Disappearing Character

A single character U+06DD is no longer appearing in my Adobe InDesign  exported PDF's. It views properly in InDesign CS5 ME and prints  properly, but when it is in text exported as a PDF for Print, it  disappears. I recently switched from InDesign CS4 ME to InDesign CS5 ME  and that could possibly be the cause, but the real question is, how do I  get it back? What could be making it disappear?

This is the first time I've turned to forums for an answer and I am quite pleased and surprised at the quick helpful responses (I posted to multiple forums, not knowing who best to ask for help.) I am told by the Tasmeem plug-in people that my problem is a bug they are working on. It does seem that your article might be related to the issue as well. So I guess my solution is to work from the harddrive I cloned just before upgrading until the folks upstairs fix things.
Thanks!

  • Help!! Disappearing Character Styles

I have a strange problem. I have created a Character Style in Pages '09, which I can use when I am in a document, but that style disappears as soon as I close the document. Likewise, even if I keep the original document open, the style is still not visible if I create a new document.
Does anyone have any thoughts about what I can do?
    Thanks very much.

    It's perfectly normal.
    A style is a document's property, not a program's one.
In pages 130/131 of the Pages User Guide (English version) we may read:
    *+Importing Styles from Another Document+*
+When you import a document from Microsoft Word, any styles it contains are imported into the Pages document and can then be used the same way you use any other styles created within Pages.+
+You can import styles that have already been defined in another Pages document without importing the document’s content.+
    +To import styles from a Pages document:+
    +1 Choose Format > Import Styles.+
+2 Select the document that contains the styles you want to import, and then click Open.+
+3 Select the styles you want to import in the dialog. Hold down the Command key as you click the style names to select multiple styles, or click Select All.+
+4 To replace styles in your document that have the same name as the styles you are importing, select “Replace duplicates.”+
+Note that replacing a style will affect any text that uses this style. Replacing a style also changes the style of text in locked objects, but the text retains its original appearance.+
+If an imported style has the same name as a style in the open document and you do+
+not select “Replace duplicates,” a number is appended to the name of the imported style. For example, if you import a style called Body to a document that already contains a Body style, the imported style will be named Body 2.+
    +5 Click OK.+
+You can make imported paragraph styles available by clicking the Paragraph Style pop-up menu in the format bar and in the Styles drawer of your document. Imported character and list styles will be available in the Styles drawer.+
+To maintain a consistent look among several documents, keep a master document that contains all the styles you need. When you need to change a style, change it in the master document and import the master document’s styles into the other documents.+

  • Dissapearing letters in forms fields

After creating a multi-record block displaying 12 records I added a text item that only displays one item per record. If an item (the text item in my case) has a different number of records displayed as defined within the block properties (block = 12, text-item = 1) then the first character entered into the text field must be entered twice before it is displayed. You can see the character being written and then being immediately removed! My version of forms (Forms [32 Bit] Version 6.0.8.16.1 (Production))
    Thanks in advance!

It is some sort of bug.
I encountered that problem in forms recently, too. I had a multi-record block with some items' "Number of Items Displayed" property set to 1. And by the way, I had also set the background color of the canvas. On the singly-occurring fields, the first character entered was erased.
Metalink said they would report it as a bug, and then found a workaround: Instead of directly setting the canvas background color, assign the canvas to a visual attribute, and change the background of the visual attribute. Doing this got rid of the disappearing character.
    Go figure...

  • First character typed in a field disappears

After having navigated into a field (alpha, date or number) either by a mouse click or by tabbing, the first character typed into the field disappears. No trigger is fired (checked with Tools->Preferences->Runtime tab->Debug messages chacked).
If there is already some data in the field, I can reposition the caret, but the first character typed forces the caret to go to the beginning of the field and the character typed disappears.
Behaves similarly in forms 6 and forms 9.
    Any ideas about the reason?

    Hi,
I get this a lot too. It is, as you say when it has been left for a short while and you go to type and it misses the first letter. There was an update for a keyboard issue recently from Apple but it did not seem to cure this problem for me. It is completely intermittent though. Sometimes it's ok, like now, and others it is bad. Cheers.

  • Why my Character Pallet in Utilities always blink and disappear?

Why my Character Pallet in Utilities always blink and disappear? I cannot add special characters. It's very annoying. Could anyone help? Thanks in advance.

Try turning on all desired toolbars under View/Toolbars. I noticed in FM12 that the palettes are displayed depending on the function you're using (e.g., Manage Graphics, Authoring, etc.) - top right of the screen. I have all my editing toolbars turned on, then leave the mode to Manage Graphics. Everything stays and I don't have to continually re-open. Hope that helps.

  • My character styles have disappeared

About a week and a half ago, my character styles completely disappeared. They're fine in InDesign, but in InCopy they're just *gone.*

Our IT people are stumped. They reinstalled the software to no effect. Does anyone know what could have possibly caused this? Nobody else on the network is having the same problem.
Thanks in advance for any insight you all might be able to give. Please let me know what other information you need to diagnose this.
    Much obliged,

    Looks like corrupt preferences.
This is for InDesign but the process for resetting them in InCopy is the same...and no, reinstalling won't do a thing.

  • Character Viewer disappears after it starts loading

Whenever I select Character Viewer or have to input special characters, the Character Viewer starts to load but then disappears. Hiding the viewer still works, but I can't get the viewer stay open. When I switch windows, it flashes again but disappears. What is going on?

Try trashing the .plist in Home/Library/Preferences which has CharPalette in its name.  Plus possibly the one with systemuiserver in its name.

  • Tab character disappearing in value when its the only character

    Hi,
We have a data tier app that consumes some XML generated by another SQL Server instance. The information is passed via XML files. We noticed when loading the XML file back into an XML variable within SQL Server, any values which contain just a tab are lost.
This can be demonstrated by running this example code:
    DECLARE @test1 NVARCHAR(max) = '<Delimiter> </Delimiter>', -- only a tab as the value
    @test2 NVARCHAR(max) = '<Delimiter>. </Delimiter>' -- a tab with another character, in this case a .
    SELECT
    CAST(@test1 AS XML) AS [Example 1], -- doesn't work
CAST(@test2 AS XML) AS [Example 2], -- works
    CAST(REPLACE(@test1,' ','&#009;') AS XML) AS [Example 3] -- works
    The results are:
    <Delimiter />
    <Delimiter>. </Delimiter>
    <Delimiter> </Delimiter>
Notice the first example disregarded the tab content, while the later 2 retained the tab.
Is there an option within SQL server that would enable us to retain special character values (one of which is the tab) without performing any special handling before casting to XML?
    Thanks,
    Jay :)
If you shake a kettle, does it boil faster?

    Hi Elvis,
It worked. We got the source service to add xml:space="preserve", and if it came in missing, we added it before converting to XML. Any outgoing XML we used the query:
    SET @xml.modify('insert attribute xml:space {"preserve"} into (/Test[1])')
To add the correct handling in. These links were also helpful in describing the handling:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms190965.aspx (White Space Handling in Typed XML)
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms187928(v=sql.100).aspx
Thanks for pointing in the right direction.
    Cheers,
    Jay :)

  • Character "/" disappears in firefox

work in a company that has a web system on Nov. aversion Firefox so anymore slash "/", this bar disappears from the field. If we type bar with Alt Gr + Q, this bar does not add up. In Chrome for example, the bar does not add in any way. (google translate)

I'm not sure if I understand what is happening.
Do you have a problem with entering characters via the keyboard?
Windows remembers the keyboard layout setting per application and you may have changed the keyboard layout by accident via a keyboard shortcut.<br />

  • Why do character styles disappear after an upgrade to RH9? And more...

I am trying out version 3 of the technical communication suite and have developed a few concerns about RoboHelp 9. I'm wondering if anyone has feedback on the following:
After opening a version 7 project in RoboHelp 9, I noticed that all of my custom character styles are gone. They are not listed in the "style" pane (when the drop-down is set to either "Character Styles" or "Paragraph and Character Styles"), and the text itself does not look correct. Has anyone experienced anything like this? I checked the RH9 release notes, and the three known issues listed have nothing to do with character styles.
On a broader note, I read elsewhere in this forum that upgrading from RH version 7 to either 8 or 9 can be painful. Does anyone know whether Adobe (or anyone else) has a list of upgrade warnings, or a list of proposed solutions for making the upgrade process go more smoothly? I'm not seeing anything in the official Adobe documentation, though I could be missing it.
Also, if anyone has an opinion on whether the  FrameMaker-RoboHelp integration is better in version 3 of technical communications suite (compared with  version 1, which is I am), I would be interested in hearing your reactions. After a first pass, the only part of the version 3 suite I'm really impressed with is the new Acrobat.
    thanks,
    Abby

If you would like to create a new project and set up a topic with your CSS in it, I will take a look at it. How to send it is described on the Contact page on my site.
The most common issue with upgrading to 8 was lists. You can read about that on my site. Look under RoboHelp > Lists.
With 8 the big issue was a bug that will not affect you in 9. The project lost track of files.
I cannot help you on the FM integration and suggest you post a separate question on that aspect at http://forums.adobe.com/community/robohelp/robohelp_framemaker

  • Problem: '\' character of file location disappears

    Hi
I am trying to pass the location of a file on local disk as parameter to a java function... the function accepts 'String' type... but when I do this... the '\' characters in the location disappear.
For Example: If C:\Documents and Settings\Hllo\Desktop\trials is passed then it appears as C:Documents and SettingsHlloDesktop       rialsI dont understand what is happening... any pointers....?
How do I overcome this? Please help..

    Ok,
This is what I am trying to do:
    1. From a web page a user selects a file
    2. On a button click, JavaScript function gets invoked and the file location is stored in a local variable and passed as parameter.
    3. I am using DWR (AJAX), where the server side code 'FileOpener' will accept this string as parameter and tries to open the file.
So therefore I need something in this server side code to escape the backslash characters from the received argument.... How do I do it?
At present this is what I am doing and it shows me error:
    BufferedReader read = new BufferedReader(new FileReader(fileLocation));
    while((line = read.readLine()) != null) {
                       str = str + " " + line ;
    read.close();

  • Fonts disappeared from Character panel

I think this might have something to do with the fact that I selected "reset character" in the character panel menu. I just upgraded to CS6 from CS5. In CS5, I used to "reset character" when I just installed a new font and wanted to refresh the menu to include that new font without restarting the program. But this time, it seemed to wipe clean my font menu and only 10 fonts remain. How to fix this?
    Thanks,
    Sarah

J, in FontBook, I selected fonts and clicked the disable button. But you're right, it didn't seem to do anything (?). I just cleared my font cache and now I've got A-Z fonts showing up in Photoshop, but only a fraction of the total number of enabled fonts. InDesign and Illustrator continue to display ALL my fonts.

Neil, I have only FontBook. I've never used font management on this machine and have never had any trouble up until now.
When I look in FontBook, it says 514 fonts. I've got about 295 enabled.
I'm on a Dual 2GHz G5, running Mac OS 10.3.9, with 1GB RAM, using Adobe CS.
Photoshop has a font limit? What is that limit and why is it now suddenly an issue?
Ramon, I looked in FAQs and old posts and didn't find this issue ... can you direct me to another place that has my issue solved?
This is a computer at work and I can't just go out and buy some software to put on this machine. It would take forever to get it approved and I really just need it to work now unfortunately. The font I need access to, Univers, is a font we've been using consistently for a couple years now.
Nini, the weird thing is that I've found that I can use the font in Illustrator and copy and paste the live font into a Photoshop file and edit and everything. That's my workaround for now until I get this figured out.
    Thanks all...

  • Imported text formatting disappearing when changing font in character palette.

Something seems to have changed with my InDesign, and I'm not sure why. Here is what I used to be able to do.
I could import a word doc into a text box. This text would have bold, regular, italics fonts. I would select the text box, then change the font using the character palette by just changing the top font box. For example, if the font imported in as Helvetica but I wanted it all to be Futura, I would select the box and then just type Futura and all of the Helvetica bolds would become Futura Bold, and the Helvetica Italic would become Futura Italic, etc. I didn't have to select each line.
Now if I try to do that same thing, when I select Futura, it just changes ALL the text to Futura Regular. I lose all previous formatting that was imported in from the word doc.
    I hope this makes sense.
How can I go back to the way it was?
PLEASE HELP! This is maddening! Not a big deal for a single flyer design but when laying out a book, this could add DAYS to the project.
    thanks!

I believe the issue lies in the font palette. Here is what I used to do.
    - New document.
    - Create text box.
    - Select text box.
    - CMD + D
    - Select word doc
    - Text is imported with bolds, italics, etc.
At this point, let's say I want font to be Myriad Pro...but I want the bold to remain bold and italic to remain italic.
    - Select text box.
    - Type font name into font palette (No dropdown or popup menu used to appear, now it does). Used to just type Myriad Pro then hit return.
    - Font in text would retain bolds and italics and become Myriad Pro. So if a line in the text imported as Helvetica Bold, it would now be Myriad Pro Bold.
Now when I do this, it just changed ALL of the text to ONE font. If I type in Myriad Pro, a drop-down menu appears and automatically selects Myriad Pro Condensed.
I hope that helps. I know I'm not crazy. This is what I have done forever. I use InDesign every day...and have for years. I rebooted my mac two days ago and this problem appeared. It seemed like some sort of awful update. haha. When I rebooted, I lost all of my preferences. InDesign went back to points and picas instead of inches. Smart guides appeared, I had to turn those off again. Stuff like that.
    Any thoughts?
