So I inserted a movie disc and it wont come out Im using my mac mini now
Nothing good would happen. Can you boot to the Recovery HD?
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
If you can do this, then you might try the following:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Updating OSX, screen black, fan running, disc wont eject
Old MacBook pro - late model 2006 (Caore 2 Duo, 3 GB RAM).
Just put in a new HD after old one died.
doing a clean load of software as the old HD was dying during my last backup and backup failed (wonderful...)
Has been running on Leopard, but wanted to upgrade to Lion, so just used Snow Leopard disc to upgrade to that first. Got to around 20% done and screen went back. Fan is running (loud), hard to tell if disc spinning. Left for hours and nothing. Powered off, pulled battery etc, nothing. Power up, still black screen and loud fan. Disc wont eject!!
Ideas on my next move?Clean Install of Snow Leopard
1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc. Insert the disc into the
optical drive and restart the computer. After the chime press and hold down the
"C" key. Release the key when you see a small spinning gear appear below the
dark gray Apple logo.
2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.) Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, set the format type to Mac
OS Extended (Journaled, if supported), then click on the Partition button.
3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X. You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
left mouse button until the disc ejects.
2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
4. Press COMMAND-E.
5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in
your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
/usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.
Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax. It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
Lion System Requirements
1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
or Xeon processor
2. 2GB of memory
3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
4. 7GB of available space
5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply. -
my mom threw away my box with my install discs my retail snow leopard disc doesn't support mac mini 2010 ethernet. can apple help me ? less than 1 month old.
You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.

Can not boot from Mac OS X Install Disc 1, G5, Snow Leopard
I have version 10.6.8 installed. Compter is a 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon. 6GB memory
I want to run Disk Utility and startup from the install CD that came with the computer (the grey one, disc 1, or even the retail disc Mac OS X Snow leopard, the whit one) but I CAN NOT DO IT. So frustrating.
I restart, hold down the "C" key, before the chime, after the chime, every which way, and my Mac always acts as if I am simply restarting, goes right to the login screen everytime. I tried holding down OPTION on restart to choose which to startup from, but only saw the hard drive as an option. I open System Preferences, Startup Disk and the install CD does not even show up as a choice to start from, yet the install CD shows up in the finder.
What am I doing wrong?
ThanksOK.
According to the knowledge base that model should have shipped with Tiger, 10.4.7.
Going to need some thought here, though. I was going to suggest a possible problem with the optical drive, but you say the DVD mounts on the desktop as a normal DVD would?
Nevertheless, do you have access to another Mac or an external HD with a bootable OS X on it (later than the Tiger version your Mac Pro shipped with)?
If so, try booting from the external, or from the other Mac using Firewire Target Disk mode, and using DU from one of those sources to repair the MP's internal HD, then try the disc(s) again. -
I just received Snow Leopard in the mail and my 2008 Macbook will not read the disk and ejects it. Anything I can do to fix this?
.. before you send it back, you might want to check/test that the drive is ok first.

Disc wont eject - still booting though
hi
i have a disc that wont eject. its a region 1 dvd and my player is region 2, i don;t want to change the region as its the last time i can do this so i clicked cancel and tried to eject. it makes the eject noise, then the sucking back in noise. then dvd player starts up again and it asks me to change region, i click cancel and the loop starts over.
i have tried:
eject with disc utility - same eject and suck noise
hold mouse on start up - same eject and suck noise
eject when tilted upside down and 45 deg down - same
the computer is not trying to boot from the dvd, so it starts up fine, so just leaving it doesn't eject like i have read on support forums. as it is starting up fine i have not tried the bit of card inside to stop it spinning trick.
so, any suggestions?
thanksCreate a burn folder, put some data in it and press 'burn'. The disc will eject. Then, just cancel the burn.

You aren't using an Nvidia mobo, Apple is responsible for base driver to enable hardware. You then need to update graphics (and audio, plus might be one or two others).

No install discs, upgrading to Snow Leopard, selling MacBook question
I have searched these boards and have found "partial" answers to my situation. Asking for your patience in advance:
I'm selling my 2008 MacBook to a good friend's college bound daughter. I lost my install disks, and called Apple Tech who advised based on the cost difference I just upgrade to Snow Leopard (vs. pay for replacement install disks). I was told I could "re-set" the laptop back to factory settings so my friend's daughter has the "out of the box" experience when receiving it.
Maybe I've read TOO many of the good tips on these boards, but feel a little confused:
Is my understanding correct that by installing the Snow Leopard upgrade , employing Disk Utility to 'erase' the HD, then aborting the installation process before registering this will result in the out of box experience?
thanks much!Prepare Your Mac for Sale
Boot from the Snow Leopard Installer Disc One. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select the startup volume from the left side list then click on the Erase tab. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) then click on the Options button. Select the one pass Zero Data option and click on the OK button. Then click on the Erase button.
Note: You can skip the Zero Data option if you are not concerned about removing sensitive personal data from the hard drive. If you choose to skip this part of the process then it is possible for others to recover data from the hard drive. The Zero Data procedure will prevent others from getting access to your personal information.
This process will take 30 minutes to several hours depending upon the size of the hard drive. After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Now complete the OS X installation. At the completion of the installation do not restart the computer. Instead just shut it off. The next user will be presented with the Setup Assistant when they turn on the computer just as it would if new out of the box. -
a couple of days ago i tried to burn a cd from a playlist. i put in what i thought was a blank cd but apparently it was not. i tried to eject it but it wont. i tried every possible way that the book suggest to do but no success. all i get is the colored spinning wheel then i am unable to do anything but shut it down from the back power button and try again with no luck. any suggestions?

Repair Disk: Use original Leopard disc or my Snow Leopard upgrade disc?
Not sure which to use before I try it. I'm currently down to about 4 gigs on my ~ 325GB system drive. I also have a 3-disk 1.5 TB raid with about 400GB free. Note: I can delete stuff from both - I will free up space on the system drive but I ran the Verify test just to see what was up and this is what I found. Wasn't really having a lot of big problems, though performance does seem a little slow. Thanks for any help.

Macbook Pro rejects all discs after installing Snow Leopard
Topic title pretty much sums it up. After Upgrading my late 2009 15" 10.5.8 Macbook Pro to 10.6.4 the disc drive decided to stop working. I've tried three different discs, no success. When i put a disc in, it speeds up but after a few seconds it just spits it out again. Discs never appear in Finder.
Any ideas? Help would be appreciated, thanks.
-KHI,
If you haven't repaired permissions after the upgrade, that may help.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

Macbook to Snow Leopard with Macbook Pro Discs
My dad has a MacBook Pro 13 in. with Snow Leopard on it and I have a regular MacBook from 2006 with Leopard on it. Can I use his re-install discs to install Snow Leopard on my computer? If so, what do I need to do before? Full backup?
No. Disks that came with your father's computer (gray disks) only work on that specific model. You need to [buy Snow Leopard|http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA&mco=MTc1MTE zNjY]. If you want to update the iPhoto and the other iLife applications, then you may want to consider the [box set|http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC680Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA&mco=MTk0MjIyNzc ].

hey,
i just got my macbook today, black bto 1gb ram, 120gb hdd. the first disc i put in was microsoft office to install. the problem is the disc wont eject. ive tried using the eject button on the keyboard, dragging the disc to the trash bin, rebooting holding down the mouse button the whole time. every time the disc attempts to eject but doesnt and revs up again, loading the disc so it shows up mounted on the desktop again. any help greatly appreciated, applecare is closed right now and my apple store genius bars are full for the night.
daveThis same situation happened to me with my new MacBook. I got a Family Guy DVD stuck in the drive. The first time it happened I figured it was a fluke. I banged it around a little bit and it came out. I thought everything would be fine. Man, was I wrong. The second time the DVD remained stuck. It would not come out. The computer would try to eject it with no success.
So, since I am a U.S. Marine stationed in West Africa, getting my MacBook back to Apple for repair wasn't so easy. The first thing I did was DHL my MacBook to a friend in the states so he could take it to an Apple Store for repair. It seemed pretty straight forward. The only issue was I would have had to wait for a long time to use my new MacBook again. I was willing to make the sacrifice.
Well DHL thought it would be a good idea to smash my lap top into bits before delivering it. So instead of just a stuck DVD I had a smashed laptop to deal with. I was a little furious. So, I had to make a claim with DHL which they told me could take up to 90 days. So I just went ahead and bought a new MacBook and I'm still waiting for my claim from DHL to go through.
I hope my new MacBook doesn’t have the same problem. If it does I’m just going to get a PC and I HATE PC’s. But they are cheaper.
Bottom line: There seems to be a problem with many of the DVD drives on the MacBooks. I just might use an external one.
