Different clock frequency on hyper-threaded cores?

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, It's not really an issue but has be bothering me for some time now and google didn't find an answer for me....
I'm currently using an i7-5500U with 2 physical cores (4 HT cores).
Yet, when I check the clock frequency on the system it shows a different value for each of the 4 HT cores:
cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep MHz
cpu MHz : 3001.031
cpu MHz : 2975.906
cpu MHz : 2994.468
cpu MHz : 2901.562
How can this be possible when there are only 2 physical cores?
Shouldn't the HT cores share the same frequency on the same physical core?
If I'm getting this right, hyper-threading simply means interleaving 2 instruction streams into a single (physical) core to reduce pipeline hazards right?
This just boggles my mind....

The numbers are different each time, here are 3 more samples:
cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep MHz
cpu MHz : 2937.187
cpu MHz : 2954.250
cpu MHz : 2977.500
cpu MHz : 2990.250
cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep MHz
cpu MHz : 2954.812
cpu MHz : 2981.812
cpu MHz : 2996.343
cpu MHz : 2987.062
cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep MHz
cpu MHz : 2969.250
cpu MHz : 2936.718
cpu MHz : 2985.093
cpu MHz : 2980.031

  • Once and for all: Hyper-threading, turbo boost on Core i5 MBA?

    Hey, all.
There is a lot of conflicting information on whether the new Core i5 MacBook Airs (as opposed to the upgraded Core i7 options) support hyper-threading. As best I can gather, there is still no "official" Apple statement on the subject. I thought I'd gin up another conversation in the event someone has more definitive information. In case anyone wants a fresh bit of provocation, earlier today I asked one of Apple's online "Live Chat" experts. Here's what she said:
The Core i7 offers Triple Channel memory, hyper-threading, and full dual 16x video bandwidth.
But the i5 doesn't offer the TurboBoost or hyperthreading.
You would have to do the upgrade to the i7 for that.
    Agree? Disagree?

Here is a comparison of the three processors used for the 2011 MBA.
It would appear that the i5 does have Turbo Boost (and Hyperthreading), unless Apple's specification calls for disabling TB.
But, if we look at some of the benchmark testing, the results would seem to imply that the specification only differs by the differences shown in these charts, hence Turbo Boost would be evident across all the Airs.

  • Hyper-V Core and OWIN/Katana web app

Hi, Is it possible to run an OWIN/Katana app on Hyper-V Core?
    Best Regards Biagio Paruolo Italy

Actually, with one server being Intel and the other being AMD, you cannot cluster them.  Nor can you do live migration because of the different processor types.
In regards to the management of the Hyper-V hosts, it is much easier to keep them both in the same domain.  You can manage them if they are not part of the domain, but it requires more set-up, so I would keep them in the domain, particularly for your
    home lab.
As for best practices, here is a good blog post -

we had also configure the Sun WTK 2.3 beta version & j2sdk1.4.2_13 in IBM Rational Test RealTime tool for profiling the results of my MIDP Application.
    Queries:
Q1: is there any way to set the WTK or Emulator parameters as real time Device configurations like (Processor, memory, clock frequency, etc as real time device.
We are also having a Profiling Tool called RVDS3.0 ,it has armulate.dse file, which allows us to change the parameters of any target device but unfortunately it doesnt support MIDP Application for profiling.

  • I7 clock frequency ridiculously high in 3.15

Hi, after upgrading to the 3.15 kernel the CPU clock frequency is very high even when in idle mode. Previously (in 3.14) it went down to 800MHz, now the i7z utility gives the following output (while htop shows no heavy processor usage):
Real Current Frequency 3539.79 MHz [100.00 x 35.40] (Max of below)
    Core [core-id] :Actual Freq (Mult.) C0% Halt(C1)% C3 % C6 % Temp
    Core 1 [0]: 3539.79 (35.40x) 1.06 97.9 1 0 28
    Core 2 [1]: 3499.31 (34.99x) 1 100 0 0 27
    Core 3 [2]: 3497.60 (34.98x) 1 99.3 0 0 25
    Core 4 [3]: 3513.86 (35.14x) 0 100 0 0 26
This is reproducible on two of my machines (one being a laptop which is now constantly in turbo mode unnecessarily draining its battery). Everything regarding frequency scaling is set to the defaults, intel_pstate is enabled.
    echo 20 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate/max_perf_pct
immediately sets the clock frequency of all cores to 800MHz, so I assume pstate is working.
The CPU models are i7-4770K and i7-4510U.
Any help or further information on this issue?

I can confirm that, my Xeon E3-1230v3 (haswell) keeps running at turbo clock (100x37) in idle
Real Current Frequency 3694.77 MHz [99.94 x 36.97] (Max of below)

    Core 4 [3]: 3694.77 (36.97x) 2.33 89.2 6.87 1.33 39
It seems that something went wrong with haswell CPUs and intel_pstate

  • Is Aperture 3 enabled for hyper-threading?

That would make the difference betweening getting a Mac with a Core i7 processor.

There is a big difference between multicore and hyper-threading.
Basically you have three technologies, multiprocessor, multicore and hyper-threading. The first two give you multiple physical hardware. In the case of the first, multiprocessor, you get multiple independent CPU's. In the second, multicore, you get multiple processing units on a single chip.
In the third case, hyper-threading,  each processor gets a logical 'twin'. That each each physical processors pretends to be two processors.
So that's the hardware. From a software perspective you have multi-tasking  multu-processing and multi-threading.
Multi-tasking is the illusion that many things are happening at once on a single core system. Its been around since the late 60's usually called a time sharing systems. The OS switches between tasks loading one in as it unloads another. Happens fast enough so that it appears that things are happening at the same time but they are not.
Multi-processing is multi-tasking but on a system with multiple cores (or cpus). Each core gets a program and can run simultaneously. OS X was designed for this from the beginning using SMP (symmetric multiprocessing). So each application you are running gets its own core
Multi-threading is multi-tasking within a single application. Again OS X is designed for this. Applications create threads and then the OS can run those threads on an available core. Of course it doesn't always make sense to do this. If the application needs a calculation to finish before it can proceed nothing is gained by running the calculation on a separate core.
Aperture makes use of a lot of the technology in the system. Which will give you the biggest performance hit is hard to say. I still haven't seen any real world benchmarks on Aperture.  Maany users here have there own stories and will swear by the solutions they have decided on.
The GPU is important. Aperture uses the Core Imaging Technology and the best GPU you can get for your system is a plus. However Core Imaging is also setup to make use of the fastest execution path available. So if you;re doing something that he CPU can do faster then the GPU it will go that route. And in that case having extra cores lying around would be a plus.
So to answer your intended question, does Aperture make use of multi-threading (not hyper-threading). The answer is yes. Does it make a tremendous difference, that depends on your definition of tremendous. You'll never get twice the performance when running on two cores that much I can say for sure.

  • Is Hyper-threading enabled on the i5 and i7 iMacs

I am interested in upgrading to a 27" i5 or i7. According to intels site all i-core processors support Hyper-threading. At work I use a quad core Xeon on a HP computer with Windows 7. The system reports that I have 8 cores in performance monitor as it sees each core as 2 cores with Hyper-threading enabled in the Bios.
Does Apple enable hyper-theading in EFI and does Mac OSX see 8 cores in the activity monitor and correctly show the activity of each thread? I suspect if it only shows 4 cores that hyper-threading is not activated on the iMacs. I want to get the most out of the processors capabilities since I am paying a premium for it and so I wont get a current generation machine if it is crippling the processors ability to run 2 threads per core as intel advertises. I would expect with Grand Central in 10.6 that hyper-threading would dramatically increase performance.
Can someone answer this question definitively?

Intels site states clearly that the i3 i5 and i7 all support hyper threading.. if only the i7 supports it on the iMac then apple is crippling the chip..

  • Confused about the 'cpu fsb clock frequency' setting, etc., in cell in bios

just got a new k8n neo2-f nforce3 board with an a64 3500+ venice chip.  It is properly recognized in the bios and windows as an a64 3500+ at 2.2ghz, but I'm confused about the cell menu settings in the bios. I see a 'cpu fsb clock frequency' which was automatically set at 200mhz, but the fsb runs at 1Ghz (1000mhz), so what is the 'fsb clock frequency' if not equal to the cpu fsb?  Is 200 the correct setting for that?  Should I need to change any of the other settings in here?  I wonder, because my 3dmark03 score only went up 200 points from the same system with a AthlonXP 2500+ chip and kt4avl mobo, which seems like a low increase to me.....

I would set that to Manual in BIOS, so that you can incremently increase the CPU speed without causing a sudden crash. Each system is different and operates within the specs of not only the CPU, but system memory and PCI-E add-ins as well. Your video card is the primary driver behgind your 3DMark scores...but you haven't listed that?!

  • 845PE Max2 & Hyper Threading in BIOS?

    Hi all.
I know i dont have a Hyper Threading CPU
but i dont have the option in my BIOS,why?
Im using the latest bios v1.2.
Shouldnt it be an option for it,like the manual says?

    MSI 845PE max2 (MS-6704) bios 1.2
    has HT-function enable/disable in
    in Advanced bios features -menu.
It may require DDR333 , bur I'm not sure.
It's different thing, when you enables it without 3,06 GHz cpu, works it or not. Maybe not...

  • The core clock is slow or no core clock connected for this ILA or the ILA core may not meet timing.

[Labtools 27-1395] Unable to arm ILA 'hw_ila_1'. The core clock is slow or no core clock connected for this ILA or the ILA core may not meet timing.
I have seen related forums but cant get any help. My timing is completely fine. I tried all JTAG frequencies from 1.5MHZ to `12 MHZ. My clk for ILA core runs at 100 MHZ.
If i remove one IP , then the ILA core works.  THE BD is attached. If i remove the right most IP(HLS_croppin) it works. I really cant understand. There is nothign worng with the timin in either case.

There are four possible reasons for this problem:
    - The trigger condition is never met;
    - The trigger clock (clock mapped to the ILA Core) is stopped;
    - A known issue exists with the Storage Qualification feature;
    - BUFG is not being used on JTAG CLK (for the ICON).
The trigger condition is never met
Check the message at the bottom of the ChipScope Analyzer window. If it is similar to "Waiting for trigger, Sample buffer has 0 samples(0%)," proceed as follows:
    1. Go to "Trigger Setup" and "Trigger Immediate." If ChipScope Analyzer starts the acquisition and shows the samples (the waveform appears), your design is fine; the clock is running, but your trigger condition never occurs.
    2. In the "Trigger Setup windows, ensure that you have set the condition correctly if you are sure that this event (the trigger condition) happens in your design.
    The trigger clock is stopped
If the message at the bottom of the window is similar to "Waiting for Core to be armed, slow or stopped clock," the trigger condition is not the problem -- the ILA Core does not have a valid clock and is not able to start the acquisition. To fix this, ensure that you have mapped a valid clock (in ChipScope Inserter or ChipScope Generator). If you are not sure if the clock mapped to the ILA Core is running, try to connect your system clock instead (or a clock that you are sure is running).
BUFG is not used on ICON's JTAG clock
If the JTAG clock does not use a BUFG, the "Waiting for upload" message can appear.
In some instances, slowing down the cable speed might provide a suitable work-around.

  • Unable to detect Hyper Threading of CPU SL6WE 3.2 in MSI-865PE Neo2

Hi! I am new to this forum and need some help. I have just installed a  Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHz Northwood SL6WE 478 800MHz/512k . I bought this on e-bay and understand that this cpu supports hyper threading. I have enabled hyper threading in the bios, but only see one cpu in Widows System Properties and only one cpu in Windows Task Manager. I had a 2.6 cpu installed previously, no hyper threading. My motherboard is an MSI-865PE Neo2 version 1.1, 2GB Ram ( 4x512 ?), Thermaltke TR2-430W power supply, Freezer 4 Arctic Cooler, Nvidia GeForce 6600, LG DVD RAM burner, 16x DVD ROM, WD 250 gig and an Hitachi 80 gig hard drive. I also used Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste (after using Arcticclean and Surface Purifier). Have I missed somethig? Would appreciate help in solving why I have no hyper threading.

You should get close to or above 6GB/s at

  • How to manage different load frequencies in OWB?

How to manage different load frequencies in OWB?
We are using OWB repository 10.2.0.1.0 and OWB client 10.2.0.1.31. The Oracle version is 10 G (10.2.0.3.0). OWB is installed on Linux.
We have situation to bring data feed into database using OWB on different load frequency. Eg. Daily, weekly and monthly.
Are there any builtin features/best approaches in OWB to implement the above?
Does runtime audit tables maintain such load frequency data?
If not, do we need to maintain our own tables (custom) to maintain such data?
How do we able to validate before starting ETL process with respect to previous load frequency for current load?
How did our forum members handled above situations?
    Any idea ?
    Thanks in advance.
    RI

If you look at the OWB public function WB_RT_GET_LAST_EXECUTION_TIME you can examine the query OWB uses to return this information. It is based entirely on public views that you should already have synonyms for in your OWB user.
Now, how you want to implement logic to determine if a mapping is run is entirely up to you If you are using process flows you could embed your call to start a mapping in a custom transformation that queries the repository and starts a given mapping if it deems the correct interval to have passed. We do something similar as a means to perform a process flow restart (it will skip over any successfully completed mappings from the last run if the last COMPLETE run did not finish succesfully), so that a restart picks up where the last run failed.
The main caveat I would make to mining the runtime repository is that someone purging old data might very well purge the data you are depending on, so you might want to build a couple of tables to hold your own metadata for you. E.g. one table holding the mapping name and desired interval between loads, and another holding the mapping name and last run date. The second table could get updated by the post-mapping procedure of each mapping.
Anyway, the data IS there in the repository. How you intend to access it or how much you are willing to trust its persistence is up to you.

  • Disable Intel CPU Hyper threading in Oracle RAC environment

    Dear Expert,
Does disable CPU hyper threading will have direct impact or maybe unexpected behavior to Oracle RAC database?
Actually the background of this question is we have many received packet queuing on the network layer waiting to be processed. Investigation leads to the processor utilization which shows that many processor are still in idle state or not used when the other processors are busy processing incoming request.
I have visited some oracle note like
CPU Count Consideration for Oracle Parameter Setting When Using Hyper-Threading Technology (Doc ID 289870.1)
Oracle and Hyper-Threading (Doc ID 205089.1)
Using PROCESSOR_GROUP_NAME to bind a database instance to CPUs or NUMA nodes (Doc ID 1585184.1)
These document already give useful information but i wonder if there is any possibilities risk or another consideration of disabling cpu hyper threading.
Please let me know if any other information required.
    Thanks.
