Digital Radio

Just a comment away from the subject of computers and broadband for a moment. However it's a very familiar situation.
It's been slipped in just before Christmas, to soften the blow, perhaps. This is progress!
I read an article on the news today (almost hidden away on the page)  re analogue radio switch off, or digital radio switchover.
If it goes ahead it's going to be a difficult situation, perhaps not in the home where many are already prepared. The car is going to be a problem, even ignoring signal reception.
For some with newer models, e.g. Hybrids, there's a driver's console. If you didn't want satnav, then you could only have an FM receiver fitted. I didn't want satnav - it's  an experience equivalent to a having back seat driver in the car. There's a portable device I can use on the dashboard, but it's not always correct - and just that "not always" can create a lot of problems.
If we go fully digital, it's going to cost more than a few pennies to have a new console fitted, unless the manufacturer produces a new kit.
It will be much more convenient for him to sell you a new car.

To me, digital radio is a solution in search of a problem, and I wish the BBC would stop wasting so much money promoting it.
Just to add to my previous comments:- I seem to remember reading about all the changes to be made to DAB when I bought my portable radio.
There was a vague mention of the codec being changed from MP2 to MP3 at some time in the future.
Apparently, even existing DAB at MP2 has an inferior audio frequency range over FM.
The DAB radio has to be future-proof when bought. I'm not sure if even my Roberts is!
This may well put the dampers on the scene as it exists. Or perhaps those attempting to force that changeover to digital are simply looking for more space in the broadcast spectrum??

  • Digital Radio for iPhone

I regularly go to sporting events and would like to pick up the radio commentary over my iPhone. Is there a digital radio app that covers this? (Ideally 5 live).

    Hi
I use TuneIn Radio - it streams just about every radio station in the world, including 5 Live, although you do need a Wi-Fi or 3G connection.
    http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/tunein-radio/id319295332?mt=8
Be warned, you may go over your monthly data allowance streaming on 3G.

  • Macbook connection to Pure Sensa Digital Radio

I have been given a Pure Sensa digital Wifi radio for Christmas and I want to use it with my macbook. I want to be able to listen to spotify and my Music library on my macbook through it. This is all apparently possible by setting up everything through Pure flow Server. On the Pure flow server I have set up my location for the music files and from this I can see all my albums on my Pure Radio as it is talking through WIFI. However I cannot play any of the tunes through my radio, there is an error code.
I would also like to be able to listen to Spotify through the radio, but I cannot work out how to do this either !
Any advice would be gratefully received.THANKSS

Is the Western Digital advice correct?
No. The information is wholly wrong, and partially irrelevant. The wrong and relevant part is that the backup volume is exported via AFP. Otherwise you'd never see it in Time Machine at all. The rest is both wrong and irrelevant.
    Is it the device?
Search this site for reports of fiascos involving Time Machine and third-party NAS devices, that one in particular.
If you want to back up with TM over a network, use a device supported by Apple. That would be either a Time Capsule (not an AirPort base station with a USB drive attached) or another Mac.
Network backup, even with Apple equipment, is slower and less reliable than backup to a locally attached storage device.

  • Sangean digital radio with wireless network music player

Hi.  I have just purchased a Sangean digital internet radio with wireless network player.
Can I link this to itunes on my 2010 Mac?
Is there any way I can easily convert my Itunes library to windows media player to support this functionality?

A couple of things that come to mind to check... Does the SBWM device connect to your wireless network when you turn it on? SBWM device on power up / init finishes with 2 solid green indicators. If it ends with 2 solid green then you can check the network assigned IP from the remote / system settings, make sure you're on the same subnet as your PC. If SBWM lights end up with solid blinking green the SBWM did not connect to the wireless network. If this is the case make sure your DSL modem has the radio turned on. Make sure the DSL modem has the 802.b protocol turned on. Do you use network security. The highest level security the SBWM will support is WEP 28, if your new DSL modem is set for WPA or higher the SBWM will not be able to connect to the network. If you were using WEP security on your old cable modem the key in the new DSL modem will need to be identical to what you had on your cable modem, or you'll have to do the SBWM network setup via USB to load the new WEP key to the SBWM device. Hope these suggestions are of use. W3

  • Macbook Pro recording sound from external radio

    Hi all,
Wondering if anyone can give me some advice on how I can record an external digital radio with my Macbook Pro. As a backgrounder, I am able to do it on my old white Macbook because it has a line-in port, so I just connect a 3.5mm cable from the radio to the Macbook and then I have software (Audio Hijack Pro) to hijack and record it.
However, as we all know, the new Macbook Pros have done away with the line-in port. And the Sound options in System Preferences don't seem to have a function allowing me to fiddle with the headphone port (apparently, earlier models had a function in System Preference that allowed you to turn the headphone port into line-in) but this new model doesn't have that option anywhere.
So I'm wondering if anyone can tell me whether the USB ports or even Thunderbolt can RECEIVE sound from an external device such as a digital radio. I have seen cables that are 3.5mm to USB so I think getting the cable to connect the radio to the Mac is possible, but will it actually receive the sound or just do nothing? Or is there some other way I can record an external device I'm not thinking of, bearing in mind I don't want to use the Mac's microphone to do it, as I will of course get all other ambient sound in the room at the time, and I don't want to rely on an internet stream of said radio.
    Thanks,
    Joe

What if it was a digital radio, would that make things easier by way of using just a 3.5mm to USB cable? Especially because a quick search of a USB Audio Interface brought up some expensive results.
Also, as a possible alternative, after some extensive research online, I've found an iMic USB Audio Device by Griffin that is essentially an adaptor with a USB cable on one end and a Line In port on the other, thus allowing me to connect a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable from the digital radio to the adapter, and then the adapter goes into the MBP USB port. It's on Amazon and it claims to function as a way to plug microphones and other external audio equipment to it. It seems pretty straightforward, which sometimes has me thinking it's too good to be true.
The output from your radio is analog, regardless of whether the radio is 'digital' or not.
You need a USB audio interface. The iMic is a USB audio interface.

if the dab in question have a 3.5mm minijack like the iphone then yeah that cable would work
but you can find one much much much cheaper then that price would would work just as good
also make sure the dab's connector is input and not output

  • Radio through itunes on ipod touch?

I know you can play streaming radio through iTunes on a computer, so is there a way to do that through iTunes or Music apps on the ipod touch? I know you can get third party apps like AOL Radio, but the problem is those won't play in the background while you use another app. The Music app as far as I know is the only thing that will run in the background, so is there a way to get streaming radio through there?

  • Radio on iPod

I used to have an awful old mobile but I could listen to the radio anytime on it. I'm disappointed that my otherwise clever iPhone can't do this simple thing..why not? or am I missing something?

or purchase one of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Roberts-Digital-Radio-Remote-Control/dp/B000X24UOM
(though if you have an iphone rather than an ipod touch it isn't as necessary - you will have internet access on the go - us ipod touch users don't have the technology to allow us to listen to radio apps on the go as they require internet access)

  • HT203175 The Issue: Radio keeps rebuffering and/or freezes and then crashes.

    Wide appeal
The Issue: When listening to any radio station, it sounds rather like a music CD that keeps jumping then goes to rebuffering and eventually crashes. I have creating a new user account on my PC, used system-wide troubleshooting (checked for viruses, used misconfig to troubleshoot conflicts, verified 3rd party software issues) and nothing has provided a resolution. When I go directly on-line, there is no problem. I conclude that therefore the conflict lies within the new versions of iTunes (10.6.3) and digital radio. Is there anyone who can help or confirm my conclusion? Asssitance gratefully appreciated. Thanks

  • Help Using Am/fm radio

Tried to listen to a digital personal radio using the audio input, replacing the ear plugs cable with an audio out/in cable
Of course it didn't work because the antenna for the radio is inside the ear plugs cable
What are my options for easily listening to AM/FM radio through the iPod Hi-Fi ?

You really want to connect the radio using a line output, in preference to the headphone output. Are you actually talking about a digital DAB radio? They must be pretty scarce (and not cheap) in Australia, and I didn't think many stations were broadcasting in digital. However then you mention regular AM/FM radio.
The only digital radios I could easily find on sale in Australia (at Jaycar) each had a pair of RCA line outputs. You can find 2x RCA to 3.5mm stereo cables at many places selling audio stuff, and that will plug straight into your iPod HiFi.

  • Radio Receiver from Apple Used on Video iPod-Results

    Hello all:
I recently purchased an iPod Radio Receiver from Apple. This is a cord with receiver clip and remote that can turn your iPod Video into an FM radio.
It replaced an old Sony Sport armband walkman.
I am so amazed by the improved performance, I had to post and let folks know that the quality of the reception is so much better over the Sony.  I live in San Francisco and take (ug!) public transportation to and from work.  I have significantly less static and interference with the new adapter and at times it seems like digital radio.
Black would be nice to match my iPod, but the improved performance is worth every penny and outweighs any negatives.  If you are on the fence about it, or have been curious about the quality, don't wait another minute.

This feature is not available on the 60GB 5th gen iPod.
You need a 'Late 2006' model 5th Gen iPod for the search feature.
All 60GB 5th Gen iPods are not Late 2006 models.
