/DNS issues with WRT1900ac

I've had a WRT1900ac now for about 2 weeks and the problems seem to be escalating.  Need help.  And yes, I've already read dozens of threads about these issues and nothing seems to be working.
Most of the problems seem to be centered around this DHCP/DNS issue that so many have been reporting.
    First, the symptoms:
Galaxy S4 phones when connected via wifi have some apps that don't update (facebook and google play)
Some computers (both Win 7) will connect to the network just fine, both wired and wireless - but won't be able to get to the internet
I've spent the last 2-3 days of my life reading forums and trying all sorts of things to get this to work properly (like my old router) and I'm still stuck.  Some things I've tried:
Firmware is up-to-date (latest version: 1.1.8.164461)
Manually assigned static DNS in router config settings (connectivity -> local network) to various combinations including the router address, 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4, 75.75.75.75, 75.75.76.76 (I have comcast), OpenDNS addresses, etc.  I read that the router address is not needed, so I stopped including it.
I manually assigned IPs and DNS on the Galaxy S4 phones and that seemed to work... but also seems unnecessary.
I've reserved DHCP addresses on the computers in question, that didn't seem to work, I also manually set DNS on one of the comupters (can't on the other... long story/not my computer) and that worked for a while and then stopped working.
The only way to get one of the computers on the internet now is to turn on the guest network (even though the computer is hard wired to the router), connect, and then the wired network works.  No clue why this is, but my guess is that it needs the guest network for DNS, then it fails back over to the wired network.  Once that happens, I can actually turn off the wifi on the computer and everything works great... until I reboot.  Key point: I can't change any settings on that box other than entering in SSID/passphrase info for the wireless connection.  I can connect to the regular (non-Guest) wifi just fine - I just can't ever get to the internet.
I've tried massaging DHCP settings on the router until I'm blue in the face - Static DNS, reserving DHCP addresses, hell I even put one of the computers in the DMZ to see if that would work and it still can't connect to the internet (it's worth noting that with my old router, Linksys WRT310N, the setup was literally plug-and-play - no hassle with any of this).
I've tried countless router reboots, factory resets, turning off my modem and router for 2+ minutes, and nothing is working.
I even read somewhere that if you modify your DHCP settings at all that the WRT1900ac stops doing DNS properly and breaks, so I even tried several "hard" factory resets and used all the default DHCP/DNS settings.  And it worked... for a few hours.
Seriously, I'm at my wit's end.  I'm out a lot of money on this thing and it's been one headache after another.  Please help.

I think for most people its a bad idea to hold out that hope, lol. It seems like a great piece of hardware but if you really need a router and don't want to have to 'play' with it, its probably not a good choice. I have an EA6900 that I am very happy with but it has the same restrictions as far as DNS and I really hate the idea that I am forced to use the smartwifi portal. I would really like for them to give me a choice of the old gui or the new one and let ME decide. Lots of routers to choose from out there now and new ones seem to be coming out all the time so do some reading and see if something suits you better. Good luck!

  • DHCP DNS Management Console Error

Downloaded the DHCP DNS Management Console and logged in......login error
    ERROR_INCORRECT_PORT_IP
    New to linux.
    thanks for your help

Is this a DSfW server? Because on a DSfW server you have to use port
1636 instead of 636 to connect to the Edir side of the server.
Don't try to use port 389 (or 1389 on a DSfW server) as this does only
work on servers which are specifically configured to allow that.

  • DHCP pools for LWAP's with multiple models

I have 2 different AP models (1130's & 1140's) for which I want to create a DHCP pool on a core layer 3 switch with an Option 43 pointing to the Wireless LAN Controller. In conjunction with the Option 43 entry however, I need to specify the AP type as an ASCII string in the Option 60 parameter. Problem is, how can this be done for multiple ASCII strings; ie. multiple AP models? The DHCP pool option 60 entry only allows for one string and you can only enter one option 60 command per DHCP pool. Surely it is common to have more than one AP model and that this can be done without having to resort to multiple DHCP pools (one for every model)?
Can anyone shed some light on this for me please? Would be much apprciated as I've come up blank on CCO documentation!

I usually just stage the AP first to join a WLC and to make sure it works prior to installing it. Pllace it on the same submnet as the management and let it join and then set the primary, secondary and or tertiary. Then you can move it to any vlan you want. If you want to use DHCP Option or DNS, then you should know that if for example it is an RCVK IOS previous to capwap it will only do LWAPP. Once it joins to the WLC in LWAPP it takes a new IOS the unit will do CAPWAP.
As an example 1140 have an RCVK IOS that only run CAPWAP, so it should only do CAPWAP:
    CISCO-LWAPP-CONTROLLER and CISCO-CAPWAP-CONTROLLER
Create two A records both pointing to the same controller if you want to use DNS.
    DHCP Option 43:
DHCP Option 43 is limited to one access point type per DHCP pool. You must configure a separate DHCP pool for each access point type.

  • Self-assigned IP after trying to renew DHCP lease for former network

    Hi all,
MacBook Pro 15" purchased in Februrary 2008, currently running 10.5.5, up-to-date with patches as of yesterday, 10/20/2008.
For a few weeks now, I've been consistently unable to connect to wireless networks (secured or unsecured, public or private) after changing networks (i.e. going from home to a coffee shop).
I have control over my home network router, and its logs show that upon connecting to the network, OS X tries to renew a DHCP lease for the previous network it was on. Upon receiving the "bad network" DHCP reply, instead of releasing the lease and obtaining a new one, the AirPort interface is immediately assigned an IPV4LL address (from 169.254.0.0/16) and no combination of changing network settings, changing AirPort settings, or rebooting will eliminate the old DHCP lease.
The end result is that my MBP is entirely nonfunctional on some wireless networks that other clients (both Windows and Mac) seem to have no trouble accessing. The problem is quite annoying because I can't connect to access points that (previously) worked fine and whose configurations haven't changed.
In any case where this problem occurs, an old DHCP lease for a different network (10.0.0.0/8 when trying to get on 192.168.0.0/24 or vice versa) is present, so I strongly suspect a DHCP problem. In all cases, I have perfect connectivity to the access point itself, so problems with the wireless connection parameters (including encryption), or those troublesome problems with 802.11b/g/n interoperation seem highly unlikely.
One of two things would help me:
    1) Please tell me how to clear the DHCP lease cache. Deleting files from /var/db/dhcpclient/leases does nothing (they appear again upon reboot, identical save for timestamps even after changing network environments, so the cache must be read at boot time and written at shutdown). Selecting "Renew DHCP lease" from the "TCP/IP" tab in the advanced network settings merely attempts to renew the existing lease (for an invalid IP address); it does not appear to release invalid leases.
    2) If this is really how the DHCP client is behaving, change the DHCP client so that upon receiving the "Bad network" response, it releases (or simply abandons) the lease and obtains a new one, rather than immediately assigning an IPV4LL address to the AirPort interface.
Additionally, is there any documentation on the Apple DHCP client? Under Linux, I could alter dhcpcd parameters to diagnose things like this. I could find no documentation about the Apple DHCP client outside of Mac Help, which wasn't really any help in this case.
Finally, I do not suspect that this is an instance of the problem discussed in http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1352518&tstart=0 as my connection is rock-solid if it can get an IP address when it connects. I've never even seen it hiccup.
    Thanks,
    Matt Z.

I have had wireless problems intermittently for a year, and seriously for 6 weeks. Apple denied the issue and was no help in spite of many tens of thousands of people on their own discussions complaining. I found a post suggesting a couple of things which fixed the problem. I don't know if both are necessary, but the first by itself does not solve the problem.
Lock the channel of your router to channel 1, apparently Apple and 802.11n don't play well together on higher channels. When this becomes a standard this will be resolved I hope.
Open your network preferences, select 'airport' and advanced. Delete unused networks. Select your network.
Open TCP/IP and write down all the settings, configure iPv4 manually. Enter the settings manually. Turn off IpV6.
Open DNS and write down your DNS server. Delete it and re-enter it manually.
This has worked on 2 macbooks and an iMac for the last 3 weeks with no network drops.

  • Setting iOS DNS for All WiFi Networks

This article describes how to set the DNS for WiFi connections on iOS:
    http://techinch.com/blog/change-your-dns-settings-on-iphone-ipod-touch-and-ipad
The problem is that it specifies DNS for an individual network
    connection, not for all connections.
Does anyone know a way to change iOS DNS for all WiFi networks in one
    fell swoop?

I have my ios devices DNS set via DHCP
You'd have to move to an MDM solution if you want over the air, push profile configuration setting to the devices
such as osx server Profie Manager. You may be able to do it with custom settings, I haven't tried it myself
The basic wifi setting in OSX server PM only allow settings for wifi SSID password etc
no DNS settings ip address etc. alternative MDM solutions may give you more options

  • Brief HOWTO: subnet with DHCP, DNS and forwarding

I finally took some time today to learn how to set up a DHCP server for ad-hoc direct wired connections and ended up with DNS and subnet forwarding too. I have posted a summary along with a launcher script here.
I would be interested in feedback from users with more network configuration experience. Are there any glaring security holes or stupid mistakes in my setup? If not, I plan to add links to the relevant articles in the wiki as I would have liked more concrete examples when I was setting this up. I felt like I was just cobbling together bits and pieces from different sources and it took some trial and error to get forwarding working right with limited permissions.
    edit
I already realize that I can tie it down further by specifying source ranges for incoming traffic from the wired subnet.

    Hi,
Could you type “route print“ on CMD, and post the result here?
It would be helpful if you may describe the phenomenon of the problem? such as changes before the problem occurs, any prompt error message, related operations except for these logged Event ID.
You may reference the link below for reference.

Thanks Eve! I appreciate your attempt to help. I inadvertently posted my reply for the Route table without quoting you first. Sorry about that.
As far as the problems go, time to logon to server > 5 minutes. Group Policy issues abound. DNS issues (as mentioned). Thought I had an easy one for you. Sorry about that.
I have one client computer running Windows 7x64 (call it My Workstation) that I back the server and other client PC's up to. The clients have no problem, but after a day or two, the server can no longer "see" the My Workstation and the backup fails.
But then when I reboot the My Workstation, the server "sees" it again!
    Furthermore, I backup a 10TB RAID 6 array on
My Workstation to yet another client for redundancy (Call it WORKSTATION2-PC), but if I try to click on the computer icon in Windows Explorer for WORKSTATION2-PC, I get the error "Windows cannot access \\WORKSTATION2-PC. However if I type in
the ip address or WORKSTATION2-PC, I have no problems.

  • DHCP & DNS Server 2008

    Hello,
I'm not sure how the following is working.
    asa5525
    anyconnect version 3.1
    windows server 2008R2
When you come in via VPN I send clients to the windows server for DHCP/DNS info and records get created in the FLZ and RLZ. When folks disconnect from VPN those records in both FLZ and RLZ get purged instantly. When your on wired and disconnect those records in both zones do not get purged. I have my VPN scope and wired scope setup exactly the same.  I'm new to managing DNS and DHCP and know there's a lot to learn but it seems odd that when leaving a VPN session those records fall off right away. I'm not sure if the ASA has something to do with it or the anyconnect client itself.
    thanks for any help!

  • DHCP DNS options

I have a small office, served by an SA520 and Road Runner cable modem.
What's the recommended setting for our users DNS?  Right now our DHCP (via the built in router DHCP server) passes out it's own address as the DHCP server.  So client machines point to 192.168.1.1 as the DNS server.  Our WAN config on that router then points to the Road Runner DNS servers.
Would it be better performance if we passed down the direct Road Runner DNS servers to the clients?  Or even the google open DNS servers?  It seems like performance would be better if they went directly to a DNS server rather than proxying through the router.
    Thanks

DNS is a distributed system to allow load balancing across multiple dns servers.  basically the sa520 is a caching dns proxy.  The way it works is:
client wants to connect to something (www.cisco.com for example).  The client looks in local dns cache, if it has resolved this recently it will use the locally cached IP to connect.  (fastest)
if the local cache has timed out or does not have an entry for www.cisco.com, the client  goes to its dns server (sa520), if the site is cached there, the SA sends the dns reply back and then the  client goes to the site.  If the site is not cached, the sa520 will go to it's resolver (Roadrunner), and RR dns may go to it's resolver, and the process continues until the dns process gets to a server that knows the .com     .cisco.     and   www  (these might be 3 different servers)
but, and here's where the local caching comes in to make it faster.  if you have multiple devices on the network it is likely someone else has already gone to this site, it is cached locally and the router can return a result without resolving over the internet.
This is more important with web pages that have multiple http connections to multiple sites (facebook icons, ads, twitter links, graphics, etc).
Local caching also puts less of a load on the root internet servers, or googles dns.
for a middle config, you can point your SA520 wan dns settings to 8.8.8.8 (google) and see if it impacts your performance, but it really depends on the mix of dns requests that are happening on your network.
generally local caching on the router pointing to a fast dns is the best mix to reduce traffic and DNS querys, but still respond quickly.
Note, a lot of 'slow internet' issues are really caused by slow dns resolution (along with bad programming of web pages with 10s or hundreds or links on them.
    hope it helps,
    Dan
