Digital Life: the Central Hub, and a Laptop

Hi,
I don't possess an iPhone/iPod or iPad to test this in any way...
My understanding of the Apple Digital Life model is this:
You have your main machine, typically a desktop with lots of storage, containing all your music, movies and photos. The digital hub, or centralised storage.
This media is managed by iTunes / iPhoto.
Then you have your mobile devices: iPhone, iPod, iPad, and a laptop.
Please correct me if i'm wrong, but the idea / model is:
a) You sync your mobile devices to the digital hub, so any photos taken, movies, music purchased with the mobile devices, are all transferred to the centralised storage / digital hub, where they can in turn be backed up via time machine.
Am i right so far?
So, with the mobile devices, iPod, iPhone, iPad, the idea would be, if your leaving the home, and you want to grab some media off the digital hub, you hook it up, open up iTunes on the Digital Hub, select your device, and copy (or sync) Individual iTunes Playlists, and Photo Albums to the mobile device.
Is this correct?
Ok, last question.
So your going on holiday with your laptop, and you want to grab individual Playlists, and iPhoto albums, and put them onto the laptop. Is there any way to sync individual playlists / Photo Albums to the Laptop, as you would on an iPhone etc.
Ok, so the more tech minded of us would just connect over afp, or what ever, and grab folders/files through the Finder. But it seems to me, if i've got all the above correct, that the laptop, as a mobile device, is left out of the Digital Life loop. And isn't offered the convenience of being able to sync newly acquired media / purchased items to the digital hub, or grab compiled playlists / iPhoto Albums from the digital hub.
Any thoughts, comments, corrections most welcome.

Actually, I did understand what you wrote but it would appear you're using a different google from me .
i'd already mentioned tuneranger, and dismissed it because from what i can make out it syncs, giving you the ability to filter things out, not grab particular playlist.
And from what I made out it could. But I suggested that you contact the makers and you agree
won't harm to drop them an email to verify this.
As to this
iPhoto library Manager will only extract photos from a library, not albums.
You're incorrect. It will do exactly what you want. As I said above it will move individual files, albums, events plus all versions and associated metadata between Libraries. To make this clear:
Specifically, it will move
Photos
and/or
Albums
and/or
Events
plus all metadata and versions, between Libraries.
If the fact that I have done this very job myself with iPhoto Library Manager many times isn't enough for you then have a read of this

When I use the burn/dodge tool sometimes it drags and staggers and takes forever to complete whatever I'm burning/dodging. When I try to delete an image from the dock, it won't disappear but it won't display either.
Any help would be appreciated.

The Central Cache is the Bridge Cache.
It's referred as the Central Cache to differentiate it from the individual folder's cache or even the individual image cache.

My Iphone 3gS is not being recognized in Itunes on my laptop. It is charging so the USB port is working properly. My wifes Iphone IS being recognized by the same laptop. My Iphone IS being recognized by the desktop computer and another laptop

The key bit of information here is that one iPhone works on the computer in question and another does not. So it is unlikely that AMDS is not running or there is a driver problem; if either of these was the problem neither phone would be recognized in iTunes.
Unfortunately, I don't have an answer either. Except to verify that both iPhones (the one that works and the one that doesn't) use the same cable and the same USB port.
Also, are the two iPhones the same model and same iOS version?

Can the central system and the sender system at different time zone?

We have a control(i.e. central) system which is 6 hours ahead of the sender system.
When processing step "analyse tables in sender system", we get short dumps immediately at control , sender and receiver.

We never get this error before on this step. The only thing I can think of is that the sender and the central system
are at different time zone.

By looking at the runtime error , the reason of the dump should not be the timestamp diff .
You can create an OSS ticket with SAP for further analysis.
Also, there can be data consistency issues due to time diff .

While finalizing I get the blue screen and my laptop shuts down? HELP!

I pasted the diagnostic thing below but dont understand why I keep getting that blue screen and my computer to shut down on me. I have tried a couple of different brands of c.d.'s and can't figure it out. The computer is 2-3 months old I dont get it. Please help!

Routing issue between two satellites sites and one central hub

Hi,
I have 3 Ad sites with one exchange 2010 hub,cas,mailbox server on each sites.
One of this site (site A) is central Hub and the two other sites ( B and C) are two satellites of site A.
The is no connectivity between site B and C, only connectivity between A and B, and A and C.
When I send a mail from Site B to Site C, Exchange try to deliver the mail directly to site C and don't pass to site A to deliver to site C, some mail stay in queue in site B, and the the queue is in retry.
I flag the site A as HUB.
Site toplogy is correct and the cost too.
Can someone help me??

BT Infinity Home Hub and and BT DECNET digital cor...

I have just had BT infinity installed last week. All appears to be well on the broadband front but not so with the telephony side. The engineer installed the master socket in the study where both the phone line and data line are connected onto the outside wall and directly out to the external cable pair connected to the pole, so no complicated wiring.
I have a BT Diverse 6350 corded (Base Station) and cordless handset (DECT) telephone. The base station is situated in the same location as the Home Hub and the cordless phone is situated downstairs.
i) Before BT Infinity was installed incoming and outgoing calls to DECT phone OK
ii) After BT Infinity installed incoming calls received to DECT phone and answered OK but the originating end (caller) cannot hear speech . The called person can hear speech OK. Outgoing calls from the cordless handset appear to be working .
I suspect this may have something to do with the channel frequency of the Home Hub3 and the BT DECT phone but I cannot be seure. Any suggestions on how to resolve this issue would be most welcome.

First thing that came to mind.... but am sure isn't the problem however have you made sure the MUTE isn't on on the Dect phone?
Edit ...If mute was on all the time then the outgoing calls wouldn't work as well so it can't be that.
If you are wondering about the HH3 "something to do with the channel frequency of the Home Hub3"
You can TURN OFF the HH3 wireless signal and then try things.
Click on http://bthomehub.home/
Then settings and enter your password.
Then advanced settings.... continue to advanced settings.
Then Wireless tab.
Tick the NO for wireless Enable and at the bottom right of the page click apply.
If that cures it you can then reinstate the wireless and using channel selection move it from Automatic onto a selected channel.
INNSIDER is useful to identify a clear channel.

Usb laser printing, HD's with integral hubs, and open doors to network?

Bought a N capable base station and an airport express this week as I have multiple minis and a macbook and wish to put my itunes onto a central drive and use wireless printing.
Spent an “interesting” evening last night setting up, and I seem to have worked out how to use itunes via aliases etc.
But – when I try to print, the dialogue box comes up, the laser printer (Samsung 2550) starts up, but fails to print.
My set up is as follows – Iomega 320gb mini HD (powered) plugged into the USB on the base station and then the laser and my inkjet plugged into the USB sockets on the HD (its one of those which has an integral USB and FW hub built in).
Now, as it was very late in the evening, I didn’t do any more trouble shooting, but am intrigued as to why the printer would not print. The log says that the print job has been completed, but nothing comes out. I disconnected the printers from the hd hub and then disconnected the HD. I then plugged the printer directly into the base station, but it still doesn’t work.
Annoyingly enough, the printer worked fine the previous night when I was using it with the usb on the airport express alone (hadn’t bought the base station at this point).
The computer(s) “see” the laser printer without difficulty, so I see no reason why it should not print using the base station.
One thing which occurs to me is to plug a powered USB hub into the base station, and then separately plug the HD and the Laser into sockets on this hub, rather than using the integral hub of the HD. Again, I cant see why this should be necessary but I’ll give it a try.
Any thoughts re this?
One Last Thing…
The main reason for buying the kit is to cover a “weak spot” in the house for wifi. Hence the idea was to connect my modem/router via Ethernet to the base station, and then use the airport express as a WDS to effectively re-broadcast the signal and hopefully provide maximum signal strength throughout the house.
My question is – having used the airport utility to do this, am I right in presuming that the airport express then becomes effectively “invisible” and hence when I use my mini in the weak spot to log onto a network via airport, I should only see the SSID of my main base station (although in reality I will be accessing it via the airport express). I think this must be right because when I added the airport express the signal strength in the weak area of the house went to the max.
My base station uses WAP protection but I don’t appear to have any protection set up on the airport express (which I realise is a router in its own right). Do I need to add protection to the airport express to prevent access to my overall network? In otherwords, is an unprotected airport express acting as a WDS, effectively an open back door to the network? Would a neighbour etc be able to pick up my network SSID being broadcast by the airport express and log onto that without the WAP password?
Finally what is the difference between the airport express being a remote or a relay station. I would have thought that to act as a network extender, it should be set to relay, but the default appears to be remote. The Apple help sections don’t appear to distinguish between functionality, merely state the options.

You need to get this to work first. Otherwise forget it to work with a Hub. Turn the printer on FIRST. Then turn on the base station.

Direct connection and powered USB Hub are the only supported configurations by Apple. I've had no problem with attaching up to 7 separate devices on a $20 powered hub. Having a "integrated hub" like you describe may theoretically work, but it is not the same thing as a separate hub.

If you use WDS or "extend" the network, all base stations will still broadcast the SSID.

Yes, even if you turn SSID broadcast off, the SSID is broadcasted during the transactions and it will be easily detected using iStumbler. An yes you are letting a nice open back door for your neighbors.

Netweaver central hub VS Embedded system

What is the best approach.
Is it good to have a Netweaver gateway as central hub and access all the other systems from there.
I mean if i have a server with SAP AS 7.0 and use a central hub approach, Can i have all the features which i can get with the system having 7.4 AS ABAP SP11 and generating the Gateway there itself.
Will there be any limitations in the Central hub approach ?

Keep in mind that Gateway HUB has to be at equal or greater than the version at Gateway BEP Component. So when you set-up HUB system, ensure that you do not connect any backend system having latest components. You may achieve it by updating HUB system regularly.

Wired PC and Wireless Laptops

We just got a wireless router for the cable internet we have for a wired desktop. Our laptops are picking up the internet just fine. But how in the world do you set up a network with a wired desktop and the two laptops? We were told we could access files and printers from the desktop using the laptops but no one will expand on how to do that. Do you have to actually hardwire the laptops to the router or something in order to create a network between the wired desktop and wireless laptops? The guys at the computer store were standing there offering to charge us $200 to solve the problem. Can someone please help?

The desktop does have an ethernet port and is currently connected to the internet via that port. However, every time I try to connect the desktop to another computer by setting up a new connection, it doesn't give me the option of using the router as the hub to connect all my computers together. The microsoft website talks mainly about wiring all the comps directly to the computer but I'm trying to be able to access the desktop wirelessly from the laptop. the room the desktop is in is way way too hot to work in comfortably, so we were hoping to access it from an air conditioned room via the laptop. I'm just at a loss.

I would like to know how to inform it using the statements above? How to pass the parameters to make the job run in the central instance with high priority?

NMH405 Impressions after the first days - and a few beginners type questions

Hi All, After some research I took the plunge and acquired a new NMH405 (I really would have liked the non existing "NMH400" i.e. no drives). I removed the 500GB drive and added two new 1.5TB WD Green Caviar Drives and set it up as Raid-1 After a few error messages and waiting for a very long time while the drives resynched I manage to get it online as z-drive to my vista system.  I played around with the built-in backup tool (I like it!). I tried the builtin player after having placed some of my iTunes albums on the media hub and decided that I did not really like that option to much. I then simply moved my itunes libraries to the MediaHub and used the iTunes application on Vista as a front end. That works very nice.
I have a few questions, probably showing my limited knowledge of network attached drives.
Q1. Are there any other way to power off the device than pressing the little bottom on the NMH405 (aka my NMH415!)? When powered off I assume the only other way to power it on is via the bottom again?
Q2. I have noticed the device is offline for ages after having either recycled Windows Vista or the hub itself. Why is that? And what can I do to bring it online in a orderly fashion? There must be a way to get that ugly red crossed NAS showing as green and online as a z-drive in "My Computer" a lot faster.
Q3. I reformatted the 500GB drive that the box came with, added it to Disk enclosure box and attached the USB to the front of the NMH405, after a while it said on the front panel that it had detected the drive and asker whether I wanted to import the content.  I declined that (partly because it was empty!). Now how do I access this drive? I would like to (occasionally) use it to back up files from my Raid-1 setup (you newer know what could happen there...). How do I use this USB attached drive? Also i noticed it did not show up in "My Computer" - actually "Computer" in windows? Adding it directly to my windows system it is detected instantly?

Q1. Your correct, there's only one button at the front for powering on/off. There is though an option to reboot the device inside the web interface thru the configuration > system option.
Q2. It really depends on how fast your network can establish a connection, a mapped network drive is fine but I noticed that it slows down the bootup or login process when you turn on the PC. What I did was just create a shortcut on the desktop (location \\nmh410\media) which points to my mediahub and did not map the mediahub anymore to drive z.
Q3. If its a fresh 500gb drive with nothin on it yet, then you would need to create a partition on it first by connecting the external USB drive directly to the PC. Check out this article from Microsoft about partitioning. I think an external USB drive icon will not show up on the PC since the external USB drive is plugged in onto the mediahub USB port. To gain access to that external USB drive which is plugged in onto the mediahub USB port, I just create a shortcut to \\nmh410\media\device . For backup you can use the NTI backup software that came with your mediahub.
